Focus Enhancements Doubles DVCPRO HD Record Time and Adds QuickTime Support to FS-100

Version 3.0 firmware upgrade streamlines workflow for Final Cut Pro Users with native QuickTime support and more than doubles record time with native 720p support

Campbell, CA., January 31, 2007 — Focus Enhancements Inc(NASDAQ: FCSE), a worldwide leader in media acquisition, management and delivery technology, today announced the immediate availability of its new version 3.0 software for the FS-100 Portable Direct To Edit® (DTE) Recorder.

Version 3.0 adds native DVCPRO HD 720/24p, 25p and 30p recording capabilities, which more than doubles the record time on the FS-100.  In addition, version 3.0 adds native QuickTime® DVCPRO 50 and DVCPRO HD recording capabilities, which allows for direct import of clips into Apple’s Final Cut Pro nonlinear editing application.

“FS-100 has become the leading long form recording solution for Panasonic P2 camcorders, and with 3.0, recording times are increased significantly to extend in-the-field capabilities,” said Matt McEwen, senior product manager for Focus Enhancements.  “3.0 also greatly enhances workflow efficiency for Apple Final Cut Pro users.”

When recording native frame rates, users can more than double the record time on the FS-100 from 100 minutes to over 200 minutes.  By recording only the required frames, the bit rate for DVCPRO HD recordings drops to as low as 40Mb/s.  While camcorders, such as the Panasonic AG-HVX200 P2 camera/recorder do not output a stream via FireWire when set to native frame modes (pN), the FS-100 processor is capable of achieving the same native support by only recording the required frames when set to regular 720/24p, 25p and 30p modes.  QuickTime support also includes up to four channels of digital audio.

The 3.0 upgrade is available to existing FS-100 owners directly from the Focus website for $39.  All new FS-100 units manufactured after February 1, 2007 will ship with version 3.0. For more information on Focus Enhancements and its products, please visit www.focusinfo.com.

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

From a Canon Press Release:

CANON’S NEW FEATURE-PACKED HV20 HD CAMCORDER EXPANDS HIGH DEFINITION CAMCORDER CAPABILITIES AND CHOICES FOR

CONSUMERS

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., January 31, 2007 – Canon extends its leadership role in the creation of feature rich, high-quality, High Definition (HD) camcorders for consumers with the introduction of the Canon HV20 HD Camcorder. With its proud professional pedigree plain to see, the HV20 HD Camcorder draws on decades of Canon’s proven excellence in optics and technological innovation, incorporating professional level HD video features in a handy, horizontal-style, user-friendly design.

Integrating Canon’s renowned optics and imaging technology, including a 10x HD video zoom lens with Super Range Optical Image Stabilization and a Canon True HD 1920 x 1080 CMOS Image Sensor, the HV20 HD Camcorder records true 1080 high definition video, making it an ideal companion to today’s HD televisions. In fact, both aspiring filmmakers and home movie shooters can give their video a truly cinematic look and feel with the addition of a 24p Cinema Mode.

hv20_3q_front.jpg

“This HV20 HD Camcorder dramatically raises the bar for consumer camcorder capabilities, and will no doubt be the model of choice for discerning video enthusiasts who accept nothing less than premium quality equipment to capture and preserve their memories,” states Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager of the Consumer Imaging Group at Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Clearly, the High Definition video revolution is upon us, and as HDTV’s begin to dominate the marketplace, videographers and viewers will expect and demand superior image quality from their home video productions.”

In addition to the HV20 HD Camcorder’s horizontal design, the HV20 HD Camcorder incorporates an array of new and sought-after features and enhancements that offer users greater creative control and easier connectivity.

Among the new features within the Canon HV20 HD Camcorder is an Advanced Accessory Shoe capable of accommodating such additional components as select external video lights or directional microphones. The HV20 HD Camcorder also features microphone and headphone input terminals with manual level control for professional quality audio recording and a 24p Cinema Mode – found previously only on professional video equipment – that offers the frame rate of motion pictures and imparts a film-like look to the video. The HV20 HD Camcorder also features an HDMI terminal for quick and easy one-cable transport of the High Definition video signal to a HDTV.

