First, let me say I'm not a pro like the rest of the people here. I liked the video very much, I'm sure there are thousands of Paris short videos out there but this one had a very cozy feel to it. You present much of it from a very personal perspective which gives the video a natural perspective.

There are only two things I would have done different. Paris is the city of love, the music you chose is a little to dramatic, , I think a more mellow, romantic tune would blend nicer. The other thing is, not sure what you used (only says JVC on your info) I would warm and enhance the colors a bit. there are some beautiful scenes but the colors look washed out. since this is not a documentary or a news reel I would add a special effect while editing to give a warmer glow here.

Great video, takes you inside the journey.

I agree Earl...I'm as worried as you, but for the cost, if I can get good footage, I think it will be well worth it. I'm just trying to figure it all out and any help people can provide would be greatly appreciated. It's vastly different than shooting stills, that's for sure. :)

Hope the CMOS sensors hold up to your expectations. The rest of your suppositions seem solid regarding speed, settings, shooting, converting...

...I'm not an expert and have done little more than test some of the CMOS based units available. Still leaning toward Panasonic's HMC-150 with CCDs for my all-around production acquisition needs. If not, the the comparable JVC model. Since you already have invested in the 40 however, it would be interesting to read future posts ragarding your experiences and outcomes.

Hello everyone,
I'm heading out on a 3 week shooting time, and the HMC40 and higher than consumer-tech video is new to me, including my HMC40. I shoot nearly all high speed action footage, and these next few weeks will be mostly shot with great sunlight a the dunes, desert, rock crawling, etc. I typically like to incorporate slow motion into my edited video, so my initial thought is to shoot in 720/60p. Is this the correct thinking? Or, should I be shooting in 1080/60i? I've been told that if shooting for slow motion, use a shutter speed of 1/120 in 720/60p, and 1/60 pretty much no matter what in 1080/60i. To me, based on my experience with my D300 still camera, those shutter speeds are only helpful if I'm wanting to blur the image slightly, or the wheels/tires spinning when panning, but is this different for a camcorder?
Then, my next question is what format to export using Adobe Premier CS4 for use primarily for youtube? I want the best format possible for the cleanest, best looking video on Youtube. Is there a format that YouTube won't compress, such as if I export using f4v or flv, for example? And, if so or not, what codec, bitrate, size, etc would you recommend for optimal playback on youtube?
Secondly, given the above, I'll also want to put this footage on DVD for my customers to use a sale/marketing pieces. Will this play a role as to what format to be shooting in, or do I just pick the best format for the web, then just output it the way it needs to be for the DVD after outputting the footage for the web?
Thanks in advance for the help...
Chris

Wow, great quality Bruce, even at full screen.
Did you change any of the default H264 settings in the Adobe Media Encoder?

This says a lot for sticking with a format that is native to Premiere.
The conversion is so much cleaner that way, nice job.

On the weekend I rendered and posted a video to YouTube and got a great result. My source files were Canon HDV's. I use PPro CS3, set the project up as HD but in the 720 size - and then rendered to the H264 option. Actually, I tried mpeg first and it was REALLY bad, then tried the H264. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPRmlPpsVeI

Hi Guys,

New to the forum and really need some help, here is what I am trying to do. I am trying to make video's for my new web site with my Panasonic HSC-SD9 and host them on Youtube in HD.

I have had tons of problems.

I have took the video's on the Panasonic's HX recording mode which I'm sure its 9 MBPS. I then opened adobe Premiere CS4 to edit the video's.

Below are the settings I had Premiere at when I edited my video's:

General
Editing mode: AVCHD 1080p square pixel
Timebase: 25.00fps

Video Settings
Frame size: 1920h 1080v (1.0000)
Frame rate: 25.00 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)

Audio Settings
Sample rate: 48000 samples/second

Default Sequence
Total video tracks: 3
Master track type: Stereo
Mono tracks: 0
Stereo tracks: 3
5.1 tracks: 0
Submix mono tracks: 0
Submix stereo tracks: 0
Submix 5.1 tracks: 0

The only problem I had at this point was the video was very jerky, but the main problem I am having is I don't have a clue what would be the best format to export it in so I can upload it to Youtube HD. There are so many different formats on Adobe Premiere CS4 that I don't know where to start.

If any of you guys can help out with what would be the best format to export in that would be a big help or even if you can let me know if I have went wrong anywhere else.

Thanks,
Kerri

Jerron brings up some good points and some clarification on 'fair usage'. However, the burden of proof will fall upon you. He's right that 'you don't have to comply', but the devil in those details is you'd better be prepared to defend your usage and if they file against your internet provider or your web hosting service, in order to minimize their headaches they will likely cancel your service.

On the other hand, giving full credit for where you got the footage from often holds off those inclined to lawyer up. But that also depends on you using short clips and not entire broadcasts. With everyone embedding video the rules are getting pushed to the limits. As is at the moment, you're in the run it up the flag pole and see if anyone objects stage. Sticking to the topics and not attacking anyone specifically may help keep you out of trouble.

