It's been an interesting three years as Videomaker's
Editor-in-Chief, but I will be moving on at the end of this month.
Looking back at my time at Videomaker I'm very proud of the work our
team put together. It's a challenging time in the print industry, and
because of the nimbleness, dedication, and expertise of our staff,
there's still a print magazine to read, and will be for the foreseeable
future. Our website continues to grow quickly, our Tips and Tricks
videos are very popular, and our forums (that have been online since
1994) have some new life breathed into them. People are still very
passionate about the process of making video, just the media in which
they learn about it, is changing.

It's actually a very exciting time to be a video producer. The
barriers to entry have never been lower. The sheer quality and choices
that videographers have in camcorders and accessories is mind boggling,
compared to when I started my career as an intern here in 1993. And the
most major change is in distribution, where anyone can upload a video
and have an audience of millions.

So it is with a great deal of pride that I etched my name on the
Videomaker mantle. It's a publication that has been going strong since
1985, I read Videomaker before I got into the business, and I'll
continue to read Videomaker after I leave. I hope you found the
articles and videos during my tenure here useful and informative, and
it's been an honor to work with a great editorial staff, and a lot of
fun creating all that content.

This does open up a pretty exciting position now at Videomaker. If
you think you have what it takes to run the editorial department,
create content for print, web, and video, and wouldn't mind living in
the lovely town of Chico, Ca. Why not drop us a resume at jobs@videomaker.com ?

We're experimenting with a few new forums, under the heading Specialty Topics, which you will find at the bottom of the main list of forums. Tell us what you think about them. We're curious to see how useful they are in stoking new discussions, and, in turn, making our common craft of video more rewarding for everyone involved.

CALL FOR VIDEO INSTRUCTORS AND VIDEO PRODUCT REVIEWERS FOR VIDEOMAKER INC:

Hey everyone! From time to time we have short-term, part-time, or work-from-home gigs available at Videomaker, and I thought I'd send a few along in the forums post to let you know what we're working on. I'm known as the "Content Wrangler" here at Videomaker, I hire the freelance writers, instructors, and producers for the magazine and website.

Currently we're looking for instructors to teach at our workshops held at our headquarters in Chico California. These workshops cover three days, and the instructors MUST live close enough to to go home nightly, because we don't pay for hotel/motel expenses.

We're also looking for more objective and savvy reviewers for the equipment that come through our doors. Again, our policy, in most cases, require you to live nearby as we try not to ship product across the country, [cost and time] and our policies don't allow the manufacturers to ship product directly to the reviewers. They must come through us.

If you think you qualify, please read on. As always, I keep outside-the-area contacts on file, too, for writing our many columns and features, as well as possibly lecturing at our traveling conferences. So if you think you have what it takes to write about that subject we all love, VIDEO, please drop me a line.

Jennifer O'Rourke

OUR AD FOR REVIEWERS AND WORKSHOP LEADERS IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA:

Videomaker Inc., publisher of Videomaker Magazine, is looking for Northern California area Video Producers who can instruct on the concepts of video production and teach at our occasional workshops held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Videomaker headquarters in Chico. We are also seeking freelance candidates who can evaluate and review products for our magazine/website.

VIDEO WORKSHOP INSTRUCTORS:

Do you know how to produce video using consumer gear well enough to teach techniques to others? Do you understand the technology well enough to explain it? Do you have a command of the business or legal aspects of video production? Do you have tips to share with aspiring videographers? Do you speak well before groups?

Instructors MUST have a good understanding of the basics of video production, including but not limited to: Lighting techniques, studio setup, location sound gathering, shooting techniques and video editing. The video editing segment of the workshops require the instructors to understand Adobe Premiere Pro and the ability to teach and perform the following editing techniques: insert editing using multiple video tracks, audio insert editing including dialog, music and sound effects, basic titles and uploading a finished project to our YouTube channel.

Instructors will begin working with a class that has been in lectures in the morning on Fridays, taking the theory learned from those classes to practical use with production planning using shot sheets and story boards, followed by shooting the planned project in both studio and on location on Saturday and finally editing the finished product for a final showing and uploading to YouTube Sunday afternoon.

Pay for the weekend is $400.

There will be two or more tracks run simultaneously and the work hours are Friday from 1:00 to 5:00, Saturday form 8:00 to 5:00 and Sunday from 8:00 to 1:00. You must be available at all of the workshop times. No split schedules. The next workshop dates are August 7-9th 2009, October 9-11th 2009 and December 4-6th 2009.

