Of course I need to do research and take my particular requirements into account before making a decision. Reading Videomaker and this forum are part of that research. I'm not looking for a definitive answer in any one place. A mix of facts, recommendations and opinions are the input to the decision. I still contend that the face detection article doesn't tell me any more than a press release from the manufacturer. I don't need Videomaker for that and it's not doing its job if it doesn't offer more. The article's author has the camera--I don't. And I'm not going to buy it to research this particular feature.

As for lighting, there was another post on this forum from someone who stated clearly the kind of lighting needs he has (interviews) and that he has an entry-level budget. He got two kinds of responses. Someone posted a link to B&H lighting kit and said "that's what I'm about to buy,"and listed a few pros and cons. Another person posted a long rant about how he needs to set aside a solid week (but months would be better) and study everything about lighting in extreme depth and then maybe he will be in a position to make a decision.

The OP would be foolish to rush out and buy the B&H kit based on that one opinion, but it is a least a specific starting point for more investigation and discussion. And even if he did just buy it, it's probably not terrible and getting hands-on experience with something is better than endlessly reading about the subject. The suggestion that the OP do more research is useless. He is obviously already doing some research, which includes his post to the forum.

My point is that too many Videomaker articles are just as uninformative.

Good responses Rob. Interesting that a fight, er, uh discussion point(s) has been issued but no reply as of yet. Maybe it's been too soon.

As a career journalist it has been my experience (and opinion) that reporting facts is just that, limited to the knowledge and research capabilities and resources of the individual making the report. Statement of opinion, however, is an editorial and not to be confused with the former.

True, as the original post points out, it would be nice if somebody who has had direct hands on experience (not opinions derived from reading of manufacturer BS releases, paid reviews sponsored by the same, or parroting what has been heard over the various forum grapevines) would pipe in once in awhile and provide a "tell" on their "findings" as they apply to the expectations, needs and application of the writer/video producer.

Even that, however, isn't going to answer all of somebody elses questions regarding the same. Some questions simply HAVE to be answered via personal examination, hands on experience and individual research based on specific needs of the person seeking information.

So I went and read the About Face article you linked, and most of the questions you asked in this post are answered in this article.

how does it work?

Well, there's 2 or 3 paragraphs explaining how it works. Cameras with this feature implement algorithms so the camera can recognize faces.

Most face detection algorithms recognize not just one, but multiple faces. Usually they consider the face closest to the center the most important or primary face; they notice others behind it or on the periphery, but focus and image adjustments will follow the primary face. If the primary face leaves the frame, the software will choose a new primary face. Many of the current crop of cameras will pick five or more faces (if they're available).--A whole paragraph strait from the article.

If you wanted to know what algorithms are, then you're reading the wrong magazine dude. Mathematicians create algorithms, and no disrespect to Videomaker, but I don't think they could explain it to you and I don't think you'd understand anyway...

what effect does it have?

Well that's a no brainer. It allows the viewer to clearly see faces...

is it reliable?

Probably. It states in the beginning that Nikon started it and then others jumped on the band wagon. Why would others follow along if it wasn't working?

would I want this feature in my next camera?

Like I said in my earlier post, no one call tell you what you need. That's for you to decide. And if you can't decide, the article provides an example of when you may NOT want this feature:

"So far, all of the camcorders we've seen that include face detection also let you turn the feature off. Why would you want to do that? An artsy shot with flowers in focus and the subject holding them in soft focus is a good example of when you might want to turn this feature off."

--From the Article

See, they give you an example of what you may not want this feature. So if you think there will be a lot of times when you're going to want very shallow depth and the person in the shot will be out of focus, then maybe you don't need this feature...

Did you actually read this article or are you just judging harshly because you're unsatisfied...because you don't want to think, you just want people to tell you want to get...

I kinda could see your point until you got to this:

But basically they all just say, "think about what you need and choose your equipment appropriately". Useless! Instead, tell me what you personally would buy for $500 or $2000.

