I don't remember the model numbers of the current offerings (probably different than US model numbers, anyway), but Canon now offers several moderately priced camcorders with 3.5mm stereo mic input and audio monitoring via the AV output jack with appropriate adapters. One decent mic is the Audio-Technica ATR-25, a stereo electret model which will feed both channels, available for less than $50 US. I recommend using a right-angle adapter with any 3.5mm mic connector plugged into a camcorder, as a cable or adapter sticking out of the jack is an accident waiting to happen. Also, a mono-to-stereo adapter between mic cable and right angle adapter will allow you to use a monaural mic, like a lavalier or interview handheld, sending audio to both channels, not just the left. If you use any mic with XLR or 1/4" plug connector, use an adapting cable to step it down into the 3.5mm right angle connector.

Hi guys

I'm a video journalist working in the UK. We currently use a palm-sized Panasonic SDR H40 (Hard disk camcorder, not HighDef) to produce our video news and features, and since it produces good pictures (3CCDs) and .mpg format video, it's quite simple to work with. Since I produce video for the web in .flv format, there's no point getting footage in High Def as it's not for broadcast; it would only be heavily compressed into the .flv format anyway.

The only problems with the camera are that

a) there's no jack for headphones or external mic

b) outside, the audio is often rubbish, especially if there's traffic around

We're now looking for a new camcorder, can you recommend one in the £350/$500 price range with an external mic jack?

Or would you recommend trying a workaround with a digital voice recorder hooked up to an external mic?

Any suggestions welcome

If you want to have a look at the kind of news we produce go here: http://www.salfordonline.com

I export Quicktime files out of Final Cut as H.264. In the options, set the Keyframes every 15 frames as opposed to every frame. You can move the "Quality" slider to High or Best and still have a pretty small file size. Medium still looks decent too.

The typical nature of web video is that it is compressed for easy viewing and downloading. There is always a tradeoff between quality and size. You can use a common web format (such as WMV or QuickTime) and adjust the quality so that it is reasonable and stores efficiently.

The best experience I have had getting good output with a web-sized file is using AVC MPEG-4 format. AVC (advanced video codec) is still a newly introduced format and seems to lack compatibility with the majority of media players available.

If you've got the time and cash to spend on getting and learning a new platform from scratch (also remember you'll have to get new mac compatible software to run on your new unit) then by all means get one and go with FCP.

But, if you are like so many of us who are working unimpeded by platform save your money and time. All pro grade NLE software is more than capable of outputting footage to quicktime whether cross-platform or not. Adobe Premeire CS3+ can export a project's EDL (edit decision list) to FCP without much difficulty. With cross-platform software you can do your 'offline edit' on a mac or pc and then export your EDL and media clips to a 'finishing' NLE on a mac or pc. It gets done like that constantly and is not hard. 'Pipelining' can be less stressful, but what happens when you change camera people or editors and they use something else? Are you going to freeze up because they don't use exactly what you do?

With the amount of software compatiblity these days, there should not be any 'er, uh, issues.' If you plan to collaborate with someone who suddenly falls into 'er, uh' mode, run like hell 'cause they don't know what they are doing.

Generally speaking it is better if everyone in a "same studio" or on a "same project" basis is working with mutually compatible hardware, software and equipment. Although there are plenty of workarounds, simple or complex, it is always better if these issues don't have to be, er, uh, "issues."

Outside that, whatever works. There are literally hundreds of arguments for and against any particular hardware/software/equipment approah - all of them worthy of debate. Believe me, the debates have been going on since time immemorial.

Common sense says, if it doesn't matter THAT much to you, go with what the rest of your production people are already invested in.

I'm going to being shooting short segments for our Web video channel, plus pickup footage for a show that is professionally produced. (I'm the talent. These will be little woman-on-the-street pieces. Short and sweet, and some small pieces from my studio, little how-to's and messages to our viewers.)

Currently I have a PC and am going to buy a new desktop for the light editing I'll be doing. My videographer uses Final Cut Pro.