Ok so then, what do you think about my situation?

Id like to produce a political commentary web show. In this show id like to review things said in the previous nights news. This would entail either reading a transcript, or playing video clips of the discussed piece. Do you think i would run into problems with this? If i could do it... i would post it on youtube, but i also had interest in posting it on my personal website. This website contains advertisement.. would it be wrong to host a video with copyrighted material on a site where im making money from advertising? ... Its hard for me to see myself getting notified from fox news or cnn that they want to remove their clips from my videos... DO you think their are any dangers in just going ahead with it until someone stops me?

>>according to fair usage regulations you can use portions of said
material either with permission or without in a non-profit manner which
is a broad description but that's how it works. b)The moment the
copyright holder objects to your usage and requests you either remove
the materials from your project or take it down entirely according to
law, you are required to do so immediately.<<

Just a clarification. Technically the "fair use doctrine" of the copyright laws does not make a distinction between whether you the infringer makes a profit from your infringement or not. What it actually evaluates is whether or not your infringement has a negative effect on the ability of the copyright holder to make a profit. It is the reason that YouTube can't successfully claim fair use for people posting even small clips from film and television. The copyright holder can claim that even small snippets can negatively impact their profits from both rebroadcast and dvd/internet download sales.

And by the way if you are claiming fair usage you don't have to comply with cease and desist orders from the copyright holder. That is the entire point of the doctrine, they can't tell you not to use it, because it is a protected use. Keep in mind that the main thrust of the doctrine is to protect scholarly research, criticism, and satire not just because yo felt like using the material, so depending on the context you may be able to get away with a claim of fair use or not. Another issue to keep in mind is something a judge friend of mine once told me; "if you plan on using the fair use doctrine as a defense you must first admit that you infringed a copyrighted work."

Lenau,

Yes and no is your answer. Yes it is copyright infringement if you take all or portions of copyrighted work to use in other projects without permission from the copyright holder. No, in that a) according to fair usage regulations you can use portions of said material either with permission or without in a non-profit manner which is a broad description but that's how it works. b)The moment the copyright holder objects to your usage and requests you either remove the materials from your project or take it down entirely according to law, you are required to do so immediately.

Those talk shows you mention almost always have permission to do so. To find out more about the rules and regs regarding US copyright at copyright.gov.

My question is in regards to publishing original videos online with clips from tv shows recorded via DVR.

Is it legal to use video acquired from a DVR system in a video of your own? (like video clips from the news or a tv show)

If so, are there regulations? ( Water mark? Not full screen, or frame the original video?)

Is youtube's policy on this congruent with the actual copyright law?

Is youtube's policy on this congruent with the actual copyright law?

This is done all the time in pop culture talk shows where they review what happened the previous night on television... is this relevant?

I just posted this to another question, but you will never find it with the particular header, so I thought it would be helpful to give it a more descriptive header:

Here are some every day marketing issues we all face and how you can easily solve them:

If I don't have a web site yet, how can I include a simple, short web address on my literature so prospects can easily view sample footage?

Or maybe, all I have is a myspace web site. Can I use that as my web site?

What if I don't have any web site? Can I upload my sample footage as a YouTube video and use that as my site? But that is going to be a really long url!!!! No one is going to type all that in. Is there a way around this?

I eventually want this particular URL, but for now, I only have one of these other sites (myspace, facebook, YouTube, etc.). How do I get around having to reprint all my literature (business cards, brochures, etc.) twice? Once with my current url and later when I build my new web site?

------------------------------------------

Here was my post to Rob:

------------------------------------------

A myspace site, YouTube Video, or the like, may be better than nothing at all, but in all cases, make sure you design your site to be client centered and not "I" centered.

If you look through your bio, it has "I did this" and "I did that." I would suggest changing that to, "In 2004, so and so came to us and we developed a video for them that helped them to . . . The following year, the video we created for ____ won 3 awards that directly brought them 12 new clients . . ." Talk about the types of things your prospects can expect to receive from you once they choose to do business with you. In other words, what's in it for your potential clients. I realize that you have that in a round about way on your site, but it can be more direct. Instead of, "Look at what we have achieved," say, "Here's what we will do for you."

You also may want to consider replacing the photo of your editing desk with a professional photo of yourself. People like to see and feel like they know those they are doing business with. Remember, they will assume many things based upon your photo so make it professional and sharp. You could also take a photo of you in action, but look sharp and have your subject look like they are having fun. Every one is smiling and laughing.

A Marketing Tip! consider placing your video on a Video Business Card or Electronic Business Card and handing that out instead of your regular business card and include this little trick! First, decide on a domain name and come to us ( Web Design at Text-to-Art) or any web hosting company, purchase the domain name and set up an account. You don't have to create a web page at this point, just the account, BUT WHAT YOU DO IS create a redirect from your domain name to your myspace page.

