DIY cast of Thousands

Caught a really fascinating video on kk.org on extra-less crowd scenes. Essentially with some relatively simple compositing, and an in-shape cast of a few people willing to run up and down a beach a hundred times, they were able to achieve a remarkably polished and believable Normandy invasion.
