I am trying to combine VHS and HI-8 format tapes into a single production to burn onto a DVD. Could anyone tell me how you have done this successfully?

Get an analog to digital converter, hook it to your computer, connect your source media to it (VHS player, then hi8), and play into the converter.

You have editing software, right?

That seems to be more steps than necessary, to record it to a 2nd camera then to the computer. You can get a 40-100$ PCI or USB 2 for video capture card / device or a video card with inputs (like the ati all in wonder series)that you can plug the VCR into and recored right from the vcr to the computer. Then it can be edited, combined, saved for later, etc. and recorded to a dvd. Or get a dvd recorder from bestbuy, walmart, etc for 80$ and plug you vcr into it and copy right from tape to dvd. They have limited(depending on price) or no picture enhancement though.

When you use a computer, you can do contrast and color adjustments, noise and static removal and sharpen the picture, to get a picture maybe better than the original tape. The original VHS tape only has a resolution of about 320 lines(about as the same qulaity as a youtube video) , the dvd will be about 480, so a computer can help enhance the resolution somewhat. The professionals I would think have purpose built computers to do the same thing, so they could do it much faster and with more automation.

Ive copied a few old tapes to computer for movies never came out on dvd. I just used a PCI capture card and went from the vcr to the computer, ran some filters to improve the picture and saved it.

Depending on your PC's editing capabilities, you might be able to hook your VCR directly to yor computer and capture the video. You can then edit it and create a DVD with chapters.

My full time job is in Law Enforcement.
We use VHS recording devices in our police units, and I needed to copy that footage for court.

So, what I did was play the police car video on the TV and recorded the VHS footage on to my Hi8 camcorder. Then plugged the Hi8 camcorder into my computer and imported the footage.

What your doing is used a camcorder as a bridge between analog and digital.

Editied the footage to reg and slo-motion and produced it onto a DVD.

It worked great!

I see people advertise converting VHS tapes to DVD. What's the procedure for this other than plugging your Video player into a DVD recorder. I assume that the professionals use a more hi tech way of doing it?

HI,

Im looking for an efficient way to make copies of non-copyrighted vhs tapes and dvds. I work in a law library and can only make copies while I am there. I know that VHS tapes must be recorded in realtime with DVD/VCR recorders, but I am wondering if there is a way to create or use a system that will combine all my needs into one unit. Since VHS is recorded in realtime, I would preferably like to have the option of using 2 or more vhs to dvd (or hd) recorders at a time. Is this possible? What about using vhs camcorders? I like this because they come with lcd screens that can help me cue up the video i need to replicate. Can they be connected to a burner or standalone burner? Are there any ideas. My budget is also somwhat limited, for now, until i can get this rolling.

The ADVC-100 is great, but I believe it over $200. I would recommend buying an older DV camera with analog inputs and using it as the converter. I recently found one at a pawn shop for $50 and it works great for converting my VHS.

Yes, it looks like that model of Sony Camcorder doesn't come with any analog inputs. You could use a device like the Canopus ADVC110 to do the conversion for you and come out DV that you could record onto your camcorder. We've used that model here to take some S-vhs footage and move it onto mini-DV with no troubles.

I just recently purchased the Sony DCR HC 48 Handycam... after scouring Apple's iMovie discussion boards, it appears as though I will NOT be able to transfer VHS footage digitally using this camcorder as a pass through. This is definitely a problem for me, as I was hoping to archive many VHS tapes to mini-dv. The emphasis is to archive to mini-dv as opposed to importing all vhs footage directly into iMovie, which could ultimately tie up my internal hard drive (I would like to go through the tapes and edit them at a later date).

<p class="gmail_quote">

If I buy an analog to digital converter, do you know if I can somehow transfer the vhs to a mini-dv cassette with this approach? Again, I would prefer not to directly copy footage into the computer. What about investing in a vcr/mini-dv unit such as the one linked below? It appears as though they are no longer manufacturing these but, given my situation, and the number of tapes I am hoping to archive (and eventually edit), it may be a wise purchase.
