I have done this in Sony's Vegas (I did it in version six but this works in all). Most NLE's should be able to handle this.

You use a technique called rotoscoping which is described above for AE. It is a time consuming process (you probably don't need masks for all frames but you will for a number of them - figure an average of about 7 or 8 per second which comes out to every three or four frames for NTSC). I have done this and it really is simple but tedious.

If you have already filmed your footage, and don't mind taking a good amount of time, you can accomplish this effect using AE. Create an adjustment layer, desaturate, then make a mask over your person. The background will have no color, while everything in your mask will be unaffected.

However, the greenscreen way will save you lots of time and frustration.

Sounds like a job for chromakey. Shoot your subject in front of a green screen. In post production, use your editor's chromakey function to add a black&white image to the background.

(Search this forum for "green screen" or "chromakey" to get tips on how to do this.

A couple of ideas -

1. I never buy a coputer from a company I've never heard of.

Reliability down the road is very important.

2. I just bought a Dell Vostro 410 - business - for $900 - and I'm very happy

One of the plusses is that it came with both Win XP Pro and Vista disks.

I had Win XP installed, but could upgrade to Vista later on if I wanted.

I would be really nervous about the power supply on that second computer you mentioned- it's awfully low for the hardware listed.

Also... Vista really isn't as bad as people say it is. It works quite well on hardware that has proper drivers (sure, this means you can't run it on a P2 system with a Rage video card, but it runs quite well on "budget" machines (I built my machine for about 600 dollars 2 years ago and it runs Vista flawlessly). Also... Vista set up properly will only use about 300MB of memory compared to XP's 150-200MB so it really doesn't gobble up a lot of memory.

As far as the first computer you listed, it's not too bad. It's got way more video power than you need (unless you plan to game on it). The power supply in that is a also a little low. It worries me that neither computer you posted listed the brand of power supply (that is very important- cheapo power supplies will only cause you troubles).

Personally, I would recomend looking at some of the bigger names in computers. You might not get quite as "much" computer for the money, but you are guaranteed tech support as well as a machine that works and will continue to work.

It probably depends upon the editing software that you are using, but I changed from a dual core to a quad core a few months ago and what a difference.

I am using Adobe Premier Pro CS3 to edit HD and I can preview at real time without rendering. When you do decide to render, all four cores are working to almost capacity and the rendering is really quick compared to the dual core.

As to the operating system, I am using XP Pro SP3 with 2GB of RAM. I know that Vista can support more RAM but the Vista operating system itself gobbles up a fair hunk of it. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

Lastly you can buy a firewire card for a few dollars and upgrade your first choice.

Cheers

For an external hard drive, get one with Firewire 800 running at 7500 rpm. I would then transfer all non-essential files from the internal to the external drive and use the internal for making movies. iMovie6 is still a great little program for making movies but I also use Final Cut Express for more complicated procedures.

I also concur with the suggestion of not buying HD camera but stick with mini-DV tape camera. If you can squeeze in a Sony VX2100 camera, you'll be set for indoor work with minimum of lighting equipment.

Best buy has a 1TB Seagate drive for around $160. I swear by Seagate.

What I did was to get one of those and buy an external encloser. Vioala! External hard drive.

Total cost was about $190 for 1TB.

Much better than buying those prepackaged 150GB external hard drives for $200.

Well I certainly understand why you'd want quad core and lots of RAM, it has a good video card too, but there are a couple important things missing - the most obvious to me is the lack of firewire to take your signal from camera to computer. Yeah USB will do, but firewire will do you better. The second thing is that the single drive. I did notice a performance improvement having video on one drive, for editing, and programs on another. With video you run out of room quickly so, if you are adding a firewire card see if you can add an eSATA connector for fast(er than firewire) external drives. Hmm, VISTA... what can I say, VISTA makes the comment about getting a MAC too true! Depending on the program you use - for instance, even though PremPro runs on VISTA the recommendation is XP.

You are looking at an upgradable system though (or downgradable for OS), so I think it's a good choice if that's the going price for a Quad core 6700 in your area. The note about it being overclocked makes me think it was made for gamers, which is fine, but it lacks the refinements you'll need to add for faster video production.

Hi,

I know there are a few topics asking about specs for editing HDV, so excuse me for repeating others! Anyway, I just bought myself the lovely HV30 and now need to pick up a nice new computer to edit with as my old is not quite powerful enough anymore. I've had a look about and have come up with this one http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149956

and was wondering if this would be pretty good for the job?

£600 is about the price range I have to stick to at the moment (in case anyone has any other ideas that jump into the 1000s!)

Any help would be great, as this seems to be a pretty good deal.

Oh and Hi for my first post :)

If I were you I would invest in the final cut express software to get you started. It is cheap, and actually pretty powerful software. As a beginning editor you will focus most of your efforts learning about basic cuts, fades, and the timing of editing. Final cut express will be able to handle all of the basics, and that way you won't be tempted to waste tons of time one things you don't really need to be doing right now. As for a hard drive, I too would recommend a lacie. I just picked up a 750 GB disc with eSata, firewire800, usb, and firewire400. I am currently using it on my macbook pro editing HDV in FCS2.0 and it works great. Keep up the hard work, your laptop will be a great editing system for you.

