I have only played a bit with this, more for my own personal research, so I will share the information that I have which will hopefully point you in the right direction.

You will get much better quality and more reliable connection using firewire. USB is a shared bus, so for every device you connect, your bandwidth is cut in half. You might be able to get a good quality connection to a camera using USB, but if you connect more than one camera, you will probably get dropped frames. NOTE I have not tested this exact scenario, but I have never had much luck with transfering video over USB.

If you go Firewire, you will need to have a seperate firewire card for each camera.

As far as software is concerned, have you looked at wirecast? ($499) http://www.telestream.net/wire-cast/overview.htm which allows you do do live switching, lower thirds and a variety of other options. There are similar alternatives like http://www.avtake.com/. These might be a bit out of your budget.

I would also suggest you take a look at the video stream of a technology journalist/podcaster that I watch. He has created a Television quality broadcast at a fraction of the cost (he has still spent tens of thousands of dollars, but that is a fraction of what broadcast telivision would be). He streams everything live, has 4 cameras, and does video interviews via Skype. He has no sound or camera crew, he does all of the video and audio switching himself shile conducting the interviews. If nothing else, it might give you some ideas http://www.live.twit.tv

When money becomes more available, look at a tricaster http://www.newtek.com/tricaster/tricaster_duo.php although at $4000 for the lowest model, it might be a hard sell.

Hello.
First of all sorry I am for my English :-) I am trying to prepare a “cheap video production platform” for broadcasting various events live over the internet (mostly - small concerts). It is not a commercial project, that is why I cannot afford professional solutions. I am looking for tools and solutions that won't cost a lot of money, but I also want them to have features listed below. I already have some theories and ideas for solving many issues but I do not have possibility to test them in practice (no video hardware). Foget the internet connection speed, used encoding software or internet broadcasting services. After live proadcast I ant to edit video from many cameras and upload in even better quality. Generally video quality like http://www.youtube.com/user/czlowiekamera is really enough (that is not my project).

Below my needs/features/problems and ideas for finding/solving them:
requested feature:
reasonable video quality for live streaming something around 640x400, preferred to use two HD cameras, up to 500€ each; is it possible to stream video to PC over USB or FireWire, and record the event in HD on the camera simultaneously?
requested feature:
easy streaming to PC: it is necessary that this 500€ HD camera will be visible in Windows as a standard webcam (with better parameters); Are there cameras that allow to stream video to PC over USB? That would be easiest way because I could use most of available software tools, and I am sure that “ManyCam” allows to switch between two USB Webcams. Also there shouldn’t be problem with connecting two or more cams to PC.
In case I have to use FireWire to stream video to PC. How does it work? Do I need extra software like WebCamDV v2.1? Can I use two „FireWired” cameras simultaneously working with my PC/Notebook? Any other Ideas?
requested feature:
multicam - necessary to use at least two cameras and switch between them, hardware mixers are way too expensive; my idea is to use software like ManyCam, I have testes with two webcams and it allows to switch between various video sources. Will it work with FireFire? Anyone knows different or better Software?
If somebody knows other or better solutions – please share them :-)

Thanks in advance
Piotr

We produce Live webcasts of events and what you are saying your requirements are go beyond a simple camera.Â

for Camera I would suggest a good quality 3 CCD camera. Budget will determine what you go with but I love our XL1s' and with the MA200 we can put in multiple XLR mic's. Will go on standard tripod and can be bought for decent value IMO. We also have a Sony DSR250A. Again little older but good quality camera that perfroms well. Downside to Sony is the baseplate and tripod requirements add to the cost. But the sony does have built in XLR so saves you on the cost of MA200

We use 4 cameras in our prodution so we also have a cheapo MX1 video switch. It does the job for us, has chroma key, couple of hundred transitions and some features I yet to figure out. Apparently it has Luminance that will allow you to plug in computer and use graphics as video source but I have yet to try it. depending on what we do for graphics generation I may go with an MX4DV for our next event if budget will permit the purchase

We run all our audio through a Behringer 1204fx mixer. I like this mixer as it has some audio effects built in and comes with a USB type adapter to feed audio from mixer to computer. Allows ontrol of audio and effects on each channel so you can control each mic independantly

Lighting I can not really comment on as most our events are outdoor and cover a large space that would be to hard to light.

Software
Currently use Premiere pro CS3. Only really use this as it came with the suite we bought for photoshop and illustrator.Â
WEBCAM MAX. I know most people are probably groaning at this app. but for the price it allows me to do a variety of overlay effects with text and graphics on the downstream side of things. As well I can throw in images and other media files into the webcast easily. I am hoping to move away from it by getting a proper genreator to plug into the stream but for benig on a budget and needing to add some stuff to your webcasts it works. Again we are talking webcasts not production TV

The only other thing I can offer is cables. Buy more than you think you will need. Every event we seem to have a need for a different/longer/modified cable. Everything from S-Video, BNC, XLR have spares and more than enough length.

Hello,

I am going to be producing a web cast for a company i work for. I need to know the best camera to use for this. It has to have GREAT/BEST quality out there, be able to have multiple microphones/audio inputs, be able to capture computer screens via a connection, and i also need to know the best lighting system, back drops, green screens etc. Basically right now i have a "cheap-o" in which i sold the idea of the show, and now they want it produced full scale. Also, what is the best software out there for editing videos, not just creating good videos from raw film, but also the special effects part of it.

 Needs:

Camera

Lighting

Audio Inputs (microphones)

 Software
