I'm not sure, I installed from a DVD so I don't know how the software download from the site works. Sorry.

Only thing I can suggest is to check the documentation they sent you when you purchased the software, it may indeed be a separate download.

There is no Encore listed in my programs. I downloaded the trial version from Adobe's site and the decided to make the purchase. Would that have anything to do with it?

And yes the timeline is highlighted when I click export but it is still grayed out.

Encore is a separate program that is bundled with Premiere Pro, so they are only sold together. Assuming Encore is installed, and it should have been when you installed PP CS3. You can check to see if it is installed by checking under the start menu where your other programs list. If the option is grayed out;

Is your timeline selected when try to click on the option?

The bit rate you quoted (2.0) doesn't make sense to me. I suppose it could be 2.0 Mbps (megabytes per second) which is a lot of data per second. Checking a variety of my video files revealed that the AVI's are either 1 or 1.5 Mbps. So I think I would reduce the target rate to 1.0 Mbps and see if that makes a difference on the DVD's playback on a computer. It sounds good in theory, but I don't know any way other than trying it to see if it works in practice.

Good luck & let us know how it goes.

Well my computer is fast enough to play the DVD's I dont have anything like that running on my PC...I have it optimized for performance.. So if I export these videos at a lower maximum bit rate it might work?? The target bitrate that they were exported at was 2.0. I would really like to know if I can have this DVD just play as a DVD-rom specifically for the computer. This is a very large project as far as sizes goes and requires a dual Layer DVD

I'd suggest you try decreasing the bit rate of the MPG2 files you are writing to the DVD. Computers have to emulate the actions of a DVD player while maintaining the bit rate off the DVD. If your DVD doesn't have a lot of video on it, the usual default of DVD authoring software is to use the maximum bit rate for DVD players. But decreasing the default bit rate will let the computer keep up with the video output.

You might also want to check out how many background activities your computer is busy with. A friend of mine had the video playback on his computer grind to a halt. As it turned out, he'd installed an animated wallpaper which was monopolizing his processor cycles. So you may want to try playing the DVD on a faster computer to see how it works there.

Good luck with your project.

So I am authoring this DVD for an online education community who sells DVD's to aspiring VFX and Game artists....So a mass majority of these DVD's will be played on the Computer. I have everything ready to go and Encore gives me no errors.....All my video is exported at 640 X 480 to maintain proper aspect ratio of the tutorials on the DVD...the pixel aspects of everything including the Menus are square pixels..... When I play this project on the using any of the DVD player software on the computer I get very bad pixelation....is this because of the Burning process itself? The dvd plays good on the regular DVD player with the exception of the video getting cut off in the safe areas... What do I need to do to have these play at a high quality on the computer?? Has anyone else had this issue? All responses are greatly appreciated...

Well, this is a few weeks late, and I supose you have found the problem. However, for yourself and others following this thread I offer this approach for Adobe Encore:

Create your introductory video to the DVD. I often include the buttons as they will appear on the video. I allow 30 seconds worth of the buttons on the screen after the introductory sequence. Create your menu that looks exactly like the button sequence on the video. I use PhotoShop to create the button mechanics, hot areas, etc. Now, when you create the menu, only use the active buttons in the PhotoShop created menu. That is, show as visible only the (+) layers. Import the PhotoShop menu as a "menu".

Under the "Motion" tab of the menu properties box, set the introductory video along with the buttons on that video as the video source for the menu. Now, set the time where the buttons appear in your introductory video in the "Loop Point" field of the properties box. You may have to fiddle with the time a little bit.

However, the down side of this approach is that when anyone hits the menu button on the remote, they will start the video from the beginning of your introductory video. Thus, you will need a second menu with out the introductory video. This can be solved by making the "end action" of the introductory video with menu point to the beginning of the second menu.

Sheesh, sorry if this sounds confusing. But when you get it working it is great.

It all depends on what software you are using. The effect is pretty easy to accomplish in Sony DVD Architect. Unfortunately I have not made any instructional videos on that topic.

I'm no expert but it seems to me that what might work is importing the video intro and setting it as first play. Set the end action for the intro to point to the desired menu and then you're good to go.

Seems logical to me although I'm sure there are more elegant solutions.

I am having trouble with menu creation in Encore 2.0. My issue is that when I create the menu and preview it in Encore, it works just fine. However, once I burn the DVD onto a DVD and put it in my DVD player, some of the menu selections are skipped over. I have some working menus that I have no problems with. I even copied them and just replaced the information and it did not work. I created custom menus in Photoshop because I wanted some specific text effects. I have even tried making sure the numbering order is correct in the upper right hand corner.

Any ideas on this could be greatly appreciated!

I've found it works much better to import your clips into Encore as AVI files and let Encore transcode them. Encore can then better adjust the transcode to fit on your DVD.

Kkmac is certainly correct that Encore is a post production tool. It is designed to present and distribute finished programs. It is not an editing tool. You are just asking for problems if you try to edit a program with Encore.

When I got that error, it didn't look like the buttons were overlapping, but the button outlines were. The outlines appear when you click on a button with the selection tool. perhaps theis is the problem with your project. I will PM you an illustration, because this new fomat didn't allow me to "insert" an image...

Also...I don't think the flowchat will show which buttons are overlapping...you'll just have to click every button until you see which outlines are overlapping. I thought encore had a feature that would atomagically create red outlines when buttons were overlapping...I guess not...

I hope this helps...

A few test runs I tried have worked out well -but my first serious try is driving me up the wall. 'Check Project' keeps telling me : SUBMENU - Overlapping buttons! I cannot trace this 'fault'. The flowchart looks fine but what else can I do?

Any help might save my sanity! Thanks.

I tried mgeg, dolby, and pcm. i tried to up the audio bitrat and lower it. still no luck. any suggestions would be great.
Thanks, kkmac. I've discovered that my problem is one of the limitations of Encore 1.0. It's only possible to use "override" to return to a scene menu for the last scene on a time line. So each scene to be viewed via a scene selection sub-menu needs to be on a separate timeline. Newer versions have capabilities like playlists and chapter end actions which is what I need. Upgrade time. Jim

If you have a 15Gig m2v video, it must be around 8 hours since 2 hours of DVD video is around 4 Gig. If you can, try exporting (from Premiere) each seperate sequence as an avi file. Let Encore transcode the files. If you can export 1 big sequence you should be able to export a bunch of smaller ones.

Encore is a DVD authoring application. It was not intended (ever) to be used as an editing or production tool. Its a Post Production tool. Your video files are supposed to be ready for delivery by the time Encore sees them. Using Encore as an editor is only asking for problems. The biggest being the audio and video sync. Guaranteed to lose sync every time.

Honestly, its best to figure out why your having problems exporting from Premiere because Encore will introduce new problems. The problem your experiencing now is just the beginning if you can't solve your Premiere export issue.

I can't help you on that because I don't know what version of Premiere your using, and what your settings are.
