How about a specific Videomaker Forum Feedback section?

Where members can post bugs, issues they are having with certain access, suggestions for improvements, things they would like to see, new major topic headers, (much like this topic but under a major header). Then others could see if there were prior posts of thier issue/suggestion and not repeat (to some degree), or participate in a poll as to whether it is a valid idea. Videomaker could then reply with updates to those posts and, possibly, to the forum as well.

We've got a couple of changes made.

E-mail Post Tracking and Notification

Log-In Retention Cookies

I see your point in regards to video cluttering up the page. A nice thing about the plugin we're using for video is that it's just a link to the video. When the plugin is turned on, the link is transformed into a flash embed tag (video will be shown.) If pages become too cluttered, we can turn off the plugin, leaving simple links in their place.

I agree with most of the suggestions so far:

E-mail Post Tracking and Notification
Spam Flagging
Log-In Retention Cookies
Forum Topics for Major Software Titles (Avid, Adobe, Apple, Sony, Grass Valley, Newtek, Autodesk, ProTools, Steinberg, Cakewalk, etc.)
A Newbies Section

I don't like the idea of being able to embed video or audio. I think that would get really messy. Many users would be posting stuff that they think is great, yet may not contribute to the usefulness of the Forum. The Forum would slowly morph into a "youtube"-like place. Links work fine.

Just my thoughts.

maybe wordpress is the problem?

I do like this forum & appreciate the effort the powers that be put in to it.

Something of a new visitor here, I am unable to find this feature as of yet but the option to remove my post (as long as it's not the topic header). I have on a couple of occasions responded to one topic thinking it was another and the best I could do was edit the text out of the wrong post when I just want to delete that one.

I think a simple upgrade to vBulletin would work perfect. That forum software comes with all the features needed and an owned license is not much. I have a bunch of them, they are the best to work with. Just my opinion.

Interesting issue with the new format. See "pinkish tracking line on bottom of screen?" under Video Production. On my display the avitars and some text end up over the right hand column instead of main body of the forum chain.

Currently we're seeing what we can do with this forum. For example you can now subscribe to a forum topic and get email notifications of each topic.

We're also going to be merging some of the categories together soon, mostly the ones that aren't well trafficked.

We're also going to be working on a FAQ that tells you how to do certain tasks, like how to embed a youtube video for example.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc889KZMx6M&feature=channel_page

(simply cut and paste the full youtube url directly into the text window)

What do you think about the organization of the Forum Topics? Which ones do you feel could go, are there any we should add? JB

I was thinking about this. I am a FC Studio user. But in the forum list there is a DVD Studio Pro Forum and an Apple forum. Why not combine these two. I've noticed that most of the questions asked could pertain to both. It would be easier to combine the two. Especially since they are not viewed or posted to on a frequent basis.

And a job board, for instance I conciter myself to be a master at audio editing after doing it for 25 years, however I totaly lack that creative ability to take a bunch of video clips and align it in a story. A job board that would allow me to post my resume and abilities and the services i am willing to hire out, and allow me to view everyone elses resume and services so that I may sub out the work that I am only ok at.

We've been looking into new spam filters. The one we're currently using was flagging to many legitimate posts, in the mean time we're de-spamming manually. Believe me we're looking hard at spam filters (I hate cleaning 'em up).

The weird characters issue is a hassle, thanks for bringing this all to our attention.

"I would like to see a equipment review fourm, some one buys a new piece of equipment give them a place to post a short 2 min video about what they think about the product. I agree with the others, Video should be a key point in the fourms."

This is something we've been strongly in favor of, and we're going through different software solutions, either using embed codes from video sharing sites like youtube, or hosting the video on our own servers.

I think Coreece hit the nail on the head about it being very easy to loose track of specific threads. I find myself relying far too much on the "recent threads" page, and would like it to be more intuitive navigation wise.

Thanks for all of these responses, we are looking at them each week in our forum committee so keep 'em coming.

well a data base of FAQ's would be nice so that we don't get tons of questions on the same topic. there seems to be a few questions that every noobs ask and top of the list has to be what rig do I buy to start out with. then they follow up with lights mics software exc. Follow this FAQ page with a ask a question page with a form that requires them to fill in the basic information we need to answer thier question. As far as noobs being restricted, not a good idea, I was once a noob, so were you. Also they won't be ignored because of the latest post menu you have at the bottom of the fourms, please leave that in.

and Rob as always had a great idea, a Forum Etiquette page for new users, and why not make it a video clip, Videomaker has that ability and most people will watch it.