This link takes you to the Workshop events page on our website: http://events.videomaker.com/

Only video producers with the skill level to teach a class on video production techniques should apply.

VIDEO PRODUCT REVIEWERS:

We also need skilled video producers with writing abilities to test product for review. These reviewers must have a good command of writing skills and the ability to objectively test video production equipment. This equipment includes consumer to prosumer camcorders, mics, lights, hardware and editing software. Product reviews must reflect expertise as well as good grammar and composition for publishing in Videomaker magazine and our website.

________________________________________________________________________________

Videomaker is always looking for Northern California video producers, freelance review writers and workshop instructors. We'd like to know who you are. Please contact us to be added to our local producer database for assignments, video producing related events and included in social announcements in the video production circles in the Northern California area.

Please contact Jennifer O'Rourke at editor@videomaker.com and put "Chico Workshops", "Employment Opportunities" or "Review Writers" in the subject line.

Know someone else who knows video? Tell them about this opportunity and/or send us their names and email addresses. If possible, please copy and post this where other videographers may see it!

How do I read the forums?

In English, from left to right. (Just kidding.) Everything is broken into categories, that is what comes up first when you access the forums.

Scroll down a bit and you'll see the most current posts from all of the forums. You can read anything that looks interesting by clicking on it.

You can also search the forums. There is a search box on the right-hand side of the window.

Why would I need an account?
You need an account if you want to create new posts or respond to existing posts.

But I just wanted to ask what kind of camcorder to get.
Please read 10 Points to Consider when Purchasing a New Camcorder first. It may answer all of your questions before you need to ask that question here.

How do I post?
To create a post, find the topic list. There will be an "Add New >>" button. Give your post a title and type the body of your post. You may also post images and add videos to your posts. Pick ONE section for the post to appear in, and then click Send Post. Be patient in waiting for a reply.

If you need some guidelines for posting questions, we recommend the document How to Ask Questions the Smart Way.

How do I reply to an existing post?
When you are reading an existing post, a reply box will appear under the last reply to the post (or the post itself, if it has no replies yet.) Type in your reply and click Send Post.

What are things that will not earn happy points with the moderators?
Everyone around here is generally pretty easygoing, and we'd prefer to keep it an easygoing place that is encouraging and helpful to all participants. And remember the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

If you've got an axe to grind with someone, take it somewhere else. No one else wants to hear it. If the only thing you intend to do here is cause grief, don't expect to be welcome here for long.

There is no need to cross-post. If you've got a question that could possibly be addressed in several forums, post it to the one that is most relevant in your opinion. The reason we don't like cross-posts is because responders to one thread may not see ideas posted in other threads (and it also buries other's posts unnecessarily.)

Do not type in ALL CAPS. Like most other places on the internet, it's interpreted as shouting and as such is considered rude.

As the forums are pretty easygoing (and because a sizeable portion of forum participants are probably writing, shooting, editing, authoring discs, setting up encoding jobs, taking care of kids, cooking, or sleeping at any given time that they're not on the forum), this has historically been considered a slow forum. So be patient. Don't come back in three hours to complain that no one loves you--it might make you seem like an ingrate. If you haven't seen an answer to your question in three days or so, try elaborating a bit on your question--that might give someone who might have the answer you need the missing piece of information they needed. If you're posting because you're having trouble with something, keep trying different things, and tell us what you've tried and what the results were. See the above-referenced How to Ask Questions the Smart Way document.

In general, we recommend sticking to the Netiquette guidelines as specified in RFC 1855. (This is an historically interesting document that is partially outdated. Chapter 3 is most relevant here, but do have a gander at the entire document.)

Generally speaking, if a thread has been inactive for longer than three months, adding a new post to the thread is frowned upon.

What will get me blocked outright?
We have no patience for spam or astroturf (i.e. product guides planted by product manufacturers or their affiliates). You will be blocked immediately upon discovery of such posts. We are accumulating IP addresses, and you may find yourself blocked as a result of participating in this type of activity.

What about contacting someone off the forums?
You can if you'd like; however, if you have a relevant question, it is best left to the forums, so everyone can benefit. Your problem may be the same problem someone else is having, so that discussion may help them as well.

