Basically ive got a panasonic hdc sd100 and when i put my hd footage on to my PC using the software it came with, panasonic hd writer, the quality is brilliant. But i can't edit this footage with adobe premiere pro cs3 or pinnacle studio 11 because i need to save it as an mpeg2 file first. But when i save it as a mepg2 file the quality is rubbish compared to what it looked like on the hd writer software. Plus it only gives me the option on the software to save it as a mpeg2 file.

Im getting really annoyed because the picture quality is fantastic when it is on the camcorder and the hd writer but when i edit it after ive saved it as a mpeg2 file(which is the only option on the hd writer), the quality is quite frankly crap.

Just wondering how i can get the footage off of my hd camera and edit it in the best possible quality, i want it to look like the footage on the camera, is this possible?!Do you have to save the footage in a different file format and how do you do this. Im just getting in to filming and am a bit thick on things like this as you can probably tell. please speek terms i can understand, cheers

Hi

I am new to video editing , and a bit confused already .

I bought a avchd camcorder canon hf 200 , but my computer is to slow to edit , will buy a new computer later on , but I know now that it needs to be a fast one , so need to safe some money first

meanwhile I need still to work with what I have , so I guess the only solution is to convert the files

My questions are : which files are best to use without loosing quality , and which program to use to convert them

for computer , will any quad core do the job , or does it need to be the i7, for non professional use

thanks already William

famering on "An Alternative to ACDSEE on H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2 video browsing and managing?"

Today, I was cleaning up files on an old hard disk. In it, I met again many softwares I used to be using during last decade. ACDSEE, PHOTOSHOP, ULTRA EDITOR and many others, some of them are still my favorite tools today.

Watch the Windows Vista I am using now, what a similar looking between the explorer and the old ACDSEE classic. The so called thumbnail-view layout, which I first saw in ACDSEE classic, is nowadays a most common user interface standard.

Thumbnail-view is not the only strong point that ACDSEE holds.
ACDSEE is still the best when the image browsing speed is measured. That's why I am still using ACDSEE as my picture browser, although the Windows now can do it natively(but slowly). This shows, there is always a chance to survive for an unique technology, like the image browsing speed of ACDSEE.

On the contrary, when we turn to the speed of video browsing, ACDSEE falls into the common category of DirectShow filter based applications. ACDSEE does not decode video itself, so its video browsing speed is limited by the DirectShow.

This gave an opportunity to the video manager I am using now, the Smart Mate for DV and DVB.

Based on special video technology from FameRing, Smart Mate for DV and DVB is 20~30 times faster than DirectShow based softwares when browsing and taking thumbs of movies.

I have a Hauppauge HD PVR DVB Box with a tuner installed on PC. I've recorded about several hundreds of H.264/AVCHD movies on my hard disk. They are .ts files, aka transport stream. Every now and then, I need to organize them, search them, bookmark them, share them with my friends. Just like what I did to my Jpeg photos. Further more, I want to edit the movies, like cutting commercials out of them, this leads to the most valuable part of Smart Mate for DV and DVB. It has the world's first H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2 frame accurate cutter without re-encoding.

Smart Mate for DV and DVB not only supports frame accurate cutting on H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2, but also does it in a fastest way. It only re-encodes the gop on start point and end point, middle part of movie remains untouched. This gives the highest speed cutting while reserving highest video quality. So called, "Smart Cut".

If anyone else needs an easy but professional management solution for H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2 movies from Satellite video receiver, DVB HD PVR, DV Camcorder, or INTERNET, the Smart Mate for DV and DVB is the software you must have. FameRing also has video manager for all popular formats, called MovieShop, I was only using the version customized for H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2.

Come back to the ACDSEE, it will always be my image browsing tool, but not for the video browsing and managing.

To me, the Smart Mate for DV and DVB is an alternative to ACDSEE on video files. That is why we like competition, which gives us more and more better softwares.

May be some time later, Windows will be able to browse H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2 .ts movies natively(cuts frame accurately? I do not think so), like the thumb-nail view it learned from ACDSEE. But it will never be the only software left, because the unique technology always survives, as it is unique. The customers will always have alternative and better choices.

