Hello - Newbie question here: does anyone know if I can connect a small screen/monitor to my dcr-vx1000 (since it does not have an lcd screen)? Also, if I am able to connect a monitor, will I also be able to connect a microphone (at the same time)? Yes, I know the vx1000 is quite old, but this one must have been bought and then stored away, it's actually barely used.

Thanks!

Can someone help me figure out how to get my videos off the Handycam and onto my computer so I can share them?

I had a VX1000, and a VX2000. I loved these cameras and I did a lot of work with them and they certainly earned their keep. Ok, the new boy is the FX1000. i bought two of them. I'm not saying I regret it but I do have some issues. The audio is not as good as its predecessors. I use an external audio mixer and a field recorder but I'm still pissed. The older cameras would take line in - not so on the FX1000. I have to have a mixer that can attenuate the signal, thank you very much. Can I leave the on camera mics on auto? No way! Anytime you use auto, of course the gain picks up when there is silence, but this is ridiculous. These cameras jack it up so high it creates noise so high it is unusable. I believe that if you want good video you have to control it outside the camera but hell we should get better audio from the cameras. The cameras are good in the video although they don't do 1080p. The low light performance is excellent. You can actually jump up the gain and use the material. Jump it to +9db is perfectly useable. I've never used a videocamera where you can jack up the gain and actually use the footage for more than just a novelty. Gerry in Calgary

For the past two days I have been trying to send my HDR-SR12 in for repair. The Sony website lets be enter all the informatiion, including credit card, then the page after email confirmation has a error that the page is unavailable. I have emailed Sony and they say it is working, talked to rep who spoke very poor english for El Salvador, who didn't understand the problem and chatted with Sony who said to wait till the website is fixed.

Question - is there another way to send in my camcorder.

Oh, yes, problem is that 1st, the zoom and focus were out of sync, then the zoom made a grinding noise when the camera was turned on, then finally I get a error message and the camera is always out of focus.

I was looking for a Sony Camcorder but the guy who were selling the camcorders told me that Samsung is much better because Sony nowadays is made in China while Samsung is a Korea-based product.

Hello all,
I'm going to be using this camcorder for a TV production class I'm taking and was wondering if i could dual record with a HDV tape and a memory stick pro duo. granted the card is labeled by sandisk as VideoHD High Performance so it can assuredly handle HD footage.

I know that it can dual record with a tape and HDD, but I dont love HDDs and would prefer the backup be on a card.

I've checked the manual online and while it says it accepts the card, it only mentions how it cannot record video to a "Memory stick duo" but says nothing more about the "Pro Duos" in that regard, other than the fact that the camcorder accepts it. It uses the memory stick duo for still images.

If anyone has any advice that'd be great.

Yesterday, I filmed a wedding outdoor in Medium to average humidity. My camera is only about 1.5 years old. I was using 2 other (VX2100) cameras as well.

The day began about 3:30pm.

The camera in question made it about to nearly the end of the night (9:00pm). All of the sudden it asked for a cleaning tape. I immediately did so, then checked to make sure I did not lose any footage. It was all good except for the seconds before the error message popped up.

I inserted a new tape just to be safe and continued to record and periodically checked the footage (again... all good).

ISSUE:

1. While recording for the last hour of the night, I noticed the time code was constantly resetting at zero.
2. While downloading the tape to the computer, at each timecode reset, there was video distortion (probably a residual video head problem). But it was minimal at about 1 second each. I had to baby sit the entire tape while downloading otherwise the download would be messed up.

Has anyone else had an issue with humidity before? How do you recover from this? Was your camera damaged?

None of the other camera had any trouble and were subject to the same conditions.

I'm curious about what everyone's opinion would be on camera selection for motocross racing. I race ATV motocross or at least I did, recently I was involved in a rather bad wreck that pretty much ended my racing career. I still wanna be involved in the sport and I love watching the movies that are made every year profiling this great sport and filming has always been something I've wanted to get into and did actually dabble in a few years ago but I just can't afford to do both. Now my decision has been made for me but I still need to pick up a camera that will be good for high speed shots upwards of 80 mph. One thing that I want to be able to do is when I edit, I want to slow the shot down significantly i.e.; a quad goes hard down a straightaway but when he gets to the corner the shot is slowed down but when he exits the corner it's back to real time. I don't know if thats confusing, it's the only way I can think of describing it. Here is a link of exactly what I'm trying to do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmBPV9tZQl4 Theres going to be music and everything just like that so mic quality is not a major concern and neither is low light capability. Also I wanna be able to use different filters i.e.; warming, I'm not sure if that will make a difference. I know exactly what I'm trying to do but I need a professional opinion on what I need to be able to pull it off. My price range is around $3k right now, any advice is welcome so if you feel like ranting and expressing your opinion by all means do it.

I just got off the phone with SONY support, 1+ hour of holding and talking to them. My HDR SR12 has less than 4 hours of time on it. I bought it 8/25/2008 for $1,025.00 from Beach Camera.

