I'm looking to purchase the Zoom Digital Audio recorder. I heard they do wonders. Does anybody have any advice they could share with me on which one I should buy? I found the H2 for $179.95 and the H4 for $229.95. I'm doing a seminar in early October and would appreciate any feedback on which one to buy. Thanks everyone.

I am looking for a tripod suggestion for my DCR VX2000 Sony. I need something smooth for pan and tilt shots. As well as lightweight..I am only 5'2 and not very strong :)

Is there a decent tripod out there for around $250???

I mostly need it for weddings. I move around a lot when I am shooting so it has to be easily portable.

Thanks in advance.

SargeHero on "A difficult decision...which NLE"

Hello people of Videomaker

I have this terrible confusion to which NLE should I used for my future projects. At this moment I use Sony Vegas Pro 8, I know it from top to bottom and I really like it a lot. But as good as Vegas is I feel that I need to move on to another NLE...but which one? From the most popular NLE that I have read or heard: There is Vegas Pro, Premiere, Final Cut and Avid. As a Vegas user I wonder, what difference does the other NLE have that I cannot do in Vegas? Of course Avid is the beast of editors but what difference would it make if I have knowledge using Premiere, Vegas and Final Cut? I consider this; I will be editing video with many people and not everyone will have Avid (or a Computer powerful enough to handle it) but there is a possibility that they will have one of the other NLE and if I know how to use them all I will have advantage. (Of course I will have a preferred NLE) Another thing that make me write this topic is regarding to Avid. I was looking over it and is really awesome, powerful and all, but when I get to look at the price I almost die ($2495.00 is a lot of money) I keep searching and I found out about the academic price $295.00 and since I'm a student, I apply and now I'm awfully confuse, what should I do? On the other hand I will also buy the Adobe Master Collection and a Apple MacPro. Its a lot of stuff I know. Its because I'm starting a business about video and graphics designs and I'm looking for the best things. At this moment I'm looking for information, learning at much as I can on how to use camcorders, improving my editing skills and learning how to use other programs. Since in video you need high reputation I consider that my clients will judge me by the NLE I used, the camcorder and of course the quality of my project (which will be near perfection) This is all in the long run and we are preparing a plan of action (where and how to invest, etc) So, back to the original question, which NLE should I use?

Nowdays, more and more people use camcorder to record something happy, such as birthday party, wedding, graduation etc. While, maybe lots of you aren’t familiar with these tools, feeling frustrated about how to convert and import properly those .MOD video files. Now here, I give some little tips and hope it useful to all of you.

First, what’s Mod?

.Mod files are actually MPEG-2 files with AC3 audio, similar to a VOB file on a DVD or the M2T files used on Sony hard drive camcorders, this video file format is used on many digital camcorders, such as the JVC Everio, the Canon FS100 and the Panasonic D-Snap SD-card camcorders.

Second, why and how we convert them to what we wanted video formats?

Because .Mod file is not supported by iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPod Classic, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP, Zune, Creative Zen etc, so if you want to import MOD files from your camcorders to play on iPod, even burn to DVD to keep them, you have to convert them.
Here, I’ll share you with a useful tool to solve this problem.
Part one: For Mac users:

Aiseesoft http://www.aiseesoft.com/mod-converter-for-mac.html Mod Converter for Mac can help you convert Panasonic/JVC/Cannon etc. Mod file to AVI, convert Mod to FLV, MPG, MP4, MOV, FLV, 3GP, etc., then you can enjoy edit them, enjoy them on your portable devices.

Now, follow the step-by-step guide and start the conversion.

Step 0: Download, install and run Aiseesoft Mod Converter for Mac
And after a while, you can see the following inferface:

The MOD files that the JVC camera produces are really just MPEG-2 files. You can make a batch file to do a mass convert of MOD files to what they really are, MPG files, by just renaming the extension.

Hello, I want to buy a camcorder to make student films and short home made films. I'm thinking of buying the Sony XR500V (Hard drive + memory disc optional) and the Panasonic TM300 (memory stick).

I know each camera has its adventages and flaws;
The Panasonic has 24p mode, manual Iris which the sony DOES NOT.
But on the other hand some say that the sony beats the Panaonic in quality, friendly to use etc. And also that the Panasonic doesn't work well throughout time (is this true?)

I know that the Sony Vegas tries to create 24p mode and I've seen on some youtube clips that the exposure keeps changing when they did this mode - at least I hope that it's because of that mode.
Is the 24p mode so important that it'd be a deciding factor?

In your expirience which is better, more friendly to use, better quality, sharpness, better in low light.
In other words, if you were in my shoes which one would you get?

