Some time ago there was a list of video hosting sites like youtube published in Video maker. I need to find a site that my company can use to publish weekly project updates that will be secured from the general public but still accesible by our management form just about any internet connection. Anybody have a suggestion?

If your camera is Sony Brand, try using Sony Vegas. It is designed to work with its DVD Camcorders.

Who knows? Maybe it will work with other brands? =)

Birdcat,

At our current max upload bandwidth, your 10 min clip will use at most about 33 MB. This is the maximum value, assuming that you have got available the upload 450 Kbits and assuming that the clip content requires it.

We do not keep no user content in our servers. This is one of our advantages compared to other content sharing services - you do not store your private stuff on somebody else's server. We might add it as a 'on request' feature in the future. Therefore you you'll have stream it again.

But keep in mind that when you show a video to your buddy, it is not necessarily that you see it from the beginning to the end - you might skip to somewhere in the middle, watch couple of minutes and go to another video, or any other use-case flow that you can imagine. On SeeToo session all participants can control the playback.

You do not have to convert anything. If your content is one of the formats that we support (we support most of the video/audio formats), then we'll do it automatically. No effort is required from your side.

Try us. The service is free of charge.

Alex -

Are you saying that if I share a video (say a ten minute clip on my hard drive with size of 500MB) then I won't have to upload 500MB?

Also, if I do this next month, are you keeping what I sent in cache somewhere or will I have to stream that 500MB over again?

Since you limit your upload bitrate, do I have to convert everything I want to share first to a lower quality?

Hi Cris and Birdcat

Thanks for your responses.

Considering time learning - well it is very match straightforward. Very short setup process, than select a file to play and select a buddy to invite. It is very intuitive. Try it and you'll see how easy it is.

Bandwidth: it is not quite so. First of all the our transcoding is quite efficient, it can be factor 10/20 or more, depends on the available upload bw. Currently we limit our upload stream to up to ~450Kbits/sec. It is configurable. Second - the use-case we provide is of more casual and instant kind. It is much like IM session versus an email. You have got your buddy online and you want to share with him/her something funny/exiting/personal right now, without any delay, as if you were sitting in the same room. Without waiting ,30min-couple of hours, for the file to upload. This is the use-case we have in mind.

Thanks again,

Also remember that this will count against any bandwidth constraints you may have (like Comcasts 250GB/month) as instead of uploading and taking a hit once, you'll be sending those gigabytes over and over...

Hello

I am involved in a very exiting innovating service. It is www.seetoo.com.

We make our users share their media contents with their friends instantly, skipping the lengthy file upload phase. We provide synchronized watching experience for the Initiator (broadcaster) and the Viewers (friends). And furthermore - the file size is unlimited, you can run any size you like!

The Initiator have to go through short setup, while the Viewer just should have a Flash player in his browser (same for the Initiator). We support almost every known media formats.

The trick is online media transcoding and streaming from the desktop to SeeToo servers. The synchronization is achieved by constantly monitoring and feedback of all participants and adjusting both the up-going and the down-going streams to the feedback parameters.

We are in operational beta state. All core functionalities are on and working. We are currently working on further enriching the functionality scope.

I would appreciate any your remarks, comments or hints.

Thanks,

I'd just recommend that you convert to h.264 movie - 640x480 - High Quality.

I use AVSMEDIA.com - Converter

Send that to YouTube and then add &fmt=18 at the end of the URL to see a higher quality video on YouTube.

One of the rules of thumb in creating content for the web is always to build for the lowest common denominator of your expected audience first.

That's kind of what I was getting at. I guess part of the problem with my question is that I was talking about both production values and content, which is where it gets confusing.

I finally found an example of what I'm talking about. The company gotvmail recently released viral videos with Gary Busey in them (you can watch them at www.garybuseyonbusiness.com). These actually seem more or less professional, shot in a small studio probably, but they also have a kind of lo-f, user-generated feel about them, partly because Gary Busey is so stupid but because they're so off-the-cuff. I don't know whether they're HD or not. But this is the kind of video that could potentially appeal to a youtube surfer while making it clear that it was made by a company with more money than you and your home movie makin' friends.

So, to rephrase the question, is it better when companies aim for the kind of idiocy that gets hits these days online, or is there a place for more classic advertisement?

I think I read somewhere about this little tip.

Make your video funny with a hook and a twist. And by that I mean you need to hook your viewer in the opening five to ten seconds, just like pop songs have a hook. And the videos getting the most views generally have a twist, the action in the set-up turns out to be something totally unexpected. Say, we open with a POV of walking along a sidewalk & hear a big crash, flash pan to nearby home with gaping "car shaped" hole in front; running to home & thru the front door to see the living room is destroyed and the hole continues into the next room; rush past devastation & past wall to see in open doorway the cause of the destruction, a tag team free for all of political candidates with a referee who stands up and says,"As a citizen, it's up to you to decide who wins. So get out and VOTE!" You get the idea, I hope. You want to be leading your audience one way and end up with it all being something else.

