I'm guessing you are trying to decide between the HMC150 and HPX170? I'd go with the 170. DVCPro HD is a much better codec than AVCHD.

I am ready to invest in a camera, I am vacillating between these two cameras. I was drawn to the 150 because the price is very reasonable and is there a big difference in image quality between the two ACVHD or DVCPRO HD, student - focus is documentary (possible narrative on the side)

What I am struggling with is my timecode. I will record timecode to tape and say that I record 00:01:50 worth. Then when I rewind my tape to 00:01:00 instead of the timecode picking up from where I rewound to it (00:01:00 ) will continue recording up from where I originally stoped (00:01:50).

How do I get the deck to lay down timecode from the previous frame and not where I stopped it?

HEY SHOOTER! GREAT suggestions! On the mark and well-thought-out.

SK8 I couldn't tell you about the "death lens" but some hands-on, and a LOT of reading, and bunches of positive reviews by actual users in the business have led me to believe the Panasonic HMC-150 would be a GREAT starting point.

I am still recording in SD on a hard disk camcorder that records MPEG-2. AVCHD is the HD version of AVC MPEG-4 that might not be supported with your editing software. Are you looking for people who have experience with AVC-HD, or do you need advice on converting the files so that you can edit them?

I have the HDC TM-200 - it's a great camera. I think the only difference to the TM-300 is the -200 has 16G internal and not 32G. The -200 with a 32GB card provides 6 hours of high-def recording, so I didn't see the point in waiting for/getting the -300.

I love the low-light capability offered by the 3MOS sensors - takes me back to the old analog video camera days.

The camera is wonderfully light and transfering files directly to my computer is a breeze. I haven't used it very much - only for a suprise 70'th b'day, but it handled the low light of the disco environment (a very swinging aunt :-)) extremely well.

Very pretty. I especially liked the shot at 1:12 - 1:39, the sun traveled across the sky with the music well. Some of the beats of the music didn't match the cuts, and the rabbit felt out of place, but the overall video showed a beautiful morning for a nice Summer Solstice gathering. The imagery of the 150 was beautiful. I didn’t see any grain or video noise, maybe it’s just the program I was viewing it through. This made me want to go out at 4:AM and shoot again like I did in the old days when shooting was number one and a full night’s sleep took a backseat. Did you shoot all day?

June 21st 2009. Allison and I stayed up all night and headed to the top of Tumwater hill about 4:30 am to watch the sun rise. Still in the honeymoon phase with my new
Panasonic HMC-150, still getting to know it, to understand it's strengths, weaknesses and limitations. A beautiful sunrise. Saw a rabbit while up there, he made it in to the video, and helped me
realize what music I wanted to cut this to. "Time" is one of my all time favorite songs. I know I'm not supposed to use it, but I could think of nothing else that seemed more fitting to me than this song. I'm not making any money on this video, and I gave credit, so we'll see what happens...

At full resolution some of the darker areas seem a bit noisy. I've been quite impressed with the camera overall so far - caveat; the chassis seems cheap to me. It's all plastic. After coming from the DVX-100b and it's solid magnesium alloy chassis, the HMC seriously seems like it could never be as durable as the DVX. Not that I plan on dropping it - and I realize that plastics are a phenomenal material. In all actuality, it's probably fine, it just feels cheap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIuY-rePSw8&feature=channel_page

Nobody's gotten the Panasonic Mini DV PVGS120 to be recognized by their OS or just you? Perhaps you can pass the Panasonic thru the Canon HDD/HD to the comp? Firewire between the cams? Tried another device? Tried WinDV? Tried Linux? Tried +R discs?

I just looked up the MC-5 stats on Sony's website. It leads me to believe that it doesn't work with DVD-R discs, but only DVD+R. DVD-R is closer to the standards for DVD, so that could be some of your problem. I have a $90 DVD recorder I bought from Wal-Mart for live video recording. It seems to be universally compatible with DVD players and Blu Ray.

Honestly, if you're just trying to archive footace, MPEG2 is way more compressed than DV tape. Your best bet is to leave it on tapes for now. Alternatively, grab $75 and head to the nearest pawn shop. They'll have a dirt cheap MiniDV camcorder you can use as a tape deck for transfer.

It is my goal to capture the highest quality video I can to burn to
Archival DVDs with my current equipment.

