 Hello friends,

I know this question gets asked at least daily, But here goes...

I am considering the jump to HD, I currently use sony dsr250 shoulder mount and v2000 handheld. I am considering HD if I can find a comparable model shoulder mount with about the same controls ie-manual focus, manual exp etc... Any suggestions from users? Are the avchd models any good? will a handheld match the quality of a shoulder mount?

I shoot primarily weddings and a few music vids..

Thanks for any feedback..

One of the things making many of novice to intermediate shooters and editors on the forum's heads spin is the "HD" format itself. "What HD Camera should I buy?" "What HD editing software should I buy?" On and on with good reason. 'HD' comes in a number of 'flavors' (i.e. resolutions, codecs, etc.) and it can be enough to make your freakin' head spin.

However, unless you're working on really high-end projects for theatrical or broadcast TV distribution you can safely pass on HD formats like, HDCAM, XDCAM, DVCPRO HD, REDONE and a number of others. Most of you will be working with DV, HDV and AVCHD formats which are common among consumer, prosumer and low to mid-level pro cameras. So unless you're prepared to fork over at least $10k for just a camera body, the pro formats don't concern you. Relax.

I've said it a number of times in other posts (and I'll say it again) that the bottom line of what gear and software you get totally depends on your planned output. So if you're looking to get into HD but can't make heads or tails between DV, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 30p, 60i or p and so on, read the following article by Zack Stern, "8 HDTV Myths Demystified". The article pertains to purchasing an HDTV, but remember whether it's a computer monitor or a TV that's going to be your primary output point. So knowing how your footage is going to be viewed on your primary output point will be a big help for deciding what kind of gear and software you should be looking to get.

I am about to do a series of "how-to-shoot-video" tutorials aimed at event videographers, small production companies and hobbyists. We will shoot it in HD.What I'm wondering is:

What is the current camcorder and video file format of choice for folks who fit in that niche?

What are the industry trends these days?

What about non-linear editing software? Are you running into any issues as you migrate to HD?

Feel free to contact me directly if that suits you: jeff@sengstack.com.

Hi, could someone out there kindly give me advice. Â

I have a Canon HF10 camera, am new in the business and want to know what is the best editing software. I have made two movies with Adobe Premiere Elements 8 but is dissapointed with the amount of "crashing" and wonder if there is something better. From what I have read on this forum is that retaining the same format whilst editing, is important if you do not want to loose quality.  This would be importants to me.  My file format is AVCHD. I copied my computer's specs below. I do not mind to spend money on editing and upgrading my software if necessary. (within limits of say 1000 euro)

What is the best software for not loosing quality and enabling videos in HD or Blue ray?

Does rendering reduce quality and if so, what should I do to avoid the loss in quality?

Hello,

Would you know of any company or person that may be interested in comping a couple of compact HD video cameras for my Malaria expeditions?

In return I will advertise and promote them through the book/documentary/lecture series and website. Panasonic has already given us a Toughbook laptop for field editing.

I am married to an native Amazonian, have a private preserve
there. In March I will be starting my expeditions to remote villages in the Peruvian Amazon to deliver
Malaria nets to jungle children. 3,000 children die every day from Malaria.

I will shoot a documentary and write a book about every aspect of the expeditions as well as give real time updates to US schools and the public via internet.

The book/DVD series is entitled Netting Adventures. I have an Emmy Nominated producer on board for the documentary.

If you visit my website <www.AmazonDetours.com> you can review more info.

Thank you for your input.

Exporting Footage: How do I get the Best Quality?

Hi everyone!

I have a somewhat broad but nonetheless nagging question to ask. What is the best format/settings to export a final video to be used for high quality playback?

For example If I have some 1080P HD footage that I want to export for playback on a computer (to be played on a DLP projector). What is the best format to preserve all of the quality but still be playable? Formats like apple animation preserve quality but will bog down almost any machine.

Specifically I use Adobe media encoder but I am up for any suggestions of other software.