PLEASE HELP ME ASAP - I don't have much time since my sister is in New York this week (where it's much cheaper).

I was drawn to the 150 because the price is very reasonable and is there a big difference in image quality between the two ACVHD or DVCPRO HD, student - focus is documentary (possible narrative on the side)

I've recently purchased the JVC GZ-MG505 camcorder a while ago and had a change to test how well it handles signals from an external microphone. It seems that they've implemented some sort of "Auto-gain" that controls the camera's sound system.

I've recently constructed my own simple "shotgun mic" (PVC pipe with wire and mic elements). It seems to record fine into my camcorder, picking up a ton of off-axis noise and sounds like its clipping the on-axis sound. I doubt it's a design problem, because the clipping picks up heavily when someone speaks at a normal tone into the front of the microphone, being approximately 2 - 3 feet away. Are there any workarounds, such as finding a good small mic attenuator. I'm not chasing after anything fancy, just need a small mic level adjuster that fits with a 1/8" miniplug (in and out).

Any advice on where to find a good, small mic attenuator that I can use to get around this issue ($1 - $10 range)? If this doesn't help, are there any other options for a better work-around?

Hello, Any Vegas expert out there that can help me out. All I want is to burn my edited (simple title, transition) AVCHD files to a regular DVD disc and keep the 1920x1080 resolution.

I've been pulling my hair tying to figure this out. DVD Architect doesn't seem to support HD resolution, as it always wants to resample my video to DVD resolution. The closest thing I came to a solution is to click "make movie" >"Burn it to a DVD, Blu-ray disc, or CD. > "Blu-ray disc". I tried both video format, and the program was able to burn without errors. While I can play the DVD on my PC (stutter and all), my PS3 doesn't seem to see it as a "movie" disc, but instead a DATA disc.

That said, it wont play the disc automatically. I can go through the folder, and into to the "Stream" folder. I can click the file there, and it will play, but that doesn't seem right. Oh, and there are only two choice for burn speed (1.0x, and 2.0x) instead of the actual 24.0x speed. Anyway, please advise. I was using pinnacle studio 12 prior to Vegas, and I believe Pinnacle can burn full HD content on a regular DVD without a problem. If only Pinnacle can handle AVCHD files without begging for mercy (even on my Quad system).

I'm really liking Vegas, and will probably switch, but I'm getting frustrated about this particular issue. I'm pretty sure there's a away (short of getting the PRO version, which I really don't need), someone just need to point me in the right direction.

Thank you in advance.

My 13yo son has been using an old version of Pinnacle Studio for a few years now and I wanted to upgrade him. I purchased Photoshop Elements 7/Premiere 7 for basic editing, but then found that he was interested in Adobe After Effects (CS4). My question is ... would he still need to use Premiere 7 (or similar) as a basic editor prior to using After Effects? Or does After Effects also provide for the basic editing. I'm confused.

Obviously SW isn't my thing, so I would appreciate the feedback.

I have a JVC GR-D770U MiniDV camcorder, and I am unable to transfer the video from my camcorder to my PC running Windows XP Pro. I have plugged in the 4-pin to 6-pin fire wire cable. I have tried to capture the video using Windows Movie Maker, and Adobe Premier Pro CS4, and they will not capture or preview the the video. With Adobe Pemier Pro an error message keeps popping up "Invalide Timecode". I know the software is communicating with the camera becuase I can rewind, play, and fast forward the tape in the camera, but I can't capture the video, or even preview it in the software. I have tried emailing JVC support, but they have failed to reply (so much for JVC). I'm at a loss as to how to overcome this obsticale, and get my video onto my hard drive. If I am unable to solve the problem with a solution I'm ready to get rid of the camera, and look for a new one. I considered a video capture card, but the camcorder is already digital, so it woiuld be redundent. I'm stumped, and frustrated, this process should not be rocket science, it shoiuld be straight forward, simple and easy to load your video onto a computer. I would appreciate any help, or suggestions you can offer.

I have a miniDV video camera made by JVC, Model GR-D770U, and followed the manual indicating hooking up a fire wire cable to transfer the video from the camera to my PC running Windows XP. So far I have been unsccessful in trying to transfer the video from the camcorder to my pc, Windows Movie Maker will not capture the video, and Adobe Premier Pro CS4 would not capture the video as well, I can manipulate the camera through the software, (rewind, play, fast forward) but thats about it. I called customer support at JVC, and they couildn't help me, and despite pointing out the fact that their manual says I can, they tell me I can't, and that I need to use a DVD recorder to transfer the video in order to get it on my computer. So now i have to use a work arouind that I'm not sure will work ? And the customers service rep begins to tell me that is why JVC are changing from tape to hard drives, and sd cards, Cmon, JVC is clueless about what they are doing in the support department. I can garuntee you I'm selling my JVC camera, and purchasing another brand that will work without all this BS work around nonsense. Now I know why people prefer other video camera brands, and Macs over PC's for video editing.

