I have this happen on occasion to. It just comes down to a timecode error on the tape and there is nothing you can do about it.

I use a separate (cheap) camera (Samsung cheapo) to download my tapes (so I don't wear out head on expensive Cams). Sometimes, this problem will occur on one camera (Cheapo cam) so I will put it in another camera (Sony VX2100) and it will get hung up on the same spot.

Sometimes, it just happens. Just fastforward a couple seconds past that scene and continue capturing from there.

What I've done a couple times is to use WinDV (free app) http://windv.mourek.cz/ on PC and download the video to PC in AVI then just transfer it to the MAC.

Usually when I do this, the timecode does not error out. I think because this program isn't so timecode oriented like FCP is. Either way, it works. If all else fails and you absolutely must have the 1 or 2 seconds that it is skipping.

Good luck

I see. My laptop does have a firewire input already. I just thought that you needed a video card to capture the video. I guess maybe it's just the software that does that. I really appreciate the input. Time to start editing!

>>hanks for the input. Basically my reason for this question, is my laptop doesn't have a video card. Thus nothing to capture the video with. and it has no room for expansion for an internal video card as far as I can tell...thats why I was looking for an external capture device.<<

Video doesn't have to be captured through a capture card. If it is a PC laptop with a PCMCIA slot there are firewire adaptors that you can get to fit it. Thus allowing you to have capture capability.

I'm not sure what you mean by a video card to capture with. What you want is a firewire input (just a connection, not video card related).

If your laptop doesn't already have a firewire input, but it does have a PCMCIA slot, I think you'll want to look into one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=firewire+pcmcia&x=0&y=0

Then you can capture straight from the firewire port on the camera to your laptop.

Just the the fun of it, I went to B&H Photo and looked over their products. They have only two options for use with a laptop for less than $500. Pinnacle has one device (but two bunldle options) that has the 6-pin Firewire 400 port for digital I/O and the usual analog inputs for AD conversions. And Creative Labs has a larger device that uses a 4-pin Firewire 400 port for digital I/O and the same set of analog inputs.

So far as I can tell, the main difference between the devices is the Pinnacle interface will capture and output AVCHD and HDV vide, while the Creative Labs device is only for standard definition video. The Creative Labs bundle includes a 4-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable and Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 for enticements list price of $199. The $120 Pinnacle device includes an unidentified version of their Studio software.

Now for the opinion part of your question. Although I have no actual experience with either device, I already have my preferred NLE on my laptop (and desktop) so I can't see spending $80 to get Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0. Besides, the Pinnacle device would let me capture HD video in two formats. But from comments on other forums (and reviewing on-line manuals), the Pinnacle Studio NLE uses an interface unique to itself. So, since I already have a fine NLE, I would opt for the less expensive Pinnacle device and not install their NLE. But if I didn't already have an excellent NLE, I would opt for the Creative Labs bundle with the industry standard interface of Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 (provided I'm not planning on going to HD video in the next two or three years.)

And in closing, I would like to say that so far as reputations go, both manufacturers are equal. It is only in the software that I perceive and difference. That being said, perhaps our other users could add any good or bad experiences they've had with either or both products.

im not exactly sure what you're talking about because I just go strait from my deck to computer through firewire, but i think what you're thinking of is something made by Convergent Design. They make good stuff.

If you're recording to miniDV, there's no reason to get one of those boxes though. Firewire is the best way to capture.

You haven't mentioned if you've done this with with any other camcorders, so you know the process works. Nor did you mention which of the myriad of settings to record video you have & haven't attempted. And it isn't clear when your device error occurs. Is it being recognized by Windows? Is it recognized by Movie Maker? Exactly what were you doing before it errored out? You say you were attempting to upload video, did you actually mean capture video? Uploading & capturing are handled by completely different software systems.

So I can't tell you anything unless you can describe the problem. If I were you, I would error on the side of more information than you think we need. But I can confidently say it has nothing to do with not using Sony software. I connected one of my Sony's through the Firewire port. But I'd already started Movie Maker! And it instantly recognized the camera as I plugged it in. So my Windows XP SP2 handled everything perfectly while running on the Sony VAIO it came preinstalled on. What are you doing different?

Well it appears that your camcorder is not designed to function as a web cam. While doing my research I noticed JVC mentions several programs to maximize you camcorder's utility. If they are of no help (my first guess) you'll have to create a work around. You are planning on doing a stop motion animation. So you can still shoot still frames which you can transfer to your animation program. If you can't do animate still frames, then you will be down to using the best web cam you have available to get the image into your animation program.

So you are right about not being able to change your USB setting in your camcorder. While I was right about the device telling the computer what kind of device it is. But now we both know something new. And I hope you find a suitable solution.

In order to get recognized as a camera & not a mass storage device, you have to change a setting on the camcorder. USB devices with different uses have to be preset to the desired mode before connecting it to the USB port. It is most likely to be in a settings menu. But the easiest way to find it might be to look up USB in the index (at the back) of your user manual.

Have fun & don't panic. You'll be rolling in no time. By the way I assumed you don't have a Firewire port on your computer. Because that's the easier & generally higher quality way to connect a camcorder to a computer.

Hello, I am panicking indeed, since my HDD-Camera (JVC Everio GZ-MG140) is not recognized by Pinnacle, or any other program that I've tried for that matter...
When I connect the USB-cable, Windows identifies it as being a USB Mass Storage, and I can easily access it as one, it is when trying to enter the Capture Feature of a program, that it fails to comply, giving messages as "No Input" etc.

