I own a small video production company that does event videography, training videos, and web advertisements. I do all my editing on the HP HDX using Vegas Pro 8 and Architect 5.0. It is a laptop in name only - 20 inch screen, 4gig ram, duo core 2.4 processors, (2) 160 gig drives and a dual layer, dual format, (lightscribe -worthless) burner. This might be more than you need, but you certainly won't be disappointed. Here is the cnet review http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-pavilion-hdx/4505-3121_7-32442902.html?tag=vid.1&autoplay=true

I think you are right, Because its kind of a hassle working with VHS. Right now im working on a project. i've come down to my last 5 tapes. And this one tape has a bug, it won't let me record past two hours. No matter how hard i try it won't let me. I've tried everything and waisted 6 light scribed disks and 14 hours of time for the machines to work on it. thats 14 hours that could be spent sucessfully converting VHS. Yet this is where the Hard drive part of it comes into play. I guess i could just record it to the hard drive so the system sees how long it is. Thus NOT stopping at the 2 hour mark.

I did a quick look up of that, and it does aparently have a built-in TBC, but it doesn't say if it's a true full frame one or not (my guess is not). I'm also not seeing if this is a true SVHS deck...

It seems like a high quality unit for someone converting VHS in their home, but for a pro I would think a dedicated proc amp and full frame TBC. I could be wrong though... I've only dabbled in this stuff myself and never had to deal with any old, worn out VHS tapes.

Hi, I wanted to to show everybody an Amazing way to convert VHS to DVD. I use a machine called the Panasonic DMR-EH75V. Its an amazing system and it works like heck. It records Progressive scan and is completely customizable. It also has an HDMI output. The thing is also a DVR. So you can record tapes, DVD's, and live TV to the DVR then do anything you want with it. Like put it on a VHS (not recommended for "state of the art people") And slap it on a DVD. By the way You can creat menus and Edit out commercials for things recorded from the tv. It also has an S VIDEO in and out, RCA inputs and a four prong IEED (firewire) input for recording directly to DVD.

One bad thing, It costs around $300. But if you do full time videomaking for money it will pay for itself. You can also get it off ebay for mondo cheap prices. I recomend getting as many as possible for faster burning, because it is real time and you need to wait for the tape to play all the way through. I like to set up a little studio with multiple copiers lined up with cheap, small tv's or monitors on top of them.

What do you guys think of this? Do you think its worth it? if anyone owns one tell us about it?

There should be no reason they can't. They would be nearly worthless without the capacity to copy any non-copy protected DVD. But if you're worried, ask before you buy it. And I hope you've already decided the expense of a duplicator tower is worth it. I always felt the hour or two spent duplicating while I watched TV wasn't worth the money to buy any sort of duplicator.

I feel like I am niave for even asking this question.

I currently make video slideshows and burn each individual one on my computer. More and more I have been asked to make 5-7 copies. It seems like it is taking too much time and I was going to invest in a DVD tower duplicator which I could do 3-5 per time.

My questions are, do those duplicators make a true dvd with a menu? Can I hook it up directly to my computer and burn right from my software which is Sony DVD Architect? I know this is a very vague question.

Thanks.

Is there anyone out there that uses DVD Studio Pro 4 without problems viewing on LCD PAL TV. When using the templates both the text and stills are grainy or pixelated. As a test I created a movie and stills in FCP imported them into DVDSP, the movie quality superb, the text and stills for the menus - rubbish. I then used the same content in iDVD - perfect menus. It is really annoying when you invest in Pro software and the results aren't as good as you get with a freebie!
Is there something obvious I am doing wrong? Or is it that Apple is basically NTCS and I am on PAL in the UK?

To avoid the running and bleeding of regular (non-Aqua Guard) inkjet printable media try using a product called CD/DVD Guard. I have used it with excellent results. Once the disc is dry from printing, you apply the product with a few light coats and that’s it. The application process is similar to spray painting and like any other chemical, there are handling precautions but it works like a charm. I actually ran my test disc under the faucet and then tried to smear it with my finger and the image stayed completely in tact. The web site is http://www.cddvdguard.com/ .Good luck,

Hi Film Balance,

I know this is a late post, but better late than never, eh?

One of the detriments to inkjet printing on discs surfaces is that the ink will run or bleed if it gets wet. So, say if you are working on a disc like a wedding DVD and it must last forever for that client, they might get upset if they spill their morning coffee on the disc 10 years from now and the great picture on the disc turns to mush.

