On set at Videomaker’s workshop

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

A suspense building Handheld ShotWe’re hosting another Basics of Video Production Workshop here in our home town. There is a bit of mystery and danger in this workshop’s production. This shot, using a handheld shooting technique, will certainly help build the suspense in their story. It takes good planning and some hard work to put together a short video using the techniques covered in the previous day’s lectures. In the end, the trials and errors while working on a full production (planning, shooting, editing) proves to be the most educational. Here’s another shot of the team preparing for a special in-camera effect.

Scene Set-up We of course would like to thank our sponsors this year: Sony and Adobe. Sony has provided us with several HDR-FX7 HDV camcorders. Once again this weekend we realized just how well these camcorders can hold detail in the highlights. We shot in some high-contrast wooded areas in broad daylight and didn’t have to compromise the exposure as much as we had expected. And, Adobe has provided us with their Production Suite software to edit this story in such little time, which speaks to it’s stability and functionality.

We’re looking forward to seeing the final video. Six more hours in post-production and it should be ready for it’s premiere at the office. The rest of you will have to wait a bit longer before it’s updated to our YouTube Channel. Go there if you want to see more Workshop created videos– we have fun making them and hopefully you’ll enjoy watching them. Last but not least, here’s a pic of the video being pieced together in our studio. Editing is so much fun…

Thought Equity Motion and HBO release historic film footage

The March of Time
One of my worst subjects in school was U.S. History. I know, I should be ashamed of myself. I could never admit this to my grandparents who would have been appalled by my lack of knowledge and appreciation of our history. So, when I saw this come across the news wire, I felt (with a healthy dose of guilt) that it was my patriotic duty to share with the rest of you that The March of Time (R) Collection is now available to license in your next video. Whether you can afford it is another question. But, for you documentary filmakers out there, you should find this collection a great resource. Now, go put it to use and teach some of us something we didn’t know about this country. That’s right, I put my educational responsibilities in the hands of anyone but myself.

YouTube Awards gets the Smosh

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

21 Million views can’t be wrong, can they? The winner for Best Comedy has had an amazing amount of viewership, but it takes more than views to win.

Online awards for excellent video isn’t exactly new, but YouTube has stepped up to the plate with a hefty offering. This week they announced the winners of the first YouTube Video Awards.
Each Award Winner is given special placement on YouTube’s page, which we think more than makes up for the fact that no monetary prizes were offered out.

Among the winners basking in YouTube Award bliss is a team called Smosh.  Proclaimed “The first superstars of web TV” by BBC News late last year, Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox have just won YouTube’s Best Comedy Award for their video called “Stranded”. The two teenagers from Carmichael California have produced a handful of videos ranging from wacky to insightful, and boast a whopping 21,731,691 views for their early video entitled “Pokemon Theme Music Video”.

I wonder what’ll happen when YouTube goes mobile in June?

TI-ny Projector at CTIA

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

The CTIA Wireless 2007 show produced a few new items that video producers are sure to want.

A company named TI made a big splash with it’s micro-sized movie projector that fits inside of a cell phone. Okay, we know it was displayed at CES earlier this year, but this time it’s the real working model. The product displays a DVD-quality image from its tiny laser, making for a good mobile replacement for the Ol’ boob tube.

Can anyone else smell a mobile video festival?

Mac OS 10.4.9 bug

Monday, March 26th, 2007

It’s ripe time to hold back that antsy mouse-clickin’-auto-software-updatin’ trigger finger of yours.

Many Final Cut users have reported problems with Apple’s latest OS update, 10.4.9. And Apple has issued a response.

It seems that Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0 are affected by the bug. If you are in mid-project, we urge you to resist updating your software until a patch has been issued.

Watch Justin.tv, or not

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Wired News ran an article this morning on Justin, a videoblogger from San Francisco who recently launched Justin.tv. What’s there to watch? Well, um, it’s more about how much than what. You can watch as much as you want, 24/7 thanks to the camcorder he has mounted to his head.
We recognized Justin from the SF Video 2.0 Meetup video that we made. He’s in there at about the 50 second mark.
Videomaker caught up with Justin for a brief moment this afternoon and asked him a few questions about his newest endeavor (his cell phone number appears on his homepage). He explained that he and his friends have had the idea cooking for about 5 months, and that his crew plans on offering a video service in the future.
The idea is fun, but I wonder if it’s Acceptable?

On The Lot

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

If you haven’t heard about this new show or seen the promo FOX Network is running nightly (this might be the point in time where we weed out American Idol viewers) then now is the time to tell the rest of you (maybe 1% of you) about On The Lot. It’s a new TV show created by Mark Burnett, the most prominent reality TV producer, and Steven Spielberg, a film director who you may have heard of once (please read sarcasm).

