Yeah, that sounds like you didn't export your video clips out with .WAV audio files. If the PC using Media Player either doesn't have AIFF selected as playable or it doesn't have that audio codec then you get nada. If you exported your clip in QT with AIFF files and the PC has QT player on it, it should play uncompressed audio with no prob. BTW, what video format an audio format did you export out to?

Have you tried changing your audio from uncompressed (probably AIFF) to something like MP3? I'm wondering if the PCs you're playing the video are expecting something different when it comes to uncompressed audio.

I guess you could just bang on some doors and see if someone will let you start as a post production assistant. From there you can work your way up to an assistant editor and then eventually to an editor.

I don't know how far you will get without prior knowledge though. Your best bet is to at least by Final Cut Express along with a lower end Mac and learn some of the basics that way.

You're not going to do much without spending money in this industry.

"but hardly worth the upgrade for any professional looking to customize with any level of creativity."

FCP7 is definitely worth upgrading too, just not for that reason. The new ProRes codecs and round tripping with Color make it plenty worth the upgrade.

FCP isn't for authoring anyway. If they were serious about Blu-Ray, they would allow for it in DVDSP.

">>>"the new FCP7 does have blu-ray burning capabilities, but I dont think you can have menus and all that nice stuff."

Yes....it's very limited and you have to use their predesigned templates....good for amateur home videos but hardly worth the upgrade for any professional looking to customize with any level of creativity.

Though I generally like to stay positive and look on the bright side of things, IMO, this is like a slap in the face....I'm starting to have flashbacks of premiere pro's old dvd authoring tool....what a joke....

You can edit and encode your video to a blu-ray compatible format in fcp, but since dvd studio pro still does not have blu ray support, you'd have to go with something like Adobe Encore to actually build and burn the blu ray disc. Please note that your mac will need to have an intel processor in order to run Encore....

I am editing videos using Final Cut Pro v6, exporting them with video at 48KHZ, then transcoding them to flash using Squeeze; the audio is uncompressed. For some strange reason, when the videos are viewed on PCs, the sound doesn't play out of the PC Speaker. It only plays when you connect headphones or external speakers to the headphone jack. I can't figure out why. One thing I've noticed is that when I change the audio panning in FCP to '0,' I get no sound at all. Thanks for your advice.

i guess i should have said if you if you don't have a large budget, you don't necessarily need the fastest mac that's available. i think it's better to save some cash and get some extra components. Of course don't go out and look for a G5 now. My G5 example was just to show that older, slower computers are capable of editing uncompressed video because of other components, not because they have really fast processors.

I agree with Rob's assessment except when it comes to the processor. I would always recommend getting the computer with the fastest and most numerous processors you can afford. I don't know anyone who edits on an older, slower computer because they want to.

Can't go wrong learning FCP and/or Avid. And yes, Macs can be pricey, but they are used by many in the industry. And lets face it, this isn't a cheap industry. Just as a tip though, you don't need to get the biggest, baddest, fastest Mac to edit. The more important part is the components you add to your Mac, such as a Kona Card, a RAID, external monitor, etc. It's those components that allow for smooth editing, not necessarily fast processors. Editors work with uncompressed video on G5s, not because they have fast CPS...they don't, it's because of the components they have with their computers.

I have only FCP in my edit bay, but there is nothing wrong with having more than one NLE loaded to your computer.

For someone entering the field, it looks like FCP is the way to go. Am I wrong? I can't afford Avid, but I want to become proficient on an industry standard.

Going FCP does limit you to buying Mac, which are MUCH more expensive than the new Windows offerings. On the flip side, Windows Vista has been a major letdown as far as reliability, and who know what Windows 7 will be like.

Do most of you have both FCP and the Adobe suite on your Mac?

Many films use AVID. Or at least I assume they use it since at the end of the credits in a movie, when it says, "Thanks to: AVID, KODAK, ETC, ETC" it means that they were used in the films. I have noticed that more and more. Some say Apple or Final Cut, with their logos.

I travel globally as VP of Business Development and Director of Machine Control for Carlson Software, Inc [http://www.carlsonsw.com] and also am managing editor of http://www.MachineControlOnline.com, an online trade publication working towards advancing the positioning industry. We use RTK GPS, axial sensors, computer, sofware, DTM Surface models and hydraulic controls and other such whatnots to monitor and position heavy equipment. See my rough videos below

http://machinecontrolonline.com/content/view/5759/180/

http://machinecontrolonline.com/content/view/5594/180/

http://machinecontrolonline.com/content/view/5569/180/

Our budget is small and I do so much traveling I thought I would work toward amassing some skills out of necessity I write music and have fronted rock bands most of my life so videography is akin to other creative outlets I need.