Behind the scenes, we've been taking a hard look at our forums and have come to the conclusion that we could do better. Better communication, better organization, and better responses from the editorial staff.

We're in the process of designing a new Videomaker forum, and wanted to solicit ideas from our users about what works and what doesn't and incorporate any suggestions you may have about how to make the next generation of Videomaker's forums better.

So please feel free to comment on things like:

Forum Organization: Should the forums be more specifically product based, or more general? What categories do you think should go, and what are essential? Any suggestions for new categories?

Forum Software: What don't you like about our current forum software? What forum features would you suggest to improve the usefullness of this site?

Forum Design: Like the red? Hate it? Layout OK? please tell us a little about aesthetics of the forum.

Any and all comments on the state of Videomaker's forum are welcome. Feel fee to include links to other forums to illustrate your points.

Let's take this opportunity to design the next version of Videomaker's forums together...

Thanks,

The article "Multicam Video Editing Tips" was very practical and should help people who want to do multicamera shoots. Similar techniques can be applied to dual-system audio productions, where the audio is recorded onto a separate recorder instead of the camera. For example you might want to take a feed from a soundboard into a portable audio recorder like the Zoom H4. This really simplifies the recording because you don't have to run a cable to one of the cameras.

There is another option for doing the synchronization. Our company is developing a product called PluralEyes that does it automatically. It is currently in beta testing and we welcome new testers who would like to try it out. There's a short video here that shows how it works and the variety of multicamera productions that the independent video producer might want to consider.

In the April issue of Videomaker magazine, founder and CEO Matt York wrote, "How may we Serve You?" a question to readers in his Viewfinder column. The story was about Paper vs. Cyber: in other words, the benefits and costs of a paper magazine versus the website version of Videomaker.

We received dozens of responses and printed a number of them in our June 2008 In Box. But, as we stated, paper is not unlimited, and, for the most part, cyber still is, so we invited readers to continue this discussion here, on this forum thread we titled Videomaker's Mission. Let us know what you think, as we said in the paper magazine, we ARE listening.

I would like to see more information on the business of video production. This magazine focuses on trends very heavy but what about trade journals or information on the industry in these economic trends is it getting harder or easier for production companies to thrive in these times?? I just wanna see more of the business aspect.

Could you please add Magix Movie Edit Pro to your list of editors and give it a channel? I realize it is not as popular as other editors but I believe the community would benefit from having other editors listed and a place to talk about them.

I own a newspaper publication that covers amature sports and now we want to go into online video sharing.  We are developing a portal that will allow free and paid video content.

My question is could I be headed for a lawsuit if I sell the edited footage of those public events online?  Also, many of the events involves youth that are playing in some sports league. Â

I talked to my attorney about this and he said that first of all because it is a public event I don't need permission to film it.  He said to show good faith I might want to ask first but it is not necessary. Just show up like a news crew would and get the footage. He also suggested that if I am going to highlight a player that I try to locate his parents while at the game and get them to sign off on a release right then and there.

Any thoughts? Â

This start-up is definitely for those, who are engaged in self video production. Their content base counts hundreds of pretty interesting and well-designed shows (I've checked carefully)) They are trying to accumulate all the best from infamous filmmakers and then entertain us -I've never seen NONE of their animation collection before. You may also try - I'm waiting for your impressions.

I like this forum a lot. I get off on being able to answer people's questions, and I feel Videomaker has done a great job developing this. There are some things I'd like to see changed though.

 1. Email notification if someone responds to a post I have posted or replies in a post I have also responded to. Â

 2. Someone just sent me a personal message to my account and I had topics separated into paragraphs. When I sent the message, it smashed everything into one paragraph. Not cool.

 3. I want to be able to make a cooler looking profile, but that's not a big issue. Ya know what would be cool? If people could rate you on your profile based on how helpful you are.

Â

That's just my two cents. I'm not trying to be nit picky, I just feel that no matter who you are or what you're doing, there's always room for improvement. Keep up the good work.Â

I guess it was just launched at lets indie filmmakers like us submit their work and if it’s approved by their committee it’s posted on their site where people can pay a few bucks to view/download it. sounds like a cool way to make some money of your work. anyone know more info about it?

I've been a reader of Videomaker for a while and am constantly frustrated by it. The topics covered are good but too many of the articles leave me with an empty feeling. An example: the About Face! article. I've been curious about the face detection feature for some time. I want to know: how does it work? is it reliable? what effect does it have? would I want this feature in my next camera?

