I haven't done weddings in a while (too many bridezillas) but have shot on many carpeted surfaces with my dolly, so a good pneumatic tire dolly should be fine in most churches. If it's an outdoor wedding, you'd probably want a stabilizer instead. Seems like alot of churches I was shooting in wouldn't even allow me on the main floor and stuck me on the balcony!

The is also the option of a DIY stablizer. The Micro Filmmaker Magazine folks have several different options from around $30 up to nearly $300 to build you own. Check them out under the tips & tricks category on the free web site, http://www.microfilmmaker.com There is a homemade version of the Manfrotto Fig Rig, a gimballed steadicam version and a minimalist stabalizer. And like you'll hear from everyone about stablizers, it is more about how the operator moves than the steadicam itself. Just check out the examples provided by the DIY authors.

I came across another steadicam (that will hold a Sony DVX2000) besides the glidecam that was in the 300 dollar range but I can't find it or remember its name. Anyone know? It was one that only took a couple minutes to balance, compared to the hour you waste each time with the Glidecam. Thanks.

What about the Sticky Pod? Easy to balance, quick to adjust and so simple, it's intuitive. Call me biased, but my customers use the Sticky Pod as a steady cam on a regular basis. Of course, you can always setup your camera on your car and just idle beside your subject while on the sidewalk or in a parking lot. The camera will look like it's floating beside your subject. This dolly style setup is another great way to shoot your subject.

The best model to use is the Sticky Pod Dash Cam and a 12 inch extension. Then you'll need a small weight from WalMart or any retailer that you can slip over the extensions. You can see this setup by going to: http://www.stickypod.com/videos.html

If you have any questions, please drop me a line or give me a call.

Ozvideo, besides sounsnap, you might find interesting to check http://www.soungle.com In my opinion is way better than the first one.

As Chris said, Digital Juice has some great RF music (I have all but two of their StackTraxx volumes - there are currently 50).

DJ is running a special for a limited time - $79 for five of them which is a real steal.

StackTraxx come at least twenty songs to a volume (some more) in multiple lengths (full, 60, 30, 15 and 10 seconds).

The deal can be seen here: http://www.digitaljuice.com/enewsletter/bundles/5pak_stacktraxx.asp

Soundsnap is a good website that has free loops that you download and remix into your own song.

Digital Juice has actual songs you can download for free, or you can buy some. to get the free ones, register, login and then click on DJ Downloads at the top.

Revostock is also good, but you have to pay for them.

The first thing to consider is the weight of the camera. The heavier the camera the sturdier the tripod should be. And the sturdier the tripod the more it will cost. But here are my recommendations:Â

1. The head must be fluid head.

2.  The head must have adjustment for pan drag and adjustment for tilt drag in addition to pan lock and tilt lock.

3. Choose a tripod with a floor spreader.

4. Choose a tripod without the centre column. That centre column does not belong to a professional tripod.

5. If you can, go to the store to buy the tripod. Look at the various models and then make a selection. Look for broken parts. The material of which present day tripods are made cracks very easily.

6. A good tripod is a necessity. No use having an expensive camera with a bad tripod. Spend some money to get something good. The brand doesn't matter too much. Personally I like Sachtler, Miller and Vinten. And do buy your tripod from a genuine Video/Camera store like B&H.  You can't get a decent tripod from Walmart, Radio Shack, Best Buy etc.Â

7. Finally make sure you get the quick mount adaptor which allows quick mounting of the camera, and don't forget the carrying case.

Well its not that I want people to tell me what brand to buy. I just know absolutely NOTHING about tripod brands.

You ask me about cameras or video mics or something like that, and I know what is what. For tripods, all I know is the wal-mart brand. When I look on ebay or at stores, I am totally lost.

So thanks for all of the input on the tripods. It will certainly help me get started.

there are a lot of good brands of tripods. the things to look for in a tripod are weight, type of head, type of legs, price, maximum and minimum height and probably some other stuff too, but that's what I look at. You're already on the right track since you know to get a fluid head tripod. Look at the other characteristics as well to help decide what tripod works for you.

I know you want people to tell you specific brands, but that doesn't really matter because there are so many good brands. Look at what you need and try to fulfill your needs in a reasonable price range. Keep in mind that with tripods, you get what you pay for.Â

Glad you found a solution that works for you and the ATR55 unbalanced singnals.

For others who have balanced mics and need a camcorder XLR adapter, here's a summary of what I've found:

http://www.beachtek.com - Mounts to camera. Various passive adapters. Some with phantom and audio meter. New unit with preamp.

http://www.juicedlink.com - Mounts to camera. All include preamplifier. Options include phantom, 2-4 XLR inputs, audio meter. Lots of interesting info on website.

http://www.studio1productions.com - Doesn't mount to camera, and no phantom or preamp option. Option for 3 XLR input. Plastic case.

http://www.signvideo.com - Mounts to camera.  No phantom or preamp option. 1 and 2 XLR input options.

Ok, I went ahead and figured this out. I got a stereo headphone splitter from local Radio Shack and cut off both female ends to expose the wiring. Black red and white wires on each split.

I found that the shoulder(closest to the cable) of the 1/8" male is the common for the GS500. The tip of the male headphone adapter is the white left channel and the next slot is the red, right channel for the GS500. Also, the shoulder of the mono ATR55 is also the common with the tip of the ATR55 being the active signal.

This is the setup for the GS500 anyway.

So I got a couple female mono ends and soldered the white from one of the splits to the connection on the mono female to align with the tip of the male ATR55. On the other split, I soldered the red to align with the tip of the other male ATR55. This creates a nice way to get stereo separation onto the audio of the GS500 if you have a use for it in this configuration . And I do.

Total cost for parts about $10.00

Hope this helps someone else in the future.

good god. Surely there is an adapter cheaper than $200.00 that will accomplish this purpose???? The ATR55's are 1/8" mono males.

I appreciate the suggestion but good lord...

You'll need some sort of XLR to 1/8" adapter. I'd suggest BeachTek's DXA-2s. If you need more than two mikes then hook them to a Mackie mixer (we use the 1402-VLZ Pro) and run the XLR outputs from the Mackie into the BeachTek. The sound is impressive.

My goal is to use two ATR55 mono mics into the mic input on the side of the camera. One for left channel and one for right channel.

Does anyone know what the wiring order is for the 1/8" male plug that goes into the camera? Is it a standard order for most video cameras?? Like maybe common ground for the tip, then first connection is left channel and second from tip is right channel?

OR.... If anyone knows where I can get a stereo male to two mono female adapter, please clue me as I am just planning on making my own if there isn't such a creature.

Thanks