Is buying "HD" tape (MiniDV) necessary to shoot HD video? I never have, and shoot 720p. Occaisionally a client will have a problem, but that's the exception to the rule. If HD tap isn't necessary, what are the advantages? if necessary, why?

There are many different codecs/compression formats and options for HD, so I'm hoping you can give me your input on the best/most universally compatible format for distribution of HD clips on data DVD.

I am going to be shipping 20 HD clips (about 15 seconds or so each) to hundreds of people, all on a variety of editing systems. So I need to pick a good intermediary codec that is very compatible with most systems, maintains high quality, and balances a file size that isn't too out of control.

Source of footage: Canon XH-A1 HDV. I will be exporting to 1920x1080 60i resolution, and here are my ideas/options as I see them:

1) Photo-JPEG Quicktime files. Seems to be compatible with almost all systems and maintains high quality, but the file sizes can get large. Also, deciding what quality level to use (I currently go with 95%/best) is tough. What is optimal for HDV?

2) H.264 Quicktime files. Thoughts? Seems to be a great codec for maintaining quality and smaller file size than Photo-JPEG, but how universally compatible is it?

3) Something different than the two above that I haven't thought of. Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks, Joel

Need advice on AVC-HD. With the issues of AVC-HD and how it requires a monster computer to edit what is the advantages or disadvantages of using MainConcept's AVC-HD to DVCPRO transcoder to convert the codec for easier editing? Panasconic offers this trancoder from it's professional video website. I've used it in the past due to Premiere CS3 not accepting AVC-HD files. I now have upgraded to CS4 so this is not an issue. Just wondering if there's an advantage or disadvantage to converting the codec to DVCPRO. AVC-HD does push my computer pretty hard.

Hello, I want to buy a camcorder to make student films and short home made films. I'm thinking of buying the Sony XR500V (Hard drive + memory disc optional) and the Panasonic TM300 (memory stick).

I know each camera has its adventages and flaws;
The Panasonic has 24p mode, manual Iris which the sony DOES NOT.
But on the other hand some say that the sony beats the Panaonic in quality, friendly to use etc. And also that the Panasonic doesn't work well throughout time (is this true?)

I know that the Sony Vegas tries to create 24p mode and I've seen on some youtube clips that the exposure keeps changing when they did this mode - at least I hope that it's because of that mode.
Is the 24p mode so important that it'd be a deciding factor?

In your expirience which is better, more friendly to use, better quality, sharpness, better in low light.
In other words, if you were in my shoes which one would you get?

PLEASE HELP ME ASAP - I don't have much time since my sister is in New York this week (where it's much cheaper).

Hello, I would like to buy myself a high definition video camera in the
near future and have been looking at a few of the cheaper (costing less
than $800) ones around the web.

The main reason I want to get myself one is to shoot wildlife videos
and of all this beautiful scenery around here along the coast of
Georgia. Most of the cameras I've been looking at have very weak
optical zooms of 10X - 12X. I certainly want/need a much bigger zoom to
be able to zoom in close to the wildlife without spooking them.

Of course, I certainly want a video camera that takes great video, but
here are my most important feature needs:

Great low-light recording

true widescreen recording ability

long optical zoom of at least 20X power (unless I can get a quality add-on lens to extend a lower optical zoom).

I'm a "BIG DUMMY" when it comes to video cameras and have a few
questions for anyone who don't mind answering them. Any help or camera
recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Remember, my budget will
be no more than $800 dollars!

Thank you very much and I really do appreciate your time.

1. First of all, which High Definition format would you recommend and why?

2. When recording in 24p or 30p is sound captured along with the video? If so, is the sound in sync with it?

3. Is the camera loud when recording in the 24p or 30p modes?

4. Can high definition video be shot on regular MiniDV tapes or must I use an HDV tape? Does it really matter?

5. How will adding a lens (wide angle or telephoto) affect recording in high definition?

6. Can I still record in widescreen mode if I use an add-on lens attached to my video camera?

7. Will 24p or 30p work at the longest telephoto end of the lens?

8. Will 24p or 30p work with a wide angle or telephoto add-on lens?

9. Will 24p or 30p work well in low-light situations?

10. Can I burn my hi-def video to regular DVD's? If so will the
video still be hi-def or will it be down converted to standard
definition?