This is what I am currently outputting all my video as:

Main: H.264
Multiplexer: MP4
Standard: NTSC
Resolution: 1920 x 1080
FPS: 24
Field Order: Progressive
Pixel Aspect: Square
Profile: Main
Level: 3.1
Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 1 Pass
Target Bitrate [Mbs]: 7
Maximum Bitrate [Mbs]:8
Keyframe Distance: 24

I look forward to all of your input,

Ok guys I'm in college and I was wondering what is the best HD camcorder I can get for 1000$ or so. Cash is tight so its gotta last me for a bit and I need to get some good filming on it. I plan to take a missions trip to later this year and possibly longer in the future. So I am looking to do several things; I would like to be able to make quality documentary videos and promo videos for our supporters. I would like to make some youtube video content. I need to make some commercials for my dads business. And who knows what else so it needs to be pretty versatile. I am open to used camcorders as well if anybody has any connections that would be great. I will be serving an orphanage in Liberia called Acers of hope and will make some promo videos for them. So if you guys know something any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. here is some extra info: I am a PC guy and I am getting the CS3 master package which includes video editing software. I am getting a dell insperon laptop with 2.2gig dual core 4gig ram 256 NVIDIA G-force with a 250gig hard drive. I would like some features on the camcorder but I'm not to picky as long as it works; I would like HD, MIC/Headphone jack if thats possible. I am not really sure what other features that I need but I just want it to work well for what I'm doing.

I have a jvc miniDV camcorder, and recently I have been thinking about getting into the HD craze. I have an iMac with Intel processors and Final Cut Express 4 installed, so I'm pretty sure I can edit in almost any format. I was wondering which HD format, and how it is saved, is the best (meaning looking best)? File size is not really an issue, because I have a 500GB external HDD. Is hard drive, memory stick, or tape best? What about HDV, AVCHD, or some other one?

Hello guys,

A quick question here thts been worrying me..

Does an HD cam also do standard definition? The thing is, its my first handycam, and I'm getting an HD Camera from JVC which supports recording in 1080i but am a bit wary to buy it since we don't have an HDTV yet...so can I record in a format which will work on my 29" LG SD TV?

This is the camera I am going in for:

http://camcorder.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028148&pathId=141&page=10

I have a question about the latest Videomaker review of the Canon HF S10. The review says the camera can capture 900 lines of resolution and that it's on par with a professional broadcast camera. But, I thought when the camera shoots in 1080 HD the lines of resolution would be 1080. So, different HD cameras, even though they shoot at 1080 HD, have different quantities of lines of resolution? If someone could expound upon this, that would be great!

I'm looking for a HD camcorder (720 -1080 etc.) that is simple to use (Like the Zi8) but has stabilization and shoots only video. . no stills. However, a still camera that shoots excellent video is ok. $200 to $500 price range.

Hi i just bought a Samsung VP-HMX10 High Definition Camcorder - all good so far!

until i moved the HDÂ footage from the camcorder over to an external harddrive (as MPEG4), i then plugged in the hard drive to my PS3 and watching the footage on my brand new 1920x180 full HD samsung LCD is amazing but i have one snag - THERE IS NO AUDIO, i filmed it on a SDHC (superfine 12mbps) any ideas?

I played the camcorder directly through the tv using HDMI and it works so i guess its something to do with the PS3, any of you guys used a PS3 for home HD viewing?

Also, I plugged the external hard drive into my 5 year old laptop and played the footage using VLC media player, the odd thing here is that the audio worked but i did not get the picture (the complete reverse).      Â

In one of my older posts discussing shooting with the new Canon DSLR video cameras the question of how they handled action footage was the one posters myself included wanted to know. Well I ran across this video by photographer turned cinematographer Patrick Murphy-Racey and his shoot of the SEC football championships shot with the 7D. Shot in 720p at 60p with a Canon pro telephoto lense the imagery is just phenomenal. See for yourselves.

Ok, folks. I'm working on a mac, FCP, I store all my files on an external 1.5TB hard drive, and right now it's at about 900 Gigs of files. My internal hard drive is 320G, and I have an 320 time back up hard drive for all the system files and software programs. So now I need to figure out how to BACK UP the hard work and files. I talked to Apple, and they said to mirror the drive. So I bought another 1.5TB hard drive to mirror it to (because my internal hard drive doesn't have the room for it to create a mirror on my desktop!), but it took a full day to compress it, then another 6 hours to uncompress to the new Hard Drive. So that's no help, I can't afford a full day and a half down time every time I make an edit. I talked to Larry Jordan, and he says a RAID is the way to go. Without spending gajillions of dollars, what do you suggest for an Raid? Do all Raids take bigger hard drives in each slot?

Thanking everyone in advance for their help!