That's ignorant. YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU NEED. What someone else would buy with $500 or $2000 is useless information because they're not doing the same thing you are doing. If you have $2000 and you know you do a lot of 3 point lighting for interviews, you will spend that $2000 differently than someone who will be lighting large scenes....

We all make video because we like making video, but unfortunately sometimes you have to put the camera away and do some research, which isn't fun. No magazine will tell you what you need. It's impossible.

I've been a reader of Videomaker for a while and am constantly frustrated by it. The topics covered are good but too many of the articles leave me with an empty feeling. An example: the About Face! article. I've been curious about the face detection feature for some time. I want to know: how does it work? is it reliable? what effect does it have? would I want this feature in my next camera?

But basically the article just says: faces are important, lots of cameras have the feature, and if you want to know if it's useful you have to try it for yourself. That's useless! I knew all that before I read the article. The writer should give me his opinion. We're all adults (sort of) and will know that it is just an opinion and not the final definitive word on it. But tell me something. You know more about the topic than I do, tell me something I don't know.

Ditto for the basic instructional articles. I am looking to buy my first lighting kit. I feel like I've read a zillion articles in Videomaker about lighting. But basically they all just say, "think about what you need and choose your equipment appropriately". Useless! Instead, tell me what you personally would buy for $500 or $2000. Other knowledgeable people will disagree but that's fine. Start a <strike>fight</strike> discussion and let's get some real points of view being shared.

That would make the magazine much more useful. Don't be so timid!

I do agree with you. And your re-writes of the original blog post are very true.

And while I don't like a lot of the videos posted on Youtube because I think they are garbage (not because of they way they were filmed or the 7 deadly video-making sins), I have one thing to say to people with my opinion of the their content.

"If you don't like what is on YouTube, then don't watch it!" Those people have the right to post what they want.

Same thing goes to people who are up in arms against certain books, TV shows, Movies (at the theatre), and Porn.

"If you don't like it then don't look at it (or watch it)." It's as easy as that. Don't tell me what I'm allowed to look at or watch.

Thanks for bringing this blog post to our attentions. I was a music major in college. I had a professor of 20th century music. He asked us to analyze a song and I said it sounded like the sound track to a horror movie. Well let's just say that I got ripped a new one for that for the remainder of the semester.

At the end of the semester, I brought in an example of a horror movie soundtrack... and guess what? It was the exact same song. By the same composer.

What did he have to say to that? Not much.

Musical snobs... Video snobs... Culinary snobs... They're everywhere in every line of work. In the artistic field, engineering, blue collar, everywhere.

We just have to remember that this is America and we have the right to express ourselves in anyway we see fit, whether others like it or not.

Case in point in the link below: While I don't agree with it, they do have the right to do it in this country. And while I DO NOT agree with people who burn flags... In this country, you should have the right to do it.

Not bad at all, for a Swede writing in English. I commend you. The only other language I can communicate and write in is Texan, although I abandoned the former Republic to move to California, another prolific second language state.

What 's "Texan" you ask? Well, it utilizes a LOT of contractions such as ain't, ya'll. cain't and dunno - stuff like that. I try to avoid writing in a Southern drawl as well, but sometimes I cannot resist. :-)

Overall, not a poorly written response. Points made, and taken. It is important, however, when writing about, well writing, talking about spelling, punctuation, effort is taken to not include mistakes in your own. Typos are especially sneaky, are they not?

YT is yet another format, another avenue of expression, for the masses democratizing the process of, and for, self expression. Same for blogs. Et tu web sites. I have the option to not read or view what I do not like, or to comment upon that which I find unacceptable once it is presented for public consumption.

Your response is cute, but beyond that, pretty much as presumptuous as the source of your inspiration. Freedom of expression is a powerful intoxicant, huh?