11. Any camcorder suggestions?

Hi all, thanks for the awesome forums, alot of information here and i hope to make good use of it. I am completely new to videography ect. and will certainly appreciate and help and time you offer. I am looking to buy my first camcorder and really have no where to start.

I do a lot of driving and plan on shooting from my dash to start off with and go from there. Heres what i think i want or need.

-Great low light recording

-Durability?

-Image stabalization

-AC/DC capable(standard)

-HD?

Ok here are my questions and concerns, please keep in mind I intend for my first camcorder to cost under $1000, $800 preferably

1. Do i need to worry about durability, will one camcorder hold better than another?

2. Do i really need HD? I want high quality recordings and know HD is the way to go but dont really know what the other options are out there. Am I aiming for something that i do not need to spend the money on?

3. Assuming I do go HD I am a little confused about the recording medium. From what I see i can go for tapes, flash, hard drive, or sd cards. I have a basic understanding of how sd and hard drives work but do not understand flash or tapes. Whats going to be the most simple route here? I am looking for low maintence, safe recordings.

4. For the time being I will be using a pc for any editing, Do i need to shop for specific camcorders and software because of my pc?

5. Have i missed anything? Anyhitng I should be looking for, concerned about or should know about my first buy?

Heres what my brief research has pointed my towards

I have a friend with a Core2Duo 2.26. He wants to get an AVCHD camera (Canon HF200). I think he uses Premiere.

If he converts the AVCHD files to .avi, can he edit this in Premiere with a Core2Duo at 2.26GHz? Or does he still need a CoreDuo Quad, in order to avoid stuttering during playback?

Over this past summer I worked for a group of producers who shot an independent film on a low budget (a little less than $1,000,000). They shot on high definition, full 1080p quality. Right now I'm assisting one of the producers in his attempts to sell the film for distribution. I'm also editing together the EPK for the project.

A little while ago we held a screening of the finished film at a large venue for cast/crew/friends/distributors, and we got a lot of comments about how the film looked flat and lifeless. And we were showing it on a fully calibrated deck straight off an HDCAM SR tape. A few people even said it looked like a movie shot for a lot less than what we spent. Up until now we have been blaming the movie's bad look on the camera and lighting crew and on the color correction. However, recently I took possession of a hard drive containing a copy of the finished, fully rendered Quicktime file from which the SR tape was made, full 5.1 mix and everything. I've been using it to source clips for the EPK.

To some extent the "flat" look is definitely the fault of the DP and coloring, as the sets were definitely overlit and the colorist definitely didn't have enough time to do much more than a first pass. But after learning more about the codec used for the file (ProRes 422) and after examining this file itself I'm starting to wonder whether
overcompression is part of the problem with the movie's visual
appearance.

The file has a running time of almost 104 minutes. My understanding of ProRes is that a "regular" quality 1080p movie would be encoded at 145mbs, and a "high" quality movie would be 220mbs. By my calculations that would mean that, had the finished file been rendered at those bit rates, its final size would have come out around either 904 GBs or 1.37 TBs, respectively.

The actual size of the finished file that I've got? A measly 137 GBs. Which would mean the bitrate would be more like 22mbs.

Are my calculations accurate, or am I way off here? I've never worked with ProRes, so can anyone tell me more about the usual bitrates that finished files are encoded in? Are lower bit rates than those I've mentioned permissible? Are my suspicions well founded or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

Hi all,

Just trying to make the leap into HD with two PMW-EX1's. I'd like
to use Prem (last time I used it was nearly 10 years ago with Prem 6.5
- having been using Edius since then) Pro. I'm a little confused
though. I want to build my own system, but I think it would be wise to
get some user advice on what sort of GPU would be best and what sort of
editing hardware I should use. I was looking at the Matrox RT.X2. I
would be basically editing XDCAM 1080p or 1080i most of the time. I
would be using a little AE but nothing very heavy. What kind of GPU
would be best?

