"Will MPEG2 to AVI be a lower quality file ?"

For the most part, it depends on the bitrate. MPEG-2 and DV-AVI store video by different means of compression (each with its own set of losses). Like I said "for the most part", you will be at a greater loss working with MPEG-2 (25 Mbps) converted to DV-AVI (25 Mbps) than you would be editing the 25-Mbp MPEG-2 as it is (25 Mbps is just an example). I would edit the MPEG-2 (TS) as it is if your system handles it well enough with software that supports it. Converting between different formats involved different dropoffs (information losses) at different parts of the video. You probably won't notice anything converting to DV-AVI, as the quality of the AVI is closer to lossless. But still, the compression algorithms are different. If you prefer the ease of editing, a conversion to DV-AVI is definitely worth it.

Have you checked for a different approach, such as freeware for converting video, other than Roxio? AVS Video Converter

Does anyone here own a Panasonic AG-HMC40? If so, I was wondering how you'd compare it to other camcorders as far as video quality. I ordered one recently and have yet to recieve it so I'm looking forward to trying it out. I've always wanted a decent 3 chip HD camera with pro manual controls. I own two cameras that are three chip that I've aquired through the years; the Sony VX2000 and the Sony FX7. Unfortunately I've been dissappointed with the quality of video of both these cameras but recently I bought the 2009 Canon HG-20 and was blown away. It only has one CMOS chip but the video quality is nothing short of breathtaking. I've been reading recently about Panasonic and the fact that they are producing some high quality HD cameras as well. That's why I decided to purchase the Panasonic AG-HMC40 Camcorder. If anyone here has one and can let me know what you think about it, thanks in advance.

I'm guessing you are trying to decide between the HMC150 and HPX170? I'd go with the 170. DVCPro HD is a much better codec than AVCHD.

I am ready to invest in a camera, I am vacillating between these two cameras. I was drawn to the 150 because the price is very reasonable and is there a big difference in image quality between the two ACVHD or DVCPRO HD, student - focus is documentary (possible narrative on the side)

I was curious if anyone has used the panasonic Ag HMC70U.

Almost everyweek someone on these forums asks what camera to buy and I ran across this unit on B&H (link below). It has tapeless workflow, 3CCD, and XLR inputs all for $1695.00 which is a lot of what people are looking for so I was curious what people thought about it.

I agree Earl...I'm as worried as you, but for the cost, if I can get good footage, I think it will be well worth it. I'm just trying to figure it all out and any help people can provide would be greatly appreciated. It's vastly different than shooting stills, that's for sure. :)

Hope the CMOS sensors hold up to your expectations. The rest of your suppositions seem solid regarding speed, settings, shooting, converting...

...I'm not an expert and have done little more than test some of the CMOS based units available. Still leaning toward Panasonic's HMC-150 with CCDs for my all-around production acquisition needs. If not, the the comparable JVC model. Since you already have invested in the 40 however, it would be interesting to read future posts ragarding your experiences and outcomes.

Hello everyone,
I'm heading out on a 3 week shooting time, and the HMC40 and higher than consumer-tech video is new to me, including my HMC40. I shoot nearly all high speed action footage, and these next few weeks will be mostly shot with great sunlight a the dunes, desert, rock crawling, etc. I typically like to incorporate slow motion into my edited video, so my initial thought is to shoot in 720/60p. Is this the correct thinking? Or, should I be shooting in 1080/60i? I've been told that if shooting for slow motion, use a shutter speed of 1/120 in 720/60p, and 1/60 pretty much no matter what in 1080/60i. To me, based on my experience with my D300 still camera, those shutter speeds are only helpful if I'm wanting to blur the image slightly, or the wheels/tires spinning when panning, but is this different for a camcorder?
Then, my next question is what format to export using Adobe Premier CS4 for use primarily for youtube? I want the best format possible for the cleanest, best looking video on Youtube. Is there a format that YouTube won't compress, such as if I export using f4v or flv, for example? And, if so or not, what codec, bitrate, size, etc would you recommend for optimal playback on youtube?
Secondly, given the above, I'll also want to put this footage on DVD for my customers to use a sale/marketing pieces. Will this play a role as to what format to be shooting in, or do I just pick the best format for the web, then just output it the way it needs to be for the DVD after outputting the footage for the web?
Thanks in advance for the help...

I suggest taking a look at the brochure for the HMC150 and if you get a chance, visit Panasonic AVCCAM website...they have a bunch of great white papers on the workflow and general questions that professionals have regarding the format and editing issues and quality, http://www.panasonic.com/avccam

For that price there really is an interesting comparison, I believe the hmc150 is the only camcorder in its price range that has full HD ccd blocks, has MPEG 4 recording vs MPEG 2 (Sony and JVC and Canon), and has a 2 year extended warranty from panasonic for a total of 3 years...all for the price range of mid $3K ...

