I have a JVC GY HD 100U I am getting zebra striping around the edges of objects that I am videotaping. I would like to know how to work with zebra or know how to take it out. It also happens when I am videotaping under florescent lighting such as supermarkets with lots of glare from the products.

I've recently been looking at a simple audio mixer to accomodate multiple microphones to my camcorder's audio input. The specs of the Behringer MX-400 show compatibility with 4 line inputs, seeming to indicate that the mixer does not provide a means of amplifying.

Will this setup work with microphones plugged in, sending the output to the camcorder to do the amplifying and generate a healthy sound signal? Or does the mixer somehow block the camcorder from amplifying (e.g. preventing a means of sending 'phantom power' to the microphone(s))?

"Given that the average human head of hair has 100,000 strands, NVIDIA hasn't hit Caprica levels of in-game realism yet, but for today's technology, we figure we can settle for this remarkable leap forward."

Final Cut 7 does not capture the last clip when using log and capture - HDV.

Easy set up is set to 1080i/50

This means that if there is only one clip on the tape it is not captured - sure there is work-around - I add a clip after I have finished filming - but wondered if anyone has experienced this problem.

it is not the tapes as iMovie has not problem capturing the last clip

I have tried to capture from different HDV cameras.

It's not in my budget particularly right now, but just for the amusement, I was looking for a good, Sony solid state camcorder that shoots 1920x1080 full High-Definition video. Coming across what it seemed like just appeared a week ago, I realized that the camcorder was announced November 18 of 2009, and there's truly a lot packed in a 4k-costing camcorder - http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-Announces-the-NXCAM-A-Professional-AVCHD-Camcorder-37295.htm. MSRP is actually $5,000, but from the looks of it, it seems to be one of the best budget HD camcorders with features you'd expect to find on a $10,000 camcorder... solid state recording, XLR inputs, GPS navigation, and a 720/60p shooting mode. To me it really surpasses everything in that price range, such as the Canon XHA1, Sony HDR-FX1, and FX7.

What are your thoughts on this, as an owner, potential buyer, or just a reader of this article?

The market's growth has been powered by the rise in lower cost, pocket camcorders, such as Pure Digital's Flip, said Chris Chute, Research Manager, IDC. So while the traditional camcorders we know (and love) are holding steady, the overall market is pushed higher by the hot-selling Flip and its many imitators. The overall market for pocket models grew 31 percent in 2009. More than half (53 percent) of all camcorders shipped in 2009 were pocket models, a figure expected to climb to 63 percent in 2010, Chute said.

Inside the traditional camcorder market, the shift is on to HD. Nearly 45 percent of all units shipped last year were HD models, a figure Chute expects to hit 60 percent in 2010. Flash memory is also rapidly becoming the format of choice among consumers. According to NPD Group, 65 percent of all camcorders sold in through Oct. 2009 were flash-based (including pocket models) vs. 36 percent in 2008.

I am a wedding videographer and am looking at purchasing either a Glidecam HD-2000 or 2000 pro. There is a $200 price difference between the two, so I'm trying to figure out why the HD series is so much more expensive (if it's worth it). Also, does anyone know how often upgrades to this series are released? I don't want to buy the HD if they're going to upgrade in April.

With the advent of Adobe's CS line of software (particularly After Effects and Premiere) they have been making a serious effort to place themselves on equal footing with giants like Avid and FCP. Now with the pending release of their new Mercury Playback Engine, Adobe's about to send a seismic level shockwave that the big boys better be paying attention to.

With the Mercury Playback Engine, Adobe Premiere will be able to finally take advantage of powerful off the shelf gamer GPU's and marry them with multi-core CPU's in a 64-bit OS! I could tell you how it looks, but it would ruin the surprise. Instead let Dave Henly show you what's coming down the pike. If it works like the demo everyone from newbies struggling to work with AVCHD to pro's struggling with 4k will be able to benefit! They say it's "to be included in a future release", but it damn well better be in CS5!

Good day to each of you.

I am new at video editing, finally picked up a subscription to VM and then found this forum. WONDERFUL. (Finally a civil on-line community, it's too rare)

While retired very early due to a disability, I've been a film (still) Photographer for a number of years. Never gone digital execpt for quick snaps etc. now for specific reasons, I'm moving to Multi-media, i.e., Still Photographs (Scanned negatives), HD Video via a JVC-10U, 8MM film video processed on transfered onto DVD, Voice-over and Background tracks, i.e., Audio B roll. I sincerely believe that Multimedia is the way to go for any photographer with something to present i.e., story, documentary etc, is a large emerging technology.