Any help and advice GREATLY appreciated!!

alright, this sounds retarded and everything. and a standart noob question.
in fact i have been editing alot. not only film editing also alot of photoshop, flash, after effects and alot more. now me and my brother have some plans build up. but it also includes a camera from a budget around 10.000 euro.

The kind of work we want to do with the camera is:

-Weddings
-events
-interviews
-Movies(with actors etc)

i cant really come up with subjects while i'm typing this hehe,
but i also want to make my own stuff, as in funny skits, spoofs, and my own scripts.

if someone could paste some kind of information where to do what, and to check up what kind of
camera's, and tell me what is what. i'l appreciate it.

Good morning,
I'm an amateur filmmaker. I switched to a Sony V1U camera, filming 20 hours in HDV, 30p this summer and having lots, lots of stills. I need to upgrade my PC. I'm torn between switching to Mac or staying with PC. My budget is $5000, max. It boils down to Vista Ultimate 64 SP1's vs Mac's interface stability, power invested in the hardware, and ease and versatility of the editing software( FCP 7 vs Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 vs Sony Vegas Pro 9.0a...or Edius(?)), as I understand, so far.
I've been with Vegas 7 for DV editing and had a fair amount of crashes, with the PC I used to edit with:
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU @2.40GHz
2.40 GHZ, 2,00 Go de RAM
ATI Radeon Graphics Processor (0x9588)
Type de CNA(DAC): Internal DAc (400MHz)
memory: 256 MB
Card: ATI Radeon HD 2600XT
. I wonder if Mac is more stable and worth investing in it vs staying with PC but being deprived of FCP...I would like an educated opinion, please. Thank you very much for considering my question, as to whether I go Mac or PC and what hardware specs and what editing software would best suit my budget and my expectations to produce a good documentary.
yeti.

So far, going Mac would, I was told by a Mac Store video specialist, cost be more than $10,000...which I am not able to afford at all.

Now, if I can be assured that Windows Vista Ulti64 can be as reliable and stable an interface as Mac's, but cheaper, and if an editing software like Sony Vegas 9.0a turns out to be a good support for someone like me who wants to do a 2h documentary in HD without ruining his budget, and as competent a software as those that contributed to very good documentary-making, well then, I would go for PC-Sony Vegas.

I am usually pragmatic, and I go with what authentically works well, be it Mac or PC, and since I am independent, I can go with Mac or PC. I do have $ limits to respect though and I want a good technical platform, that will not crash...and won't cost me more than my budget allows. Whatever suits these considerations will get my vote.
Thanks for your upcoming feedback.

Hi all,

I made a simple HD project which I'd like to burn on Blu-Ray disks.

First of all, in my Exports settings of my PPro CS4, I have to choose
between H.264 Blu-Ray or MPEG2 Blu-Ray. What is th emain difference here ?

Second, I chose MPEG2 Blu-Ray and in the presets, I have the options
between 1440 X 1080i 29,97 (which is how I shot the project with my
Sony FX7) or HDTV 1080i 29.97 as well.

Which one do I need to choose ?

Third, in HD, do we have to care about upper or lower field first or
that's only for DV videos ?

Thank you for any guidance!

Okay, so I have some new equipment (sony HDR-XR200V) and adobe premier 7. I have a lot of stuff to learn but the biggest hurdle I have to get over is getting my files from my camera to adobe. I can go straight from camera to adobe but....... I get the buffering affect when I play the clip to edit it. Obv you can't successfully edit a clip thats choppy. The only way I found that I can do it adds a step to the process that I don't want to have to take. I have to use sonys pmb software to collect the vid files from the camera. Then I have to convert them to a different file type, mpeg2 or wmv, then I can pull them onto adobe and edit them. 2 questions are.... Is there a setting on the camera to save my files in a different format other than sonys file format. Is there a way to get around converting the files through adobe? I would assume theres got to be a setting somewhere that will take the raw file and make it usable and edit freindly. So far editing isnt a problem, adobe is actually ALOT easier to use than people make it out to be. The big problem is file conversion, and or eliminating steps before editing.

