The short answer is yes you will be able to add a voice over in sony vegas.

You can always delete the audio track in your editing software. I always use my mic even if I don't want the sound. You never know when the adudio portion may come in handy.

I am using a GL2, and am filming an educational video which will have much of the footage voiced over with narration. Because of this, I filmed the footage so far (2 days worth) with the mic adapter connected to the mic input on the camera, but I did not connect the mic to the adapter (being a complete newbie, I thought for some reason this would be better than having sound generated from the GL2's mic). My question is, with what I have done so far, will I still be able to add the narration (i am using Sony Vegas)? Second question - is it better to film the way I filmed so far, or film with the sound from the GL2's mic?

Placing an ad on eBay isn't too bad.

I certainly wouldn't be giving a 13 year old $1,000 equipment to play with. They'll just drop it...poof. You won't get anything you can use anyway. I used students almost twice that age and they returned zilch. One never removed the lenscap...

I should probably say this: the reason I want HD is that I am in a different situation than most.

I am trying to make educational/training videos that will go out mainly on the web, but also on DVD and eventually Blu-Ray. Whether Blu-Ray ever takes off, or something else replaces it I don't know. I just think it would be worth my while to get HD footage at the start, so I do not have to re-do everything later.

To me it seems like this is one of those times where a little bit more up front will pay off later, in terms of not having to re-do things. That is the only reason I am even considering it.

Thank you for your help and advice.

Thank you all for your advice.

Really what will probably happen is that my housemate's daughter (who is an aware thirteen) will probably take it all over hither and yon this summer, filming. I will give specific assignments, and then she will 'practice' by trying to retrieve the footage I need for my documentaries. This should be fun for her, and then I do not have to go film.

But I really want all of the footage in HD. I checkedon EBay, and they have a GL2 with bids at $910.00. I have a few more accessories than he did, so if I could get $1,000.00 out of it, I would probably be pretty happy.

I have never placed an ad on EBay. Is it difficult?

Thank you,

If you are selling a Cannon GL2 camera - Like New, you'd get a lot from it. Like Earl said, you will not be able to match the price of the camcorder alone for its original sticker price. A shotgun microphone included will definitely add value. It won't be too risky to give it a shot with eBay, a place that is full of new and used consumer camcorders. And anyway, we're talking about a Cannon GL2, so you will probably get a good deal out of it.

Sad to say, the true value of your GL2 (I have one and know how GREAT a camera it is), what you originally paid for it, and what you will get from a company that purchases used equipment, or what you will be offered by folks who frequent ebay or Craigs List will prove miles apart. I came to that realization recently when attempting to get enough out of my two XL1 and one GL2 to purchase (I'd hoped) at least one Panasonic 150, maybe even a bit toward a second one. Nada.

I will wait until I can pay cash for the new HD production cameras and have decided to keep my Canons because they are worth MORE to me than they are to virtually anyone "out there" especially considering market value when compared to current technology.

So, mine will become backups, live feed tools, second gig cameras, perhaps even rentals or loaners to others who work for me from time-to-time. Pretty much ANY gig they will be used for will be as much, if not more, than I could get anyone to pay for them.

You will NOT get what that camera is really worth, trust me.

Hi, Norman..

Â

Besides Robert's Craigslist suggestion or eBay, you might try any one of the several companies that specialize in buying used equipment focused on video production. In Videomaker, we have a company listed, KP Pro Video, that buys and sells used gear. http://www.kpprovideo.com. We also have an ad for a company called In-Sync, http://www.insyncpubs.com, but I don't know if they buy as well as sell used gear. Check these two companies out.

I think B&H also buys used gear, if it's very very slightly used as you mention.

Â

Hello.

It is a long story, but I bought a Canon GL2 a few years ago, and used it for about twenty hours. It was a great camera, but then I was hit by a series of moves. Now that I am finally getting set up, I think I need to shoot everything in HD.

Does anyone know how I would market or sell a Canon GL2 in almost new condition (with shotgun microphone, XLR adapter, big battery and hard case)? I think I maybe even still have a year left on one of those aftermarket warranties.