The premise is, of course, to make a reality TV spectacle of being a short film director, where one lucky and relatively unknown director will win a $1 million development deal with Dreamworks. Sounds good, huh? Contestants will have to pass through a gauntlet of short film making 101 tests, where the viewers vote for the best short film weekly. Apparently, it’s not too late to submit a film to their website which might get you on the show. We encourage you to do so and we wish you the best of luck. But, if it doesn’t work out, you can always create your fame nearly overnight, like someone who we recently spoke with, using your video skills in another way. Andrew Burke will be blogging about him later today– stay tuned.

Sanyo announces AVC/H.264 Camcorder

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

reprinted from a Sanyo press release:

First SANYO Digital Video Camera to Use Next-Generation AVC/H.264

Video Technology Will Have April U.S. Debut

SANYO Xacti CG65 Features Superior Video Quality and 25% Smaller File Size for Faster Sharing of Clips on Web Pages, Video Blogs and Popular Video Websites

CHATSWORTH, Calif., March 20 /PRNewswire/ — Set for an April U.S. debut, the pocket-sized Xacti CG65 is SANYO’s first digital video camera to feature next-generation Advanced Video Codec H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) video compression technology, designed to produce excellent video quality while reducing MPEG-4 file size approximately 25%.  The slim and stylish CG65 ($399.99 MSRP(*1)) is an ideal video camera for people who want to easily upload and share video clips with friends and the world at large via web pages, vlogs, podcasts and popular video sharing websites.  The CG65 is an

eye-catching choice in available colors of black, silver and green.

    (Photo:  http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20070320/LATU047 )

The SANYO Xacti VPC-CG65 features a built-in Gyro Sensor shake-resistant system for correcting unintentional camera shake during photo taking.  In addition, high-speed video-processing using 9-pixel mixture technology makes recording of both movies and stills possible even in semi-dark or under lit environments of approximately 2 lux.

“The SANYO Xacti CG65 is an advanced video camera and 6-megapixel still camera that is designed for today’s generation of video sharing enthusiasts,” said John Lamb, Senior Marketing Manager of SANYO Fisher Company’s Audio Video Division.  “The Advanced Video Codec H.264 used in the Xacti CG65 provides an optimal combination of high-quality video and ultra-compact file size that’s ideally suited for uploading videos to friends, family and the world.”

Advanced H.264 compression: High-quality videos with internet portable file sizes

The Xacti CG65 makes posting movies on the internet or e-mailing them to friends and family easier by reducing the file size.  In fact, the file size can be reduced by up to 25% over typical MPEG-4 cameras.  To accomplish the complexity of encoding AVC/H.264 in real-time on the CG65, a dedicated Qpixel brand H.264 video compression IC was incorporated into the camera that was designed specifically for portable consumer devices to achieve high video quality while simultaneously reducing the system power consumption.  The result is high-quality video recoding up to a total of 10 hours(*2) with an

8 GB SDHC memory card.  The CG65 can also record up to a total of 5 hours of video with a 4 GB SDHC memory card, up to 2.5 hours with a standard 2 GB SD card, and up to 1.25 hours with a standard 1 GB SD card.

    Ergonomic one-hand design

The ergonomic, vertical design of the compact camera allows natural body posture when shooting VGA-quality (640 x480 pixels) movies and 6.0-megapixel high-resolution stills.  You can even capture 6-megapixel still photos simultaneously while recording movies.  Use just one thumb to easily operate the camera and effortlessly choose video or still image on the fly.

Video files can be handled just like photo files, because the image and sound data for each video clip are combined in a single file.  Saving recorded movies and photos on a computer is as easy as copying a file.

    High-sensitivity

The high-speed video-processing makes high-sensitivity recording of both movies and stills possible.  For movies, the 9-pixel mixture technology accommodates shooting in dark environments.  When the Scene Select function’s lamp mode is selected, the frame rate is automatically adjusted, making it possible to capture even under lit subjects of approximately 2 lux(*3).  Movies recorded even in a dimly lit restaurant or outside at twilight(*4) look remarkable.  For stills, the ISO 1600 sensitivity setting produces

high-resolution 6-megapixel images.  You can get natural colors and sharply focused faces even without using a tripod or in places you might not want to use the flash, such as when shooting indoors or for night scenes.

    Shake-resistant stills and video

The VPC-CG65 incorporates a novel “digital camera-shake-resistant” system(*5) utilizing the most advanced digital processing technologies.  A built-in gyro sensor detects the direction and amount of camera shake during photo-taking and, based on that data, a digital filter cancels the camera shake component of the captured image.  This anti-shake system is integrated into the camera without sacrificing the CG65’s stylish slim and light design. Because the VPC-CG65 also offers conventional digital camera shake correction for movie recording, you can both take photos and record movies without worrying about camera shake.

Other SANYO Xacti CG65 Features include:

    - USB battery charging(*6) by simply connecting the unit to your

      computer’s USB port

    - “Screen capture function” to record the screen image from your computer

      monitor
