I'm going to buy the Canon Vixia hf 200, is this a good camera? My professors at my university recommended it. I only have a $1,000 budget, and I really want to make independent films. Will this camera do the job? Will footage professional like the movies? I plan to to buy a adapter so I can use my shot gun mic through my xlr cable. Also what kind of tripod should I purchase? Again my budget is limited. If anybody has this camera, please help me to answer these question.

I just procured a ZR 960 and have an external microphone plugged into the mic jack. I want to monitor the audio using the AV out, but I get lots of buzzing as the camera doesn't know that I want stereo audio. I can't find the option in the menu to toggle the sound to stereo, although the option exists in other Canon camcorders. Any recommendations?

Hi. I was seeing HDV camera prices and found that XH-A1s from Canon is $3400 at BH
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/589903-REG/Canon_1191B001_XH_A1_3CCD_HDV_Camcorder.html

and the new Sony Z5 is $4200

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/582905-REG/Sony_HVR_Z5U_HVR_Z5U_Professional_HDV_Camcorder.html

Sony has always had a higher price but $800 seems a lot to me. As far as I understand, both cameras are very similar, despite the Canon being older. May be I am missing something.

any suggestions on camcorders (not a webcam!) in the 500$ and less range for webcasting ?

webcams are only good when sitting right in front like at your computer so it has to be a camcorder.

since it will be for webcasting live music I need...

a firewire connection (better than USB)
1/8" audio input (xlr the best but probably not to be found on a 500$ cam!)

Hello

My XL2 won't eject the tape, and this is the second or third time this has happened to me. The window pops open after sliding the eject lever, but no movement with the tape casing. Before I'd just take out the battery and put it back in. That seemed to work. Now I've tried anything and everything. But it won't budge. About two weeks ago I shot with a Canon XH-A1, and it did the same thing. I've searched the net regarding this issue, but haven't come across any helpful info.

Anyone have this problem before, or know the solution?

Hi

Could anyone possibally tell me the size of the lens on a Canon Zr500?

Its not listed on the manual and aparently Canon tech support doesnt know either. I found that out after 20 min on hold.

I have Raynox wide angle lense that I was using for all my home camcorders. The Raynox comes with a bunch of adapter rings but none will fit the ZR500.

the ZR500 lens measures 12mm across but I need to know what the technical size is to try to find a matching adapter.

the camcorder does have threads so something must fit.

thanks

Hi, I've hooked up my HV10 to my Mac running iMovie HD using Firewire to do some
time lapse videos. The only hassle I've come across is the need for a tape to be in
the camera or I get the "Camera No Tape" message. It works fine if you have a tape
in the camera but it's stuck in the "Rec Pause" mode and I assume it won't stay in that mode
for very long without shutting itself off or wearing out the motor.
You can fool iMovie for some reason by putting a tape in and then removing it, but you
can't make any settings changes anywhere or you lose the image and get the "Camera No Tape"
again.
Seems like there must be some way or mode I can set to use the camera for this purpose
without a tape in it?

Thanks,

I've noticed that when I replay the tape I shot through the camera (Canon GL1) it's not that uncommon to find that the images are broken up, sometimes there are alternate black bars across the images. Also, it's asked me to remove tape without any apparent reason. It's happened a few times. I'm wondering what's going on.

I just purchased about a month ago a Canon HF200 Vixia and I have to say its a wonderful camera, but when in movie mode I can't seem to hear anything out of my
headphones while recording. It works great in dual shot and photo modes, but just not
doing something wrong or is this one of Canons flaws I may have found.

Hi,

I'm shopping for a quality camcorder, but consumer level. Since the tape is seeming to go away, i'm interested in hard drive models like the CANON HFS100.

Here is my question. When I transfert the files to my computer, will each clip be stored independently? I just came back from vacation with 3 tapes--so a lot of clips, but captured the tape in a few clips. Aving millions of clip would be a lot much longer to edit.(I edit with Final Cut Express 4) If there is not a alternative to this, could the HV40 do the job instead?

