The guys who have posted here are right - ya gotta pay your dues, learn the ropes, gain experience, ect. BUT...

...I'm also a believer in, forgive the cliche, "True Grit" and the benefits of someone who toughs it through to get the door of opportunity open. No, you don't want to leap into a sea full of sharks (and that is what it can seem like at times in the video business) but you can test the waters, ease into action, then start kicking into higher gears as you develop the necessary skills.

Some people are too inclined, too often, to spend too much time paying for a education, researching the next best thing and putting off ANY forward action. That is not everyone's way. Some do it dumbly by jumping in on an emotional whim, others do it smartly by cashing in on the practical reasoning their left-side brain provides but they often lack perception from their creative (if any) right side. There are a boatload of folks who sense the opportunity, know their limitations (mentally, emotionally, physically and fiscally) but are willing to intelligently "jump in" depending somewhat on the "luck" and lightning strikes that might occur.

So, while there are a bounty of practical ways to approach this business - and the above "pay your dues" approaches are a reasonable suggestion - there are also elements, voices and strengths within you that might push you harder toward jumping in.

I was impressed (and still am) with the story of Lee Stranahan, former renown Video Toaster guru who, with the support of his working wife took a year off from making money to delve into and learn the NewTek system that was wowing the Amiga community with its video editing capabilities. Sure, Lee had some general knowledge of things, I do not remember his pre-Toaster background, but nonetheless he invested a year into digesting and becoming intimately familiar with a completely new system. The effort paid off as he gained a reputation for knowing the Video Toaster inside and out - to the extent he once released a GREAT how to video that said: "Ten Things You Can't Do with the Video Toaster - and How to do Them!"

So, if you think you can do this, and you WANT to do this, and you feel like you owe yourself the opportunity to make it work for you. Just do it! You'll learn a lot along the way, or quit - either way you've not wussed out of trying. I keep hearing my late Mom, telling me: "Great ideas won't work unless you do."

Grinner,

'2 decades faster than most!' And this applies to Jack and everyone who participates on these forums. Unless you're born into a showbiz family, born wealthy or personally tapped on the shoulder by the 'divine finger', odds are good that getting anywhere in this biz is going to be a long and arduous 'assault'. Half the battle is building up a body of work to make people think you're worth betting their money on. The other and harder half is keeping your spot once you get there.

Nowadays, all the digital revolution has done is make it possible for more people to get started. Nothing's changed about building up a credible body of work and a rep to go with it. Anybody can have dumb enough luck to get 'struck by lightning' once. The real trick is doing it at will and make it create funny animal shapes at the same time.

You should try using the Bitmap, TIFF, or even the compressed PNG files that result in no loss. Also don't be deceived by the automatic (or user-defined) "preview quality". The image settings or video affects might also be causing the problem.

Do you see this distortion in the Browser window while you are editing or only when you finish the product?

I use a PSD file and only import the "layer" needed. Do not use too many PSD's as this is tough on FCP.

If this happens after compressing, try setting the compression settings field order to upper or lower depending on your sequence settings.

JPEGs almost always mess up in FCP. They are not the best format to use. I get "jumpy" pixels on bright colors or some distortion on movement like you guys have described.

Lay that 'Reality Whip' to him! Jack Grinner's suggestion may sound harsh, but this is not a business you should jump into haphazardly. You could easily blow a buttload of cash on gear and software then go bankrupt because you didn't have enough experience / skill up front. Hopefully, you've gotten an idea from the posts Sarge recommended.

BTW, congrats Grinner on getting your series picked up.

You obvioulsy are not ready for this venture. It'd be a good idea for you to work in the industry long enough to educate yourself before venturing into an overhead with no bookings. I suggest staffing for 5-10 years then freelancing for at least 5 years. You'll then know your specialty, what tools are required and what that is worth.

Hello,

I am interested in starting a small buisness with video. I would like to offer an editing only service where people would send me there raw footage and i would do some simple editing on their video. This would be charged at a small price. I was wondering what would i need? Would i need any permission and would it work. I would also like to know how much to charge?