Thank you,

Hey, thanks both of you. I just purchased a used XL2 and can't wait for it to get here. I had considered several things to try and capture great sound with my GL2, among them a Beachtek DXA-6HD Dual Hi-Definition Audio Adapter, a Rode NTG-2 Battery or Phantom Powered Condenser Shotgun Microphone, and a Sennheiser Evolution G2 100 Series - UHF Lavalier System. Tell me if I figured wrong, but won't the XL2 eliminate the need for the first two? Will the shotgun mic on the XL2 be sufficient? What do you think?

I agree with Ryan. I frequently shoot event and wedding video with both a GL2 and an XL1 (very similar to XL2) and am overall very happy with the results. Surprisingly, even with smaller CCD's the GL2 holds its own with the more expensive XL1. I typically never use the digital zoom function on either camera, though, so no input on that aspect.

I've used both cameras extensively, and they work quite well together! As both are made by Canon, the image from both matches perfectly. The stock XL2 does have a 20X zoom lens, and I've never really needed more. The XL2 is a definite step up from the GL2 in quality and options, and would be a great purchase choice to make!

I've filmed several plays and concerts using the Canon GL2, XL2, and XHA1, and they work together beautifully!

You can learn more about the XL2 at http://dvcreators.net/media/demos/xl2featuretour/xl2featuretour.html

I have been using a GL2 for a couple of years now and mostly shoot pageants, plays, graduations, some weddings, recitals, etc. Thinking about purchasing a used XL2 and am concerned about being able to use both the GL2 and the XL2 for multi-camera shoots and it look right. I use Sony Vegas 8. Does anyone have any similar experiences? I sometimes use up the 40X digital zoom on the GL2 but am I correct in thinking the stock XL2 has up to 20X zoom? Would the picture be a lot better on the XL2 but I might be limited by the wide angle and zoom abilities with the XL2? Please give me your experiences. Thanks.

thank you for all the input, You can change lenses on the GL2 right? I am looking to by a wide angle lens as well. I have a fisheye as of right now but its thread is too small for the GL2

It is an easy to use tool, once you familiarize yourself with its adjustments, and the panel of controls available and accessible via the back of the camera, adjacent to the battery attachment area. The push and roll control to scroll through options and adjustments, once you KNOW them, are easy to accomplish and relatively intuitive.

I would not agree that audio is pristine and perfect, but it is not as bad as some have idicated regarding internal camera mechanics noise transfer, audio clarity, etc. It has manual focus and audio adjustments that are functional, and there is an option to acquire an adapter for XLR inputs. I've not identified a need to go that direction, but I also religiously use my Zoom H2 digital audio recorders for sound acqusition at most gigs, so...

To be honest, I am not familiar with, nor have I used or read up on or confirmed the availability of time lapse, but I do know I can shoot standard or wide screen and I find that helpful if I know going in I want or prefer one or the other for a particular production.

I have never had an overwhelming lighting situation that has defeated the camera's ability to give me decent video reproduciotn - even at events such as dance recitals and community plays where dramatic lighting often challenges a camera's low light abilities. I rarely ever have to use on-camera lighting or enhancement to augment the GL2's ability to render a decent image.

I have two Canon XL1 cameras and one GL2. If I had known the minor benefit interchangeable lenses was to prove to be, and the significant quality and performance of the GL2, I could have saved a bundle and purchased three of the GL2's instead. I love my XL1 cameras, but changing lenses has proven a premium I never needed to have spent.

I have been wanting to get the GL2 for a while now, how do you like your's? How is the video quality as well as the audio? I read about it having a time lapse feature. This would save me alot of editing.. is it easy to use?

Size-wise they both fit the bill. Ruggedness? In your chosen area of video production you will almost HAVE to approach them as disposables, although with some degree of consideration for their well-being, I suspect either one could take a licking and keep on ticking. I know my GL2 has sustained some serious trauma over the years, but continues to serve me well, but then I haven't taken it to the slopes - snow or concrete.

I am curious about which camera would be more suitable for filming skateboarding and snowboarding. I am rough on cameras and I want to know which would be the better camera for this type of filming.