Thanks

I hate to think of how many of these threads have been posted. I'd do a search but each thread is particular to the OP's needs. The needs of the camera or for a documentary as well as youtube/funnyordie videos.

I was thinking of going SD but don't want to spend a lot of money only to be outdated sooner than later. Below are some of the one's I was looking at. My original budget was $1500 but I've raised it to $2000. Now that I'm going with HD, I think I'm going to have to buy a mac for editing. When going used, is there a certain number of hours used I should be wary of going over? All input is appreciated.

hey guys,

so I have some experience in video making but I want to get into it more buy purchasing a camcorder,

Â

so what I am looking for is a relitivley cheap camer $300-500ish that has a high quality picture (or HD)Â and can capture images that are going really fast (say 300fps or a paintball) well you get what i mean that it can capture fast moving objects and not blur. so basicly

Fast Shutter Speed

Manual Control

Image Stabilization

Large Zoom

Low Light Performance

Easy to Use

but mainly I just want to have a camera to make movies with my friends, not full length productions just a short 5-12 min videos for my school and such,Â

also what would be a good editing software to get that is easy for a beginner like me to get and how much it costs and where i can get it/ download it.

Â

Thanks for reading this and helping me out, like I said I am new to Video making so I am not sure if what I said is exactly industry speak / terms so? laugh if you want,

Â

but really thanks guys anything you say will help me out

I'm probably taking the plunge into an HD camcorder in the near future. However, I'm still using Premiere Pro 2.0 for editing, and upgrading _that_ and my computer system will cost a bit. So I'm wondering about converting AVCHD to DV-AVI so I can edit it (or try to edit it) with my current rig, until I spring for a new one. What are the tradeoffs-- I mean, other than massive files on my hard drive? Is there a loss of color depth? Is DV-AVI limited to certain resolutions, framerates, color scales, etc.?

I've purchased a samsung hmx-h105 and I'm trying to edit in numerous programs with no luck. I just get stuttering video and rendering takes forever.
I'm using Premiere CS4, Pinnacle Studio 12, Windows Movie Maker (which won't even acknowlege the files.
I have an HP HDX-18t, dual core 2.8 processor w/ 6gig RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M video card running on Windows Vista 64-bit.
I thought this computer would be plenty powerful enough to work in HD, but I'm becoming very frustrated. I've tried it in 1080i and 720p (both in H.264 video format)with no luck.
Is this format any different than other HD cameras or do I just need to give up the HD dream.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi all,

I bouhgt a Blackmagic capture card after reading a review article in VideoMaker from Mr. Fulton in April 2009. I liked the fact that he concluded by saying "this could be the last capture card you'll ever need". So I bought the Intensity Pro.

What I didn't realize is that this card would obligate me to buy a whole brand new computer, wayyyyy more powerful than the current one, which I thought was very decent to work with HD. (to help out, this computer is not connected to Internet by any case, it's just dedicated to HD editing).

Now, I run the Disk Speed utility, and I'm wayyyy too slow for the standards of my Intensity Pro in reading and reading, writing HD uncompressed goes all the way up to 465G/hour!

I didn't realize those numbers were that high and would ask a lot to a system.

But I really really really like to use the HDMI input to capture my footage. Firewire gives me trouble on a regular basis (dropped frames, camcorder not recognized...)

My question is : Can I use the card to capture through HDMI and in a way, capture in compressed mode ?

If I'm asking the question here, it's because I didn't get any answer back from the BlackMagic support team.

Thank you for any input!

Jean

It is now the age of AVCHD. While we are facing AVCHD format every day and every where, there grows the need to edit it. Just like what happened to MPEG2 10 years ago.

