NIN Releases Surprise Album

Mar 6th, 2008 by mmontgomery | 0

NIN_ghosts

Sorry, I’ve been away from posting on the Afterword Blog, but there’s been little time for an afterword. Until recently, my schedule has been tight and finally I’ve got a few cracks in the regularly scheduled program to talk nonsense. So here we go!

My bff got me a birthday present much to my surprise. I don’t normally do gift exchanges. Well, I did get him a YouTube video that stole away 3-minutes of his life that he wish he had back. Sorry. Those of you who read my blog know what that’s like. Anyhow, he got me NIN’s newest album. It hasn’t shipped yet, but there’s a complimentary download that’s currently rockin’ my iPod while I proof our latest and greatest issue of Videomaker Magazine. I’m going through the 36-track instrumental album for the second time now and it’s insanely good. Can’t wait for the album to show up!

Oh, and speaking surprises and such, this album was a surprise to everyone. Nobody knew Trent Reznor would be delivering an album anytime soon. The result was a massive (3-4 times than expected from an unknown release) flow of web traffic to NIN’s servers. They were planning for a huge hit, but nothing like this. There’s something to be said for pleasantly surprising you fan base. It’s important to keep an eye on the music industry and an especially close eye on the independents who have moved away from labels and traditional marketing strategies. Both NIN and Radiohead have released albums where the customer sets the price for their product. It’s an interesting tactic. One that generates the kind of buzz you want on the interwebs. And, now the surprise release can be added to the toolkit. It will be interesting to see if anyone follows.

As a good friend, I’m up’ing my gift to return the generosity. Here you go Joseph– a incoming link to your mighty blog. Happy Birthday. Enjoy all two of the people still reading this post.

Kodak Improves CMOS Sensors

Feb 5th, 2008 by mmontgomery | 0

Kodak CMOS Sensor

A bit of good Tech news arrives from Kodak a few days after the logical time to release this news (um… PMA?), but what’s the difference. Kodak’s engineers have designed a CMOS sensor with reverse polarity on the silicon wafer, which basically improves the sensors signal-to-noise ratio on several levels. This means improved low-light performance and improved vertical smearing. As of right now this new technology seems to be focus on mobile phones and other small devices. No word whether or not this new type of CMOS sensor will find it’s way to the video world.

You can read the full press release on the Imaging Resource website here.

Online TV Watching on the Rise

Feb 4th, 2008 by mmontgomery | 0

NewTeeVee

There’s no real big surprises here with the latest trends moving towards Internet versus traditional TV sets. What seems to be most exciting is that the research shows that 21% of all visitors going to a network’s website were to watch a specific show. That means 1 out of every 5 visitors enjoys their shows via the web– that’s a good deal of eyeballs on the computer screen watching TV content. Read more on NewTeeVee blog here.

Everybody thinks they know CES

Jan 17th, 2008 by mmontgomery | 0

Here’s a pic of me at CES 2008.

Mark does CES

Not bad, eh? More on me later.

This year’s CES was distorted by Gizmodo’s Punk’d prank that I refuse to link to. They’ve got enough web traffic for their efforts as it is. I’m not going on a rant about journalism practices or viral video or yada-yada-yada. Instead, I’d like to remind people that we’ve all been there before, but perhaps Gizmodo has struck a new chord– the rise of adolescent technology. Let’s face it. Someone has got to play the role. And, they’re not the only ones screaming for attention, needing affirmation from the peers, and in the process trying to find their self-identity. Case in point, Sony’s Rolly. What the heck was that?!

Hey, look at me. I roll around and play music. I’m crazy. I’m different. I’m cool. Right?

Everybody is looking to find their place on the show room floor. That’s CES. Big stakes. Big risks. Nasty spills. But you don’t really know CES until you’ve done it my way.

The day before my journey to CES I had to see the doctor about a swollen jaw. I turned out to be a swollen lymph node. I was prescribed generic antibiotics and steroids. The pharmacist consulted me on the steroids saying that it would make me feel a little off. “Wait. Off? What do you mean off, cause I’m heading to CES,” I said. I had to think about this. I didn’t want to go on some sort of roid rage at CES. You know it can happen, even without the roids.

“Oh. No. You’ll get a sense of euphoria.”

I thought about that for a second. Euphoria–that actually sounded good. And it was. I spent CES legally doped-up on steroids and generously claimed to be the only journalist on performance enhancing drugs. Although, it was clear to me that my performance was not at all enhanced. In fact, at an evening press event I clumsily fell into a PR’s lap and started chatting away like we were BFFs in the most embarrassing of ways. I know, it’s hard to imagine. But, it’s amazing how quickly we can make fools of ourselves when we forget who we are, either by way of prescribed performance enhancing drugs or the temptation of prescribed viral video.

One thing is for sure– there is no cure for stupidity. So long as their is a stage big enough, stupidity will continue to breed. What will be next year’s Rolly? If anything, CES ‘08 taught me that there is an audience for adolescent technology. What happens in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas. It’s gossip fodder and totally punishable– just like any good junior high prank.

Netflix and LG are hooking up HDTVs with direct-download movie content

Jan 3rd, 2008 by mmontgomery | 1

LG

Yes! I might just become an owner of an LG HDTV in 2008. Truth be told my Netflix mailing discipline is pathetic. I’m all for the “instantaneous” nature of downloads. Netflix already offers a download service that I can’t access because I own a Mac. I just hope the LG HDTV sets are affordable and will ship in moderate size (20-32 inch).

Only time will tell. Read more at the Market Watch blog. Here’s the LG press release.

Happy New Year: the year of the Tiger

Jan 2nd, 2008 by mmontgomery | 0

Tiger Attack

Ok, not so… we will be concluding the year of the Pig and starting the year of the Rat come February 7th. The year of the Tiger starts in 2010, but I felt that 2007 Pig was upstaged by a very well known Siberian tiger named Tatiana. Tatiana’s story reminded me that despite all the wonderful advancements we humans have made, we all still need some guidance from time to time. So, I wanted to pass on some wisdom for 2008– some food for thought, one might say.

Mark’s 2008 Proverbs

    1. Never provoke a 350-pound tiger, no matter how much fun it might seem.
    2. Don’t become a pack rat! Clean out your closets and recycle your belongings at Freecycle.org–you’ll save your landfill and you really only need half of what you think you need.
    3. Clear your mind– either by meditation, prayer or some other method. Try to find some peace and quiet.

That’s it. If you follow my wisdom for 2008 you’re pretty much going to have a great year. I’m very confident of that. Leave a comment if you have any wisdom you’d like to share.
