Thanks to everyone! really appreciate the help. I was going for mac mini just for cost effective, but if you have to shell out the same amount as a macbook pro to get the mini up to scale. then ill just go with the macbook pro.

I don't know exactly what ill be editing yet. When I graduate ill be doing anything to make cash locally. The hope is to jump into an indie career with local Indie film producer connections I have here.

But the plan is I want a system that is semi portable, and can handle my own small scale production needs for my own projects, or small profit. and if i need any serious equipment cause I am working with a producer...I'll just rent equipment cause, it would have a budget. So I think macbook pro is all I need for now. Thanks again to everyone. You have all been a big help.

Well, I would say that the mac mini would not be powerfull for what you need to do. If you really need portabillity, go with the macbook pro. The macbook will not work well for you. I would consider the iMac pretty portable. You just bring it and a keyboard and mouse (wireless ones included) and you're set. It has a great screen and has a hard display to break (covered by plastic). I think for you the decision would come to an imac for semi portabillity, or a macbook pro for complete portabillity.

Let us know what you get and how it works for you.

I use macbooks (older ones, not the latest models) with 2 gigs ram, external firewire hd's, and an external tv/computer monitor with adaptor.

They work fine with FCE and while the macbook pro's are worth the money, the macbooks are capable.

I'd skip the mini, by the time you buy what it's missing, you'd be in macbook prices anyways....

Franko:

I have a Macbook Pro with 4 GB of RAM and I can run Premiere and After Effect without any mayor problems. In Premiere when you add color correction and among other effects the playback speed slow down a bit, but it works well. In After Effect is the same thing, the effects previews take some time to see it real time, but again you can work with it smoothly. I like the Macbook Pro a lot and the only problem is that it only have two USB ports and sometimes with some pendrives you cannot connect two USB devices at the same time because the pendrive takes too much space. This can be resolve using a USB cable extension. Two USB ports can be troublesome depending of what video production you are working, but there are many accessories that you can add up to the Macbook Pro to improve it and the OS rarely freezes. In general you will need a lot of hardrive memory and if its in your budget buy one with lots of it. I love to editing in the Macbook Pro and I have Windows on Boothcamp (it works horrible). I haven't had any regrets with the Macbook Pro.

What exactly are you going to be editing? Are you a professional videographer or a Dad looking to play with some home movies. Do you have any experience on a MAC? If you are a PC guy and are only looking at switching because apparently that is what they do in your area? Or are you switching because you really want to switch?

The nice thing about MACs is that they only have 5 different models. Granted each model has different amounts of memory/processor power/HDD space. As opposed to PC's where there are 500 different models.

MAC Pro This is the full-on pro computer probably not worth your money if you're doing home editing.

MACBook I wouldn't even bother.

iMAC This is a good desktop for the average and above average user

MAC Mini I'd say this is the desktop equivalent of the MACBook Pro. Yes they are portable but don't forget, you would also have to transport the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. So is it really that portable.

MACBook Pro If you're looking for power and portability than this is what you need. These are awesome and if you get a educational discount can be very affordable. I am a professional videographer and use mine to edit on the go. They are very fast and inexpensive to upgrade. The MAC store gave me some partner web addresses to upgrade. http://www.crucial.com/ & http://www.macsales.com/. I was able to buy a new 500GB hard drive and 4GB of memory for just about nothing as opposed to at the MAC store. Bottom line is they are fast. I would highly recommend on if you're looking for portability.

Remember, you can dual boot a MAC with Window. Or if you purchase the 3rd party application you can run Windows from inside OSX and not have to worry about dual booting.

Good luck.

I was gonna have a custom computer built for editing. But found out here in my local area, Mac is the standard everyone uses. And if it requires more, you rent it. And realized i should get a mac. I will get a nice discount due to accademic pricing on all software and computers i get. But stuck on which Mac model I should get.

I'd like to get a Mac Mini. Since I'm looking at price first. It's a desktop, but still portable if needed. But does it have the Memory, graphic and processing power to edit video with Adobe Premiere, and other Production Suite Apps? I think it does. But id like to make sure before i go out and get one.

The other option I'm looking at is a Macbook Pro. As it has the 8 gigs of memory without getting the full blown mac pro...which i do NOT have the money to get no mater how much I'd like to have it. But its a considerable price increas just to have the extra 4 gigs of memory that the Mac Mini cant have (The Macbook pro im looking at even has the same graphics card as the Mini.)

