I captured HD 1080i footage from Sony FX1000, used Abobe Premier Pro to edit it and Adobe Encore to authorise disk. First I produced DVD and its quality was very good. Then:

1) I imported timeline from PP into Encore using Adobe Dynamic link (same step as for DVD).

2) I selected "blu-ray" in Encore "built" window and created BluRay Disk image. To my surprise, the size of BD image was only 2.2 times larger (10.1GB vs 4.5GB) then the size of DVD image (I expected ~5x difference). However, I did not find any knobs in Encore to change the size/quality.

3) I burned image onto Panasonic BD-R media using Power2Go software and LG GGW-H20L writer.

4) Watched it using Sony BDP-S360 BR player and SONY HD projector connected through HDMI.

It worked! - but: the quality of BD picture was not better (maybe - even worse) than the quality of DVD picture.

Player and projector work O.K. becasue they show amaizing picture from Hollywood BluRay discs.

My questions are:

1) Why I do not see quality improvement on my BD compared to DVD?

2) Why this disk is recognizedonly by 2 out of 5 BluRay players that I have tryed?

Than you in advance,

Alexei

HiÂ

I am making a dvd menu with an active area and an image to be displayed when the button is highlighted. Encore sees this highlighted image as a button, therefore it interferes with the other buttons on the menu. Is there a way of specifying the hit state for a button so it doesn't include this highlighted image?Â

Thanks in advance!

You need to go into the main menu of Media Player, Tools/Options/Burn and set it up first. Take a look at all of the options tabs and make sure everything is set up correctly as you want it. I have burned dozens of CDs with Media Player and no problems with quality or anything else ;)

Thanks guys!

Chuckengels: I've used Windows Media player for CDs and it stinks! I hate the quality and it doesn't even burn all the songs! What a piece of junk! I'll look into the others.

And that's too bad about the $200 for Encore. Hmm. I'll keep looking anyway just in case.

1) Encore is a DVD Authoring application, that's all. For burning CDs you can use iTunes, Windows Media Player, or the software that came with your DVD Burner I use Sonic RecordNow, many use Nero.

2) eBay, but no version is cheap or free ;)Â You can use the older versions to get new versions for the upgrade price.

I had to pay over $200 for Encore v1, just so I could get Premiere Pro CS3 at the upgrade price.

Only thing I can suggest is to check the documentation they sent you when you purchased the software, it may indeed be a separate download.

Encore is a separate program that is bundled with Premiere Pro, so they are only sold together. Assuming Encore is installed, and it should have been when you installed PP CS3. You can check to see if it is installed by checking under the start menu where your other programs list. If the option is grayed out;

Is your timeline selected when try to click on the option?

The bit rate you quoted (2.0) doesn't make sense to me. I suppose it could be 2.0 Mbps (megabytes per second) which is a lot of data per second. Checking a variety of my video files revealed that the AVI's are either 1 or 1.5 Mbps. So I think I would reduce the target rate to 1.0 Mbps and see if that makes a difference on the DVD's playback on a computer. It sounds good in theory, but I don't know any way other than trying it to see if it works in practice.

Good luck & let us know how it goes.

Well my computer is fast enough to play the DVD's I dont have anything like that running on my PC...I have it optimized for performance.. So if I export these videos at a lower maximum bit rate it might work?? The target bitrate that they were exported at was 2.0.  I would really like to know if I can have this DVD just play as a DVD-rom specifically for the computer. This is a very large project as far as sizes goes and requires a dual Layer DVD

I'd suggest you try decreasing the bit rate of the MPG2 files you are writing to the DVD. Computers have to emulate the actions of a DVD player while maintaining the bit rate off the DVD. If your DVD doesn't have a lot of video on it, the usual default of DVD authoring software is to use the maximum bit rate for DVD players. But decreasing the default bit rate will let the computer keep up with the video output.

You might also want to check out how many background activities your computer is busy with. A friend of mine had the video playback on his computer grind to a halt.  As it turned out, he'd installed an animated wallpaper which was monopolizing his processor cycles. So you may want to try playing the DVD on a faster computer to see how it works there.

Good luck with your project.

So I am authoring this DVD for an online education community who sells DVD's to aspiring VFX and Game artists....So a mass majority of these DVD's will be played on the Computer.  I have everything ready to go and Encore gives me no errors.....All my video is exported at 640 X 480 to maintain proper aspect ratio of the tutorials on the DVD...the pixel aspects of everything including the Menus are square pixels..... When I play this project on the using any of the DVD player software on the computer I get very bad pixelation....is this because of the Burning process itself? The dvd plays good on the regular DVD player with the exception of the video getting cut off in the safe areas... What do I need to do to have these play at a high quality on the computer?? Has anyone else had this issue? All responses are greatly appreciated...

I am having trouble with menu creation in Encore 2.0. My issue is that when I create the menu and preview it in Encore, it works just fine. However, once I burn the DVD onto a DVD and put it in my DVD player, some of the menu selections are skipped over. I have some working menus that I have no problems with. I even copied them and just replaced the information and it did not work. I created custom menus in Photoshop because I wanted some specific text effects. I have even tried making sure the numbering order is correct in the upper right hand corner.

When I got that error, it didn't look like the buttons were overlapping, but the button outlines were. The outlines appear when you click on a button with the selection tool. perhaps theis is the problem with your project. I will PM you an illustration, because this new fomat didn't allow me to "insert" an image...

Also...I don't think the flowchat will show which buttons are overlapping...you'll just have to click every button until you see which outlines are overlapping. I thought encore had a feature that would atomagically create red outlines when buttons were overlapping...I guess not...

I hope this helps...