I have a Panasonic Mini DV PVGS120 camcorder and boatloads of wonderful movies I want to save. But this camcorder will NOT connect to any of the 4 computers I own (firewire) Believe me, I have tried EVERYTHING with multiple computers, made tons of calls, dropped messages on forums, etc. The camcorder cannot be recognized as a device and videos cannot be imported. If this would work, I would be done and happy.

So, I got my hands on a Sony VRD-MC5 | DVDirect® MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder, which works like a champ with my Little Panasonic. Videos transfer over, and the way I understand it, the video it creates is MPEG2. To my eye, this part of the process preserves quality of the MiniDV tapes pretty well.

But ... here's where things go wrong.

Standard Def Videos from the MC5 will not play in new Sony BluRay DVD players. MPEG2 is not listed among the compatible formats for my new Sony Blu Ray, and the disk freezes up if you insert it. Only SONY camcorders can record in AVCHD on the MC5.

So what would you do?Â

Dub the videos to the MPEG2 disks using the MC5, edit them in Corel Video Studio and then output a DVD*?Â

Buy another MiniDV camcorder that the PC will recognize (I really don't want to spend the $$$ - I have a Canon HDD/HD camcorder already)

Something I'm not thinking of?

* My cursory test of this method shows "muddy" video output (like VHS
quality) but I cannot figure out where the quality loss is happening -
or how to avoid it.

I'm exasperated. Your expert opinion is needed

Hello, I had read that Videomaker had posted HMC-150 footage for downloading somewhere back in November. I can't seem to find it. I'm wondering if anyone has any generic HMC-150 footage in it's native AVCCAM state. I'm on the verge of buying one. I'd really like to try a test run editing some footage to see if my computer will be able to handle it. Unfortunately I don't live in an area where these cameras are readily available to rent, so I'll give this a shot and see if it works. I just don't want to sink the money into the camera to then find out I need to upgrade my computer.

The specs on my computer - if it helps anyone who has edited this footage give me feedback; 2.8 dual core iMac with 4 gigs of ram.

Any info or help is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately auto gain control on your mic is difficult to compensate for. The microphone on your camcorder is likely quite good, but it's in the wrong place. The voice recorder is a good option but requires a lot more work in post.

We recently wrote an article on how to compensate somewhat for on camera mics, hopefully you'll find it useful

Hello Monty

I am no expert, but one solution could be to use a digital voice recorder with an external mic attached. Then you would have to synchronise the audio and video in your editing software.

Hope this helps

Specter on "Fast Help Finding Perfect Camcorder (Pan SD9?)"

Okay, this has been an ongoing problem for me for about 3 weeks now. I have a week left before we start shooting our videos, and need help ASAP.

I've been researching camcorders to fit the following specifications:

Less than $600 (Prefer around 500)

3CCD

Great Picture Quality

Editable in Premiere CS4

Records to SDHC Memory Cards

This is for a series of youth group videos, and I was thinking of getting 2 when I thought I could spend about $400/ea. but research has been more than confusing, as people generally have so many various views of great cameras, and in certain budgets they compare a $600 camera to an obviously superior $1100 camera. (Duh, the higher priced camera is going to be better... it's nearly twice the price!)

I'm not looking for anything TERRIBLY high as all the videos will end up on YouTube and perhaps DVDs to give to the kids after the summer. I also want something that's slightly future-proof.

Anything from Panasonic? Canon?

I found the Panasonic HDC-SD9 that seems to fit the specifications, some reviews I've found have scared me a little.

Sony uses their own super expensive MemoryStick Pro cards... don't know if that's really within budget.

Anyone have some insight? What would you do?

The built in mic is not all that great. There are no jacks for an external mic. Is there a workaround for this or am I stuck? I use the camcorder mostly for recording speeches given in a restaurant/breakfast environment. The Speaker is about 10-12 feet away and I also pick up background noises like knives and forks as people eat breakfast. I am new at all of this and hope there is a reasonable solution.

So I was wondering. I got my dad a JVC HD HDD camcorder. The problem is that it records the HDV MPEG file to a .TOD format.

Do all of the HDD camcorders record MPEG to their own formats?

BluRay hasn't been around long enough to know how long it will last. Neither, for that matter, has DVD. I have come to realize that NOTHING, except maybe my old t-shirts, is permanent :-)