In May 2009 the camera quit working and gave me a HDD Format error E:31:00. At that time SONY support gave me fixit directions and I wiped HDD with all videos. I was not advised to return camera for problems.

This weekend I did some video and stills. When I tried to copy off the HDD to my computer I got the same error E:31:00. I called SONY there is no fix, except to wipe the drive and re-format. I indicated this was not fixing the problem. Then I was imformed to send it in for repair.

Funny part is, my invoice date is 1 year ago today. They didn't charge me for parts, but the charged me 149.00 for labor. This is wrong, after all this is the second time within 1 year I called about same problem. I don't mind telling you I complained. I was transferred to customer service, where I gave them my credit card number. Then I was given an RMA address to Laredo Texas for repair.

Now guys don't think I'm a troublemaker. I just think this was very unfair, and worst still from what I've read around on the web the HDD has been causing problems for SONY. Yet, I get to pay for fixing the camera.

Regradless, I am thinking to EBAY this camera when it is returned to me. SONY said they would thoroughly assess all the parts in the camera as well, replace the HDD and return it to me "Good as New". The support guy actually said,"it will be as good as what I bought new". I suspect by now most of the problems SONY had are pretty well fixed by now, and the camera will probably be fine. Since there is no serial number on the camera I suspect they will just replace it.

I really want to make this point. I don't think HDD with current technology is a best go for anyone that really needs their pictures. I'm going to go to a tape or card for storage on next camcorder. In other words, I'm not going to lose another picture to the HDD demons.

CAVEAT EMPTOR (buyer beware) definitely applies to SONY camcorder purchases.

Can someone help me answer a question? I own the Sony FX7; and the instruction manual says that the camera should not be pointed directly at the sun, and that doing so can result in damage to the unit. But lots of videos have shots of the sun in them. In fact, videomaker's Tips and Tricks has an instructional video on shooting the sun. Is there really a risk of damaging my camera? If so, what needs to be done to prevent the damage? Thanks!

I need to upgrade my camcorder. I am looking at the HVR-HD1000u. I understand that it won't be as good as the XL2 or something, but my budget is next to nothing and I can get this for about 1300 at B&H. I wanted to know if anyboy has any experiance with this camcorder and what you think of it. I would love suggestions of other cameras if you know of any in the same price range.

Thank you very much,

Hello all, thanks in advance for your help. I recently bought a pmw-ex1. I also bought a sony card reader and started to offload footage onto a WD mybook, via my old Mac G4 and usb, which needless to say took forever. The first time I offloaded footage it was in a file called BPAV. The next time I tried to drag and drop the folder from the card reader it prompted me to change the name of the folder so as not to have to overwrite the existing folder on the external. Standard procedure. I did so and changed the name of the folder to BPAV 2. I did this several more times with different names. I was never able to view the clips on my G 4 but I knew the info was there because the folders took up gigabytes of space on the external. I even more recently bought a macbook pro and downloaded the sony clip viewer for xdcam clips (mpeg4s). When I opened the clipviewer app it could only find the clips that were actually IN the original BPAV folder. The other folders it could see, but not the clips in them. I copied one of the folders onto my hard drive and renamed it BPAV, and sure enough the clipbrowser could see the clips. When I tried to take the contents of one of the renamed folders ad copy it into either of the folder named BPAV it could not see those clips.

What have I done wrong? And how do I fix it? I just want to view the clips in the sony clipbrowser for now. I don't have Final Cut Pro on my computer yet. I won't be able to buy the Final Cut Studio until the first of next month.

Thanks again,

I've spent a lot of time getting well acquainted with my HVR-Z7U, to the point where I even bought a training DVD (the one with Doug Jensen) to make sure I knew everything about it. However, when Jensen gets to the Picture Profile settings - involving color and gamma and so on - he says "I'd go over all these settings but that would take another entire DVD!" Well, not surprisingly, I really want to know what those other settings do. Yeah, I can see some changes when I play with the settings, but to be honest, I don't really know what I'm doing with the camera when I change the settings. Is there a video, online posting or another training DVD that goes over Sony's Picture Profile settings for the camera? Thanks!

P.S. If someone is gonna take a crack at going over the settings themselves, I'm mostly interested in gamma - it kinda seems like contrast as far as I know, but again, I can't find stuff to confirm that.

I am filming a wedding tomorrow for a friend. It is being held under an open frame building, which means there is a roof, but no sides to the building. I went to the rehearsal today and I noticed that everyone's faces were dark because the background (the outside) is so bright and the inside dark. Basically I am trying to shoot everyone in a shadow.

There really isn't the option to have reflectors or extra lights.

Any suggestions or ideas on what settings I could at least start with to get me going? I tried experimenting while there but I think I was panicing and couldn't figure it out. Normally I shoot corporate videos in a very controlled environment...funny how often I am saying that now!

Thank you in advance.
