One other option to capture the DVD is to use some kind of DVD ripper program. iSkysoft has inexpensive software available to create various files from all or part of a DVD. I use it regularly, and the quality seems to be better than capturing with an NLE. You might even be able to avoid using an NLE at all.

Hi Steve -

Legally you're not allowed to work with footage you don't have the rights to - however if you bought the DVD and want to copy sections for personal use only, I don't see anyone coming after you.

You might find someone willing to do that for you but you could do it yourself - Get a non-linear editor (NLE) on your computer (Sony Vegas, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premier, Apple Final Cut, etc.. - all good ones), capture the clips you want, place them on the timeline, render out to MPEG-2, burn to a DVD and viola. It really is not very difficult.

I don't have time right now for more details but if you look around on these forums you'll find some excellent tips.

Hi birdcat, thanks for your reply. Basically i have a wildlife dvd (a genuine dvd i bought in the shop) and i want to cut some scenes out of the dvd and upload them onto the computer. Then ideally i want a large flat screen monitor (completely seperate of the computer) and somehow to be able to send one of the wildlife scenes from the computer to the flat screen monitor. Otherwise maybe just use a USB memory stick and transfer data from computer to flat screen that way.

Would you know about any of this birdcat? I would really appreciate any advice you could offer me. My email address is stevekerr101@hotmail.com

Thanks in advance. Steve.

The short answer is yes you will be able to add a voice over in sony vegas.

You can always delete the audio track in your editing software. I always use my mic even if I don't want the sound. You never know when the adudio portion may come in handy.

I am using a GL2, and am filming an educational video which will have much of the footage voiced over with narration. Because of this, I filmed the footage so far (2 days worth) with the mic adapter connected to the mic input on the camera, but I did not connect the mic to the adapter (being a complete newbie, I thought for some reason this would be better than having sound generated from the GL2's mic). My question is, with what I have done so far, will I still be able to add the narration (i am using Sony Vegas)? Second question - is it better to film the way I filmed so far, or film with the sound from the GL2's mic?

you can use "preset" in Adobe Premiere not only it can present the same effect but also it has time saving capability. Find Effect presets in the Effects window (Window --> Effects). The Presets folder in the Effects window contains several subfolders. You can choose one which fit for your video clips, and all the video clips will have the same effect.

Copy the clip that has the effects you want to apply to other clips (Edit/Copy) and then select the clips that you want to add the effects to and right click on the clips and choose Paste Attributes. This will paste all of the effects from the copied clip, and I mean ALL of them.

I'm very new to this process, but I have recently begun making films with Adobe Premiere Elements, and I'm having trouble with the editing process. I have all the clips I want in the correct order, but I was wondering if there was anyway to take the effects (color correction, shadow/highlight alterations, etc.) from one clip and copy them to the others? When I try to do it manually, they are always slightly different, so when it progresses from one clip to the next, there is a noticeable change in the quality of the clip. I want all the clips from one scene to have the same feel and tint to them - is there anyway I could do this? Please help!

I consider myself very versed in Pinnacle, having used it since V8. I have done the multicam editing, but haven't used more than 2 cameras to be edited. I planned on having 3 at a wedding, but it was an outdoor wedding and the one unmanned camera had the sun drop down to a bad position and the angle was unusable. The 2 manned cameras worked very well and I was able to edit them in Pinnacle V11 with no problem. Since they were both MiniDV, I used a clapper just after both cameras were turned on and left them on. Once I synched the clap, no problem. Just used the sound from the camera closest to the action and even with the wind, it didn't turn out too bad. The bride, groom and very unpleasant sister of the bride were very pleased with the results.

I also did a school play with 2 angles. Same thing. Stacked them in Pinnacle, synched up the clapper and no problem.

I agree with you. I really like Pinnacle but have had minor problems everyone complains about. The only main issue now is with the menu quality in version 12, and I too would like to have more video tracks. But I think the program is great and certainly easy to use.

I have downloaded the trail version of Sony Vegas and it shows promise. Not as intuiative of a transition as I thought it was going to be from Pinnacle. But it does give you I believe 4 video tracks. I am also taking a stab at Avid Liquid. That is an even harder transition. I assumed this program would have been Pinnacle Studio on steriods. It looks completely different from Pinnacle and even more difficult than Vegas.

And I consider myself an advanced user of Pinnacle.

I currently use Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate. The only version I had any trouble with was V10. Since then, no troubles.

I recommend stacking the videos and muting the sound from the bottom track once they are synced up. I have done this before and never had any trouble.

I am not sure why some dislike Pinnacle. Outside of v10, I have had very few problems and have produced everything from TV commercials, sports highlight videos, weddings, memory videos, etc. I would like to see more tracks, but that is my only issue. As long as you have a good computer that will handle the requirements, it works great.

The reason I brought up the type, cut and paste, is some people think better, or even sometimes they are here, read, then later think of something they want to say and write it in another program, then do the TCP thingy. I do it a lot because I am comfortable with doing it, but I type on the fly as well, so I hammer down where ever I see a blank space that needs filled :-)

Rob, do you often write out your responses in a word processing program, then copy and paste? That is one thing I think of that could be happening, and yeah, it is totally irritating to attempt to read between the html lines - I'd almost rather delete it and type in the reply box - if indeed you are typing elsewhere first.

By the way I agree with Coreece - learn both, really - and ignore Jay, but he won't go away. I think he still uses linear AB roll syle editing :-)

"Start with final cut first....if you start with Avid, you'll never want to leave." Really? That's interesting. I've heard many people say Avid editors will have a easier time learning FCP while FCP editors will have a hard time learning Avid. Seems to hold true - at least in my experience. I learned FCP first and have no desire to try Avid again. The interface made no sense to me when I took an Avid class. All the people I know who use both programs seem to have started with Avid.

When it comes down to it though, both Avid and FCP do the same thing - they cut the video, but here are some key difference I've heard:

One thing I hear a lot is with FCP, you have to keep track of your media at all times. You really have to make sure you are organized. With Avid, I heard it takes care of all that for you. You can keep editing and Avid knows where to put your stuff if you import more media half way through a project. When you buy Avid though, all you get is Avid. I don't believe you get a software bundle like you do with Final Cut. So with Final Cut you basically get a complete digital studio for $1200 while $2500 will get Avid...just Avid.

Something I heard recently is that Avid still seems to be dominant out west while FCP seems to have taken over NYC, Philly, Pittsburgh, DC - the north east.

And finally, I hate to say it, but if you have Avid on your resume, employers will probably take you more seriously. See, FCP is pirated all the time. That doesn't really happen with Avid. So there are all these people running around who THINK they're editors because they have FCP when really they are nothing more than people with FCP. So I feel like knowing Avid will help you separate yourself from that crowd, which I recommend. Those people are annoying.

(by the way, has anyone else ever come across "videographers" who think they can shoot because they know how to point there camera at something? If you want to kill yourself, try editing that footage.)

Anyway, those are some things to think about. Best thing to do is learn both, but unfortunately we can't all learn everything at once. Pick one to start with. From there, learn how to use it efficiently before learning the other. Most importantly, learn what editing actually is. It's one thing to know how to use the tools, but if you don't know how to use them to tell a story, you're SOL.