Canon’s True HD CMOS Image Sensor (1920 x 1080)

Designed, developed, and manufactured by Canon for the EOS line of digital SLR cameras popular with professional photographers and advanced amateurs alike, Canon has created a 2.96 megapixel CMOS image sensor for the HV20 HD Camcorder. The 1/2.7” CMOS image sensor acquires image information at 1920 x 1080, reproducing life-like HD movies and photos. Canon’s HD CMOS Sensor also features on-chip noise reduction technology, to help ensure that even in dimly lit scenes, the signals from each pixel are as pure as possible, with minimal “noise” or other aberrations. The CMOS sensor also incorporates an RGB Primary Color Filter with a Bayer placement that delivers sharp, high definition image with vibrant, accurate color reproduction without creating false colors. As an added benefit, the HV20 HD Camcorder’s CMOS sensor provides outstanding image capture in low-light conditions.

Canon HD Optical Technology

Canon lenses are the choice of many imaging professionals the world over, whether those lenses are being used on EOS SLR cameras or on broadcast cameras. It is that expertise that has contributed to the design of the HV20 HD Camcorder’s 10x HD video zoom lens. The aspherical design of the lens helps to achieve low chromatic aberration and high resolution while Canon’s Super Spectra lens coating lowers incidence of flare and ghosting.

Since it is critical to achieve very sharp focus when shooting in High Definition, the camcorder features Canon’s revolutionary new Instant AF focusing system. It offers a dramatic improvement in autofocus speed and accuracy (compared to traditional autofocus systems). The Instant AF feature uses an external sensor, in combination with Canon’s autofocus system, to help significantly decrease the time it takes to find focus, even in low light conditions. This new system achieves focus almost instantaneously, reducing focus “hunting.” Users can especially see the benefits of Instant AF in high brightness and night shooting situations. Camera operators can capture fast, accurate focusing, even when following a moving subject.

Finally, Canon’s Super Range Optical Image Stabilization helps correct camera shake almost instantly even when the camera is hand-held and in motion or the zoom is held at a long focal length. Employing both gyro and vector detection methods in order to pick up the widest range of vibrations, the “lens shift” type OIS compensates for a greater degree of camera shake while avoiding the loss of image quality typical in electronic image stabilization systems. In addition, the OIS system can be engaged to help steady camcorder shake when shooting still images, which aids in photographing fast moving subjects or in low light conditions.

Canon’s DIGIC DV II Image Processor

Canon’s brilliant (and proprietary) video and still image processor, the DIGIC DV II, is the brains behind the HV20 HD Camcorder. The DIGIC DV II image processor is the next generation of Canon’s exclusive signal processing technology. In addition to recognizing the different color requirements of video and photos, and processing both to their optimal level of quality, DIGIC DV II processes video with improved color reproduction and dramatically reduces noise in low-light situations.

Shoot Like A Pro With 24p Cinema Mode

The HV20 HD Camcorder’s 24p Cinema Mode enables aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional “film-look.” The camcorder’s frame rate can be changed to 24p, which provides the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, the HV20’s CINE setting, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evokes the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together or independently.

Smooth and Easy Does It

Adding to the professional look of the HD video captured by the HV20 HD Camcorder is Canon’s Smooth Zoom Speed Control. Offering users a choice of three pre-set zoom speeds, the zoom speed control helps ensure that no matter how hard the user may press the zoom button, the pace of the zoom will remain smooth and constant.

The HV20 HD Camcorder’s Advanced Accessory Shoe will accommodate a more powerful external video light and directional microphone without the use of additional power or wires. It also includes a built in Ultra Video Light, which enables users to capture subjects in color under low light conditions from nearly five feet away.

The HV20 HD Camcorder even helps the user with shot composition, providing an easy to read level marker that is superimposed over the camcorder’s wide and bright 2.7-inch widescreen LCD display. Similarly, the HV20 HD Camcorder offers an easy-to-read grid marker that assists the user in determining the shot composition and ideal placement of the subject.