The downside is of course it does not have a detachable lens and no HD-SDI, but there are economical converter boxes to go HDMI to HD-SDI out available

I believe Videomaker has a great review on the camcorder as well

To be honest, the camcorder has been really hard to keep in stock here at our store because customers just love it ... I believe we sold 40 in the span of one and a half months back in March/April and we still get calls for the camcorder all the time.

Just got the cam and so far seems great. Wondering if others who have it might answer me 2 questions:

1. Do you record first onto the internal then the SD or vice versa?

2. Do you recommend buying the 2nd battery as another small one (same as what came with) or upgrading to the larger very expensive one?

Thanks.

Hey, I own a Panasonic AG-HVX200. Somebody asked me this today, and made me curious...

With this camera, of course there is a manual zoom mode, which allows free movement of the zoom ring for quick snap-zooms. But also, when you set it to Servo, you are still able to manually zoom with the ring, it's just a little stiffer. The question is, does it harm the mechanics of the zoom lens to operate it by the ring when its set to Servo Zoom mode?

Hello :
I have just purchased an external mic (audiotechnika AT897) for my camcorder Panasonic gs230.

In front of these elements I realized I cannot put the mic on my camcorder due to the incompability between the mic support and the camcorder bracket.

I'd like to know if someone has an idea in order to put the mic on the camera ?
I've seen on ebay some external brackets which could be a great solution but the format is exactly the same as the camcorder bracket...

How to do then ?
All ideas are welcome ... thanks

My Panasonic HDC-HS100 video clips come out as m2ts files. ( I use the included software to transfer files to my laptop ) When I use my Roxio Creator 2009 to convert the file to AVI, there's often a video clip with no audio. Aggravating as HELL !!! Panasonic says that it is a common problem with 3rd party software. It's basically hit or miss when I convert to AVI....there's no predicting when a file will be screwed up !!! Panasonic says to use their program & create an MPEG2 file ,then have Roxio convert it. Will MPEG2 to AVI be a lower quality file ?

Is there ANY program that will take the Panasonic HD file & successfully convert it to AVI the first time ?

My Panasonic HDC-HS100 camcorder has it's own software to transfer video files....they come out as m2ts files. Roxio Creator 2009 will automtically convert it to some mpeg format before I can edit it or burn it to disc.

For some SICK reason, one file out of several will end up with NO audio.....usually the first file out of the bunch.
( all video clips recorded the same day will end up in one folder ). I know that when I change the extension to AVI, I can play the file on my Sony laptop ( Vista/32 bit ).....so, it seems that the original file's audio is OK. Since I changed the extension, the file is basically unusable now, you can just play it, you can't drag it into Roxio.....I still have the original m2ts file of course. Playing from the camera to a monitor displays no problem with the audio & video. I don't get it.....why would just the first clip be corrupt ??
I could still use Panasonic's software to burn directly from the camera to my laptop, but it takes quite a while & I need a dual layer disc for 90 mins. of original video.
This has happened with 90 min to 120 min. video shoots.....which yield several video clips automatically. It didn't seem to be a problem with 2 min. clips.
Re-cap: The original ( 30 min. ? ) video file file seems OK, but, Roxio seems to convert this one clip without audio....where could the problem be ???? It was suggested that I record a short video clip first before the actual recording so "that" practice piece of video will end up with no audio instead of the important footage.

Hi: This is my first attempt in contacting the FORUM. My prpoblem:

Can anyone tell me how I can couple into the AUDIO.VISUAL/S VIDEO OUTPUT TERMINAL for the purpose of monitoring the sound whilst recording? This is essential when using multiple mics. Have missed out on many good efforts due to poor connections in the cable connections. Not known until PLAYBACK!

The supplied MULTI CABLE is basically for DVD or VCR Dubbing - but tapping the 'audio line' to headphones works - but very awkward to use.

Is there a dedicated CABLE for HEADPHONE use available. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, and regards CLIFF

I am still recording in SD on a hard disk camcorder that records MPEG-2. AVCHD is the HD version of AVC MPEG-4 that might not be supported with your editing software. Are you looking for people who have experience with AVC-HD, or do you need advice on converting the files so that you can edit them?

I have the HDC TM-200 - it's a great camera. I think the only difference to the TM-300 is the -200 has 16G internal and not 32G. The -200 with a 32GB card provides 6 hours of high-def recording, so I didn't see the point in waiting for/getting the -300.

I love the low-light capability offered by the 3MOS sensors - takes me back to the old analog video camera days.

The camera is wonderfully light and transfering files directly to my computer is a breeze. I haven't used it very much - only for a suprise 70'th b'day, but it handled the low light of the disco environment (a very swinging aunt :-)) extremely well.
