Hey Everyone,

We’re going into Pre-Production on the first TV series of Pro Juice and
we need your help. We might be based in Melbourne but we’re looking to
the world for both content and broadcasters. Check out below how you
can be involved.

Animators/Designers/Editors

We’re looking for 12 animated stings to use throughout the series. What
are stings? Well they can be anything you like. But basically they’re
short (2-7 second) animations that we can use between segments to add
some dynamism to the show and to show off the creative work of all you
'guerrilla' producers out there. We don’t mind if its 2D, 3D, stop
motion or cut-out animation. So long as its original, fresh and very
cool.

Music Videos

We’re on the lookout for 6 music videos to feature in the series. So if
you’ve produced/directed/edited/animated a great music video lately, we
want to see it. We want videos with great stories, striking visual
effects, simple ideas or one-shot wonders.

Short Films / Experimental Works

We’re also on the lookout for 6 short films or experimental videos to
feature in the series. So if you’ve produced/directed/edited/animated a
great video lately, we want to see it. We want videos with great
stories, striking visual effects, simple ideas or one-shot wonders…

XTR-91 on "Low light performane of HD camcorders shooting in SD?"

The biggest factor as far as light performance goes is the camcorder's amount and size of sensors. An HD camcorder with a 1/4" CMOS sensor will almost definitely retain more light than a 1/6" CCD on a standard definition camcorder. SD camcorders will generally retain more light, as each pixel is more highly exposed.

When shooting SD with a HD camcorder are the pixels in someway combined so that the light received by each one is added together to produce more light reception by the lesser amount of combined pixels?

Good questions. I've actually thought of this myself, but from my own knowledge base, it seems that every camcorder records the amount of pixels which its sensor is destined. SD video shot on an HD camcorder will most likely be recorded with the number of lines given and then "down-convert" to an SD resolution. From what I've heard about the Canon HV30, it's a High-definition camcorder that performs virtually the same with light in both HD and SD modes.

I know that HD camcorders in general require more light than comparable SD camcorders, due to the light being divided up among many more pixels, but what about HD camcorders when shooting in SD mode?

When shooting SD with a HD camcorder are the pixels in someway combined so that the light received by each one is added together to produce more light reception by the lesser amount of combined pixels?

Or when shooting SD are the extra pixels in essence thrown away, so regarding light levels/exposure you get the same as you would shooting HD?

I hope that isn't phrased to idiotically, but to help I'll explain why I'm asking. I shoot live rock shows, so low-light performance is very important. Currently we shoot with SD camcorders, which is fine since 90% of what we produce is for online distribution only. But HD is becoming more and more the norm, and we'd like to produce more content with a high enough quality for DVD distribution or even just higher quality online distribution.

So I'm looking into getting HD camcorders, but at least for times when I know that HD is not required I'm wondering if I can shoot with them in SD mode and get the improved low-light performance that you do from SD cameras?

Does anything else play on your PC speakers? This could possibly be a sound processing problem due to the electrical specs (e.g. impedance) of your computer's speakers. Your PC's speakers may also have been damaged, having an internal problem of their own.

Odds are very few if any folks in these forums have done an AFX project on the scale you're working on. I've worked with AFX for a few years now and never pulled down numbers like you're talking about. However, Andy does that kind of stuff everyday. Info's where you find it and you'll find a lot of VM forum participants who if they can't answer your question directly, will point you to someone who can.

When you get an answer, feel free to update this post. I wouldn't mind knowing the answer myself.

If you're wandting to uploading analog video to PC digitally then you need a 1394 analog to DV converter. Grass Valley makes one called the ADVC-55. I've put the link in from B&H for you to see. Long as you have a workable firewire input on your PC/Mac, then you can download video via unbalanced RCA or S-Video plugs.

Yeah, that sounds like you didn't export your video clips out with .WAV audio files. If the PC using Media Player either doesn't have AIFF selected as playable or it doesn't have that audio codec then you get nada. If you exported your clip in QT with AIFF files and the PC has QT player on it, it should play uncompressed audio with no prob. BTW, what video format an audio format did you export out to?

Smaller? Yes. Cheaper? Yes. But comparable in features, accessories and capabilities? Absolutely uh-uh!

If you're looking for smaller and cheaper with somewhat similar capabilities, then you're looking at a GL1-2. But there's not a camera that has the same level of controls, multiple lenses and 'trick out' potential than the XL1s. You can take an off the shelf XL1s from a barely prosumer 'buzzsaw' to a balanced broadcast/cinematic rig with the accessories available just from canon alone! Feature films like '28 Days Later' were shot with the XL1s.