Or could i just get a plain old Macbook for full portability? does that have the power to use Production Premiere and company? Thanks to anyone who can help me

Announcing 2nd Annual FCPUG SuperMeet, Sept 13 at IBC2009

The Second Annual Amsterdam SuperMeet will be held on Sunday, September 13 at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam, Netherlands alongside the IBC2009 tradeshow. We are currently raising funds for this event and have no fear that despite the present economy and the "doom and gloom" that permeates throughout current discussion, the Amsterdam SuperMeet will draw record attendance and continue to inspire.

The Hotel Krasnapolsky is located in the heart of Amsterdam just a short tram ride away from the REI center that will host IBC2009. The hotel's not only easy to get to, but it's a beautiful venue to visit and network in.

Tickets for the Amsterdam SuperMeet will go sale online only, July 20, 2009. It is expected that the Second Annual Amsterdam SuperMeet will sell out as historically every SuperMeet sells out.

Like I believe it has been mentioned before, the company is running out of ideas....  However, I will say Time Capsule is a good feature somewhat, in that in between my backup sessions every three days or so, it's good to know that somewhere the files exist if I really need to access them.

And ever since I started really doing video, I will say that I work mostly with lights off, so I never noticed the glare/reflection problem.  But I will agree that most of their recent updates, with one or two exceptions, are mostly pointless.

actually you can thank the tree huggers for the descision to use glass and aluminum.

Greenpeace and others were pretty harsh on Apple.

That's why, the eviromental bennifits of the new hardware (materials and esp new batteries) was such a big issue in the last keynote.

http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/0901ouabdcaw/event/index.html

in the studio/office it's a non issue, as any pro should videographer/photographer should be able to figure out how to light something without getting glare off the glass, but in the feild it can be distracting. Not a deal breaker for me...

I use time capsule, I have external hds partitioned, each drive has on partition with a bootable clone of the computers hd, and a timecapsule partition on the same drive.

recovery from disaster? reboot the computer off the cloned drive and go. replace the drive in the computer and copy the cloned drive, time capsule takes care of everyday stuff, so you lose nothing.

itines genious does help when buying music for other people in the household...but little use elswise imho.

Â

I think the idea of multiple desktops is a great idea too actually. Certainly this issue of what's useless and what isn't is completely opinionated. I just think where Apple was a year ago was perfect. And now they seem to be changing things for the sake of changing things. I definitely saw no need to change the monitor. That annoys me the most. Especially since I am ready to buy a 2nd 23inch monitor, but they discontinued it. Now I've gotta look for a used one or something.Â

I hate to say it, but Apple seems "PCish" their latest ideas. The ideas are lame, pointless, and now you have to pay more money to have something work properly.

That's ironic, because since the inception of WinXP I felt PC's were getting "Macish" (as in 'artsy, pointless and expensive.)

Truth is, both companies have run out of ideas and have become so bloated with 'marketing gimmicks' and their efforts to make computing 'trendy' and 'tribal' (cue the 'I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC commercials). The PC World portion of CSE was equally lame. I wonder why Microsoft or Apple bothered to show up this year.

That is whack about paying $50 bucks for a reflection resistant coating. You would think it would just come with the unit upfront. Whether it's Apple or MS, the bottom line is all they want is your money and they'll do whatever they can to worm it out of you.

Does anyone else feel like Apple is loosing their touch?Â

Their laptop screens and new displays have a glass surface, which creates an annoying glare. My roommate just got an iMac and he said he can see himself in the screen while he's working. Apparently you can pay $50 for a reflection resistant coating or something like that, but why should someone pay more money for something as simple as not having a crappy, glaring screen.Â

They are creating pointless features. For instance, who needs this Genius thing in iTunes? Does anyone really need iTunes for find music for them?

Does anyone think Time Capsule is anything special? I mean, I've never accidently deleted something. If I need to back something up, I'll back it up myself.