Like the editors for MPEG2, there is also the problem of GOP-accurate or frame accurate. A GOP of MPEG2 may have 15~30 frames each, but a AVCHD GOP could be seconds in duration. So, simply cut on the GOP boundary may lead to a miss of several seconds, that would be not acceptable for many users.

WYSIWYG, also spelled as What You See Is What You Get, has long been a standard demand for modern softwares. We will surely take this as a normal requirement. Hard to imagine, when a user defined a cut point on the time line, but the output is 3 seconds away from that point.

Because of the longer GOP it has, AVCHD will ask for more accurate editing tools. That is why the frame accuracy will be necessary to the industry.

First Post.
Hello everyone this has been awhile but I need some serious help. Let me start from the top. I want to purchase AVCHD camcorder soon to get away from tape base media. Now with that I have been editing with Final Cut studio for the past three years and before that Avid Liquid 7. Editing on both was not a problem for me. Now with my Mac is a power Mac G5 2.3 duel with 4 gigs of memory. My old PC which I used to edit using Liquid 7 was a home build PC Pentium 4 with 2gigs of memory. My family PC is a new Dell with i7 processor with 6 gigs of memory. I really do not want to use this computer because I don’t want to tie it up when other family members want to use it. So you see the problem that I have. First of all in order to edit AVCHD and transfer it to BluRay I would need a more powerful PC or an Intel Mac. I do home, and family videos, air shows, photo slides show light pro consumer stuff. Here is were I am at. I was looking a Sony Vegas but coming off Final Cut Studio and using things like Motion and Soundtrack Pro I am not sure I would be happy with Vegas. I look hard at Adobe CS4 it looks like it has everything I would need. Final Cut Studio 3 but is does not have true blu-ray authoring like CS4 dose. Here are my choices build a PC myself or purchase another PC or purchase a Mac the thing about purchase another Mac that is going to be at least twenty four hundred dollars along. Oh is an iMac powerful enough to handle FCP-3 or Adobe Cs4? I am trying to come up with the most cost effective upgrade path. Any suggestions

I am looking to purchase a camcorder, and I am wondering what others think about the HD vs SD dilemma, especially with regards to wildlife subjects. I am an aspiring wildlife filmmaker and so far have shot all of my footage in HD (on a Sony FX1 and Canon XHA1). I am happy with the quality of the footage I shot on these cameras, but for wildlife filming longer lenses would obviously be a benefit. Here is a link to my showreel if you would like to see some of my footage: EXAMPLE FOOTAGE. Since I just graduated from college and those cameras belonged to my school, I now find myself without a camera.

I have done a lot of reading on choosing cameras in books and on forums, and I believe I have a pretty good handle on the costs and benefits of both HD and SD for wildlife, and in general. I know that interchangeable lenses are often considered a necessity for wildlife work, and as I have a knowledge of lenses and multi-lens setups I feel that I am ready to handle this type of setup. I know it adds a lot of cost, weight, etc, but again, for wildlife it seems like more of a necessity than perhaps in other film genres. Because of this I have been considering the Canon XL2.

On the other hand, I know that the wildlife film industry, and all video in general, is quickly transitioning to HD. I love the quality and resolution I was able to obtain using the FX1 and XHA1, but I just didn't get the magnification I need to film many subjects. While I could get close enough to woodchucks (within 10ft) to get decent close-ups, I can't get this close to a fox, deer, bear, etc. I am working on a budget, and so I can't afford something like the Canon XLH1 at this point, and so any HD camera I purchase would not offer interchangeable lenses.

At this point my main goal is NOT to produce lots of footage to sell to anyone, but to improve my reel with effective sequences of behavior so that I can show that I am able to shoot for sequence-editing and will subsequently be noticed by producers.

Is a camera like the XL2 good enough for this purpose? Or do I absolutely NEED HD footage in order to compete in today's HD world, even in terms of my showreel? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I think I may have made a mistake.

After connecting my camera to my pc and going in and seeing the AVCHD folder under my hard drive camera, I went into STREAM and just copied the video clips over. Should I have copied the whole AVCHD folder as the clips wont play? They would not play anyway when clicking on them before copying over.
