The VX 1000 is an excellent camera. When I bought mine it cost me $7000!. There is lots of ways to go here but I'm going to suggest one that hasn't been offered. Use Adobe OnLocation and a laptop. The screen is much bigger than most remote monitors, plus it gives you a whole lot more information. You can of course, throw away your tapes. You'll be able to do edit without capturing. The tape drive on my VX 2000 died so that's why I got into it. I have two new FX1000s and I still use a laptop on one so I never have to worry about swapping tapes. It is not as portable as a FireStore but you can pick up a new laptop for a lot less or you can use one that you've got kicking around. Gerry in Calgary

You camera will perform exactly the same whether it is shooting HD or SD but if your out put is SD DVD your SD footage may look better because of the compression that is involved in encoding. I have two FX1000 and my footage is never the problem, it is the encoding. The blacks look much better and there is less digital noise if I use the camera to downsample the file when I author to DVD. If you find a better way to encode please let us know. Gerry in Calgary.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV22 which came with ImageMixer. But, once I transfer the videos into that program, I have no clue how to find them, so I can share them with family.

Can someone help me figure out how to get my videos off the Handycam and onto my computer so I can share them?

I had a VX1000, and a VX2000. I loved these cameras and I did a lot of work with them and they certainly earned their keep. Ok, the new boy is the FX1000. i bought two of them. I'm not saying I regret it but I do have some issues. The audio is not as good as its predecessors. I use an external audio mixer and a field recorder but I'm still pissed. The older cameras would take line in - not so on the FX1000. I have to have a mixer that can attenuate the signal, thank you very much. Can I leave the on camera mics on auto? No way! Anytime you use auto, of course the gain picks up when there is silence, but this is ridiculous. These cameras jack it up so high it creates noise so high it is unusable. I believe that if you want good video you have to control it outside the camera but hell we should get better audio from the cameras. The cameras are good in the video although they don't do 1080p. The low light performance is excellent. You can actually jump up the gain and use the material. Jump it to +9db is perfectly useable. I've never used a videocamera where you can jack up the gain and actually use the footage for more than just a novelty. Gerry in Calgary

God you people know nothing. Take out the tape. The auto shut off cut entirely. Of course if you are recording you need OL. It could be worse if you had a GL2. When it shuts off it forgets its name and shits itself (all your presets are lost) Gerry in Calgary

Mgardner,

Have you noticed a 'lemony fresh' scent coming from your rig? Are you still under warranty? If so, send it in for repair or replacement. If not, then yeah you'll have to pay for repairs. If you're having trouble registering your gear online my first suggestion is to do so on another computer with web access. Your firewall / anti-virus software (if you're using a PC) may be interfering with the info download from Sony's site. Trying it on another system will confirm whether the problem is on your system or if Sony's site is out of whack.

I'm surprised that when you talked to them that they didn't refer you to their support/repairs section. Next time you call customer service ask for that dept. up front and register your repair request directly. Don't forget to record your repair order / issue number (or whatever they call it) and get them to email you the proper forms to include in the box when you send it back. Do all of this asap!

For the past two days I have been trying to send my HDR-SR12 in for repair. The Sony website lets be enter all the informatiion, including credit card, then the page after email confirmation has a error that the page is unavailable. I have emailed Sony and they say it is working, talked to rep who spoke very poor english for El Salvador, who didn't understand the problem and chatted with Sony who said to wait till the website is fixed.

Question - is there another way to send in my camcorder.

Oh, yes, problem is that 1st, the zoom and focus were out of sync, then the zoom made a grinding noise when the camera was turned on, then finally I get a error message and the camera is always out of focus.

Thanks

I myself have a Canon Vixia HF 10 but it was way above $400. I agree with XTR-91, if you're looking for an HD camcorder that is of any quality for $400 or less then you will have a tough search on your hands. Especially if you what the ability to add microphones and other accessories.

"I'm looking for camcorder that offers an Input Mic" ... "$400.00"

Unfortunately, this price range generally poses no interest for having this feature among most manufacturers. The mic input is an essential feature for good sound gathering, even on some of the lower end budgets. Canon, more so than anybody else, has accomplished this by having a mic input in virtually their entire realm of consumer camcorders. But at a budget under $500, I never thought I would have any luck searching. The Canon HG10 HD hard disk camcorder is one thing I came across.

The Canon HG10 (Full HD) has a retail value of $1,300, but is currently selling at some places online for around $400. It's got a mic jack, manual focus ring, and headphone jack, which shares its port with the A/V jack being toggled on menu.

Have you checked the Sony PD170's review on camcorderinfo.com? The performance was great, though I did seem to find some picture discoloring happen at somewhere around 15 lux. The only weakness I really see in this camcorder is the lack of interchangable lens. If you think about it, however, it might not be all that important for your purpose. The only thing I see useful of lens interchangability is getting 3.5mm converter lens (which the camera can probably already get close to), or the use of wide/tele converter lens.

I'd definitely say this is a good camcorder as far as professional features and performance go.

If the camcorder as an accessory shoe, I'd do some research for a small monitor with an RCA or S-Video connector that has shoe mounting capability.

Here's something I came across on ebay. It's a whopping $200, but it is a 7" monitor that includes an RCA cable, battery charger, battery adapter, shoe mount, and remote control. And last but not least, it is "professional" - well, it appears so anyway. By the looks of it, it looks like the pro title is something that you can trust.

You should be able to connect a monitor using the S-Video or RCA connections. Most cameras have those connections.

I'm sure that camera doesn't have XLR connections for a mic, so what you want to look for is a 1/8' connection - looks similar to a headphone jack, but it's not.

I would recommend looking on Craig's List and purchasing from someone you can meet in person. The reason is because you want to play with the camera and make sure it's working properly before you hand over a wad of cash.

While you play with the camera:

Put a tape in and make sure it fast forwards and rewinds w/o any crazy sounds

Record something. Play back what you recorded and make sure the image looks OK and the sound recording works.

Play with the zoom/focus rings and make sure they are working properly

Look at the lens and make sure it's not scratched. Ask the seller if they had a UV filter on the camera. If they did, it mean they probably took care of their camera.

Make sure there isn't any damage on the body of the camera.

Make sure the buttons are working.

The PD150 and PD170 are great cameras. If you don't find them on Craig's List, look into the Panasonic DVX. If you can do without XLR connections, look into the Sony VX2000 and VX2100

I'm currently in Korea trying to look for a standard definition camcorder. I was looking for a Sony Camcorder but the guy who were selling the camcorders told me that Samsung is much better because Sony nowadays is made in China while Samsung is a Korea-based product. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Thank you!

no, that card slot is for photos only. BUT! you have other options . . .

you can connect through the firewire you have a choice of:

a 60Gb hard drive: HVR-DR60
or
Compact flash card unit:HVR-MRC1K

Or if you want movie quality footage:

You can hook up NanoFlash to the HDMI if you want 10-bit 50 100 and 150 mb/s codec recorded onto compact flash cards. these files are ten times the size of HDV and have the maximum color space (known as sony 422) this gets a bit complicated so I'm gona stop here - but it is a option!

yes. It just had condensation in there. This will always happen what ya bring it out in humid heat from a cool interior. I'd not run a head cleaner. Just let it dry.

I don't quite follow?
Do you mean that it will clear up if I just let it sit and leave it alone?