Would anyone happen to know what could be wrong? And if so, what I can do about the problem. (I really need this to work, in order to make a stopmotion movie)

You may have an issue with timecode breaks on your tape, these can cause a capture to abort depending on the setting you are using. A timecode break is usually caused when you stop a tape and rewind it to check what you have just shot and then restart the shooting from a point after the tape had been recorded on. You end up with duplicate timecode.

I believe you can have FCP ignore the tapes timecode and capture or just dubbing the tape can fix timecode breaks.

Digitizing real time video is a processor intensive operation that doesn't allow for much else to go on. So you're not going to find one that can record three streams at once. Not to mention that you'll only have one DV video input available on any given computer (generally a Firewire/IEEE 1394 input) and digitizing software only expects one video feed. So you are going to need three recording devices. But they don't have to be computers.

I'll just mention in passing that you could use videotape to record and digitize it later. But going direct to disc will give increased quality and speed up the post-production process. Now I'm going to assume your cameras are all feeding line signals to your control room. This means you will require a device to turn the video stream into a digital stream. These are available at reasonable prices from a variety of manufacturers (Pinnacle comes to mind.) And you'll need one for each computer.

In the past couple of years, another option has become available. You can now purchase stand alone DVR's that have AV inputs and a way to connect it to your computer. One of your church members may have one already so you could try it out. And there are also stand-alone direct-to-disc DVD recorders that can record from AV inputs. In terms of required space, DVD recorders need the least while multiple computers require the most. Keep that in mind if space is at a premium. And be sure to set the record quality at the max to get the most from your recordings. And don't forget to record your audio so you can easily synch your shots in post.

Good luck with your project. And feel free to contact me if you'd like to get tips for shooting & editing three camera field productions. I've been teaching the techniques for more than 15 years (and using them for over 20 years.) Such as, use your wide/cover shot to record master audio so the sound is continuous & consistent. The audio on the close-up cameras is essential for visually synching the shots to the master audio. And many, many more tips to make a top notch show in short order. (Hint, it's all about planning.)

And remember, have fun with the project!

I've been fooling with audio and video for along time in more of a amature setting, but I'm now undertaking the design process for a post production "studio" for my church. We are looking at 3 remote PTZ cameras to cover the worship center. We want to capture 3 seperate feeds and do a post production to better edit the service. But we also want to do our capture and edit via computer. Will I need 3 computers and 3 capture devices, or one computer 3 captures. What is the best way to record the 3 feeds?

Well I happen to import footage from an XL2 to FCP at school about every day so I do have "advice." The times I've had that same "looking for timecode" message are first when the frame rate changes during capture. For me this happens when someone else switches the frame rate during recording "for the heck of it." :( I don't like those people. Anyway, is there any way you may have accidentally switched frame rates from one shot to another? If not I think even prolonged gaps in the tape during capture cause something to cease up. Either way I send a few choice words to the XL2 for doing this.

Also, what brand tapes are you using for the ZR25MC? I honestly don't know and may sound like a n00b for this, BUT I own a panasonic gs300 camcorder and FUJIFILM tapes cause noise noise noise NOISE...not much unlike this: $&%(#$(%$%%()^%*&*)!$!^*$*%^$*#%*)!#$)%!*%!*&gs300?!*#*%!%*()!screwyourquality!!*()#!%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you use fujifilm tapes then I suggest panasonic from now (or forever hold your peace) on.

I will use the example of a Canon HV30, which is a great "consumer" camcorder for less than $1000. It has the ability to shoot in 24p for the "film look" as well as shoot in 30p, which is great for posting things on the web.

Still shots from that camera are only measured at around 2.96 megapixels, and will look good. They will not look as good as pictures from a 12 megapixel camera.

To answer your question, yes it is possible to take still photos from video that you have shot, but as mentioned, it is recommended to get it from progressive footage instead of interlaced.

Thanks, John. I haven't looked into the HD camcorders much yet. I take it that you can set it to tape in progressive mode?

well, you can get better resolution from HDV rather than DV, but that resolution is based on how well your camera is and how you shoot. you would want to make sure that you are video taping in progressive format to eliminate interlacing.

I have a nice Nikon D50, but you cannot hold and shoot two cameras at once and video is VERY important of the shows. I'd like to be able to take stills from those videos to use.

why spend money on HD, why not get a decent digital SLR and use the digital picture, no issues with interlacing....

I breed, train and sell horses. A good action shot is very important for ads. I usually try to capture stills of the right moment from my videos. But, of course, quality is not good when capturing from interlaced DV. Would the captured stills be any better if they were captured from HD video?

Trying to decide whether to buy HD camcorder for this purpose.

curious as to why you didn't hook up through firewire....., that's the best and most stable way to capture to your computer

ok,

several times Ive rented XL2's and tried to firewire capture the footage into FCP / Mac Pro. it will be working for some time, then stop all of a sudden.

other times I get "looking for timecode"

otehr times I use ZR25MC camera - usually have pretty good luck with it a s deck but it sometimes stops in the middle of capture as well.

Ive tried "non controllable device" and some other settings but always have some problems capturing.

is it FCP or Mac pro or ME?

PS, ZR25MC has some sort of pixelation going on on the right side. Dont know if this is from taping over something else but its right through the tape. Ive tried a head cleaner but no difference. Suggestions?