Thanks in advance for all your great ideas,

Hey all,

I'm looking for a camcorder for my business. My business will be focused mainly on producing real estate video tours where most people will see these videos on the web. At the same time, I might want to enter the corporate market sooner or later producing broadcast-quality commercials. My main question is if the Canon HF S100 with 900 horizontal lines of resolution which is on par to a professional broadcast camera, according to Videomaker, could this camera produce low-budget commercials? Because right now I'm set on either the HV30, which is $300-$400 cheaper than the HF S100, or the HF S100, which in my mind would be able to do low-budget commercials where the HV30 could not. And not only is the HV30 alot cheaper, but I would have to spend more $ on memory cards and new editing software if I went with the HF S100 since I have Adobe Premiere CS3. Any advice or help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hey everyone, it's been a while out of the film business. I have been asked to film a wedding for someone, the last time I filmed one was back in 2005. I have a canon XL2 and GL1. I use the XL2 as a main camera and the GL1 as a B camera for wide shots.

The fact is that it is hard to match the two together, and with the age of the GL1 I'm thinking it's time for another camera.

So here is my question, do you think i should purchase a used GL2, would it match better? or should I go for another XL2, the problem here is that I may only be doing this one wedding, so I don't know if it is worth upgrading to HD.

What do you all think?

Thanks for all of your help

I find it incredible that Canon's WD 85h wide converter has no filter thread at the front of the lens! This lens costs hundreds of either US dollers or in my case since I am in the UK arpox £240-260. Here is the message I sent to Canon UK:

Dear Sir, I have read a review of the WD-58H Wide-converter for my XM2 and the person said the WD-58H Wide-converter has no filter thread in which to screw a filter on the WD-58H Wide-converter. Is this true? I need to be able put a filter on if only to protect the lens.

Here is Canon's response:

Dear Customer,

As far as we are aware there is no front filter thread on the WD-58H.

Has anyone got this converter? If so what are there veiws and opinions?

Regards Steve

Hello Everyone-

Not to beat the proverbial dead horse with yet another question about camera advice, but.....!! I have an XL2 (love it), and now need a second camera. I'm wondering if there's an issue with staying with the same manufacturer (Canon) for picture continuity. I'm looking to go HD, been looking at the XH-A1s.

Secondly, I'm a bit confused about the 1080p vs. 1080i, and what is a true HD quality video. Obviously I'd like the best quality for the money, and I don't mind spending a bit extra for it.

Any input greatly appreciated.

Howdy! I just found this forum - looks interesting! The forums I'm normally on are alot busier than this, but it isn't about Video making either!

Ok - so I have a background in computers, and I have done alot of video editing (Vegas), and I produce memorial DVD's for local funeral homes, but now I'm looking to buy one, maybe two, cameras so I can do some of my own footage, and maybe shoot some new suff! There are some interviews that I would like to take of well known people in my area that are reaching the age of retirement.

I'm trying to decide if I should go with an HD or not worry about it since this isn't going to be anything that I'm going to be producing to sell at Walmart or anything LOL!!

The camera I'm looking at right now is a Conon XL1S and an XL2 - I don't believe that either of these are HD (right?), but what I do like is that I can use wireless mic's so I can pick up the sound better. I'm looking for a good picture as well as I don't want it to be grainy -

Any suggestions? - my budget isn't very large as I'm in my early 20's and I'm kindof in-between jobs at the time. I co-own my own website business but that is slow right now.

Thanks!

HI

I recently purchased a Canon HV40 and a matching Manfrotto tripod. While I am very happy with both products, I found that I could not change the battery while the camcorder was on the tripod - the slide plate on the tripod head is too long. I have to take the camcorder off, and remove the slide plate before I can replace the battery.
Does anyone have a solution? Is there a shorter slideplate or a spacer of some kind?

Thanks
Heidi

Hello all.B&H is selling a refurbished Canon XH-A1 for $2700.They emailed me that it was used for testing, etc.and sent back to Canon and has been refurbished to factory conditions. It has a 90 day warranty.Being that the price is within my budget, this will be my first camcorder, and videography is my hobby,do you guys think that this is a good deal as opposed to waiting and buying a lot more expensive camcorder?Thank you.

Here are my observations. I paused during play to see
individual frames.

Play in Premier showed single image frames for both 30p and 60i clips.

A DVD
made directly from Premier showed single image frames for the 30p clip and
split image frames for the 60i. clip when played using Windows Media
Player.

Video
exported in MP2-1920x1080i format showed single sharp images for 30p
single frames and split images for 60i. This video clip shot at 30p was
the clearest of all during play back.
