Summary and Other Video Freeware

In summary, I’d say Wax is the best/easiest for compositing, while Jahshaka is the best for editing. WHY JAHSHAKA all of the sudden? Well, I’ve been forced to use the program to edit my latest short film, since Avid Free DV is acting up, and - it’s actually pretty good! Movie Maker is pretty annoying sometimes, but even it can do some nice stuff (try right mouse clicking on each clip). Avid Free DV is more for learning Avid or doing big, slow projects. It will take a bit to get the program going and figuring out how to use it.

But, there are more video freeware out there that I haven’t really used yet.

Jumpcut - This is an online editor. You upload your footage to the website, edit and render to show people from the site. Go to http://www.jumpcut.com/

Video Thang  - This is an EXTREMELY basic program aimed at teenagers, which uses a storyboard approach to editing. Go to http://www.videothang.com/?gclid=CPqtgOD6qpcCFRLoxgodXSz1jQ

Vivia - This is a Windows/Linux program that seems highly professional. Alas, it is only for PAL footage, so all of us Americans who use NTSC cameras won’t be able to use this for video. Figures. You can still use photos such as JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG, etc., I think. Go to http://vivia-video.org/

Virtual Edit - This is a great looking program for Windows that seems really easy to use. The catch? You can’t use it for commercial purposes. For you non-profit video editors, go to  http://www.virtualedit.net/home.htm

Bobyte Software’s AviTricks - This looks like a potentially good video editing program. http://www.bobyte.com/AviTricks/