I now have a new iMac 27", 3.0Ghz w/1TB internal HD, 2TB external Drive and several 500GB external drives.

I'm very excited about this passion and excited to have found this just awesome community Thanks to VideoMaker.

So, my iMac has just 4Gig of RAM expandable to 16GB. I've getting the vibe from reading this forum that my next step would be to try to upgrade RAM???

Keeping in mind that I've purchased FCP Studio 2 a bit ago, a wonderful USB condenser Mike system.

I'm also learning via web tutorials and plan on buying the VM tutorials if you don't think they are above my head?

One more please, when I can afford it I'll get an external TV but I would like a jog wheel to help. I have MS and less hand and arm work is really a relief for me. So, do I wait and save for a Euphonix Transport or is there something else for me that would be worth it?

Thank you so much.

Tom

In the forums we get lots of questions on how to do something from shooting to post work. Often videos depicting the process of doing said thing are posted to help illustrate answers. It is not uncommon though that many of those training videos lack key elements which make a DIY video both informative and interesting.

Multiple views including; close-ups and angle changes

Adequate lighting on subject

Text to back up spoken points

Though there are no spoken words in the DIY video "How to Create Super Macro Lens" by Lozzless, there was a good deal of thought and effort put into this. Though far from perfect, it's a pretty good example of how to put together elements for your training videos. Note: I by no means endorse the methods used in the video for modifying a camera lens, just the way the video was put together.

Hi All,

I am looking for some advice on not only organizing my project files but also making sure I have everything backed up in the most efficient manner possible. Right now I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, and I have two Hard-drives (500GB) and an external Hard-drive (1TB). I have had to reformat often due to Hard-drive failures and corrupt Windows OS.

I would love to know what everyone does to keep their files backed up and organized so that reformatting the Hard-drive that contains the operating system is as quick and painless as possible. How am I able to easily "re-link" assets and find projects? My situation doesn't seem that complicated, but please be as specific as possible with your response. Thank you for your time and advice!

P.S. If this is in the wrong forum, sorry!

I have just started to work with my new XH A1 and have been shooting some interviews. It is being used along with a GL2 and the GL2 is much sharper than the A1. I am downloading both into Adobe Premier and I have to use an Unsharp mask at 150 to even get them close. Canon support has not been any help. Has anybody experienced the same problem or is there a workflow that is best to get the best out of this camera? Thanks for any help!

I have a Panasonic PV-GS39 camcorder from a few years back. It is a mini-dv camcorder. My question is about whether it can be recognized by my iMac Intel 24" running leopard. I understand that a firewire cable is needed to transport video. However, should the computer also recognize the camcorder when connected via usb at least. Will this camcorder even work with Mac? And if so, will the video files be accessible in FCE to edit? Any suggestions on where to find a solution would be very helpful. Thanks.

Do music videos normally get storyboarded? I've seen videos that look really planned out, and some that could have just been recorded from different angles and put together. Which works best for a music video?

Examples:Kutlass - Shut Me Out has signs of story boarding, while Hanging on by a Thread by The Letter Black doesn't have many signs of storyboarding.

We are currently looking into buying this camera. However we have a few questions. Does this camera support direct capturing through HDMI output. We have a Black Magic Intensity Pro video card that supports HDMI capturing, we just need to know if this camera will allow it. Thanks.

Howdy. I'm looking at purchasing a steadicam device and can't afford the $4K contraptions yet. After doing some web searching, it seems the Hague products seem to be a good starting point. I've found a few youtube videos on the Mini Motion Cam, but not any home videos with the Maxi Motion Cam. Has anyone used either of these? If so, would you recommend it?

If there are other products I should be looking at in a similar pricing range (below $300), please do let me know. Thanks!

One of the things making many of novice to intermediate shooters and editors on the forum's heads spin is the "HD" format itself. "What HD Camera should I buy?" "What HD editing software should I buy?" On and on with good reason. 'HD' comes in a number of 'flavors' (i.e. resolutions, codecs, etc.) and it can be enough to make your freakin' head spin.

However, unless you're working on really high-end projects for theatrical or broadcast TV distribution you can safely pass on HD formats like, HDCAM, XDCAM, DVCPRO HD, REDONE and a number of others. Most of you will be working with DV, HDV and AVCHD formats which are common among consumer, prosumer and low to mid-level pro cameras. So unless you're prepared to fork over at least $10k for just a camera body, the pro formats don't concern you. Relax.