But basically the article just says: faces are important, lots of cameras have the feature, and if you want to know if it's useful you have to try it for yourself. That's useless! I knew all that before I read the article. The writer should give me his opinion. We're all adults (sort of) and will know that it is just an opinion and not the final definitive word on it. But tell me something. You know more about the topic than I do, tell me something I don't know.

Ditto for the basic instructional articles. I am looking to buy my first lighting kit. I feel like I've read a zillion articles in Videomaker about lighting. But basically they all just say, "think about what you need and choose your equipment appropriately". Useless! Instead, tell me what you personally would buy for $500 or $2000. Other knowledgeable people will disagree but that's fine. Start a <strike>fight</strike> discussion and let's get some real points of view being shared.

That would make the magazine much more useful. Don't be so timid!

This is a response to the blog post "Youtube is ruining video!" which was posted in the blog section of Videomaker yesterday. The original post was written by the signature tomskowronski and before you keep on reading this forum post, you should probably take a look at http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/.

I figured that, since my comment probably never will be moderated, I'll post my reply here to fire up the discussion.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, that was arrogant.

What if a journalist would say that blogs (and use your post as an example) is ruining the written word? Usage of clichés, simple typing mistakes such as double spaces or misuse of commas. Short sentences and paragraphs used only to get the viewer to not twirl away to another blog or site because the one he’s currently reading is too “boring”. One could say that blogs are making the art of writing into a joke.

Or if a web designer (or any graphic designer as a matter of fact) would say that blogs and poorly designed web sites are ruining the art of digital design. Poor typography, columns too narrow, not knowing when to save your graphics as gifs, jpegs or png’s, framing the content into something that is by definition unknown to man, functions in product not functioning properly and so on. One could say that poorly designed blogs and web sites are completely destroying the art of digital design.

So, Tom Skowronski, I’ve decided to retype your poorly written blog post not only one, but two times, focusing on the two groups mentioned above. Feel free to copy it and then paste it into whatever community you find fitting.

THE WRITTEN WORD

Alright I know, I get it. You can post your OWN content on Blogger! But that doesn’t mean that you should. There are always positives and negatives when it comes to any user generated written sites. Here are the positives, freedom of expression. That’s right, whether you want to tell off the girl who turned you down with a haiku. Or you feel like quoting all of Barney Stinson’s one liners from How I met your Mother, you have the right to express yourself! Should you? Sure you bet!

What’s the downside? The result is usually, people who own computers (or pen and paper, or maybe a typewriter) end up creating the content. Instead of people who know how to write, creating the content. This means poor sentences, misuse of punctuation and exclamation marks. These are perfect examples of what not to do while writing your next novel! Read five blog posts and see if you notice any of the seven deadly sins of web writing, I did. Go try, here are some to get you started:

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

There is no creativity, no flow and no talent. More importantly, these words are crap. Therefore, the art of the written word doesn’t exist on Blogger. Which, ironically enough is a web site geared around writing.

THE DESIGN

Alright I know, I get it. You can design your OWN pages with Dreamweaver and publish it online! But that doesn’t mean that you should. There are always positives and negatives when it comes to any user designed site. Here are the positives, freedom of expression. That’s right, whether you want to tell off the girl who turned you down with a picture of her nosehairs sticking out. Or you feel like showing photos of yourself in underpants with a print from the poster from Jaws, you have the right to express yourself! Should you? Sure you bet!

What’s the downside? The result is usually, people who own computers end up creating the content. Instead of people who know how to use photoshop, write css, code html and various dynamic script languages, creating the content. This means stretched and poorly compressed images, no color harmonies, poor typography and repeated background patterns used not only as a column background, but throughout the entirety of the site. These are perfect examples of what not to do in digital design! Watch five websites and see if you notice any of the seven deadly sins of web design, I did. Go try, here are some to get you started:

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

http://videomaker.com/community/blogs/videonews/2008/10/4107-youtube-is-ruining-video/

There is no creativity, no design and no talent. More importantly, these sites lack style and format. Therefore, the art of digital designn doesn’t exist on MySpace (for instance). Which, ironically enough is a web site geared around creating web content and design.

