Darkness

Darkness is a music video created for my partners band Dorian Myshkin. It was my first attempt at using a bluescreen and creating complex layering of video files. All of the footage was shot in five hours with only a vague idea of how the finished project would appear (yeah I know…) so the greatest challenge to create a sense of flow in the footage. I tried to accomplish this by adding in a sense of time passing, day/night/morning but in the end decided that I should have gone back to film some more footage. Anyways… enjoy the song and hopefully the video; I promise a cleaner version next time. (At least a cleaner key for the bluescreen…)Greg.

    Hi Greg,

I found this piece to be nicely surreal. For some reason I was really taken with the non-standard composition of the shots with the main character looking up at the lady against the white background. The excessive use of white space really appealed to me, and the intentionally awkward framing of the subjects demanded that I focused on those shots more than I would have had it been framed in the more traditional rule of thirds style. A great example about how to get away with breaking the rules.
One improvement I would add (in addition to pulling a cleaner key :), would be to keep an eye on screen direction. If your purpose was to give the feeling of time passing and the main character hiking for days through the snow, you should have kept the direction of the main character constantly moving from left to right, or right to left, in all the shots. It would have sold the idea of a continuous journey better.
All in all I liked it, and please show us more of your work!

I briefly thought Air Bud was going to make an appearance. Too bad, I’m such a sucker for Air Bud. Anyway, good work, lots of originality, which is what’s most important to me in the music video category. Post more!
