Good idea. Thats kind of what i was thinking, it is also also about dangers in the classroom. Like How easy it would be to smuggle an ak47 into class. Also, as you said, the evils. That ties into dangers and misuses of weapons IN the classroom . NOt really haveing because they really arn't doing any "action packed" harm.

Hi (standard way to start a fourm)Im thinking, scratch that I am going to make a documentery film and need some way to get off the ground. As usual i want to stay on a super low budget (around $75) Its about weapens that super evil smarties build in school. you won't believe the things that these kids creat if you find the right materal. Basicly it is going to have a "host" yapping, then there is going to be a senero (i know thats not how you spell it) About a kid "pretending to construct it" (Not HOW to construct them.) Then Pretending (by the way, the audience isn't supposed to know that the actors will be pretending)to use it on someone. I have done a lot of planing and i am about ready to pitch this to my crew. I am working w/ a small crew and i just need some pointers.

I have neaver made a large documentery before so im going to need some help

P.s. If you think this idea is a bad idea, speak up!!

Thank you

I was a little confused as to what you are asking. Are you trying to copy a file from a DVD Rom (with files) or from a DVD video?

For DVD Rom (files):
All you have to do is drag it and drop it from the folder to the desktop, or where ever you want it to go. Same on Mac and PC. That's pretty much it.

For DVD (Video Disc):
Unfortunately you're not going to get much of a step by step because there are so many different ways to do it.

1st: is this a professional DVD (ie, Disney, Paramount, Universal) or a homemade DVD such as from a DVD camcorder.

If it is a DVD camcorder, the easiens way is to finalize the disk and use something like DVD decryptor to download them to your computer. (Note: I say DVD decryptor because it downloads the entire file system from the DVD).

2nd: Unfortunately, step two is a little more difficult. You will have to find a program that convert the DVD files to mpeg or avi files. Unfortunately they are difficult to find fully free. usually they have a 5 min. restriction or are not free. There is a website that allows you to upload your videos and it will convert them and email you back so that you can download the conversion. I will see if I can find the site and post it here.

Now if you are trying to download a pro DVD, you may have trouble doing so because of the copyright restrictions on the disc. But since that is illegal I will not walk you through that.

without even seeing your project, i can tell you that making a documentary is pretty easy and more fun if it's a topic you have an opinion about. So try that next time. Then come up with questions that will help prove a point and/or tell a story. Hopefully your interviewees answer the questions thoroughly enough that you can edit with out too many problems.

Ok I'm in a basic video production class. One of the requirements to pass the class is to do a final project of your choice (documentary, action, comedy, etc.). I decided to do a documentary. I didn't have many ideas so my friend suggested do your documentary about something the teacher doesn't know. I decided to do it on videogames (xbox 360, PS3 etc.).

I only had 2 weeks to work on my project and very little computer time because I was sharing my computer with 3 other people. I managed to get a few interviews with some people I knew that played video games. I also got some B-Roll. I have no idea if any of the stuff I filmed had to be copy righted or what ever so I just filmed them assuming that its just a high school project. I only had 2 nights to work on it overnight at school. (its not as scary as some people say). I worked on editing and did the whole film myself (because everybody in my class are jerks).

Some of my audio ended up pretty poorly and some of the footage I couldn't do over. For the most part the video was alright for my first film I'd say. We haven't gotten back our DVD copies of all the final projects but when I do I'll post them on youtube and let you guys see them. (Some of the people in my class are amazing editors, there work is brilliant.) I just wanted to let you guys know to check them out when I post up the links. I just wanted some of your guys tips and suggestions so I can make my next film better.

Greetings,

I recently got my first look at what goes on during post production of movie film by doing an online videoconference coloring session. You can see a truncated version of the one hour session by clicking here.

It's humbling to see how much work goes in on the post production end to give film, well, the best film look!

Anybody have any experience in working with transfer sessions before, sitting in and giving instructions? I'm very interested to learn what features are available at the fingertips of the colorist (other than correcting my exposure and setting mattes) that could benefit my look.

What would you have asked them to do?

Thanks,

Post your favorite books on filmmaking with the author and a short description about the book.

The Guerrilla Filmmaker Movie Blueprint by Chris Jones

The books goes into heavy detail about the process of production and what role everyone plays in production covering crew sizes from 10-ish (low budget indie) to 40-ish (low budget industry), and i'm guessing if you've got a crew bigger than these you should probably already have enough experience and not not need this book. This is really an awesome book to have.

Directing: Shot By Shot by Steven D. Katz

This book teaches you the very technical, tedious, and often challenging process of visualizing your ideas for shots, being able to storyboard them, and then actually shooting them. There are over 20 chapters, but the book basically is divided into 3rds, visualizing, storyboarding, and shooting. The book contains many storyboards from Empire of the Sun, The Birds, Citizen Kane, and Blade Runner.

Directing: Cinematic Motion by Steven D. Katz

I've haven't read this book yet, but I am going to be purchasing it very soon. It basically covers the non-technical aspects of directing, and focuses on blocking and staging your scenes with your actors within the frame. It's a direct sequel to Shot by Shot. If it's as good as that book was, I'll be able to recommend it, but we'll see. If anyone has already read it, please post your opinion.

Directing Actors for Film and Television by Judith Weston

Your actors are the elements that truly bring the screenplay and the film itself to life. So why not get the absolute most out of them. Judith Weston runs directing actors workshops across the country and based on what I read in the book, she must really know what she's doing. This book educates you to better understand your actors in what's going through their heads when they're preparing their role and while on set, but also the different approaches you can take in helping them improve their performances and also to avoid the wrong approaches. I can also recommend this book to actors who are interest in film or television as it will help you direct yourself and better understand what the director is telling you.

