Hi -

I just got a Sony HDR SR11 camcorder, and have problems getting my video from the camcorder into my Pinnacle Studio 11 software. Unfortunately, the camera does not have a Firewire connector which I used with my old Sony Digital 8 directly into an external drive.

I installed the Motion Picture Browser and that got the clips onto my "C" Drive, but when I try to export it to Studio 11, it won't let me do it.

I'm hoping it's just a simple thing that I am missing, but I want to get the video directly into my Studio 11 from my external hard drive.

Thanks.

Basically, I don't get playback on this thing (which is borrowed.) It seems like the only playback function is an End Search, and Final Cut Pro isn't talking to it.

Any idea how to playback and/or capture with Final Cut Pro? Seems like it should be straightforward, but...

My first recommendatioin to you is to stop taking advice from people who can't (or won't) explain their reasoning. Because there is no good reason for you not to use miniDV tape to shoot your videos. When you want to discuss high end production techniques, there is a standard set for HDVPRO100 on DVCAM tapes. And your advisors are quibbling about XDCAM or P2 cards or insisting the only reasonable option is the rew Red 4K system. And all the other technical nonsense about what they'd use if they ever got a budget.

Best as I can tell, you are asking about the Sony HVRHD1000u. Which appears to be an excellent choice for getting into HD video at an affordable price. But part of getting the price under two grand means you're not getting three chips. So using miniDV tapes in the HD1080 mode puts all the quality the CMOS pickup can muster onto the tape. Now when you are talking three chip camcorders, it isn't too tough to find a number of camcorders that are saving into hard drives to record higher quality data. But when you look at the actual bit rates that the data is being compressed into, you'll see nothing in the prosumer range that sustains a higher bit rate than the 25 Mbps of miniDV tape. So the biggest value (at this point in time) of not using videotape is that it doesn't need to be converted into a computer file before use. It is starting to appear there will be some de facto formats using H.264 codecs for flash memory or hard drives. But right now, the HD video source formats are in turmoil. Let the market work itself out while you get some practice.

While the HVRHD1000u is an excellent camcorder, you will grow out of it in a few years. But what you will learn in those years can only be taught by getting ass deep in a shoot that's going nothing like you'd expected. Now there's a learning opportunity! Once the camcorder becomes your B-roll camcorder, you'll know what media you want for the new camcorder.

Good luck and remember, quality required is dependent on distribution. (So while the camcorder you ask about isn't quite up to BluRay distribution, it should be more than sufficient for DVD distribution.)

The owner used it for minimal church work and says very low hours? it looks immaculate!!

Hello All,

Here is the deal, I have an vx2000, I mostly shoot weddings..I have a chance to buy a DSR250 and a DSR 200 both for $1500.00..

I don't know know any more about them other than specs I have been reading this morning. I am mostly concerned about quality matching on them with the 2000. Are they decent cameras? This seems like a very good price and the seller who lives very close to me will let me take them home for a test drive. Includes lenses, cases, batts etc...sounds like a fairly decent price if the quality is there?

Thanks,Harry

I have owned the camera for a few months now. I use the camera to shoot events (weddings, etc). I am very happy with it! Excellent picture and easy to operate. The price was right too. Plus it just looks "CAMERA." And despite what some may say, looks matter. You are taken more seriously if you have a professional looking camera.

Be warned, it is a little weak in low light situations! Be prepared to to have an on camera light or studio lights to make sure your picture does not get too grainy. But on an outside shoot with decent sunlight, the picture is amazing. Also it is a very stable camera.

I read through your post and I have to say that more of what I shoot today is HD. I started with the FX1 which by the way is/was and still is a great camera. Once my clients have seen HD theres no going back. Sony makes quality gear priced at prosumer as well as Pro gear and has lead the pack in technologies. I'm sure everyone has an opinion here since your on the Sony forum Im assuming you want to go with Sony. Right now XDCAM is on my wish list. Now have I looked at other cameras u bet. The new Panasonic AG-HMC150 reviewed right here on Videomaker looks real enticing.

About editing you can end up spending the same amount or more for a NLE work station. I have 3 Dells 4gig memory 1 terabyte in each,

I swear some days it just dosen't seem fast enough. Then youve got editing software. I use a combination of them depending on what I want to kick out and the quality. The first editing pkg I had was Ulead Studio and Pinnacle's Studio 9 or was it 10 and of course in no time they both pushed out upgrades for editing HD. Did I jump for joy NO.

Try putting a 30 minute length of video that you want with additional overlays and titling and the next sequence of video and start adding transitions and effects and...... Well it's great for doing short 3- 5 minute pieces if your just doing some web stuff or you like youtube video.

So next comes the systems above and the Adobe Premire Production Suite CS3 and plugins

Your friend above had some solid advice, start with something versatile used is hard to do but you can try renting a couple to see what you think about them. Today I want 24p 1080i/60p 30p film like etc. it's not cheap but boy has it all come down price. Theres a new sony FX1000 also on review here which is to replace the FX7 It's amazing to me that I still see the FX1 for as much as 3,000. My bet is that your going to see some great prices real soon..........that is if you can stand the wait I never can.

Many editing programs have an option to create their own scenes or allow you to capture as one continuous clip to your computer. I am unsure if working with DVD the scenes are already created on their own each time you hit record/stop. I'd say take a very close look through your options and menus on both the editing program, and the camera.

When you say you're not having much luck in editing, what do you mean?