Advanced Photo Features

As a digital still camera, the HV20 HD Camcorder excels with all of Canon’s best digital camera features. Users can accurately focus their shots with nine-point autofocus and then take vibrant 3.1 megapixel images to a miniSD card. While simultaneously recording HD video to tape, the HV20 HD Camcorder can capture two megapixel photos to card, or these two megapixel images can later be extracted from the video itself, allowing users a second chance to snap that once in a lifetime image. To adapt to different shooting situations, the HV20 HD Camcorder has 11 shooting modes, including Continuous Shooting, which allows users to shoot up to five (3.1 megapixel) still images per second, as well as a built-in flash for low light situations. In addition, users can also connect a PictBridge compatible device to the camera for seamless still image transfer or printing. A histogram function is also included on the camcorder, to check exposure levels while shooting.

The Canon HV20 HD Camcorder kit includes a compact power adapter, a wireless remote control, the new, and energy efficient BP-2L13 battery pack, a stereo video cable, a USB cable and a component video cable. In stores in April, the HV20 HD Camcorder carries an estimated selling price of $1099*.

Grass Valley/Canopus updates EDIUS 4.1 and announces ProCoder 3.0 in the U.S.

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

1/30/07 Santa Monica, CA

Today, Grass Valley at their media summit has announced several key updates for EDIUS 4.1 and they introduced ProCoder 3.0 as well. First, the key updates for EDIUS include a new trimmer interface that draws upon more professional style clip trimmers allowing the user to pull/push in/out points in the preview window. This action will display your program timecode as well as the original clip timecode on both the out and in frames between clips. This allows for a much more simplified way of trimming up clips in your timeline without having to interface with each clip’s in/out point individually. It should save EDIUS editors a bundle of time while still allowing precise control. Also, the latest update includes project sequences to be nested within each other, a feature we’ve seen in other NLEs, but a first for EDIUS.

ProCoder 3.0 was also touched upon in their afternoon breakout discussion. This version will decode AVCHD footage to their HQ proprietary codec. There was no answer whether or not ProCoder 3.0 or later versions would support transcoding AVCHD to another, more flexible codec for use in other NLEs, but we were told that we’d find out soon. These presentations were good, but lacked some of the more technical issues we were after. Version 3.0 will also support multiple CPU MPEG-2 TS encoding of HD signals allowing users of multiple core processors (i.e., Intel Core 2 Duo) the added peformance they need. ProCoder 3.0 will be available as a standalone version priced at $499, or for upgrade or education use at $199.

Later this afternoon, Craig van Horne of Scorched Ice Digital will be sharing with us a little bit about his tapeless work flow using P2 media and the Grass Valley REV Pro. We hope we can report on this later.

UPDATE: Craig discussed his workflow briefly, which is by no means is revolutionary, as incorporating the REV Pro as medium for not only acquisition, but archival, playback and delivery. With REV Pro, Craig is able to take captures from his P2 media and back-up that footage quickly on a 30 GB disk using a laptop and the REV Pro drive. He then can archive that footage or use the disk as a playback source (either from the drive itself or simply putting the file back on a hard drive). Lastly, with Grass Valley TURBO he can then send the REV Pro disk as a deliverable, although, he admits there are not too many clients demanding REV Pro disks as a devlierable format (or medium). Nonetheless, the REV Pro got a lot of play during the panel’s discussion and it seems to be helping Craig out by saving him a great deal of cash, both in media costs and by eliminating the need to rent a professional HD deck. So, we’re naturally excited about it, too, and we’re highly anticipating the arrival of the REV Pro 70 GB disks.

CES Impressions

Monday, January 15th, 2007

CES 2007 was an evolutionary, not revolutionary event for consumer video. With a few stand-outs excepted (JVC’s HD Everio for example), camcorder manufacturers largely built on their existing HD product lines, with DVD, HDD, and Tape all being represented and refreshed.