The Film Director's Intuition by Judith Weston

I bought this book last month and haven't gotten the chance to read it quite yet. This book is an immediate sequel to Directing Actors. It covers script analysis and rehearsal techniques. If it turns out to be as good as Directing Actors I will be able to recommend it.

Screenwriting for Teens: 100 Principles Every Budding Writer Should Know by Christina Hamlett

No matter what age you are, this book is AWESOME. This book could easily be used as textbook for a screenwriting class at a high school. Basically each chapter is a principal, 1 page long, and on the back of that page are movies that you can watch that contain this principle and also brainstorming exercises that you can do. This can easily be a self-taught course. It's a little over 200 pages, but you could easily read it in a week.

I've got a bunch of other filmmaking books in my collection, but not any really great or unique ones that don't have a couple hundred just like it.

Yoshomie,

I think you will be well served by a Canon HV20 or the new HV30. These cameras are well within your budget and have excellent performance. As has already been mentioned, you have the option of HD or SD and can use miniDV media. For the moment HDV (miniDV) is the best option for most people who are beginning to shoot HD video. The HV30 gives you a couple of new features (30p format begin the biggest) but it will bump the upper-end of your budget.

Beware the Panasonic DVC20 mentioned above. When it came out it was widely blasted as a low-end consumer camera stuck into a pro-looking plastic case. Most reviews at the time were horrible. I have to confess that I have never used one, but I would avoid the camera. You can get much more quality and value for similar money elsewhere.

You can get a Canon HV20 for about $700. Or do some comparison shopping at http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/camcorders/.

It sounds like the most important thing is the commercials for your dad; since he is paying the bill. I'd go for a nice mini-dv standard format camera with a good lux rating and at least a manual focus wheel. Editing on a laptop with only a 250 gig hard drive will not be a fun experience. The files you are going to import are going to be roomates with your OS and the fragmentation will lag your system to DEATH! You could always partition a chunk of your hard drive off to help with this.

With the ammount of work you want to do I don't see you running a 250G laptop as your editing station. You'd be better off building some external drives or an editing station with large internal drives to handle all that video. Especialy if you want to work with HD video it will eat your space.

Trust me I'm on my second 500G internal hard drive and it's at 60% capacity.

I'd just find a cheap 3ccd mini-dv camera with a manual focus wheel and a good min lux rating, (I'm assuming you won't have pro lighting to start.)

And watch your ass with the internet stores, there are a lot of fake websites that will steal your money. ALWAYS CHECK WITH BBB.COM BEFORE YOU BUY SOMETHING THAT EXSPENSIVE! If it's too good of a deal to be true; it is.

Yoshomie,

You may be far better off in the long run with the Canon HV20. You can use it in standard def mode, or you can shoot in HD and output to the computer in SD that way you have your tapes in HD for future HD use and the convenience of being able to burn SD DVD's on the computer for now. It has auto modes with manual overrides, and both external mic and headphone jacks.

All of these features and more are in a very compact lightweight camcorder (this will be important while travelling and working on location).

This will leave you far better prepared for the HD future than used SD gear.

you should get a sony vx1000 if you dont want anything TOO complicated. if you want to save money you can get a trv900 that gives the same quality. you can get a vx for about $1000 maybe a little more. trv900 for about $600-900. im selling one for 500.

this is the other option i am considering just for comparison.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8220061&productCategoryId=abcat0403004&type=product&tab=7&id=1166236338024#productdetail

but like i said is it worth it just for the extras that come with the standard def camcorder?

take a look at this deal and please tell me if there is somthing better I know this is almost twice my budget but I maybe able to swing it if this is what I need.

here is the link take a look and let me know: http://www.bestpricecameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=234774&up=192961

the reason i like this is because it does what I want with all the ports and it has many adjustable features, it has free shipping, and includes things I need like a hard case, filters, wireless mic system. I really want to be sure it is the one I want, this is almost as big a decision as getting married considering ill probably be spending just as much or more time with it =P I just dont want to buy somthing that I will be dissapointed with. thanks for advice cheers.

Thanks for the suggestions I have a trypod (not a great one but it will work for now) and as far as the hi def goes I'm not sure if it is a must or not I want it but I dont know if i need it. here is my delma I would be fine having a standard def camcorder because alot of what I will be shooting will be on the web. but if I need HD for like a church DVD then I dont wanna be sol I have seen standard def camcorders and they look fine and you can get more features for the money but I'm undecided what exactly I need. I think what I am going to do is record all my footage direct to harddrive using adobe CS3's onlocation so I dont lose any quality and I can setup the viewing screen better. so what would be the best SD camcorder that I can hook upto my laptop with the most features and best picture quality?

I'll check back now and again so keep the suggestions rolling =) and once again thanks for all the help.

For the money, I would definitely suggest getting the DVX 100, you can get one on ebay for around 1000.0 slightly used and it also shoots on 24p, its one of the best and most cost effective prosumer cameras on the market, I'm speaking from experience, its a brilliant camera and well worth the money!! It gives you the most crisp look, might as well be film!! Except it is digital, but the 24p option gives the look!! Just be sure to bid on one where the seller has a high rating!!

Enjoy!!

yoshomie,

The DVC20 mentioned by Aspyrider is a shoulder mount design, which is best if you're running around a lot, shooting unscripted action. It is standard definition, not hi-def ... don't know if that matters to you.

Another possibilty, going for around $700 street price, is the Canon HV20. This is a hi-def camcorder. It's a small hand-holdable design, not a shoulder mount design.

An item I did not see in your list is a tripod. A good tripod is a must. Expect to pay at least $200.... some of the better ones are over $500.

Good luck!
