One other option to capture the DVD is to use some kind of DVD ripper program. iSkysoft has inexpensive software available to create various files from all or part of a DVD. I use it regularly, and the quality seems to be better than capturing with an NLE. You might even be able to avoid using an NLE at all.

Hi Steve -

Legally you're not allowed to work with footage you don't have the rights to - however if you bought the DVD and want to copy sections for personal use only, I don't see anyone coming after you.

You might find someone willing to do that for you but you could do it yourself - Get a non-linear editor (NLE) on your computer (Sony Vegas, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premier, Apple Final Cut, etc.. - all good ones), capture the clips you want, place them on the timeline, render out to MPEG-2, burn to a DVD and viola. It really is not very difficult.

I don't have time right now for more details but if you look around on these forums you'll find some excellent tips.

Hi birdcat, thanks for your reply. Basically i have a wildlife dvd (a genuine dvd i bought in the shop) and i want to cut some scenes out of the dvd and upload them onto the computer. Then ideally i want a large flat screen monitor (completely seperate of the computer) and somehow to be able to send one of the wildlife scenes from the computer to the flat screen monitor. Otherwise maybe just use a USB memory stick and transfer data from computer to flat screen that way.

Would you know about any of this birdcat? I would really appreciate any advice you could offer me. My email address is stevekerr101@hotmail.com

Thanks in advance. Steve.

Actually you may be able to buy Encore separately... I did on eBay. Make sure, however, that you are not buying a pirate copy or a fake. You also didn't mention that Encore is a bit of a task to learn.

you do not give too much details. But for burning a dvd with Movie Edit Pro, I think one thing must be figured out. The one you are specifically interested in is the "Disc images:" path. This is the folder where MEP creates the actual DVD disc images during encoding. It then burns those images to your DVD.
As an extra note, MEP never automatically deletes these images, which means they will eventually fill up your HDD. Believe me, I learned this the hard way. After I'm sure my DVD plays correctly, I always go back and delete those files.Hopefully, this solves your problem.

If you're using DVD authoring software, edit/import the video in its original format. The software will do the encoding for you. Nearly one hour of HQ (High Quality) video will fit on a standard-sized (4.7 GB) DVD. The time specs for HQ might be slightly different - e.g. 57 minutes, so one hour of video could mean two minutes more or two minutes less. Some software gives a Smart Fit option, which adjusts the quality so that it fits perfectly on the DVD's capacity. If you don't have this, you will have to choose SP (Standard Play).

I usually export a Quicktime movie & write it to IDVD, it works fine. But now it keeps telling me the video is too large (10Gb). How do I get an hour video onto a DVD to watch on TV then??

Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for all your replies.I am submitting to a contest in Singapore. Also, we were planning on making something for the Chicago underground film festival for next year.Their guidelines - 1/2" (standard VHS in either NTSC or PAL/SEACAM formats) videocassette or NTSC DVD. I had a vhs camcorder before and I used imovie for editing. This is my first HD camcorder and hence the confusion.

Also, I got the camcorder from BestBuy and could swap it for a Canon HV30. Should I stick to AVCHD or go with the HD MiniDV. Any suggestions as to which is better?

what program do you use to edit? The new Adobe CS4 collection comes with an encoder that will transcode just about any format into any other. I would look for a video converter that you can specify the framerate and image size and go from therre.

First off thanks for taking the time to read through my question. I am a noob to video editing and so pardon my ignorance. I own a HD camcorder (Sony HDR SR11) that records in the AVCHD format.

I made a documentary for a contest that requires submission in - "standard VHS in either NTSC or PAL/SEACAM formats". I am not sure how to convert my HD video to these formats. How would I approach this? Would I be getting better quality with a (cheaper?) SD camcorder rather than trying to downconvert the HD video?

Also, if I need to burn the HD video onto a regular DVD so that it plays on non-hd televisions - how would I approach that?

Any help would be appreciated.

I tend to deinterlace my footage, mainly because I like the look better (okay, I actually shoot with cameras that allow me to record deinterlaced, which is the best way to go in my mind).

If you're seeing these stripes only on your TV, then you may be encoding something improperly. You say that you're in Europe. If you're shooting or editing footage in NTSC, then playing back the footage on a PAL device might be causing some of your issues. Make sure that you render everything in PAL format.

Can you send a screenshot or photo of what it's doing on the screen. Stripes can be a lot of things, from misformatting as I mentioned, to dirty heads on your camera. IF we could see it, it might help to diagnose the issue.

I'm not very familiar with Sony Camcorders, but from a little bit of research, I figured out that yours is an HDV (High Definition Video) camcorder shooting in standard definition. What SD quality are you shooting in? Depending on the length of your video, you'd probably want to export in HQ (high quality) with Dolby Digital audio if these settings are available. This is what my editing software uses.

When I make my DVD I render in Main Concept MPEG-2 with the template in DVD NTSC Video Stream. I had never had any problems with the rendering, besides the ridiculous long time it takes (because of my computer) but the quality of the DVD is pretty good. Since you record in PAL you will need to set the template to DVD PAL or DVD PAL separate stream. Don't forget to do this because if you choose NTSC as a template your frames and video resolution will not be the same and it will damage the quality. Then go to a DVD creation software and make an awesome DVD menu.

Another thing, the quality will look good on a computer, but not necessarily in a DVD player. It depends on the television that its used. I had this problem in a previous shortfilm I make, I edit it in a 1920X1080 HDMI monitor and it look good and all, but when the movie was shown in projector WOW...... some of the colors look bad and some scenes had excesive brightness... well what can we do, all movies will look different in TV and projectors. Keep this in mind, but you should have a good quality of DVD in general.

Thanks Don. That's exactly what I mean. So you're suggesting that my video is downgraded when it's burned and quite possibly further degraded when played back on a regular DVD player. I thought about Apple TV, but I want tp be able to store my video and therefore the Bluray route is the better option - assuming that that is the problem in the first place. More expense!! Cheers

by dreadful do you mean "DVD" quality?

if so..

try an Apple tv, or get a blueray burner and player.

I have a Sony SR11 which I love, and I especially like the quality of the hi-res image(1080 x 1960) it produces when viewed on my 42" Sharp Aqueous, but no matter what i've tried when edited and burned to DVD to play on my DVD player the quality is dreadful. I'm using iMovie on a Mac. Can someone take me through the process that gets me the results I'm looking for.

Good question! (RE: Cyberlink section in these forums)

I'm not sure what you mean by "flip over". Do you want to have the video rotate horizontally or vertically? Or do you want the layers to flip (one video is "on top", then the other is "on top")?

Why is there no separate section devoted to Cyberlink?