LOL. Actually, I agree with the guy. I hate Youtube sometimes. The other day I got a comment on a video that I posted months ago. It is a montage of high school wrestling that I used for experimenting with Color, the new color correction program in Final Cut Studio 2. Some prick decided to leave a comment saying "I didn't know they allowed gay porn on youtube." Afterward, I check his videos thinking he must be on the level of George Lucas or something. Turns out the kid has NO skill. Everyone a critic, right?

On the other hand, I agree with you. I was reading Tom's blog and getting confused. I went to summer school for English after 11th grade, but I never wrote as poorly as that. Everyone's a critic, right?

This is a response to the blog post "Youtube is ruining video!" which was posted in the blog section of Videomaker yesterday. The original post was written by the signature tomskowronski and before you keep on reading this forum post, you should probably take a look at http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/.

I figured that, since my comment probably never will be moderated, I'll post my reply here to fire up the discussion.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, that was arrogant.

What if a journalist would say that blogs (and use your post as an example) is ruining the written word? Usage of clichés, simple typing mistakes such as double spaces or misuse of commas. Short sentences and paragraphs used only to get the viewer to not twirl away to another blog or site because the one he’s currently reading is too “boring”. One could say that blogs are making the art of writing into a joke.

Or if a web designer (or any graphic designer as a matter of fact) would say that blogs and poorly designed web sites are ruining the art of digital design. Poor typography, columns too narrow, not knowing when to save your graphics as gifs, jpegs or png’s, framing the content into something that is by definition unknown to man, functions in product not functioning properly and so on. One could say that poorly designed blogs and web sites are completely destroying the art of digital design.

So, Tom Skowronski, I’ve decided to retype your poorly written blog post not only one, but two times, focusing on the two groups mentioned above. Feel free to copy it and then paste it into whatever community you find fitting.

THE WRITTEN WORD

Alright I know, I get it. You can post your OWN content on Blogger! But that doesn’t mean that you should. There are always positives and negatives when it comes to any user generated written sites. Here are the positives, freedom of expression. That’s right, whether you want to tell off the girl who turned you down with a haiku. Or you feel like quoting all of Barney Stinson’s one liners from How I met your Mother, you have the right to express yourself! Should you? Sure you bet!

What’s the downside? The result is usually, people who own computers (or pen and paper, or maybe a typewriter) end up creating the content. Instead of people who know how to write, creating the content. This means poor sentences, misuse of punctuation and exclamation marks. These are perfect examples of what not to do while writing your next novel! Read five blog posts and see if you notice any of the seven deadly sins of web writing, I did. Go try, here are some to get you started:

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

There is no creativity, no flow and no talent. More importantly, these words are crap. Therefore, the art of the written word doesn’t exist on Blogger. Which, ironically enough is a web site geared around writing.

THE DESIGN

Alright I know, I get it. You can design your OWN pages with Dreamweaver and publish it online! But that doesn’t mean that you should. There are always positives and negatives when it comes to any user designed site. Here are the positives, freedom of expression. That’s right, whether you want to tell off the girl who turned you down with a picture of her nosehairs sticking out. Or you feel like showing photos of yourself in underpants with a print from the poster from Jaws, you have the right to express yourself! Should you? Sure you bet!

What’s the downside? The result is usually, people who own computers end up creating the content. Instead of people who know how to use photoshop, write css, code html and various dynamic script languages, creating the content. This means stretched and poorly compressed images, no color harmonies, poor typography and repeated background patterns used not only as a column background, but throughout the entirety of the site. These are perfect examples of what not to do in digital design! Watch five websites and see if you notice any of the seven deadly sins of web design, I did. Go try, here are some to get you started:

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

There is no creativity, no design and no talent. More importantly, these sites lack style and format. Therefore, the art of digital designn doesn’t exist on MySpace (for instance). Which, ironically enough is a web site geared around creating web content and design.

