From A SmartSound Press Release:

Hit Films Tropic Thunder, The Bucket List Feature SmartSound Music

Music Quality and Creative Control Make SmartSound the Superior Library Choice for Feature Film Music Editors

NORTHRIDGE, CA ‘ August 27, 2008 ‘ SmartSound Software, Inc. is proud to announce the inclusion of seven SmartSound music tracks in the current DreamWorks’ hit ‘Tropic Thunder,’ starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black & Robert Downey, Jr., currently the #1 film in the nation.  SmartSound’s thousands of music tracks, coupled with its industry-leading scoring software, Sonicfire Pro 4.5, enables music editors to quickly and professionally customize music for films while achieving the artistic vision of the director.

Sonicfire Pro’s intuitive process is revolutionizing the production music library industry. No other music library offers the creative control and flexibility to automatically adjust the length, mix, mood, arrangement and timing of a prerecorded music track.  ‘I’ve worked with a lot of music libraries for films and SmartSound is unique because it gives us the ability to adjust the music to fit the scene with great detail and precision, using high quality, well-produced music,’ said Scott Stambler, a professional music editor and composer.

These unique customization features give editors and directors a dynamic new way to use library music.  The innovations in the SmartSound solution bring a level of creativity that has never been offered by another production music company. For example, SmartSound’s Mood Mapping technology, available exclusively in SmartSound’s Sonicfire Pro software, can be used to easily assign custom mixes and moods to the music as the scene progresses.  The result is a custom-fit score completed quickly and professionally.  In editing music for ‘The Bucket List,’ Stambler included three songs from the SmartSound music library.  ‘The ultimate compliment was when Rob Reiner told me on the dub stage that one of the SmartSound cues worked better than the pricey source cue we had in the temp.  Ultimately, SmartSound saved ‘The Bucket List’ thousands in licensing fees.’

‘We’re seeing a lot more film editors embrace the SmartSound solution,’ said Brian Dickman, vice president of Sales & Marketing for SmartSound Software, Inc.  ‘Our outstanding music quality, coupled with our innovative customization features for editors and filmmakers, has resulted in new creative options that redefine the role library music can play in a film.’

Stambler notes ‘I’ve seen SmartSound ads in the trade magazines, but I hadn’t researched it until a client asked about it.  Experiencing the SmartSound solution firsthand will do more for a professional editor than any recommendation or advertisement could do.’

SmartSound has a library of over 170 music discs with 3 to 4 new discs added every month.  Sample the music and learn more about Sonicfire Pro’s unique features at www.smartsound.com or call (800) 454-1900 to request a free on-site or online demonstration.

FCC Proposes Ban on Wireless Microphones in the 700MHz Spectrum

by jburkhart | August 22nd, 2008

Radio WavesOver at ArsTechnica, there’s a great writeup on the FCC’s proposed ban on wireless microphones that operate between the 698-806MHz frequencies.

The FCC recently auctioned this space off due to the end of terrestrial analog broadcast in February of 2009, and the telecom companies that bought this spectrum, don’t want wireless mics interfering with their new frequencies.

“In July, a consortium of public interest groups warned the FCC that unlicensed wireless mic use in the area poses a threat that will become more pronounced after the DTV deadline. The Public Interest Spectrum Coalition’s (PISC) petition estimates that between 500,000 to 1 million unauthorized wireless mic systems operate in the 700MHz channels, “creating pools of potential interference that could undermine the reliability of these new public safety and commercial wireless systems.”

Most manufacturers stopped selling mics in this range last year, but if you have an older wireless system it’s possible that your wireless mic could soon be illegal to use in the United States, if it falls within those frequency ranges.

The complaint specifically targets these manufacturers:

Complaint of Public Interest Spectrum Coalition (PISC) Against Shure, Inc., Nady Systems, Inc., VocoPro, Audio2000, Sennheiser Electronic Corporation, Audix Microphones, Electro Voice, Hisonic International, Inc., Pyle Audio, et al.

Here come the contest entries…

by cfulton | August 15th, 2008

The 2008 Videomaker/Canon Short Video Contest is underway! The first entries are beginning to arrive and are being captured into our system. We can’t wait to see your entries, so don’t delay!

Over the course of this contest, we will be testing out TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress to conform all of the entries to a standard format for judging. The first look at this encoding software shows that it can import pretty much any file format that you can throw at it, and the resulting video output is very clean. It can’t directly handle ripped VOB files from a DVD, though, but it’s easy enough to import DVDs directly into the program for further processing. The program also makes cut-editing very easy to perform, the encoding is as quick as we could hope for on the system we’re running it on, and the batch encoding features work as advertised. It’s a very strong contender as far as encoding software goes.

Reprinted from a HP press release:HP EliteBook 8730w Mobile Workstation

Today at SIGGRAPH 2008, HP expanded its DreamColor technology portfolio with the introduction of a powerful mobile workstation – the HP EliteBook 8730w Mobile Workstation with DreamColor Display – that offers professionals exceptional color accuracy.

In addition, HP introduced the HP EliteBook 8530w Mobile Workstation, the HP EliteBook 8530p Notebook PC, a customer calibration kit for the now-shipping DreamColor LP2480zx Professional Display, and two additional high-performance displays to meet the demands of a new generation of visual computing customers.

Rode Announces New Procaster Microphone

by jburkhart | August 8th, 2008

Rode ProcasterOne of the nicest benefits of the recent pod-casting craze has been a demand for affordable studio voice microphones. Videographers mostly use these mics for voice-over work in post production, as their pickup pattern and bulk make them unsuitable to use in the field.

Rode has released the Procaster for those needing a nice sounding voice microphone, but not needing to spend thousands of dollars on a top-end diaphragm mic. This model includes an internal pop filter, which is a nice touch, for keeping plosives (the “P” or “B” sounds) from distorting.

From a RODE press release:

Introducing the new RØDE Procaster broadcast quality microphone.

The RØDE Procaster is a professional, broadcast quality dynamic microphone, specifically designed to offer no-compromise performance for voice applications in broadcast environments.

Featuring a tight polar pattern and tailored-for-voice frequency response, the Procaster is perfect for every application where a great sounding, rugged microphone with superior ambient noise rejection is demanded.

With its retro inspired design, the Procaster combines a traditional aesthetic with advanced technology to create a broadcast workhorse that is destined to quickly become an industry standard.

“My voice is my signature, and I won’t compromise when it comes to microphone
performance.” commented Ken Sparkes, the ‘Voice of Austraila’, when given an
opportunity to field test the Procaster. “The RØDE Procaster is one of the few microphones to come on the market in recent years that I believe will become an industry standard for ‘on air’ excellence.”

The Procaster is fully compatible with the RØDE PSA1 studio arm and PSM1 shock mount, for professional microphone mounting.

Key features:
•    Broadcast quality sound
•    High output dynamic capsule
•    Balanced, low impedance output
•    Internal shock mounting of capsule for low handling noise
•    Internal pop-filter to reduce plosives
•    Robust, all metal construction
•    Designed and manufactured in Australia
•    Ten year warranty