The XL1s is a full 3CCD camera, with full control over its audio, image and it's small. Even my company's fully tricked out rig is still smaller than our JVC proHD rigs. The only real 'smaller and cheaper' option would be the Canon EOS 7D. However, to properly trick that camera out to a fully capable video camera, the accessories needed (shoulder mount, viewfinder, etc.) will run about as much if not more than tricking out an XL1s. But if you're thinking you'll find a similar prosumer video camera with the same capabilities you already have, good luck with that.

Ok. What is your connection to your camera? Firewire-USB-Other?

If it is taking this long to find new media on every start/stop your only solution may be to do the tedious task of manually logging every clip(tedious if you are lazy like me).

Start the capture now, let it go for a few seconds, then roll the tape.

Also, if this persists, try and remember to shoot that way. Always give yourself about 5 -10 sec handles on each shot if possible.

Sorry I cant be more help, out of ideas without being able to see it in action.

There are a few solutions, but I have not had direct experience with them so I will not stray you to one product over another.

But, I will say, depending on your budget go for the best quality(read a lot of reviews). Saving a few hundred bucks is not worth the quality in wireless mics(speaking from experience)

Also, depending on your setup you will need to make some choices. There are systems that include a base transmitter and two/four wireless mics. The problem is, most of these transmitters have to be powered by an outlet(not batteries). So if you plan on moving your camera a lot or are short on space and like to move your camera a lot you will have to manage the power cord to the transmitter. If you do find one that is powered by an internal battery you will have to fork up some cash.

Pay attention to the specs on the transmitter. Make sure it has a full spectrum of available frequencies. A life saver is also have a "scan" function. This scans to the "cleanest" frequency in your area.

Good luck, and let us know what you find!

If in Premiere CS4 you right click a clip and select "Replace with After Effects Composition" and it gives you the error "could not connect to after effects," close premiere and after effects, open your task manager and kill all the processes related to adobe:
dynamiclinkmanager.exe
ImporterProcessServer.exe
processcoordinationserver.exe

Hi there, I've been charged with finding and renting a 2nd video camera for a coming production that I am involved in helping out on - our main camera is a JVC GY HD111e and we're looking for a second camera that will be cheap but will be able to be shoulder-mounted & record in HD to miniDV's. I have sent away a few emails to some companies I found in the Yellow Pages and am awaiting a list back from these companies with the available cameras but I'm really just asking for some real-world advice here.

I'm based in the UK and have never rented any video equipment, I would just love some advice or for anyone to share their experiences of renting a camera as I would like to know a little and not be completely ripped off! Have you ever rented and how much did it cost? Did you find any way to squeeze more value out of the rental? Any hints, tips and information would be greatly appreciated. =)

I have used a VX2000 for many years. It is a great camera. I have two new FX1000 cameras and yes they are better, but if your final product is DVD it is hard to beat the VX2000. Some things I love about the VX2000, excellent auto focus even on moving subjects and low light. Line in/ Mic in switch. Excellent auto control of audio levels. Great battery life. Great iris/gain control operation. Easy to find buttons (in the dark). I did seriously think of buying up a couple more new ones before they disappeared, but I decided to go with the FX1000 to kind of "future proof" my business.

I think you can do an outstanding job with some pretty inexpensive video cameras; however, if this is going to be a hobby/business that you intend to grow I suggest you spend a little more on your camera than you need. People who don't know anything about what you are doing will make judgements based upon your cameras. An expensive camera draws attention and potential clients. People will give your tripods a wide berth if they see a professional camera on it. I also think you need two cameras. I've always shot with at least two. One gives me the long shot and my safety, then I'm free with my second camera to go for the "money shot". Low light performance is very important. Some churches are poorly lit for video and they may be going by candlelight. Reception venues can be worse. Wireless? I've been on a lot of movie sets and they spend a ton on wireless, but they still don't trust them so they back them up with wired mics. I have a wireless mic. I've used it a few times. I don't trust it. Do you know what an Zoom H4 unit is? They are fantastic. You can use them as they are or add a shot gun to them. Basically you only need it for the vows anyways. I hope I didn't scare you off. I know you're going to have a great time. Realize that you probably can't avoid making a few hardware mistakes, I've made my share.