This could go on for a while. What about photographers flaming Flickr or musicians raising hell about MySpace or Virb? The bottom line is that with the good, you also have to put up with the bad. YouTube is a fantastic way to give people the opportunity to show of their work to the entire world, give them the opportunity to express themself and try out different techniques with instant feedback from people who are not afraid to speak their minds. Sure, the compression can at times be hard on your eyes, the physical size of the movies are a bit small and the content can at times be really, REALLY bad.

But you know what?

You don’t have to watch it.

I understand that this forum is more for the website but hopefully it will get to the paper people as well.

I have been a reader and subscriber of Videomaker magazine for around 3 years now and a forum participant for the same amount of time.

I received the latest issue of Videomaker magaizine and was sooo excited about what I found inside this month. A how-to on a DIY camera jib. That was so awesome. I've scowerd the internet looking for something like this and you finally put it in the magazine. Thanks.

What I think you should do next issue is a DIY steady cam (no, not the poor man's $15 one that's all over the internet but the one that you wear like a harness). The one that is like the one advertised in your mag with the pretty girl wearing it.

I was seriously considering canceling my subscription because it's getting to the point where many of the stories are recycled from previous issues (I.E. How to do proper lighting. I get it already the story is done at least once a year...With the same pictures, none-the-less), and what's more, most of the articles are product reviews for equipment that 90% of the videomaker community will never be able to afford, will ever want, or will ever need.

Sure they are fun to look at in the stores but honestly, in the three years that I have subscribed to the magazine, I have read maybe 2 of the product reviews, maybe. Honestly, unless I am just looking for something to read before bed to lull me off to sleep I skim through the product review to the more interesting How-To's and DIY's (New feature this month) which are few and far between.

The How-To White Balance article from a couple months ago is permenantly paper-clipped on my desk. You should make topics such as this and the DIY video equipment a permanent Chapter in your magazine each month. You know, for those of us who really don't care about the latest $10,000 HP editing computer for the 5 month in a row or the $8,000 HD prosumer camcorder.

Honestly I can look in any consumer electronics magazine or website for that kind of product review. It's almost as if your staff has run out of things to teach the readers, so they decide to fill up more pages with product reviews thinking that no one will notice the reduced content.

If I wanted to buy a magazine that was just a huge advertisement, I'd just go rip the adds out of the electronic store ads from the sunday paper.

You've already shortened the magazine due to shipping cost. But now all that fills its pages are ads and product reviews that might as well be ads, whether this is how Michael York explains it or not. I know you're not taking kick backs or being persuaded to review something for the positive when it is a negative. But when I, the reader, look at the magazine, all I see is one big ad magazine.

I originally subscribed to the magazine because I wanted to learn some tips and tricks to becoming a better film maker. Now the only thing I can get from 75% of the magazine are the pros and cons of a hard drive tower or DVD duplicator that I will never purchase. 20% are paid advertisements and if the readers are lucky 5% might be a useful Video-making tip.

So either start putting some useful video-MAKING articles in the magazine or it will no longer be worth my money to subscribe to your once useful and entertaining magazine.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely

I'm wondering if Chicago, or any other large city in the midwest (St. Louis, Kansas City) might be on the list of cities that videomaker will produce a workshop. I've noticed that the midwest seems to be getting slightly snubbed, haha. I would be very interested, and I'm sure there would be a large number of other folks that would also like a few opportunities around here.

Where does the copyright issue fall regarding video shot for example on a city street, when business signd (like McDonalds maybe where you see golden arches) are in the shot.

Can this be sold as royalty free stock by the artist who captured the image? Or does this fall into the gray area of how thw shot is composed, and how prominently the sign is displayed. Or better yet can I shoot a wide exterior of a McDonald's (from the street) and sell it as my own copyrighted work, and not get sued?

What about architechtual copyright, can a videographer infringe upon that (i.e. shots of a building).

Also are public structures like government buildings fair game?

And how about public structues (ie stadiums with a sports teams logo?

Who the heck owns what?

Thanks,

There really is no set vacation "season" for us here at Videomaker... but I'm sorry to see that it's taken them a while to get back to you. (Our online account manager system is being overhauled at the moment, though--I hope something didn't go horribly wrong there. I'll ask our IT guy.) Definitely give them a call M-F 8-5 (PT) at 800-284-3226. You can also email them at customerservice@videomaker.com--they're usually fairly fast on that email (sub-48 hours).