Just wanted to add that I to just normally check the "recent forums posts" section and wanted to suggest that perhaps we could make that list longer, like maybe 2 pages long and also list the section where it can be found.

Example:

2-17-09 LCD TV v.s Computer Monitor - General Questions - "created by" - "last poster" - 620 views - 20 responses - Mark as favorite

This would help keep track of the posts that we're interested and save time. Sometimes I loose track of a threads and miss replies or questions. I think having a longer recent post section will keep topics more visible allowing for more action, especially when traffic starts flowing.

I've been seeing more spam and sometimes it crowds out the recent posts....I think that sux.Â

As far as restrictive measures....I agree with Big Earl.  This site should be as newbie friendly as possible. I think it would help a great deal to have a sticky stating to list as much information as possible so people can accurately address the problem. There is just so much information especially during this digital/HD crossover and it's just hard to help when you're constantly guessing what the problem is because it could be a million different things depending on their equipment and certain symptoms.

The biggest problem with that is the newbie never gets an answer and than thinks we're all a bunch of dicks and never comes back... : (

btw....I try to only argue with the videomaker veterans, so I'm not that much of a dick. ; )

I think Rob hates me...but he's right, XD kicks HDV's ass....I can respect that.

There is a fine line between overcontrol and heavy-handed administration/moderation, censorship, and allowing the free flow of thoughts, ideas, opinions, information and debate. Videomaker is among a very few forum sponsors that has successfully walked that line.

I would hesitate to suggest restrictive measures limiting access to newbies/noobs when the very foundation of Videomaker is based on instruction, information and helpful content important to those just enterting the fold.

I also would hesitate to implement so many subject/topic categories that are so specific as to prevent at least the perusal of more general topics. It is not likely that so-called experts or long-time video people will pop in on a newbie forum. Occasionally, sure, but for the most part if too many specific forum topics thin the focus, really important topics might die of inactivity.

Personally, a more general approach, though it often results in OT posts/responses, even those hated spam marketers, is to be preferred IMHO.

How a site looks, colors/graphics used, isn't as important to me personally, as is the ease of navigation and content. While the addition of clips, images, etc. etc. might, to a degree, make some aspects of this forum more interesting to a few activists, it will likely end up cluttering the forum so much that ease of navigation and accessibilty to specific topics will take a hit. Plus I am not sure if even Videomaker has the resources to maintain/sustain both a broad, and specific, forum that could lead to participant anarchy.

I like the idea of chat. I like the idea of notification when something new has been posted to a topic or post I am following, or have responded to. I like the idea of a newbie category, but not the limiting of newbies to ONLY that for ANY period of time. I like open access, freedom of expression, and moderation only to the extent that those unable to control their attitudes, anger and abusive language are monitored and admonished.

Perhaps a healthy debate section would be in order, along the lines of a WWW cagefight approach, but the rest of the boards are doing a good job as they are. Simplification of access should be top priority. Overloading Videomaker Forums with a boatload of special stuff, that often is available or can be found elsewhere on a specific site would be redundant IMHO.

We all like to upgrade/update our looks, content, etc. on web sites, but sometimes change simply for the sake of it results in a law of diminishing returns. I might sound adverse to change, but actually I am not. I only wish that changes made were more constructive and purpose focused than they often are.

People get tired of what THEY perceive as the same old, The Chicken Dance at weddings for example, but for the people who enjoy getting out there and flapping their arms it's still fun. No forum, in my experience, regardless of the ease with which it offers archival search, can successfully eliminate the redundancy of questions, comments or posts. Often there are sufficient changes in the industry to warrant a renewal of certain questions like, what brand/model of camera should I purchase.

Like most anything available to us here, or elsewhere, we all have the option to NOT read it, post to it, or bother following.

I like the idea of the chat and the email notification. I will like to have a section of the forum that we could be able to discuss the articles that Videomaker.com have. There are a lot of articles and usually before I post in the forum I search for an article that could answer my question. Some articles are great and I will like to discuss this articles with the Videomaker community, asking them something like; Does the techniques of this articles help you?, Do you have a better way of doing it?, Do you recommend another software/hardware, etc.

Another thing is that when someone post they choose topics titles like; "Im new", "Help me", "What should I do", etc, and it should be more specific. Like many people here, I don't like this at all because it does not attract me to read it. Some topics titles I see are way good and I definitely read them, but I ignore those lame topic titles.

I visit Videomaker.com almost daily and, like Aspyrider said, the first thing I look for is the recent forum activity. I completely ignore everything else from the page. The recent forum activity should be the first thing to see when opening Videomaker.com
