you'd be surprised how much adding an old projector sound effect will help.

and film scratches over the video to enhance that. Now, you can add little jump cuts here and there and even add static pops to the audio in those places.

I finally got Avid Free DV to work!!!! I'm jazzed! I just clicked on this "Toggle Digital Video On" icon on the timeline and that seems to have fixed it.

The mysterious F track now shows my video from the V track so I can see what each clip is. It's seems to be very useful, because if I don't know what clip is which, I can just look up on the F track and see a frame of the video. Interesting. It's kinda like Vegas.

I don't really care as long as it works.

Hey Chris, I just want to tell you that I've been using Avid for the past three years and I think that there could never be any other editing software for me. I know a little of Premier Pro but it's not as good as Avid. Vegas is too difficult; I tried learning it with the aid of Spotted Eagle's book and I gave up. I would advise you to go ahead and buy Avid, and forget about the freebie. And if you do, I also recommend that you buy this book also: "Editing with Avid Express Pro and Avid Express DV" It's an Avid Educational Series Book. Avid is "it" in the professional world and if you're serious about editing you must get Avid. Why do you think it costs so much?

OK, I found a copy of Avid Free DV and am learning it with many problems that I've been gradually overcoming.

One puzzle is, in my Timeline, I have this strange track on top with the abbreviation "F". I understand what "V" , "A1", "A2" and even what "TC" is. But this "F" track is a puzzler. It doesn't seem to be doing anything, and I'm wondering if it is the reason for some of my other problems. The "clip" thing on it looks like a video clip in Sony Vegas, but this isn't Vegas and it doesn't look like the Avid video clip on the track below. There's a wierd looking TV static looking thing inside.

Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

I am trying to simulate the audio of old newsreels, tv, radio, etc. from around the thirties and fourties. I'm not sure how to properly describe it but sometimes it sounds not as crisp, somewhat raspy, and maybe even a little distant. But I'm relatively new to audio editing techniques and could use some help. I use Xpress Pro 5.8, and maybe there's an option right in the audio tool to simulate such an effect? Any ideas? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

LeftTurnLarry, Thanks very much for your advice, but that is what I am doing right now. What I would like to learn is Multicam editing (in Avid). In Multicam editing, all the cameras (whether two, three or four) must run simultaneously without any one stopping. Then in editing, you put each camera's video footage on a separate video track and the audio from the main camera on one audio track. Each camera's footage must have a sync mark at the beginning, say a flash from a still camera or if possible, from a clapper. All of these marks would be the "in" point. Then you hit play and using your keyboard you can switch between cameras, like they do on live televsion. That's all I know. Perhaps if anyone knows of a book which explains this technique, please tell me. I know its easy on Premiere Pro, but I'm an Avid man. I would really like to learn how it's done in Avid. The manual and Help explain how to go about it but I'd be better off bouncing my head against a concrete wall. Thanks again. Sham.

Don't use the audio from camera two. Always stay on the audio from camera one and just place the crowd video where you want it.

Lay down the footage from camera one (of the speaker) with audio. Then just lay down clips from camera two (without the audio) onto a higher track on your timeline. Simple.

I shoot events in which a person speaks and an audience listens. I use two cameras; camera one on the speaker runs continuously and camera two on the audience starts and stops, recording people's reactions. I then capture the both cameras' footage into Avid Express Pro and edit using conventional means. The finished edit appears as if it was shot using a switcher. But the work is time consuming. I have to listen to the voice on camera two and then sync it with the audio of camera one. I know Multicam editing would be the solution, but I just don't know how to go about it. I tried using the Help but learning Greek might be easier. I'd be grateful for some help.

Avid used to have a download called Avid FreeDV. It was a basic version that was great for learning the UI of the Avid software. You can't download it from Avid's website anymore, but here's link where you can get it: http://download.chip.eu/en/Avid-Free-DV-1.6.1_101934.html# It offers limited audio and video tracks, but it is good for learning.

Hey!

I got turned down for a pretty good job today because I know Final Cut and Vegas, but NOT Avid.

I'm thinking about teaching myself in case this comes up again. However there are no Avid Free Trials on the website. Sony and Adobe both have free trials. I'm wondering:

1. Why Avid doesn't have any free trials?

2. If there's somewhere I can go to get one?

3. If this is worth my time? This is actually the first job I remember coming across that requires Avid knowledge.

Thanks!

Well I use it for premiere pro and after effects currently, but I was thinking of stepping up to avid xpress pro. I read that Avid doesn't yet support vista. What should I do? I thought about getting XP Pro, but then I wouldn't be able to use the dvr function because that is through Windows Media Center. Does anyone have any advice they can give me? Does anyone have an idea when Vista will be supported? Thanks

In answer to the question about certification for the VES/Delta workstation....

Yes, it is in the process of being officially certified. We have received a lot of encouragement from many folks and techs at AVID and Pinnacle (unofficially); and our engineers are in discussion to make our system OFFICIALLY AVID CERTIFIED. It is taking a little bit of time due to a large number of personnel changes and restructuring at AVID, but it should not be much longer. Unofficially, everyone that we have demo'd the unit for has been really impressed with the whole concept.