Okay, thats a brief background. Now my problems and I will bullet them:

Bought Canon XL2 in Dec 07

Bought Canon 30D in Dec 07

Bought Mac Pro (8-core Intel) with twin 24" Apple Cinemas Feb 08

Bought Adobe Master Collection CS3 March 08 (upgraded to CS4 Nov 09)

Bought late model MacBook Pro unibody 2.8dual core intel in Nov 08)

Bought Panasonic HD consumer HDC-SD9 Feb 09

Bought Canon SD750 Powershot April 09

Bought Final Cut Studio 7 last month July 09

I believe I am buying to bits and pieces to achieve a balance between quality without going to far. I have found Adobe to be overwhelming and the XL2 doesnt give me near as good a quality as the little consumer panasonic. The videos links above are iMovie 09, Panasonic and Screenflow to capture software video.

I have signed up for a Lynda.com Premium account and have gone through about 10 hours of training on Final Cut Pro.

The JVC GY HM 100u was attractive to me over XL2 Canon because of size, its HD and records direct to Final Cut Pro - saves me a lot of hotel time downloading/capturing/converting so I can go straight to editing. Again, I have other business on these trips.

So there you have it Philip. Is the JVC right for me? Should I spring for Sony EX1? Should I continue my final cut training and perhaps take a videography field lab course? Should I hire a professional for a shoot and tag along to learn?

I am attending the Travel Channel Academy Film School (12 hours X 4 day for 2000$ [ http://www.travelchannel.com/Academy/Academy_Home?refcd=tca_com ] in September so I am sure I can learn from there.

I suppose I am an AUTO mode shooter for the most of it and hope to get better. But I need to shoot footage of decent quality with amateur production, at least for now to get done what I need.

you really must live under a rock or out in the boonies if you think FCP isn't used in professional broadcast. Sorry if that's mean, but you need a reality check.

Zoobie,

First, FCP isn't consumer software.

Second, the only thing that's laughable is the fact that you think there are no standards. If things are made for broadcast, 99% of the time they are cut on an Avid or with FCP. Hell, big studios have entire Avid systems installed because if it's stability. I've heard of places still using Avids on G4s.

If graphics are being made, Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects are always used together.

3DS Max and Maya seem to be use all the time for 3D work.

A Di Vinci is always used for color grading, although Color seems to be gaining ground.

FCP hasn't really gained any ground in Hollywood features...that's ALL Avid with maybe a few exceptions. FCP seems to be mostly used for broadcast.

I've never walked into any broadcast environment and saw editors using Vegas, or even Premiere.

There may be houses that use "custom software" but I would assume that is extremely rare. What if they need to bring in an outside editor? Is he or she supposed to learn their "custom software." Yea, that's practical.

Jerron,

About the motion graphics, you are right, render out an Animation codec from your graphics program. What I meant was bringing that graphic into your ProRes timeline in FCP will better preserve the quality of that graphic rather than working in a DV timeline or even DVCPro HD. Sorry. I should have clarified.

Zoobie,

So your saying that most tv graphics especially at the cable level aren't created in After Effects and Photoshop?

That AVID isn't used as the main editing ap for Film and TV?

It's funny, I work at MTV. I have friends and colleagues building graphics and editing at every level of the industry. I have worked with editors and graphics producers from a very wide variety of companies throughout the USA.

Who do you work with that you think I am wrong?

jerron...the idea of yours that the professional film and video industry uses FCP or any consumer software is laughable at best

like I said before, professional houses use custom software that's available only to them with names you've never heard of

ProRes422 is what is called an intermediary codec. It is intended to allow you to consolidate multiple formats (HD and SD) into a single format. This allows FCP to work with the different video better in a more consistent way since the program no longer as to perform intermediary renders as it does when you try to mix and match different formats in the same project or sequence. The idea behind this is that it will free up system resources that would otherwise be devoted to constantly processing the video.

This is the first time I've actually posted to a forum and I tell ya it's been extremely enlightening. I've used Premiere a bit and I've used FinalCutPro (without previous exposure and lessons in it's use.) But, one to the other seemed easy enough. But, the ProRes conversion bothers me. It sounds like before I edit any video I need to convert the video - even if I know that I won't be using half of it I still need to convert to see it. Rendering was an issue for me. I've been able to use Premiere without any of that. Am I missing something?

THank you Jerron and Rob. You've been very helpful.

It all depends on whether you own a MAC or not. If you don't own a MAC then I would definitely go with Adobe.

Why buy more equipment just to run a program?

But if you do have a MAC, you could use either.

Really it is just more of a preference. There seems to be more documentation about Adobe products and more tutorials, etc.

I use FCP but that is just a preference. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Adobe.

Good luck

>>It's also a better codec to work with when using motion graphics,
compositing, and color correction/grading because it's a 10-bit codec.<<

Rob,

For motion graphics I would actually recommend using a codec that has no color compression at all, like Animation.