There was strong support for the new AVCHD disc format, both with camera manufacturers, and with several editing software vendors adding support for this codec in upcoming releases. However it looks like you will be needing some pretty substantial hardware to edit in this heavily compressed format, with the words “quad-core” being thrown around by more than one manufacturer.

Blu-Ray and HDDVD continued to battle for dominance in the next generation disc wars, but the big news was a rapidly emerging trend of direct internet distribution, that just might make the physical disc formats irrelevant before the dust even settles.

JVC improves picture quality and convenience of Everio hard drive camcorder line

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

reprinted from a JVC press release:

GROUND-BREAKING JVC EVERIO HARD DRIVE CAMCORDER LINE BOOSTS PICTURE QUALITY AND CONVENIENCE FOR 2007

Hybrid Hard Drive/SD Line Includes 5.37-Megapixel Model for Razor-Sharp Still Images.

LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2007 – Reaffirming its leadership in the hard drive camcorder category, JVC today announced a new line of Everio G Series camcorders, featuring four new models that offer improved picture quality, enhanced convenience features and record to either a built-in 30GB hard drive or removable SD card.

For 2007, the Everio line, the world’s first hard drive camcorders, offers advanced imaging technology and a new level of versatility that allows users to master the art of video storytelling. Innovations include a new imaging engine, one-touch DVD burning, one-touch back-up to a PC, in-camera editing features, an Everio dock and support for SDHC, the new high-capacity SD card. In addition, the new flagship GZ-MG555 will produce razor-sharp still images thanks to a 5.37-megapixel CCD, the largest offered in a hard drive/SD camcorder.

JVC’s newly developed Gigabrid engine improves picture quality throughout the line-up by integrating various noise reduction technologies to increase the signal-to-noise ratio by about 30 percent (3dB) over previous models. All 2007 Everio models feature shooting sensitivity equal or better than previous models. CCD image sensors in the line-up range from 680k pixels to 5.37megapixels, tailored for various shooting needs.

For enhanced convenience, JVC’s Everio camcorders offer a range of new features, including:

  • Everio Dock – Most 2007 Everio models includes a docking station that the camcorder snaps into. Leave the dock connected to a display, PC or Everio SHARE STATION, and there’s no need to connect cables when transferring files or burning DVDs. The Everio dock also charges the camcorder’s battery;
  • One-touch direct DVD burning – a touch of the Direct DVD button is all that’s need to burn footage from the camcorder to a DVD. Newly recorded data will be transferred to the burner;
  • Direct Back-Up – One touch back-up of video files to a PC;
  • i.LINK (IEEE 1394) output on the Everio dock permits easy dubbing to DVD or hard drive recorders, and allows the footage to be imported by many third party NLE (non-linear editing) applications.

New Everios also offer a new in-camera editing function, which, when combined with other Everio functions, makes it simple to edit and organize files in the camera. New for 2007 is a Partial Delete function that allows a portion of a video file to be saved as a new file, leaving out the unwanted material. To organize files, Everios continue to offer a Playlist function for arranging the sequencing of clips for playback or burning to DVD. Combined with Event Selection, a carryover feature that allows the user to tag clips with an icon representing an event category, Everio now makes it easier than ever to view, edit and burn recordings to DVD.

For users interested in bypassing the fully automatic mode, 2007 Everios offer five shooting modes that are easily selected through the use of an LCD panel graphic that depicts the shooting mode dial found on many still cameras. A push of the camcorder’s stick controller to the left of the display brings up the graphic and modes are easily selected by pushing the control stick up or down. The stick controller also provides easy access to other menu settings and playback controls.

Also new for 2007 is the Quick Restart mode, which when engaged allows recording to start about one second after re-opening the LCD.

All Everio G Series camcorders continue to offer an SD card slot as an alternative to the hard drive for storing video and still recordings. New for 2007 is SDHC compatibility so they can handle the new generation of higher capacity cards. In addition, all Everio G Series camcorders have USB mass storage compatibility.