I just skimmed through the MacWorld 09 video on their site and came across a point where the speaker is introducing a new feature. He sets it up my saying something along the lines of, "Have you ever tried to get a lot of work done but you keep getting interrupted by iChat or you have emails coming in? Well, we have this new feature that allows you to full-screen the application you are in (he was in a word doc.) so you can work in peace." That's such a pointless, lame idea. If I were being bother by iChat, I'd quit the program. I'd get off the internet if too many emails were coming in.Â

I hate to say it, but Apple seems "PCish" their latest ideas. The ideas are lame, pointless, and now you have to pay more money to have something work properly.

Is there a way in FCE to just list the in/out time codes and let it capture all of them at the same time?

I have been marking one, then it captures. Then I mark the next one and then it captures...etc. I usually have a shot list with the time codes listed, I just want to type them in there and then come back when it has all been done.

I hope that makes sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pretty new to editing - Quick question though

Can I add textures and/or live fonts to Live Type? I have Live Type that was bundled with FC Express 4.

I guess I can just make the overlay in Live Type, and when I put it in FCE, I can put in any background I want. That could solve my problem, but what about the live fonts. Can you add those into Live Type? Can fonts be purchased somewhere? Or are there some available for free I could use.

The live fonts that are already on there are fine, just not a lot of choices.

 Any help would be great.

Yes, Avid still works for Mac. I'm not sure about the requirements for Avid though. Have you check the website. That would be weird if they didn't list minimum requirements. In my opinion though, get FCP.Â

For an external hard drive, get one with Firewire 800 running at 7500 rpm. I would then transfer all non-essential files from the internal to the external drive and use the internal for making movies.  iMovie6 is still a great little program for making movies but I also use Final Cut Express for more complicated procedures.

I also concur with the suggestion of not buying HD camera but stick with mini-DV tape camera. If you can squeeze in a Sony VX2100 camera, you'll be set for indoor work with minimum of lighting equipment.

Best buy has a 1TB Seagate drive for around $160. I swear by Seagate.

What I did was to get one of those and buy an external encloser. Vioala! External hard drive.

Total cost was about $190 for 1TB.

Much better than buying those prepackaged 150GB external hard drives for $200.

If I were you I would invest in the final cut express software to get you started.  It is cheap, and actually pretty powerful software.  As a beginning editor you will focus most of your efforts learning about basic cuts, fades, and the timing of editing.  Final cut express will be able to handle all of the basics, and that way you won't be tempted to waste tons of time one things you don't really need to be doing right now. As for a hard drive, I too would recommend a lacie.  I just picked up a 750 GB disc with eSata, firewire800, usb, and firewire400.  I am currently using it on my macbook pro editing HDV in FCS2.0 and it works great.  Keep up the hard work, your laptop will be a great editing system for you.

Thanks

Well, your computer set up is fine. It's definitely good enough for DV and probably HDV too, although, i wouldn't jump into HD. It's too soon, theres no point, and it won't enhance your learning process of video in anyway. Learn the basics of video with DV first; save yourself the money.Â

Since you are a student, you can get the student version of Final Cut Studio 2 for like, $700, which is super cheap. The only difference between that and the regular version is that it won't be able to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 3, which won't be for a long time anyway.Â

To answer your questions about the external drive, I've had a 250GB LaCie drive since 2005, and have never had a problem with it. It would be a good idea to have 2 separate hard drives, however, I doubt you'll need a second 1TB hard drive for general school work and everyday things. I would expect 100GB to be plenty.Â

 Hello everyone,

I am a new film student (as of now I have only taken theory classes, and yet to take a production class). I am thinking of buying an external hard drive. It has been a really long time since I have touched anything in relation to film or video editing so I am pretty ignorant to alot of the technology as well as the jargon.

I really want to get more into video editing. Unfortunately, due to lack of funds, I have to buy my system in stages, little by little, and cannot afford to have 1 system dedicated solely to editing (for now). So for the time being my laptop will be used for everday stuff as well as learning editing and fufute student video projects. Here are my computer details:

Laptop - Apple MacbookPro 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4G DDR2 SDRAM, and 250G Hard drive, running OSXÂ 10.5.

For now I only have iMovie, but eventually plan on buying Final Cut Pro. So for now I am looking for recommendations on an external hard drive. I know I want at least 1 terabyte of storage. I am also wondering If it is recommended to get 2 separate external hard drives - one for my media, and 1 for everyday stuff. In all I'd like to keep my costs down under $600.

As I am new to all of this any comments on what I need or should be thinking about would be welcome, and all advice would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance,