I should note though that my footage looked fine on the original and on the timeline. But once I exported to DVD it developed the shaking. Reversing the Field Dominance didn't effect the timeline but did improve the footage on the exported DVD.

I don't think that Windows Movie Maker has the function but you might need to reverse the fields by selecting "Lower Field First". I don't know how much the videos mean to you to convert properly but you may want to look into some consumer level editing software like Adobe Premiere Elements. It is around $100 and gives you more options (including the field dominance preference) I had the same problem converting and this helped me some.

The computer's display setting should not affect the quality of capture. Have you checked the stability (if the video displays property) on a TV? This may be a tape degradation or camcorder problem. What codec are you capturing? If the analog capture codec (analog to digital conversion) is AVCHD, then you'll most likely have some sort of "motion-trailing" side affect. The codec for capturing should be DV-AVI for the smoothest and highest quality capture.

Actually when I burn to DVD the jerking motion is still there - is there a display setting I should be looking for - or a setting when I am capturing the video? I am using Windows Movie Maker to capture - I can't get AVS or Nero to capture the composite.

Many players and editors with capture capabilities will have some sort of de-interlacing system which converts to progressive during playback. No changes are actually made to the video, but instead adjusted in a way so that it can be played back on computer. Small bits of color lines appear during playback of MPEG-2 interlaced footage with Windows Media Player (having downloaded the proper audio and video codecs).

Make sure the camcorder is connected properly and capture the video as it is. During the capture process, you should also check for capture information and possibly a "drop meter" (indicating the amount of footage getting dropped during capture).

I am trying to upload my old analog 8mm tapes to my PC using the RCA connections on my TV-in/tuner card. It all seems to be going well, but I find that I am getting some distortion or interference on the uploaded file. As I watch it upload, on the camera the image is fine, but on the computer there is some interference, the best way to describe it is like when the old tv stations on an antenna would go in and out angled lines on the image. What would cause this? Is there any way to get rid of it?

On another note, is there any way to clean up the images, or make them clearer? I can only upload as a WMV (I am using Windows Movie Maker to capture), I would prefer AVI. If I convert to AVI afterwards, will the picture improve? I want to create DVD's for playback on a television screen & am afraid that the image will be all grainy.

Thanks for the help

I think the issue your are having is the same problem I'm having.

When I add a JPEG (or any other photo format) image with text, it is all interlaced looking. I haven't been able to correct this. It doesn't matter how hi or low the resolution on the image is.

This also happens if I add text titles into the video.

If I want the text to scroll up the screen, it almost waves as it goes through fields and up the screen.

"Any other outlets you'd recommend besides tiger direct and new egg? Will I regret going with integrated grahics?"

BTS,

There are many other outlets that make B2O network grade laptops. I recommended TD because I've use their Systemax line and have had zero problems. If you're into all of that 'buyer's experience' like with Mac, HP or Dell, don't go down this road. B20's are plain workhorses that are just there to get the job done. Definitely get a GPU. Integrated graphics are not designed to handle the demands of NLE or animation software will make upon them.

Besides, you really want to have a desktop as your main editor and a laptop as field editor. Your field editor should be capable of doing baseline edits and some motion graphics. Save the hardcore rendering and FX generating for the desktop. No matter what brand of laptop you get, it will not be as robust as a desktop. So the harder you push it in the field the more likely it will fail.

Other outfits you can look at are; falcon-nw.com & alienware.com. Those are the only ones outside of the Systemax line I've heard good reviews about or put hands on one of their units. Be advised: Alienware is pricey and last time I checked you couldn't get Vista Biz on one of their units. It may be the same with Win 7. Unless you plan on using your laptop as a media center, don't waste the cash on Ultimate. The Win Pro versions always have stripped down software and computer controls you would expect a pro OS to have. That and they're always cheaper than the 'whiz bang' version.

Try using tiff images, or even just a .psd document with an alpha channel in Photoshop. Make sure when you import it that you keep the alpha channel. If you're still having problems with pixelation, try making the image bigger than you need, then shrink it to the right size in FCP.