But the best advice I have is to get familiar with what's already popular on the site. Keep track of the the "Top Ten" like it is a Billboard ranking of songs. You won't need to do it for long. Just until you get an idea of what kinds of subjects and production styles are currently popular. Then work out your video short with them uppermost in your mind.

Good Luck.

make a good video. haha...im kinda kidding, but not really. That's just a really broad question. There are endless tips for making good video.

In general though, a decent video has good lighting and good sound. You don't need to have the best camera in the world.

Your video also needs to have a beginning, middle, and end, just like when you write an essay in school. You introduce the essay so the reader knows what it will be about, then you write about the topic, and then you conclude. And it needs to have a point.

Those are so broad tips, but like I said, you asked a broad question.

Make a video with those tips in mind, come back and show us, and I'm sure you'll get more specific tips.

I presume you are talking about website playback of video

It's got a lot more to do with user connection speeds and computer hardware when you provide video in HD.

HD requires more resources at the server level.

If we didn't have DSL and Cable connections the Youtube would not exist even using standard def.

Most sites would do well to have a standard and Hi-Def choice.

This way users can click on Standard, which isn't that bad in some formats.

I have an e6600 quad core processor OC to 3.4GHz, 4 gig of ram, nvidia 8800gtx OC 512MB Video card and DSL connection. WHen I try to play HD I frequently cannot get a good stream, and must constantly click on the arrow. There are some good formats that playback very good resolution quality and they aren't HD.

Maybe this is an odd start to a thread because I don't have any real question per se, I just find it interesting how (and correct me if I'm wrong) as the technology for creating movies and distributing them gets better and better we have websites like youtube and google video where millions of people are watching some of the most horrendously compressed video I've ever seen. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking these sites, because they do what they do well -- they bring content to the masses with speed and can expose a lot of people to new audiences. But now video production, even for corporations, requires riding this thin line between lo-fi content that can be cheaply and broadly distributed, and hi-def cutting edge content that expresses professionalism.

I can't really think of any good examples where a company has done both, which may weaken my argument (maybe you can), but it's a discussion worth having. What do people seem to want more of these days?

I appreciate all the responses to my questions.

Some of the discusson went right over my head for sure.

I'll refer to the thread again as I get a better basic knowledge of what I'm doing.

@Chris

>>There are other ways of coding color besides hexvalues and my current FTP changes my hex values to something else when I type in #FF3459 or whatever.<

You're talking about using RGB decimal notation right? Aside from the few names (16 I think) that they understand the only way the browsers understand color is via hex code and RGB decimal notation. And FTP is just a series of protocols that allow one computer to transfer files to another over the web, it shouldn't change any of the code in your pages.

@Domineaux

The only thing I wanted to add to Chris's post involved this section:

>>As Jerron said, Flash(flv and swf), Windows Media Video and Quicktime are the big formats and the pro software can render out to these formats.<<

Not all applications can render to all of the formats. For some formats you may need a third party conversion program to make one of the web formats. For example, you can't render Windows media directly out of Final Cut Pro without a plugin. But since you are running a Windows PC Final Cut, which is MAC only won't be an option so you will probably want to use either Vegas or Premiere Pro. Chris will be able to tell you what formats Vegas can export to, but Premiere Pro can create all three.

In the same vein not all editing programs handle footage from all of the camera's the same way. You may want to research the format of the video that your camera gives you and how it works with different editing programs.

Yep, the sr12 is a nice camcorder.

I was using a hdrhc1 as my b-roll cam and renting a hdr-a1u as main for weddings.

I tried the sr12 at a wedding shoot yesterday, and as I'm editing the video today, I've come to the conclusion, that the hdr hc1 and sr12 will be all I need for my work.

ChrisColorado

What a great post!

You really put the proverbial axe in the stump.

I think the Sony HDR-SR12 is the camcorder of choice for me. It uses hard disk and flash card from what I understand. I like the features better than others in the same price range, the size is great.

I would like more manual ability, but I don't see much in the way of manual features under $1,500. The Sony HVR-HD1000U looks good, but as you mentioned it's going to take awhile to get the knowledge to really crank out just what I do need.

I've never used the Windows Movie Maker. It is included with windows Vista Ultimate, which is OS I use.

Thank you very much, you helped a great deal. I look forward to being of help to others as I learn and know more.

Thanks Jerron, you are right again: font-color is not really a valid css attribute, but I was in a hurry. thanks for clarification. (There are other ways of coding color besides hexvalues and my current FTP changes my hex values to something else when I type in #FF3459 or whatever.)