Should probably point out here that Avid is only supported on specific tested workstations and laptops.
Getting used to a new work flow always comes with some problems. Perseverance is key, there will be some things that you will like more about Avid, and there will be things you like more about Vegas. It's always good to know the tools...

1) At the bottom of your timeline in the very lower left hand corner of the window, is a "hamburger menu" (it used to look like a hamburger back in the day, now it looks like a rectangle with a black line in the middle). Click on that, and a drop down menu will open. Select Audio Data and then select "sample plot". You can also view by energy level (volume) or both at the same time,. experiment with the settings and see what works best for you.

2) I'll need more info for this one. What are the different types of video you're putting into the project. What are your project settings?

3) The Avid codecs should be installed on your machine. You can use quicktime pro (or any other quicktime app) to export Avid video.

4) make sure that both your audio tracks are selected (a1 and a2 buttons on the right column of buttons) they should then be locked together for any editing and effects you apply.

5) No. You have to use the audio mixer. I agree that Vegas has better audio capabilities. However Avid is not really designed to finish audio, it's purely an editing tool. They expect at this level that you would export the audio for a final mix in a dedicated audio editing program (there are several export options for audio). You have to use the effect tool to adjust opacity.

Don't get disheartened there's an initial frustration in trying out any new software. Keep plugging away and once the "penny drops" about the workflow, you will find out why the top end editors still use it.

I've been using Sony Vegas for quite some time now and I really really like it but unfortunately it seems that I have to know how to use an Avid if I want to get work in the professional world. Anyway, I'm on Media Composer and I've got some questions (and more will surely arise the more I deal with the program):

1) How do I get audio waveforms to show? Under 'Timeline settings' there is a thing called 'Show marked waveforms' but no matter whether its turned on or off, I'm seeing no waveforms. Vegas always showed me waveforms by default.
2) I imported a bunch of different video files into my bin and when I tried to open some of them in the source window, it said that clip frame rate does not match the project frame rate. Why does the program "care"? Sony Vegas never ever gave me such problem. But since it is a problem, any ideas on how I can fix it?
3) And speaking of importing video, does anybody know a good 'anything to Avid' converter which will allow me to make Avid readable files out of pretty much anything? Because for some reason it won't let me open a DIVX encoded .avi, even though I have all the latest codecs installed. Yet again, Vegas allowed me to drop pretty much anything I wanted onto its timeline and very very rarely gave me problems with it. Avid might be the most widespread in the professional world but it still has a bit of catching up to do in the field of flexibility.
4) Is there any way to link the two audio tracks of the same audio file together? Right now it gives me two tracks for every piece of audio that I drag onto the timeline so when I want to do some audio editing, it gets quite annoying to have to do double the work. Anybody know any good tips? (and I must say that Vegas is wonderful for audio editing)
5) Is there any way to adjust the audio gain right on the timeline, where I see the audio clip gain? Its so annoying to have to go into the audio mixer. I want to do it right on the timeline like Vegas allows me. And is there any way to adjust the video opacity this way? I think even Final Cut Pro, or at least in one video I saw, allowed you to do this.

Thanks for any help and more questions are sure to come.

Even though I started this thread, I did not feel it appropriate to state my own opinion in the root post, but rather to "reply" to the topic.

The VES/Delta workstation is an amazing piece of technology. It all came about when, a year ago, I had acquired an Academic copy of Media Composer at the Univ Film & Video Assoc annual conference (note that I am an Adjunct Professor, amongst other things) and found it frustrating to find a suitable workstation to run it on. Eventually, I contacted some colleagues who made their living taking care of studio installations. One thing led to another, and we all agreed that there had to be an easier way to edit with AVID products, so we created the ultimate editor's dream machine (for editors who were too busy editing to play computer geek).

Hence, the creation of the VES/Delta 1000. Designed literally from the ground up with all of the right stuff to enhance Media Composer and/or Liquid (Liquid is easier to satisfy from an engineering standpoint, but we wanted to cover both applications because you never know when a project might require the other; or a professor might have to teach both). It was designed as a complete, turnkey system including peripherals, so that there would be no issues over selecting the best monitors to interface with the Nvidia graphics card. All the software is installed at the factory by the engineers so that dumb editors like me will not muck things up.

In fact, we created the RED Disk kit which essentially is a special DVD that uploads, installs, and configures all of the System Drive software such as Windows, AVID or Liquid, utilities, etc. including licenses, authorizations, validations, updates, etc. perfectly onto a drive. Later on down the road, should the computer do what most computers do -- slow down due to corrupted files, lost drivers, internet infestations, or whatever -- all the end user has to do is to pop in the RED Disk kits and walk away for a little under an hour. When you return, it is like having a brand new computer again. Heck, I have waited more than an hour just for telephone Tech Support to call me back, let alone actually fix anything. This concept is truly an editor's security blanket.

Details are over at the website: www.VideoEditSystems.com

Before you all flame me for promoting a system that I have a stake in, please understand that it all came about to solve a problem for plain folk like me. I think the fact that we are taking a new approach to the PC, in essence, G5'ing it, and solving the software maintenance issues that have plagued end users in the past is a good enough reason to post info about it here.

And you are all more than welcome, in fact, encouraged, to talk about your own editing hardware solutions in this thread.