Here's how this helps you. When they view your CD and click on the link to your web site, instead of ending up on a regular web site, they will be redirected to your myspace site. Then, in the future, when you have time to develop your web site, you just remove the redirect and any time they type in your url, they come to your new site instead of your myspace site.

Once you purchase your domain name and set up your redirect, you can print your web address on all your literature (brochures, business cards, etc.) and not have to worry about reprinting your marketing literature later when you get your new site.

Whatever you do, you have to remember that prospects are trying to decide who to do business with and they base their decision on what they see.

Of course, they base their decision on your video samples, but also on how you present yourself and your company. If they view you as some guy who does some good work, they still aren't sure if you are going to show up on time and do an equally good job for them. You have to present yourself as one of the top professionals in your community. Unfortunately, people often assume professional companies have such things as, a professional web site.

So, yes, a myspace site 'MAY' be better than nothing at all, but you may still loose business because of it. Prospects see your myspace site and then your competitors professionally designed site. If you are pretty close in pricing, who do you think they will choose?

Here's how I tell clients to think about it, Text-to-Art can design a professional web site for far less than what it is going to cost you in lost sales. In other words, companies pay for a web site one way or another. The only difference is some companies pay once and end up with a web site that generates new business. Other businesses opt to not have a web site, but they pay for it anyway over and over and over again in lost business.

It's something to consider.

Some time ago there was a list of video hosting sites like youtube published in Video maker. I need to find a site that my company can use to publish weekly project updates that will be secured from the general public but still accesible by our management form just about any internet connection. Anybody have a suggestion?

If your camera is Sony Brand, try using Sony Vegas. It is designed to work with its DVD Camcorders.

Who knows? Maybe it will work with other brands? =)

Birdcat,

At our current max upload bandwidth, your 10 min clip will use at most about 33 MB. This is the maximum value, assuming that you have got available the upload 450 Kbits and assuming that the clip content requires it.

We do not keep no user content in our servers. This is one of our advantages compared to other content sharing services - you do not store your private stuff on somebody else's server. We might add it as a 'on request' feature in the future. Therefore you you'll have stream it again.

But keep in mind that when you show a video to your buddy, it is not necessarily that you see it from the beginning to the end - you might skip to somewhere in the middle, watch couple of minutes and go to another video, or any other use-case flow that you can imagine. On SeeToo session all participants can control the playback.

You do not have to convert anything. If your content is one of the formats that we support (we support most of the video/audio formats), then we'll do it automatically. No effort is required from your side.

Try us. The service is free of charge.

Alex -

Are you saying that if I share a video (say a ten minute clip on my hard drive with size of 500MB) then I won't have to upload 500MB?

Also, if I do this next month, are you keeping what I sent in cache somewhere or will I have to stream that 500MB over again?

Since you limit your upload bitrate, do I have to convert everything I want to share first to a lower quality?

 Hi Cris and Birdcat

Thanks for your responses.

Considering time learning - well it is very match straightforward. Very short setup process, than select a file to play and select a buddy to invite. It is very intuitive. Try it and you'll see how easy it is.

Bandwidth: it is not quite so. First of all the our transcoding is quite efficient, it can be factor 10/20 or more, depends on the available upload bw. Currently we limit our upload stream to up to ~450Kbits/sec. It is configurable. Second - the use-case we provide is of more casual and instant kind. It is much like IM session versus an email. You have got your buddy online and you want to share with him/her something funny/exiting/personal right now, without any delay, as if you were sitting in the same room. Without waiting ,30min-couple of hours, for the file to upload. This is the use-case we have in mind.

Thanks again,

   AlexÂ

Also remember that this will count against any bandwidth constraints you may have (like Comcasts 250GB/month) as instead of uploading and taking a hit once, you'll be sending those gigabytes over and over...

Hello

I am involved in a very exiting  innovating service. It is http://www.seetoo.com.Â

We make our users share their media contents with their friends instantly, skipping the lengthy file upload phase. We provide synchronized watching experience for the Initiator (broadcaster) and the Viewers (friends). Â And furthermore - Â the file size is unlimited, you can run any size you like!Â

The Initiator have to go through short setup, while the Viewer just should have a Flash player in his browser (same for the Initiator). We support almost every known media formats.Â

The trick is online media transcoding and streaming from the desktop to SeeToo servers. The synchronization is achieved by constantly monitoring and feedback of all participants and adjusting both the up-going and the down-going streams to the feedback parameters.

We are in operational beta state. All core functionalities are on and working. We are currently working on further enriching the functionality scope.

I would appreciate any your remarks, comments or hints.

Thanks,

   Alex

I'd just recommend that you convert to h.264 movie - 640x480 - High Quality.

I use AVSMEDIA.com - Converter

Send that to YouTube and then add &fmt=18 at the end of the URL to see a higher quality video on YouTube.