HI - I'm looking for the best price on the Sony HDR SR11 Camcorder. Retail prices are quoted at $1199. Amazon.com gets it down to $999. Looking further Online, I found a site (Photo.net) which is supposed to compare different mailorder sellers.

They listed a company called Sonic Cameras which listed this camcorder at (get ready) $399!!!! How can this be? Is anyone familiar with this company? They say in their ad that the camera is new.

I'd appreciate any help if anyone knows about this, or is it some kind of a scam? Maybe the hard drive is extra!!

1800 sounds like a good deal, but anything under 3K is pretty much my budget (sorta). I guess a question I have is what sort of mics and such you (or others) are using with the PD170. I was hunting around for compatible devices and couldn't come up with much which means that either very few things are capable of hooking up with it, or just about everything is capable of hooking up with it...within reason of course.

Some obvious must haves for me are lighting, mics (shotgun, lav, etc), Hard Disk Recorder, filters, telephoto lense, and battery belt. Anything I'm missing? I'm such a noob.

Also I think a common misconception is the workflow. I haven't used any HD cameras yet, but my teachers at school have said with the Panasonic cameras and P2 cards, depending on what your computer set up is like, you don't know what your footage truly looks like until you drop it onto your timeline and then render it. If you've got a slow computer, this process will probably take longer than current DV workflow. Who wants to render possibly hours of footage just to see if it came out OK? So the point my one teacher was trying to make is that the process isn't really "fun" yet, but the end result can be outstanding if you record in the right format and handle post production properly. So I guess you have to ask yourself if going through a crappy post production process is worth it. For me, no. For The Discovery Channel, yes. I'm sure they have badass post production suites that render in real time.

Not needing an XLR adapter is very convenient, more than you may think. I had a GL2 and used an adapter on a shoot and it was so cumbersome. It's the reason why I got a PD170. Depending on what kind of work you do and where you think you will be in the future, I recommend looking for a used PD170. New ones are about 3 grand, but I got mine used for 1800. Just be sure to meet in person and thoroughly inspect the camera before handing over any money.

It's a weird time period right now, and I don't think it's worth buying a new SD camera right now if you can make good use of a good condition used camera. Technology progresses fast, and transitioning to HD might not be a bad idea in a year or two from now. So save some money now. Spend more money on good audio and lighting equipment instead of getting the "latest and greatest" HD camera. What good is the latest and greatest if your lighting and audio sucks anyway, right?

I think it's too soon to go HD. Not many people can view it, I've heard that even pros don't output in HD. They just record in HD and then downconvert on the import. I recommend the Sony PD170. It's basically the VX2100, but it has XLR connections. Works very well in low light. I've used the XL1s before, but I didn't really like it. Invest in lights too. Don't be one of those dudes who has a solid camera but no lights.

Thanks for all the good information. I've always heard mixed/bad things about shooting in HD, but now a days it just seems like the way to go, but apparently it's not. The PD170 appears to be a good camera and the bonus of XLR connections makes life a little easier and cheaper not needing an adapter. Truthfully until recently I have never studied all the ins and outs of different cameras and accessories. I'm picking up alot quickly, but I suppose I must when looking to invest a few thousand dollars into my future.

If you do choose to go HD, I would avoid the HDV codec. It's buggy because it has a data rate of 25mbps, which is the same as DV. Also, if you go HD, you need to have a computer that can handle it. I'm sure it not hard for a computer to cut HD, but when you get into effects and graphics, you'll need a decent computer.

I'm a budding video production graduate who's done a few freelance projects from sporting events, to wrestling, to documentaries and interviews. Currently I am working with a Sony TRV17 amateur consumer level 1 CCD camera. In order to expand my business (or rather get it off the ground) I feel it is certainly time to upgrade to something more professional. I've looked at the Canon XL2 with mixed emotions and a handful of Sony cameras and seem to have settled on either the VX2100 or the FX7.

I'm in the market for something that is versatile, but I am unsure if HD is the way to go. The FX7 interests me a bit more due to its ability to record in either HD or Standard Def. I am looking for some real feedback from users instead of reviews and lists of specs which don't tell me what I really want to know and can't answer my questions.

Things I will be using it for; sporting events, plays, recitals, weddings, and the usual rundown of video for hire jobs. Of course eventually I would like to expand myself further than the money making jobs and venture into real film, movies and indie projects.

I have a SR11 and edit with Vegas Pro 8 on my Dell Inspiron D630 (Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM) laptop.

I copy the MTS (AVCHD) files directly from the camera via USB and while it does stutter sometimes in the editor's playback, it is acceptable enough to use. Rendering is decent as well (just watch those filters).

Let me jump in and recommend the software by the same company that made your camcorder, Sony Vegas. I've always used Vegas with my Sony camcorders and never once had a problem. (Okay, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have a problem with any mid-level NLE.) Of course I also use a Sony computer, just to keep it all as simple as possible. If you don't want to spring for Vegas 8.0 w/DVD Architect, I think you'd find Vegas Platinum Plus, at less than $130, to be a very workable substitute. I routinely use a version of Vegas Home Studio for multi-cam productions including several graphics overlays and multi-channel audio mixing.

And let me add that I've read a lot of conflicting information about just how "standard" the AVCHD format actually is. According to my sources, each camcorder manufacturer creates a slightly different version of AVCHD video. By using the Sony software with a Sony camcorder, you will have the least chance of any incompatibility issues.

And that is my opinion with an emphasis on opinion.

just ordered a Sony HDR-SR12 HD HDD camcorder.

I'd appreciate any comments from current users on editing software.
