I have both PC and Mac.

At PC, I use SONY Vegas to capture via firewire. I use a raidstream twin a my scratch disk then use a external lacie dvd burner to burn the final product. Most of my jobs on PC are for wedding videos.Â

http://www.timelinedigitalinc.com/product_info.php?products_id=546

At Mac, I use final cut pro and a AJA ioHD with my JVC GY HD camera.

The storage solution I use a raidstream quad, 4 bay sata raid 5 solution.

http://www.amazon.com/RAIDstream-portmultipiler-Photoshop-controller-Compatible/dp/B001E6JCKS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232399894&sr=8-3

Bought hard drives from newegg.

As far as making DVDs for clients, I choose 5 target DVD duplicator for $369

http://www.timelinedigitalinc.com/clonestream-targets-duplicator-pioneer-standalone-p-49.html

Since you're using a PC laptop, one old school way to check your firewire connection is to open up Windows Movie Maker. It's the default software that when opened will give you a clear indicator that your connection is live if you see the 'controls' for playback, ff, rwd, etc. If you don't see those control buttons, you have no signal. If as you say have your recorder in 'play mode' and the computer still won't recognize your camera, try rebooting with the camera connected and on. If that doesn't work, try attaching a firewire drive to make sure the connection works. If you still get no signal, it's probably the cable. If the computer does recognize the harddrive, it's most likely the camera. On the odd chance none of the above works, it could either be the firewire input on your laptop (worse case) or you may need to update windows (better case.) Premiere will recognize your camera at minimum as 'generic' long as your laptop will recognize your camera through the firewire connection.

Im not familiar with Premiere since I use Final Cut, but in Final Cut you also have to make sure the software is set to capture video with Firewire. I would assume, if this were also the case in Premiere, that you would find this in a capture settings menu or something similar to that.  If that doesn't work, you may want to take a look at the manual. Â

OK, thanks a lot for your immediate reply. :)

Are you connecting the camcorder to the laptop and switching it onto "playback mode" (or VCR mode, whatever it's called) BEFORE you launch Premiere?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did. It was in the VCR mode, and also played the video, but the laptop still cannot detect the camcorder.  Is there any specific setting? or there is something wrong in my camcorder, laptop or FireWire cable? Please help me figure it out. Thank you.

My camcorder is DCR-TRV11E PAL which is quite old. My laptop is Lenovo ThinkPad T400. I bought a Belkin IEEE 1394 FireWire Cable (4-pin/4-pin) 1.8m. Why it doesn't work when I connect my camcorder to laptop use the 1394 FireWire Cable? I use Premiere to capture the movie. It displays that camera offline. Actually, my laptop didn't have any reflection when it connected to the camcorder. What's going on? Is there anyone can give me any suggestion? Thank you very much.