For editing and archiving footage, Everio camcorders come with a complete software suite. For Windows PCs, JVC includes CyberLink’s PowerCinema™ NE for Everio for browsing camera content and enabling Direct DVD/Direct Back-Up functions, PowerProducer™ 3 NE easy DVD burning, and PowerDirector™ 5 NE Express for editing.

The 2007 Everio line is comprised of four camcorders, each with a built-in 30GB hard drive. Each is compact and exceptionally lightweight, and all offer 16:9 recording and are equipped with a 2.7-inch widescreen LCD for real-time viewing of 16:9 aspect ratio video while shooting, and an SD card slot.

reprinted from a JVC press release:

WORLD’S FIRST FULL HD 1920×1080i CONSUMER CAMCORDER
JOINS JVC EVERIO HARD DRIVE CAMCORDER LINE

HD Everio Offers Five Hours of High-Definition Recording and Broadcast HD Camera Lens

LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2007 – JVC expands its award-winning Everio hard drive camcorder family with the addition of the HD Everio GZ-HD7, a new high definition camcorder that provides full HD 1920×1080i video quality combined with the convenience of hard drive recording.  Designed to enable consumers to conveniently capture and share their memories in full high definition without the need for removable tapes or discs, the HD Everio offers consumers the simplicity of a point-and-shoot camcorder combined with the features, technology and manual controls that appeal to the serious videographer.

With a 60GB built-in hard drive the JVC HD Everio provides up to five hours of full HD 1920×1080i recording at a high 30Mbps(MAX) Mbps.  To ensure the best possible image quality, it features three CCDs and a Fujinon lens.  Other features include optical image stabilization, a full array of manual controls, multiple digital connections, bundled editing and archiving software, and availability of an optional HD Everio SHARE STATION for easily transferring footage to disc.

In addition to its highest quality Full HD recording mode that records five hours of full HD 1920×1080i MPEG2 Transport Stream video with MPEG 1 Layer 2 audio, the HD Everio offers a long seven hour SP mode with a resolution of 1440×1080i, and a 1440CBR mode with a resolution of 1440×1080i and a five-hour capacity.  Also, because it records in the MPEG2 Transport Stream video format, HD Everio recordings can be archived onto Blu-ray discs using provided software and a high definition Blu-ray recorder.

Record Mode    Record Resolution    CODEC Video/Audio    System Bit Rate    Recording Time

For bright, realistic colors the HD Everio uses three 1/5-inch CCDs – one each for red, green and blue.  In addition, to ensure precise prism/CCD registration, JVC has incorporated Fujinon mounting technology used in professional camcorders.  Fujinon also supplies the HD Everio’s 10x optical zoom lens which provides superior optical performance and nearly the same brightness (F1.8-1.9) throughout its f=3.3mm~33mm zoom range by virtue of its three aspherical lens elements, one made of indexed glass. In addition, the lens surface is coated with a new Electronic Beam Coating (EBC) that greatly reduces degradation caused by light reflecting off the lens surfaces, leading to greater light transmission and reduced flaring and ghosting. To preserve that quality, the HD Everio features optical image stabilization, avoiding the signal degradation caused by electronic image stabilization, which might be particularly noticeable in HD footage. In short, HD Everio matches its high-definition recording capability with a proven HD lens section that has proven its value in the broadcast industry.

While the HD Everio offers fully automated operation for point and shoot simplicity, it also offers a wide range of manual controls.  These include a manual focus ring, manual white balance, exposure control, shutter priority mode, aperture priority mode and sharpness control.  In addition, a Focus Assist function displays the edge of the in-focus elements in color while the rest of the image is black-and-white, making it easy to check which image elements are in focus.  And a Zebra function displays a striped pattern across highlight areas on the image in the LCD monitor, making it easier to manually set the exposure.  Also included is a mic input for connecting an external microphone.