I've said it a number of times in other posts (and I'll say it again) that the bottom line of what gear and software you get totally depends on your planned output. So if you're looking to get into HD but can't make heads or tails between DV, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 30p, 60i or p and so on, read the following article by Zack Stern, "8 HDTV Myths Demystified". The article pertains to purchasing an HDTV, but remember whether it's a computer monitor or a TV that's going to be your primary output point. So knowing how your footage is going to be viewed on your primary output point will be a big help for deciding what kind of gear and software you should be looking to get.

Here on the forum there is a constant stream of posters asking, "What should I do to save my videos?" Now, that's a broad question. But whether you're shooting tape or one of the varieties of 'tapeless' card-based flavors, the issue these days is archiving both for long-term but primarily in the field.

The following article "Blazing a Path in the Digital Wilderness" by Carl Mrozek covers a wide range of areas including; outdoor/wildlife, workflow in the field, storage/power issues and a lot more! Though his work is primarily with P2 based tech (this ought to make Robgrauert very happy), he does talk about XDCAM and other tapeless digital professional formats.

So how can this work for you? Granted you may not be like the featured Cinematographer Dereck Joubert and drop $750k worth of equipment in a crocodile filled river and have to go fish it out, but how he dealt with that and continued on is a great example of what today's gear is capable of.

As a former Combat Cameraman seeing footage from our growing number of war zones hits me on multiple sides. I can see well beyond the propaganda and both understand the situation from both the war fighter and concerned civilian perspectives. When I first joined my Combat Camera Unit I quickly realized I had much to live up to. My fellow teammates and I were the 'technical descendants' of Director John Ford among a host of famous filmmakers and photographers down through the decades.

Though I suspected it beforehand, I found that ours was a unique profession. We were warriors, but our job was 'Telling the Story of War'. I remember talking with some young Marines on a mission and they couldn't understand why I carried a camera instead of a rifle. My answer was, "I carry a rifle too, but if you see me change out my camera for the weapon we're in trouble!"

I passed on the 'torch' years ago and now a new generation is doing what I did by taking the latest technical innovations into the field to tell today's war stories. Shot with the Canon 5DMkII The video "Why We Fight" by Army Specialist Matt Freire and 1st Lieutenant Tyler Ginter gives us the story of one unit of the Afgan Special Forces from their point of view.

Hello All,

One thing I have always wondered about is how to shoot a conversation between two people and make it sound and look seamless. This would entail alternating shots from behind each of the actors so the audience can see actor "A" speaking but then switch to a reaction shot on the face of actor "B" while still hearing actor "A" speak.

I have the Adobe Production Suite and I'm just going to be shooting with the mic on the camera (yes, I know, not ideal).

For instance, let's say I have the actors play out the scene two times, with me filming from behind one actor the first take and then from behind the second actor on the second take. How do I make sure I can incorporate both angles and make sure they don't step on eachother's lines? Also, what effects in Adobe can smooth over the transition between clips that have different audio? (In other words, chopped up audio from each take) Sometimes I find it a bit jarring.

Hopefully I've explained the problem well enough, so if you know what I'm referring to, how do you do it well with one camera?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question!

Well, two projects in the last two months have vanished. Specifically, I open the project and the timeline window is empty. Wow. Just wow.

I'm also having a problem that the DVD's are burning for "other than North American Region". Pinnacle says they won't answer my WTF question since they don't support LAST YEAR's software (10.7).

As soon as I'm finished my current projects I'm going to remove all the unreliable PINNACLE junk off my HD. I can't decide whether to burn the disks and smash the ashes, or to smash the disks and burn the debris... either way, the leftovers are getting flushed.

Hi Y'all newbie here and major procrastinator. Anyway finally got around to transferring kids home movies from 10 years ago and image from tapes appear negative-like and blurry? Tried numerous cassettes and they all look the same. Could it be age/condition or could it be cables? Very distraught over it. Are my treasures gone? I feel like an idiot for waiting so long to handle this. Thanks, Rick

I attend a few outdoor public events that run thru out the summer out on the water. They tend to get a little wild (in a good way) and I always have the video cameras and other still cameras rolling when the beads start flying later in the afternoon(actually it is pretty easy to get volunteers for the film crew at these events).

Up until now I cut the footage together with some party music and we usually get together in around this time of year for the "movie premiere" aka excuse to drink beer look at bikinis and dream about the warm weather.

This year we took over a local bar and had 60 - 70 people there.

Before this gets any bigger, what are the "rules" about filming public events and what can and can not be used. Up till now I have not sold any of the DVD's but as this event gets bigger it is starting to get expensive and would like to recoup some of the costs

Any thoughts?