Basically ive got a panasonic hdc sd100 and when i put my hd footage on to my PC using the software it came with, panasonic hd writer, the quality is brilliant. But i can't edit this footage with adobe premiere pro cs3 or pinnacle studio 11 because i need to save it as an mpeg2 file first. But when i save it as a mepg2 file the quality is rubbish compared to what it looked like on the hd writer software. Plus it only gives me the option on the software to save it as a mpeg2 file.

Im getting really annoyed because the picture quality is fantastic when it is on the camcorder and the hd writer but when i edit it after ive saved it as a mpeg2 file(which is the only option on the hd writer), the quality is quite frankly crap.

Just wondering how i can get the footage off of my hd camera and edit it in the best possible quality, i want it to look like the footage on the camera, is this possible?!Do you have to save the footage in a different file format and how do you do this. Im just getting in to filming and am a bit thick on things like this as you can probably tell. please speek terms i can understand, cheers

I'm about to start a small video business. I know times are hard but if I can make it happen now... I have been offered some corporate work shooting sporting days at a kart race track. As I am new to this as a business could I ask for suggestions regarding the following? I realise quality is an issue, but I am concerned over the massive size of HD files compared to SD. I will be giving my work out on DVD therefore is HD neccessary? I am a big fan of HD, but will the added investment of HD cameras (I'm thinking three Canon HV30's) and probably a serious upgrade to my current PC be worth it? I know HV30's can shoot standard def so they could still be an option with room to go HD later. Another question is regarding mixing SD and HD. If I shoot trackside with HD and say use a helmet cam on one of the drivers in SD, will the difference be acceptable on the final edit? Likewise if due to cost I used an SD/HD mix trackside, how would that look? Finally, I'm trying to cost out the business for my business plan and although I will be at the track for say 2-3 hours, I don't know how long the whole job will take with editing, rendering etc so I'm struggling to come up with an hourly rate! The actual race that I will be shooting will only last about 13 minutes and I will probably have four cameras covering this. Sorry if these are dumb questions!

I was just wondering what specification for a computer people reccomend to edit HD footage, in terms of RAM, processor, graphics card etc. Ive been told i7, 6gb of ram and 1 gb graphics card is perhaps the most ideal for editing HD smoothly and reasonly speedly. Ive been torn between PC and MAC but when looking at the prices, its ridiculous i can buy a PC with i7 and 6gb ram etc for a reasonable price but when looking at a MAC with the exact same specification, it cost around 3 times as much, why is this? is a mac much better or is just simply because the fact that it's a MAC.

For years, I did my professional work with a Canon XL2, then XLH1. I film a lot of wildlife, and was looking into overcranking capabilities. I discovered the Panasonic HVX200, which overcranks to 60fps. The quality is great, and the video result is stunning (for subjects like running horses and flying birds).

I am so in love with the aesthetic of slow motion, I wanted to try out the Casio EX-F1 camera. It's a toy, but it has record modes at 300, 600, and 1200fps. The quality is pretty trashy, but the visuals are spectacular.

I would love to purchase a prosumer or professional camera, price range under $15,000 that would be able to record 30fps video with sound, obviously, but have a 300fps mode. Good HD quality, even SD would be acceptable, but 320x480 from the EX-F1 Pro just isn't going to cut it for broadcast.

I've looked and looked, I don't think such a camera exists. Maybe something to do with the sensor, or the way the rotating shutter records high speed video... whatever the reason, I've yet to see anything.

You'd think this would be a fairly popular technology? I've never seen anything compare to a good 300fps movie... they're just spectacular.

Anyway, thanks to anyone and everyone who recommends cameras.

There are many different codecs/compression formats and options for HD, so I'm hoping you can give me your input on the best/most universally compatible format for distribution of HD clips on data DVD.

I am going to be shipping 20 HD clips (about 15 seconds or so each) to hundreds of people, all on a variety of editing systems. So I need to pick a good intermediary codec that is very compatible with most systems, maintains high quality, and balances a file size that isn't too out of control.

Source of footage: Canon XH-A1 HDV. I will be exporting to 1920x1080 60i resolution, and here are my ideas/options as I see them:

1) Photo-JPEG Quicktime files. Seems to be compatible with almost all systems and maintains high quality, but the file sizes can get large. Also, deciding what quality level to use (I currently go with 95%/best) is tough. What is optimal for HDV?

2) H.264 Quicktime files. Thoughts? Seems to be a great codec for maintaining quality and smaller file size than Photo-JPEG, but how universally compatible is it?

3) Something different than the two above that I haven't thought of. Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks, Joel
