Hi

I am working on a short film and would really appreciate advice on the work in progress film.

It still needs a lot of work including compositing of 2d & 3d effect but any feedback would be really appreciated.

Thanks for pointing out there was no plot!

Nice images and composition of shots (mostly), good color tone, appropriately lit, except for last shot of drawer (too dark). Liked your head in the lower lft corner in bathroom shot, rather than balanced. Shows creativity and good sense of composition. (Not being sarcastic.)

The two shots of approaching the doorway, then passing through, almost had a jump cut feel. Would have worked better if camera didn't show same doorway in almost the same way in second shot. Maybe you could have got your son to do a pan/tracking shot on you (M.C.U. of shoulders/head) as you passed through doorway. Not a real blunder, but this transition could have been stronger.

So you want to do horror films maybe ??? Disorientation/confusion reflected by quick cuts and piano blasts on discovery of shirt is fine. After that moment of confusion point is made, I did find it odd that you are seen on the left then the right then the left in successive shots. You just liked the shot of you on the right and couldn't part with it, or WHAT.

What if you showed yourself walking into the bathroom and there was no shirt there. You come out and there is the shirt. How did that happen. You go to the crib room and your charming son is sound asleep; you can see sheet music for Mozart compositions hanging on side of crib; precocious kid. You check the other rooms and call out your wife's name. She's not home. You go back to the drawer and the shirt is there or not there and you react to that... Just having some phun here, but that is almost a story. Half hours of some theatrical films have been fueled by less.

Good for you for taking the first step. Nice starter short film. Watch out about being influenced by the French though. Many of their films though filled with charm lack for much of a story. (The greatness of Truffaut always eluded me.) The exceptions to this can be a real treat, however, worth falling in like with subtitles. Hope you caught the recent re-release of "Diva."

REGARDS ... TOM

Thanks for your comments!
My equipment:
Panasonic: PV-GS320
Pinnacle Systems: Studio 10 Plus Platinum Edition
There were no sound effects in the video.
The lack of plot... I got an idea for a video that I could create and complete. Plot, etc. are user experience details that were of lesser importance. I wanted to actually make a movie, which I haven't been doing with my other ideas. This one I could do and see it to completion. I am happy about that.

I think my son stole the show in some audiences. My wife likes the video, but she would probably be happier if I cut it down to just him on the piano!! I did all of the work by myself, so tripod shots were my only option. All lighting in the video was from our normal house lights. It was evening, so there was no natural light. I think that the lighting isn't worse because my camera is 3CCD. It really performs well in low light situations. A whole lot better than my digital camera!

I have some friends who I don't see a lot of, but I think they would really get into making some movies with me. I'll try to use some of your camera advice.

Thanks again for watching my film.

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD305 - not sure how outdated it is - I got it over a year ago, but it has worked extremely well for basic home movie stuff. Sound quality is great as well as low light and quick focus.

I recently purchased the Canon HV20 and I must say that it is an excellent beginners camera. It has been perfect for just about any use I have come across and I love making short-films with it. You can get the HV20 for cheaper than what I got it at now because the HV30 just came out. The HV30 retails for about $1000 so you could pick that up, but I would personally get the HV20 and then get some accessories with the rest of your money. I hope this helps. :)

Let me preface my comments by saying I haven't shot hi-def yet, but I've been reading a lot of reviews about the camcorders you mentioned. All 3 are good professional camcorders, but the general consensus is that the Canon XH-A1 will be a bit sharper, and can work under slightly lower light than the Sonys you mentioned. Of the 3, the Sony V1U is the only one that can shoot in progressive mode, which can be helpful if doing post production effects like compositing, freeze-frame, or slow motion (your boyfriend can explain that for you). Also, the V1U has HDMI output, which might be useful in the future, when more compact HDMI recording equipment becomes available (to give better image quality). The Sony A1U only has 1 image sensor (the other 2 camcorders have 3 each), so the A1U color won't be quite as accurate. But then, the A1U costs significantly less.

Bottom line, for documentary work, the Canon A1 is probably the best choice; but for special effects and compatibility with possible fututre recording methods, the Sony V1U is the way to go.

Good luck!

ok, so i've been doing some research. what does anyone think about the sony HVR-V1U? And what is the difference between that and the HVR-A1U? Also, any opinions on the Canon XH-A1?

I've been told I need HDV and more than 720 so I assume I need a camera with 1080? It seems both these cameras fit my requirements. Thanks for your input.

Martin Scorseses directed many movie such as Departed, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, and kundun. He love tracking shots. Alfonso Cuaron directed Children of Men which he uses Documentary style shooting with long takes and shaky camera movements.

Oh I highly sugest you watch this Korean movie It should be in any blockbuster is call Chingoo (Friend), it will be the greatest movie you will ever see such a great plot and story line.

You got a good foundation for camerawork, some tracking shot are abit too top heavy for my taste. I love tracking shots but man they are hard to perfect. Scorceses is a genious at directing super long shots you might want to check his style out abit, and you might want to check out Alfonso Cuaron. But everythig looks great just keep being experimental.

HAHA nice your kid is going to be a famouse pianist someday, Is a great first experiment, personally I don't like tripod shots too much anymore, I like more hand held or steady cam the reason is that when the subject moves or turn you could reframe for pleasant framing, an example is like when you bend down you could reframe and keep your self in good framing from when you bend to when you stood up straight. It feels really stiff when I block my shot on a tripod I use tripod for alot of pan or track now. Some shots in your video could use some brighting up but besides that is great first start.

Also I would like any criticism anyone can give I would appreciate it.

I need a professional video camera for making a documentary and several shorts films. I'm clueless when it comes to tech. I'd like to spend about $3,000 but can spend 5-6k if it's absolutely necessary. From what I've read, I think I want an HD camera. I will submit to film festivals so I want quality that is professional. My boyfriend is a professional editor so he can edit my stuff on Avid or Final Cut Pro.

I have posted on youtube my first "dramatic" short film. It is titled "Shirt." Shirt is simply a reason to make a movie. I made it so I could learn and I hope you can give me helpful feedback! I also hope you will enjoy watching Shirt.

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a decent camcorder for making short films, as well as home videos. I'm not a professional film maker so I'm looking for something suitable for a new starter, but with reliable quality and feature-set. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions based on the following basic specifications:

1. atleast 10x optical zoom

2. external mic (audio input)

3. since I plan to edit the short films on my computer, I guess DV or DVD storage is more suitable, rather than a hard-disk (less reliable I suppose)

4. I mainly plan to distribute the short film(s) online (streaming videos), and once in a while on DVD's; so I guess 24fps (PAL) and web quality are important as well

5. I'm located in Melbourne, Australia; and my budget is under US $1000

Please share your suggestions.

Thanks in advance! Cheers :)
