FCE doesn't have Color Corrector 3-way (at least it didn't used to), it does have Color Corrector.

Â

Now here is the part I think you want to know. In the Color Corrector Tab (on the top of the viewer) look to the bottom of the viewer window you should see "Limit Effect" here you can make everything, but yellow, black and white (turn the saturation down).

Â

If FCE doesn't have this option, duplicate your video in the time line, add a Color Corrector effect to the bottom layer video, turn the saturation down in the bottom layer. Add a Chroma key to the top layer video, key out yellow, set it to invert, and ad some edge blur.

I don't have final cut express, i have final cut pro. but it's my understanding that they are very similar. This is how i would go about creating this effect, assuming you have your sequence already cut together.

Double click the clip in your timeline that you want to add this effect to. It should load into the Viewer window.

Go to Effects>Video Filters>Color Correction>Color Corrector 3-Way. A "Color Corrector 3-way" Tab should appear in the Viewer window because this filter has now been applied to the clip.

Move your play head on the timeline over the clip that is being effect. Now click on the "Color Corrector 3-way" tab in the view window. Moving the play head on the timeline over the effect clip allows you to see the changes you are making in the Canvas window since the Viewer window will be occupied by the color correction color wheels.Â

Now you should be able to play with the color wheels to adjust the color of the images. The color wheel that will effect the overall color of the images the most is the one labeled "Mids"

Videomaker also has an article about color correction. They use the interface of Final Cut for their images:Â

Another consideration is the individual atheltic video, to be used for recruiting. More than a few talented players need a highlight video of their playing career sent on to colleges in order to snag scholarships. That's another angle to consider in shooting sports highlights.

Here's the business model I'm employing after several bad experiances doing photography for smaller schoolboards, and sports teams:

Shoot the events, give out lots of business cards.

have your url on the cards with purchase info.

Always have a display showing images from previous games playing while you work.

sell your photographic images through a service such as "Photoreflect"

Sell a complilation video at the end of season. Set your price up front. set a due date for all orders. set a minimun order number, with a clause offering to refund all deposits if minimum not reached (don't kid yourself...I had one parent calling other parents from a hockey team, telling them not to order from me....told them she'd get a set of team photos from me and make copies for everybody else for less than my price. then she aske me if she could borrow some proofs to see if the quality was any good.) . Needles to say I made sure I got a minimum number of orders paid up front before releasing a single print, or disc.

have your grad/prom packages and wedding and family packages plastered all over the pages they have to wade through to order thier sports images/videos.

Â

oh yeah, if you're wondering how I found out, about the scammer, my best friends son was on the team!Â

All of that information helps a great deal.  I live in Chicago, and am hoping to hit up a few of the wealthier suburbs more and more.  Also, as an ex-college athlete & grad assistant coach, I know that schools are looking more and more for films of players.  So I'm thinking there might be a small amount of money to come from that as well.  Luckily this is purely freelance and I won't be dropping my day job.

Again thanks for the advice and help.Â

Adobe After Effects is not an image editor it is a motion graphics application with compositing features. It is industry standard in Television production for creating on air graphics. It is also used in some film workflows though is less common there due ot the proliferation of turnkey non-software systems like Flame.

Motion is Apple's motion graphics application sold as a part of FCStudio. It is a lot younger than after effects and while the latest version is pretty slick it lack much of the rich feature set and extensibility of After Effects. Basically, AfterEffects is the program the engineers who work on Motion are chasing.

To be completely honest though, when trying to do real serious compositing in my opinion neither Motion nor After Effects is the best choice. Both of these applications while they have compositing features tend to focus on the motion graphics side of things. A full featured compositing app will usually be superior to both of them. Something like Combustion or Shake will usually offer a more feature rich set of compositing tools. But to be honest you probably don't need anything that high end.

Question: Is FCP when combined with Motion as powerful/useful as AfterEffects?

Answer: No way. FCP is a great editing application and Motion is a pretty cool program for motion graphics. But the motion graphics/compositing aspects of the two really don't add up to what can be done in After Effects alone. AE is industry standard in Motion graphics because of it's flexibility and it's feature set.

Now that being said can you use a combination of FCP/Motion to achieve the effect that was initially described in the post. Yes, definately if you are using the current versions of the applications.

I have both shot and edited for networks covering sporting events.

The freelance rate is market value. The packages I have made for networks at flat rates were pre-negotiated. These consisted of cutting down highlights much like what you desribed.

If it helps, I was a cameraman for Fox Sports at 500 a day and I edited for ESPN for 75/hr in their truck or 500 a day in my studio (unsupervised). Most keep their freelance help at about 50 bucks an hour. Thats generalizing, of course.

I'm saying you won't get paid the rates of a pro videographer or editor. I can't tell you whether or not they will buy them when you're done or how much they will buy them for since I don't work at a school. That's something you'll have to discuss with them. But I feel like the money you make won't be worth while.Â

I know at the high school I graduated from, we had a video teacher who took care of shooting sports and creating a 30 minute video (each sports team had one minute of "air time") and then distributed them. That's actually how I learned to shoot and edit. So you might even come across a school where they have the work you want to do taken care of already.Â

It's a good way to get experience and create a demo reel so that maybe you can work for ESPN one day, but if you go on to do this, I wouldn't count on making a lot of money. Â

Theoretically you could probably do it in FCP. I know in Motion you can use muzzle flashes and make them 3D and rotate at the click of a mouse. That might be handy when you want to use the same muzzle flash as a previous clip, but you are now at a different angle.Â

So I have a fairly newbie type question (considering my experience in the field is extremely limited, I fit right into that category). Â I was watching a tutorial about adding muzzle flash to a gun shot. Â The editor was using Adobe After Effects. Â Although I am a designer and understand Adobe products fairly well, my video editing experience (remember, limited) is mostly in Final Cut (and some iMovie HD, but anyway). Â Can I simply use the multi-track system in Final Cut to do the same image editing as done in After Effects? Â I wish I could find the tutorial and paste the URL in here, but of course it's avoiding me right now. Â The editor basically added the muzzle flash, did some simple color correction and saturation work. Â I might even be looking for more clarification regarding the differences & similarities between Adobe and FCP....Â

Does anyone have experience shooting sporting events and editing highlight films? This is my main area of interest within this industry and plan to do it for high schools in my area. I'm basically looking for suggestions on pricing and pricing structure. I know a lot of athletic programs are hard up for cash at this point, and with some experience in the past I think I can help with this by creating highlight films that can be sold to the team members/families, etc. I had success in college creating highlight films for my team, and then selling them through the program to make money. Of course I was a student then, and the program took 100% of the profits... but does this sound like something that I can extend professionally now? I can charge for time and effort, and the sell 10 dvd's at a certain price, and the program can then sell them for more to the players and keep the difference. Any suggestions, comments?

I've read through a few posts on here, and no one has made a real cheap, solid suggestion for a video file converter.  I've seen a few free ones, such as Visual Hub (apple) and a few relatively cheap converters such as VideoZilla and Advanced X Video Converter.  Does anyone have a suggestion or a review of either of these products.

Thanks in advance

First, I'm looking for a good motion graphics program, and at this point I'm looking to get one for cheap. So that pretty much rules out After Effects. I was looking at Apple Motion on eBay... is the original version of this software so bad that it warrants the low costs of $10?

Second, does anyone have suggestions for better a motion graphics program? I'm brand new to this forum, and not a very experienced editor, but I am definitely looking into doing much more work once I get the proper software on my computer.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.