The HD Everio is equipped with three digital interfaces – USB, HDMI and i.LINK. USB is primarily for file saving, HDMI for digital viewing on large screen displays, and iLink streams high definition video in full resolution or 1440CBR mode. HD recorded material is down-converted for output in DV over i.LINK, or in standard definition via the analog component/ S-Video/ Composite output.

The HD Everio camcorder also connects to an optional JVC DVD burner, the HD Everio SHARE STATION CU-VD40, with a USB 2.0 cable and is controlled directly through the camcorder.  The SHARE STATION can be used to create HD data discs to archive HD video clip files and writes to both DVD-R and DVD-RW discs.   It also allows for the creation of digital stills in a JPEG format.  Dual-layer DVD-R is also supported, which means that the combination of the HD Everio and the CU-VD40 provides a PC-less solution to the high-capacity archiving needs of HD content.  HD and still files can be played back in ultra-high quality via the CU-VD40’s HDMI output without the use of a computer.  The HD Everio SHARE STATION also allows easy playback of archived files, without having to use the camcorder. Separately from the HD Everio, the CU-VD40 can be used as a DVD burner for PCs.

For editing and archiving via PC the HD Everio comes with the Cyberlink BD Solution software suite for Windows.  This includes PowerDirector for HD video editing, PowerProducer for authoring high definition Blu-ray discs and DVD-Video discs, and PowerCinema for HD file management and playback.

Optional accessories for the HD Everio include a 46mm telephoto and a 46mm wide conversion lens, a battery charger and three additional batteries including standard, high power and extended power.  Additional options include a stereo microphone.

Pricing and availability:
The HD Everio HD Hard Disk Camcorder (GZ-HD7) will be available in April at the MSRP of $1,799.95. The HD Everio SHARE STATION (CU-VD40) will be available in April at the MSRP of $399.95.

HITACHI’S NEW HYBRID CAMCORDERS OFFER BOTH DVD AND HARD DISK DRIVE RECORDING IN ONE DEVICE

– Innovative New Line Offers Advanced Technologies and Ease-of-Use Features at Affordable Prices –

LAS VEGAS (CES BOOTH 11906), Jan. 8, 2007 – Hitachi takes the guess work out of having to choose a camcorder format by combining the long recording times of hard disk drives and the easy-to-share attributes of DVDs. Consumers can record up to 23 hours of home videos and then dub a highlight reel to a DVD disk with a simple push of a button, bypassing the PC completely.
Hitachi America, Ltd. Ubiquitous Platform Systems Division’s consumer group today unveiled a new generation of UltraVision® camcorders that include the first two hybrid products capable of recording video directly to either formats. The DZH500A model, which was selected as an CES Innovations 2007 honoree in the Portable Electronics: Audio/Video category and records onto a wide array of DVD formats, including DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM and DVD+RW, features a 30GB hard drive, 30X optical zoom, SD memory card slot, and will be available in April for about $800. The DZHS300A, available today at retailers nationwide for about $600, features an 8GB hard drive, 25X optical zoom and SD memory card slot.
Hitachi Hybrid Camcorders lets consumers shoot and capture many hours of home movie memories directly to the built-in hard drive without changing discs or tapes or running out of space. The critical last step to enjoying and sharing these memories however is to transfer those movies from the Hard Drive to DVD’s, and the Hitachi Hybrid products are the only camcorders in the world that allow consumers to record to Hard Drive then transfer to DVD right in the camcorder with the push of a button.
“The Hitachi Hybrid DVD+HDD camcorders provide customers with the ultimate convenience of a single, affordable device capable of supporting the two most popular video formats on the market today,” said Jeff Fochtman, product manager for Hitachi America, Ltd., Ubiquitous Platform Systems Division. “Customers who value ease of use in a high-technology product are very excited about the hybrid camcorder’s ability to dub multiple DVDs straight from the camcorder’s hard drive.”
Rounding out Hitachi’s new camcorder line, the UltraVision® DZGX5080A and UltraVision DZGX5020A DVD camcorders provide DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM and DVD+RW format support along with a large 2.7-inch widescreen LCD in true 16:9 aspect ratio and a 30x optical zoom.
