Scribus

Quick and Fast: A layout program to rival Adobe InDesign, Quark and Microsoft Publisher. Can only work with EPS, SVG and PDF files. Cannot integrate with any of the pro layout programs very well.

Where to get it: Website: http://www.scribus.net/
Download: http://www.scribus.net/?q=taxonomy/term/36 Windows, Mac and various Linux systems. You’ll need Ghostscript to use EPS files. See below.

As mentioned above, Scribus is a good, simple layout program, as long as you know layout programs. You may only work with EPS, PDF and SVG files(including SVG files from Inkscape). It does not integrate well with other layout programs, since the developers do not want to go through the hassle of getting licenses and agreements with Adobe, Quark or Microsoft. Still, PDF, SVG and EPS are useful.

Scribus can be put together with GIMP and Inkscape to make you’re own little Adobe-like design bundle, with GIMP as Photoshop, Inkscape as Illustrator and Scribus as InDesign.

Ghostscript: In order to use EPS files well (or at all) in Scribus, you’ll have to have one of the latest versions of Ghostscript. Never heard of it? Neither had I. Go Here to download Ghostscript and get more info. (You’ll need Version 8.60 or above. I got 8.63 from the link I gave you above and haven’t had problems…yet.)

License and Use: The Scribus website says that the program is under GPL License. Whether this is GNU GPL or not, I’m not sure, but on This Page, it says you can use Scribus for commercial purposes.