Thanks composite1, good advice! I've been browsing the refurbs at new egg and tiger direct, and it looks like there are some good deals on nice machines that would save me upwards of $250. It's not as much of a question of being strapped for cash as it is your summary: best bang for the buck and no regrets when the unit eventually craps out.

Any other outlets you'd recommend besides tiger direct and new egg? Will I regret going with integrated grahics? It seems like the choice of dedicated card machines is limited, at best...

Thanks again! Appreciate the help.

BTS,

I won't rehash the good info TD gave you. Concerning a refurb'd rig... eh... it depends on how broke you are. I mean if you're really strapped into your budget a refurb might be okay. If you don't want to go with a pricey pre-built from one of the brand names, my suggestion is a built-to-order laptop. Off the top of my head, Tiger Direct's Systemax line of B2O's are inexpensive and well made for the money. Plus since they are intended as a workstation-style computer, they won't have all of that goofy bundled software and trial crap loaded in. Figure out the size of the screen you want (15" or better for editing) and the kind of input/outputs you need (i.e. USB, firewire, eSATA, LAN, etc.) Definitely go with 64-bit and pack as big a harddrive and as much RAM in it as you can afford (or it will hold.)

If you're just trying to get the work done, worrying about what brand symbol sits proudly atop your rig shouldn't be a concern. Unfortunately, laptops are notoriously good for a max 3 years before the technology becomes obsolete or the unit fails. Spend only that which you need so that a) the unit will pay for itself quickly and b) when it becomes obsolete you won't lament over having to 'can' it.

Well, I would suggest using motion to make an overlay. You could even use a jpeg image in motion if you need a certain image. I suggest motion because the graphics are designed to be used with fcp.

It does, thanks! I'm editing HD, and my old laptop can't handle it, hence the new investment. I will keep an eye open for a 64 bit system with a dedicated card and a dual-core processor.

What about open box or refurbished laptops? Should I stay away from those? Is there a higher risk for quality problems due to the portable nature of a laptop and the possibility of them getting beaten up pretty easily?

I have to superimpose some logos onto an underwriters spot I'm editing in Final Cut Pro. I've had some problem with the appearance ( they look too transparent, some pixelate, or they look scratched). I've been working with jpeg. images sent by clients.

My questions are:

1.) is there a particular format other than jpeg. that I should be using; or

2.) am I missing something here, and is there a specific best way of doing it in FCP?

I am using Final Cut Studio 3

Thanks

Hey, you definitely want dual core because it will add stability to the labor-intensive programs such as editing. Intel or AMD is usually a matter of personal preference, I would look to see which gives you the most bang for your buck. I have found AMD to be more stable, but intel is typically faster. That being said, I prefer the stability for my rigs. Unless you are trying to run every application for pinnacle at once, you should be ok with an integrated card, but if you are using (or planning to) HD, you will want the dedicated. I say go for the 64-bit because more and more programs are coming out with compatibility with each passing day. Every computer bought between a few months ago and a few months from now (I don't know the actual dates, I think it's something like from april till the end of the year) comes with a free windows seven upgrade, so take advantage of the discount to vista machines and make the switch before you even touch vista. As for brand names, I have always liked HP and Gateway, but I don't have any loyalties because it all comes down to cold-hard figures.

Hope this helps.

Hi All,

I am looking for a good laptop for editing HD videos on the go. Here are some of my criteria:

Run Pinnacle Stuido version 10 or higher, efficiently.

Ideally a smaller laptop for increased portability (screen size is not really important)

Budget of around $500.

What kind of processor should I go with, Intel or AMD? Do I need dual core? How much RAM should I target? Does an integrated card with maxed out memory work ok, or should I fork up more money and get a laptop with a dedicated card? Any brand names I should gravitate towards, or stay away from? 32 bit or 64 bit OS? Is it worthwhile getting a Windows 7 laptop, or should I take advantage of sales on Vista based systems?

Any practical suggestions that you can share would be greatly appreciated!

Thx,