My question is, should I go the Mac route so I can use FC Express? Will that make it easier on Ivan, my editor? I was told that it doesn't matter since I have to save the files as quick time anyway, that I could go the PCm Adobe route. But another reputable source said life will by much easier for both of us if I go the Mac route.

I have to substantiate this to those who hold the purse strings. Help!

Hey there everyone! I'm new to this forum and I'm looking to put some HD video on my website. Can someone please layout the process of what it takes to make this happen? For instance: 1) Shoot 30-45 second video with HD camera with green screen or white background ---> 2) edit video and sound with editing software ---> 3) encode video for the web with software ---> 4) insert video on player (Flash player?) ---> 5) embed into website template. Am I on the right track here? I'd appreciate any input - have a great day! - zach

 Hi Zach,

This is probably not what you are looking for but... I think if you embed HD video on your site it would slow it down quite a bit and that would cause viewers to become frustrated.

I shoot HD video of my 600HP Subaru doing 1/4 mile dragstrip passes. I render the video in HD format and upload to my site. I then hyperlink to it from an index page. Â

You can check out the result by accessing my site and following the instructions below:

1) click this link:Â N8RWS.com

2) click on the "STi" image

3) scroll to the bottom of page and select the "Video Recordings HD" link

Let me know if you have any questions.

Stephanie...

...before you buy any kind of commercial software (sorry, I am not familiar with Moyea) I suggest you do a Google search and check out some of the YouTube-like forums that are available. Many of these, in addition to offering placement of your clips/samples on their sites, also provide you with cut-and-paste code that can be applied to YOUR web site, making a playback window on your actual pages. One that comes to mind is http://www.blip.tv where they actually set up your clips on several formats, including flash (I currently use QuickTime and my dotMac - it has a new name now - account, but I am experimenting with these to determine their feasibility as we change up and improve our web site contents). From there, blip actually also shares clips you post on several of the other web sites that do this.

It might be worth checking out before you spend money unnecessarily.

This may sound silly but I actually use Windows Movie Maker to downcovert pieces made on Adobe Premiere Pro.

Here's I do it:

1) Export the finished Adobe timeline as a movie.

2) Import that movie into Movie Maker. Be sure to uncheck the automatic clips box.

3) Drag the movie you imported into the Movie Maker timeline or storyboard.

4) Under Finish Movie, click save to my computer.

5) Give it a title and destination and click next.

6) Check "Other Settings" and select "High Quality NTSC"Â from the drop down menu.

This has given me a good balance between size and quality.

Adobe Prem Pro .. that your using is fine exporter .. you don't need anything else as well as adobe video encoder all good software .. ... I use that all the time exporting to the web .. its the fact that video sizes have to be so compressed to be played on the Internet and quality suffers .. you've compressed it once from APP then You Tube have also converted it for play out .. and squished it even more .... and the video quality will suffer with every downgrade  ... Compression is a pain on video ...

 Youtube sucks. Go to exposureroom.com

They allow you to upload a video of any size. And any number of videos. However, I'd hold back from uploading your own "youtube" videos, for example, cats falling asleep, the sneezing panda, that dude who tells people to leave brittney alone. It seems to be a professional environment. So try to upload only serious videos. Â

As far as settings for your file: I always export my video out of Final Cut Pro to Compressor. Then I select the H.264 codec. Have all the setting at the highest quality. I usually make my video size 320X246

it's not the frame size and aspect you need to worry about so much as the codec and bit rate of compression. take a look at a program called super, it will encode very well and has very adjustable parameters.

I was wondering how to get my videos to look crisp and clear after posting them on the web. I use APP 1.5 to edit and a Sony dcr-trv530 (digital 8) cam. After exporting and uploading to sites such as youtube the video appears very grainy, I have tried to play around with the frame size and aspect ratio but still get the same results. I've used youtubes recommended settings (640x480) and still no difference. A few of the videos in the short video contest used the sony dcr-trv730 cam (best senior video, best documentary, best comedy) which is a step above my camera and the video quality is worlds better so I don't think it is my ancient camera causing the problem. Any suggestions or solutions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