OK, domineaux. I'll try the 2nd round too.

1. Moving the video from camera to the computer - is there a best efficient way or better connection type to use, or connections to absolutely not use.

What I do: I plug my Flash Media camera in to my laptop with USB, Windows Explorer opens and I use Explorer to navigate through my media on my camera and copy or move to my computer hard drive. in explorer, my camera acts as another hard drive, usually called Removeable Disk E (or F sometimes). It's a lot like a USB flash drive, or "stick", hence it's called a Flash Media camera.

2. Editing the video from the computer - this is complicated to me, because some formats AVCHD, etc. seem to have their own problems and remedies.Â

If you aren't using those formats, it's not a problem. AVCHD, or anything for that matter, can be handled by my favorite editing software on the planet: SONY VEGAS!!! Vegas, Avid Media Composer, Apple Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro are the big four editing software and they are worth every penny you pay for them. I was very surprised that you were going to try to edit with funny little windows Movie Maker, but that's up to you.

After you import your footage to the computer hard drive, you the open your software and import the footage by going under File > Import and navigating to your footage on your hard drive from your camera, not the footage currently on your camera. (This is different from capturing, using Firewire, where you import your footage into your software from your camera. I don't like that method and can't do it with my camera anyway.)

3. Along with editing of video it would appear archiving of video data would have it's own problems and solutions.Â

For me, archiving is just moving files from the camera to my laptop's hard drive with Windows Explorer. When you move or copy files with explorer, you can make new folders, organize, etc. and this is VERY IMPORTANT. So, i have my own little system of folders with video footage in them. One folder is the original footage, one is the footage I edited, one is my projects from my software, etc. Figure out a system that work for you.

some people have cameras that record to MiniDV tape or DVDs, etc. so that's what they use for archiving original footage and you should keep these around in case you want them later, just like I keep my original footage in a folder in windows explorer. just different ways of archiving, saving.

4. After editing there is the thing about the better format for the web to accomodate High def play.  Then I'm wondering how important the format the video is captured to editing and then putting into final format that is web friendly.Â

This is a little hard to understand. As Jerron said, Flash(flv and swf), Windows Media Video and Quicktime are the big formats and the pro software can render out to these formats. Out of these big three, Movie Maker can only render out to Windows Media Video(and you have to watch to make sure you don't render out to another format by mistake!). This is just one problem with Movie Maker.

There do appear to be quite a few camcorders using the AVCHD format, but I know that isn't web friendly and needs conversion.  I could use a suggestion own whether to look for another preferred record format instead of the AVCHD or what software to use to convert to web friendly format.

Domineaux, all cameras are going to need to convert their footage to web friendly stuff. I've never seen a camera that shoots either FLV, SWF, WMV or MOV(quicktime) and you'll be doing that anyway since you'll be editing.

At this point I'm really looking seriously to just get the camera with most competent features to do what I need at a price affordable.

I feel your pain. After 1-1/2 of study including a year of college, a year of videomaker magazine and reading anything i could get my hands on, I'm beginning to figure out what's right for me. It's come down to three radically different cameras, one from Canon, two from Panasonic. you'll figure it out.

Oh, I'm also very interested in efficiency and time saving. Some choices might work, but be too time consuming and difficult to apply.

Exactly. my advice is to start studying now. I suggested some websites above. You can't go wrong with mediacollege.com and videomaker. I get the feeling from your posts that you are too impatient to start going. good video takes time. You have to study more before you run out and by whatever camera and stuff you need. Slow down, you must, padawan.

I forgot to mention I would like to convert some previous video files that are on VHS tapes, DVDS. I might be able to accomplish these if I can capture video directly from HDTV, since I have players for those formats to TV. I realize there are specific port connections I need on a camera to do this, but I'm not familiar with what I might actually need.

DVDs will be easier because your computer already has a DVD drive, I assume. vhs will require a vcr and cables and stuff.

Here's some editing software knowledge to get you started:

Sony Vegas Pro = My favorite because it's quick and easy. It's also A LOT like Windows Movie Maker, so I suggest you get a 30 day trial from Sony Creative Software's website. The free trial for Vegas Movie Studio includes tutorials that show you how to get going fast. If you like Movie Maker, you'll LOVE Vegas. I did.

Avid Media Composer = This is too expensive for most people, since there's so many accesories you have to buy to make it work well. The free copy of Avid I used also had things like trimming in special modes that make it slower to get work done. If you only know Movie Maker, stay away.

Final Cut Pro = This is somewhat like Avid, but it's cheaper and better for one person companies. It works different than Movie Maker though, so you should look at vegas first.

Premiere Pro = I haven't used this yet, but it's said to be like Final Cut Pro.