The aqua guard has a special surface that will accept the ink and make it more permanent and resistent to bleeding when wet. I have not had much experience with these types of discs, since we moved our inkjet to Rimage Everest printing, but try a few of the discs and if the printing looks good and the image doesn't bleed, I would say that is real value over the conventional discs, even at an elevated disc cost.

Not a problem. I have heard the aftermarket ink for epson isn't bad. I have not tried it but I feel I will soon. The site that was mentioned was www.Supermediastore.com . I read about it on that same forum, just search for epson ink and you will find the thread. They admit it doesn't last quite as long but the price still makes it worth it. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. I'll have to try your suggestions when my replacement printer arrives. I only wish the Epson ink wasn't so expensive. When I looked for replacement cartridges before my print nozzles died, I saw the cost to replace all of the T078 cartridges ranged from 50-70 dollars. I guess the problem is that I'm used being able to refill the printer cartridges.

Alukahn,

I have been using an Epson R220 for over a year now and I am happy with it. The photo printing (Paper) is far from high res but it's not bad either. The images you get on the disc are great though. It all depends on how clear your source image is but it will give you a true copy of your image. The software that comes with it (Epson Print CD) is kind of basic but it imports photos and can add text, shapes and backgrounds. I am sure there is better software but this has done the job so far. Two things about Epson from my research that may help you; I have heard that you should not turn the printer off. Every time you turn it back on it cycles through the ink and eats up a bit resulting in frequent cartridge replacement. I have also read that it has a built in expiration date of 2 years. No matter how well it is performing, once you hit the two year mark it shuts down. If you go to http://weddingvideodoneright.com/index.php/weddding_videographer_forums and do a forum search for Epson Printers you will see both the issue and the solution to it. I have not had to use the solution because I am at about month 13 so I can not verify if it works. Regardless, I paid about 80 bucks for the printer and I would by another Epson if this one died tomorrow. I would bump it up to an all in one but I would definitely get one that prints to CD's & DVD's. Also, I use a protection spray http://cddvdguard.com/index.htm once the ink has dried to keep it from smudging. It seems to work well but I haven’t purposely tried to smudge them. I hope this helps you.Cole

I'm looking to buy an inexpensive printer that prints onto DVD's. I don't print a lot, so speed isn't as critical for me. Quality should be good, but doesn't have to be perfect. I'm thinking about the HP C5280, but I've seen wildly different reviews. I know most recommend the Epsons, but I've had issues with my RX595 clogging and can't afford the ink (I'm actually waiting on a replacement from Epson). I've read that the Pixma's are good, but given my experience with Epson am not crazy about internal printheads. Does anyone have any long-term experience with HP or any suggestions as to another DVD capable printer?

I was a little confused as to what you are asking. Are you trying to copy a file from a DVD Rom (with files) or from a DVD video?

For DVD Rom (files):
All you have to do is drag it and drop it from the folder to the desktop, or where ever you want it to go. Same on Mac and PC. That's pretty much it.

For DVD (Video Disc):
Unfortunately you're not going to get much of a step by step because there are so many different ways to do it.

1st: is this a professional DVD (ie, Disney, Paramount, Universal) or a homemade DVD such as from a DVD camcorder.

If it is a DVD camcorder, the easiens way is to finalize the disk and use something like DVD decryptor to download them to your computer. (Note: I say DVD decryptor because it downloads the entire file system from the DVD).

2nd: Unfortunately, step two is a little more difficult. You will have to find a program that convert the DVD files to mpeg or avi files. Unfortunately they are difficult to find fully free. usually they have a 5 min. restriction or are not free. There is a website that allows you to upload your videos and it will convert them and email you back so that you can download the conversion. I will see if I can find the site and post it here.

Now if you are trying to download a pro DVD, you may have trouble doing so because of the copyright restrictions on the disc. But since that is illegal I will not walk you through that.

I'd say copy the stuff from the DVD onto your harddrive and then upload to youtube. If the DVD stuff is too big, you may need to import it into a editing software and render it with some compression. If the DVD stuff is less than 500MB and you don't want to rerender, than upload to vimeo.com rather than youtube.

i would suggest that you encode your project to the dvda mpeg stream first and render an ac-3 audio file from vegas and import those into dvda. if anything has to be recompressed in dvda, it will take longer. Also, rendering to a seperate drive that where the files are located will help with speeds. my setup is a 250 gig system drive, 250 gig file drive for captures, pictures and an external drive for dvd file renders.