This could go on for a while. What about photographers flaming Flickr or musicians raising hell about MySpace or Virb? The bottom line is that with the good, you also have to put up with the bad. YouTube is a fantastic way to give people the opportunity to show of their work to the entire world, give them the opportunity to express themself and try out different techniques with instant feedback from people who are not afraid to speak their minds. Sure, the compression can at times be hard on your eyes, the physical size of the movies are a bit small and the content can at times be really, REALLY bad.

But you know what?

You don’t have to watch it.

This start-up is definitely for those, who are engaged in self video production. Their content base counts hundreds of pretty interesting and well-designed shows (I've checked carefully)) They are trying to accumulate all the best from infamous filmmakers and then entertain us -I've never seen NONE of their animation collection before. You may also try - I'm waiting for your impressions.

If there's a place where the video logically ends before 5:00:00;02, I generally cut out the credits and accept the video into the contest. If you get your video to us before the last-minute rush, I'll tell you if it's too long so you can submit a different cut. (This is the added incentive for submitting early.)
One thing I saw that kept a submission out: a potential contestant rolled credits at the 5 minute mark when there was still action and dialog unfolding, and the video didn't actually fade to black for another two minutes.
We look forward to seeing everyone's entries!

Bars aren't required, nor is a slate or excessive amounts of black. (They would get lopped off any entry that had them upon being imported into our system anyway.) We just wanted to give some examples where the total amount of time consumed on a tape (in particular) could be longer than 5 minutes. However, the body of the video MUST be 5 minutes or less once the program begins.

Most of the entries we've been getting this year are on DVD-Video, all of which seem to get right into the program, though I have done some cut-edits on a few with excessive amounts of black. More on that later (in the blog).

But I don't see anywhere about required colorbars or black or title card. What is required (or recommended) at the start of an entry for the contest?
Thank you John,

My motivation for seeking out the DVDs was because of the lack of training opportunitites for video enthusiasts in the Victoria/Vancouver B.C. area. Sure, there are film schools with year long courses---and Videomaker even brought its three day workshop to Seattle last year "Basics of Video Production" I believe...but I was unable to free up my schedule to attend. Darn..!

So Videomaker magazine, books and DVDs are my only companions (cue the violin) on my journey to video enlightenment...<grin> and I'd like some expert help from Videomaker staff while choosing my DVD companions...!! So keep those reviews coming and try to shoe-horn one or two more into the "media reviews" when they come out.

Michael

p.s. will add any more DVDs, that I discover, to the list above...

Hey thanks, that's a great list of resources for people here.

Actually in the 2008 calendar for the magazine we are including "media reviews" every third month. These are instructional DVD's and Books. Only 4 times a year, which might not be exactly what you were hoping for, but space in the magazine is getting more and more precious every year. Postage hikes, paper costs etc.

On the web however.....

Thanks again for your list,
Ok, I'm not a big fan of "Buyer's Guides", but I do recognize that they can act as a nice summary of what is available and who it is available from...so I have a suggestion for a Videomaker's Buyer's Guide---its something that I have not found in any other location, be it web or print---a guide to instructional DVDs.

Yes, I'm aware that Videomaker has a wonderful series of DVDs (there is an ad sitting at the top of the web page as I type this posting), but there are a whole lot more out there and they offer variations on techniques that I think the readers of Videomaker magazine should consider when looking to purchase. For example, Videomaker's "Advanced Shooting" is an excellent DVD. But videographers should consider and weigh the benefits of Elite Video's "Advanced Broadcast Camera Techniques", the entertaining and educational two-DVD set narrated by John Cooksey. And there are more...

In fact here is what I have uncovered (not in any particular order) in a few hours of searching, but I'm sure there are more:

www.dvuser.co.uk/ Lighting for Digital Video

www.videomaker.com/ Light it Right
And finally, I'd like Videomaker to go beyond the 'buyer's guide', and see more 'hands on' reviews of these instructional DVDs, not just the 'bare facts' contained in a buyer's guide (e.g. 2 DVD set, 2hr 30 mins running time, produced 2006), but also a professional opinion on the content and method of teaching the content...