Thanks

Well, your computer set up is fine. It's definitely good enough for DV and probably HDV too, although, i wouldn't jump into HD. It's too soon, theres no point, and it won't enhance your learning process of video in anyway. Learn the basics of video with DV first; save yourself the money.

Since you are a student, you can get the student version of Final Cut Studio 2 for like, $700, which is super cheap. The only difference between that and the regular version is that it won't be able to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 3, which won't be for a long time anyway.

To answer your questions about the external drive, I've had a 250GB LaCie drive since 2005, and have never had a problem with it. It would be a good idea to have 2 separate hard drives, however, I doubt you'll need a second 1TB hard drive for general school work and everyday things. I would expect 100GB to be plenty.

Hello everyone,

I am a new film student (as of now I have only taken theory classes, and yet to take a production class). I am thinking of buying an external hard drive. It has been a really long time since I have touched anything in relation to film or video editing so I am pretty ignorant to alot of the technology as well as the jargon.

I really want to get more into video editing. Unfortunately, due to lack of funds, I have to buy my system in stages, little by little, and cannot afford to have 1 system dedicated solely to editing (for now). So for the time being my laptop will be used for everday stuff as well as learning editing and fufute student video projects. Here are my computer details:

Laptop - Apple MacbookPro 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4G DDR2 SDRAM, and 250G Hard drive, running OSX 10.5.

For now I only have iMovie, but eventually plan on buying Final Cut Pro. So for now I am looking for recommendations on an external hard drive. I know I want at least 1 terabyte of storage. I am also wondering If it is recommended to get 2 separate external hard drives - one for my media, and 1 for everyday stuff. In all I'd like to keep my costs down under $600.

As I am new to all of this any comments on what I need or should be thinking about would be welcome, and all advice would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance,

I have read trade publication after trade pub - They all say that higher paying IT related jobs in the US are on the decline.

If you compare the Sunday NY Times classifieds you can see this - The IT related jobs ten years ago were ten pages long (literally!) - Now they don't fill a full page.

I used to get calls from headhunters (IT recruiters) three-four times a week - Now that's down to once a month or so, all requiring the latest skills (I have lots of legacy stuff but not too heavy on latest technologies) and when they hear that I wouldn't consider jumping for less than $100K (make more than that now - remember I have 31 years into this) they have a heart attack.

If you are in college now, go talk to one of the career counselors they have - Also, you may want to speak to a local recruiting firm and ask them what's hot now and what they expect to be hot five years from now.

Computer Software Engineers are one of the hot jobs of last couple of years but they are on the decline. Computer Software Architect is hot right now and will be through next year (maybe longer - who knows). Database Admin's will always be able to find a job, their pay is declining however as more folks go that route and the job itself is starting to get offshored. Network folks get OK money and the good thing is that it requires a lot of hands on (which means you have a hard time offshoring) but again, lots of folks are going into that and soon supply will outstrip demand. If I had to choose one area to specialize in that would see me through the next ten years it would be computer security (attacks will always be increasing) and this area is still fairly new.

All of this is my opinion and based upon my observations - I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV - Your mileage may vary.

Is this what you have noticed in your area, or is it nationwide?

For the Midwest region, the projected fastest-growing careers for the 2002-2012 time period are in Healthcare, Computer/Information Sciences, Engineering, and Architecture. In addition to the Northeast and South regions, physician assistants and network systems analysts are and will continue to be in high demand in this region. Demand for engineers is high as well, especially industrial, environmental, and agricultural engineers (agriculture is very important in the Midwest, specifically in the Dakotas). For those of you majoring in architecture, look for high hiring activity in Kansas, Nebraska, and Ohio.

Top 10 Fast Growing Jobs thru 2014

Network systems & data communication analysts

Home health aides

Physician assistants

Computer software engineers, systems software

Database administrators

Diagnostic medical sonographers

Hazardous materials removal workers

Seems to me that these are jobs in high demand! Are the stats really wrong? Are those you have noticed loosing jobs in senior positions, or low on the ladder?

As a data processing professional (for over 31 years now) I would highly recommend that anyone stay well away from any computer career. Too much is shipped overseas at this point - I would recommend getting a degree in management with a minor in computers if you want to go into MIS but I cannot in good conscience NOT warn folks about this once exciting and well paying occupation which has gone to crap in less than seven years.

Good to hear a year in advance!...I am definitely going to go for a computer/tech related major - what would you suggest otherwise than Information Systems? I was originally going to try Computer Science, but learned it was almost all programming, which is not high on my list as a job, so now I am looking at something else computer related...

What's CIS, IT, MIS, and EE. Pardon my ignorance. I can't know everything :)

CIS = Computer & Information Science (or as mentioned above: Computer Information Systems - basically computer programming)

IT = Information Technology (programming, network, security, hardware, etc...)

MIS = Management & Information Science (management of programmers & programming)

EE = Electrical Engineering (people who design & build computer chips)
