Thank you for the caution.

Her mother will be with her to supervise, and they are both devout believers. I am sure they will be very careful with the equipment.

She has expressed a big interest in photography, and she wants to get a DSLR for her graduation.

Placing an ad on eBay isn't too bad.

I certainly wouldn't be giving a 13 year old $1,000 equipment to play with. They'll just drop it...poof. You won't get anything you can use anyway. I used students almost twice that age and they returned zilch. One never removed the lenscap...

I should probably say this: the reason I want HD is that I am in a different situation than most.

I am trying to make educational/training videos that will go out mainly on the web, but also on DVD and eventually Blu-Ray. Whether Blu-Ray ever takes off, or something else replaces it I don't know. I just think it would be worth my while to get HD footage at the start, so I do not have to re-do everything later.

To me it seems like this is one of those times where a little bit more up front will pay off later, in terms of not having to re-do things. That is the only reason I am even considering it.

Thank you for your help and advice.

Thank you all for your advice.

Really what will probably happen is that my housemate's daughter (who is an aware thirteen) will probably take it all over hither and yon this summer, filming. I will give specific assignments, and then she will 'practice' by trying to retrieve the footage I need for my documentaries. This should be fun for her, and then I do not have to go film.

But I really want all of the footage in HD. I checkedon EBay, and they have a GL2 with bids at $910.00. I have a few more accessories than he did, so if I could get $1,000.00 out of it, I would probably be pretty happy.

I have never placed an ad on EBay. Is it difficult?

Thank you,

Omtech, keep in mind it's probably a NTSC cam whereas you're probably in PAL country. I'd keep it as a backup.

If you are selling a Cannon GL2 camera - Like New, you'd get a lot from it. Like Earl said, you will not be able to match the price of the camcorder alone for its original sticker price. A shotgun microphone included will definitely add value. It won't be too risky to give it a shot with eBay, a place that is full of new and used consumer camcorders. And anyway, we're talking about a Cannon GL2, so you will probably get a good deal out of it.

Sad to say, the true value of your GL2 (I have one and know how GREAT a camera it is), what you originally paid for it, and what you will get from a company that purchases used equipment, or what you will be offered by folks who frequent ebay or Craigs List will prove miles apart. I came to that realization recently when attempting to get enough out of my two XL1 and one GL2 to purchase (I'd hoped) at least one Panasonic 150, maybe even a bit toward a second one. Nada.

I will wait until I can pay cash for the new HD production cameras and have decided to keep my Canons because they are worth MORE to me than they are to virtually anyone "out there" especially considering market value when compared to current technology.

So, mine will become backups, live feed tools, second gig cameras, perhaps even rentals or loaners to others who work for me from time-to-time. Pretty much ANY gig they will be used for will be as much, if not more, than I could get anyone to pay for them.

You will NOT get what that camera is really worth, trust me.

Hi, Norman..

Â

Besides Robert's Craigslist suggestion or eBay, you might try any one of the several companies that specialize in buying used equipment focused on video production. In Videomaker, we have a company listed, KP Pro Video, that buys and sells used gear. http://www.kpprovideo.com. We also have an ad for a company called In-Sync, http://www.insyncpubs.com, but I don't know if they buy as well as sell used gear. Check these two companies out.

I think B&H also buys used gear, if it's very very slightly used as you mention.

Â

Hello.

It is a long story, but I bought a Canon GL2 a few years ago, and used it for about twenty hours. It was a great camera, but then I was hit by a series of moves. Now that I am finally getting set up, I think I need to shoot everything in HD.

Does anyone know how I would market or sell a Canon GL2 in almost new condition (with shotgun microphone, XLR adapter, big battery and hard case)? I think I maybe even still have a year left on one of those aftermarket warranties.

Thank you,

Norman