This is a video I made with some friends of mine for my birthday party. I like to make shorts, so I had everyone over for cake and videomaking. We had fun, and the final product reflects that I hope. I had to deinterlace for YouTube, but besides that, what things would you recommend changing or watching for on future shorts? Thanks!

Hey guys. So, this is my first year in high school (I am a freshman), and i am dying to go to Broadcasting class next year. But to do so, i have to create a video showing how good I am. With that in mind, i decided that i would learn everything that i could until i started the video. I started to explore with Vegas Pro 9 effects and plug-ins, and created this video. I am only editing it few hours per weekend, because i have to study from 7:30 AM to 1:30 AM (being in all Honors classes is killing me =P), so i can't get much video edited. So, this is my 1 and a half day of editing. Any critiques, suggestions and comments on the video are appreciated and welcomed! =D

Thanks Everybody!

So I am editing a home movie and I'm using full MP3 songs over the video. Strange thing, MP3s play fine but in the project the audio randomly drops to 0 at a certain point in some songs, so I have to fade the song out before it reaches that point and into another song which may or may not cut out. The Mp3s play fine.

Fading out and into another song is not a problem, but I would really like to know why this is happening if anyone knows, thanks.

After talking to some VFX people I know I decided I need to use this software.

Hello, I would like to buy myself a high definition video camera in the
near future and have been looking at a few of the cheaper (costing less
than $800) ones around the web.

The main reason I want to get myself one is to shoot wildlife videos
and of all this beautiful scenery around here along the coast of
Georgia. Most of the cameras I've been looking at have very weak
optical zooms of 10X - 12X. I certainly want/need a much bigger zoom to
be able to zoom in close to the wildlife without spooking them.

Of course, I certainly want a video camera that takes great video, but
here are my most important feature needs:

Great low-light recording

true widescreen recording ability

long optical zoom of at least 20X power (unless I can get a quality add-on lens to extend a lower optical zoom).

I'm a "BIG DUMMY" when it comes to video cameras and have a few
questions for anyone who don't mind answering them. Any help or camera
recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Remember, my budget will
be no more than $800 dollars!

Thank you very much and I really do appreciate your time.

1. First of all, which High Definition format would you recommend and why?

2. When recording in 24p or 30p is sound captured along with the video? If so, is the sound in sync with it?

3. Is the camera loud when recording in the 24p or 30p modes?

4. Can high definition video be shot on regular MiniDV tapes or must I use an HDV tape? Does it really matter?

5. How will adding a lens (wide angle or telephoto) affect recording in high definition?

6. Can I still record in widescreen mode if I use an add-on lens attached to my video camera?

7. Will 24p or 30p work at the longest telephoto end of the lens?

8. Will 24p or 30p work with a wide angle or telephoto add-on lens?

9. Will 24p or 30p work well in low-light situations?

10. Can I burn my hi-def video to regular DVD's? If so will the
video still be hi-def or will it be down converted to standard
definition?

11. Any camcorder suggestions?

Hi all, thanks for the awesome forums, alot of information here and i hope to make good use of it. I am completely new to videography ect. and will certainly appreciate and help and time you offer. I am looking to buy my first camcorder and really have no where to start.

I do a lot of driving and plan on shooting from my dash to start off with and go from there. Heres what i think i want or need.

-Great low light recording

-Durability?

-Image stabalization

-AC/DC capable(standard)

-HD?

Ok here are my questions and concerns, please keep in mind I intend for my first camcorder to cost under $1000, $800 preferably

1. Do i need to worry about durability, will one camcorder hold better than another?

2. Do i really need HD? I want high quality recordings and know HD is the way to go but dont really know what the other options are out there. Am I aiming for something that i do not need to spend the money on?

3. Assuming I do go HD I am a little confused about the recording medium. From what I see i can go for tapes, flash, hard drive, or sd cards. I have a basic understanding of how sd and hard drives work but do not understand flash or tapes. Whats going to be the most simple route here? I am looking for low maintence, safe recordings.

4. For the time being I will be using a pc for any editing, Do i need to shop for specific camcorders and software because of my pc?

5. Have i missed anything? Anyhitng I should be looking for, concerned about or should know about my first buy?

Heres what my brief research has pointed my towards

It's been an interesting three years as Videomaker's
Editor-in-Chief, but I will be moving on at the end of this month.
Looking back at my time at Videomaker I'm very proud of the work our
team put together. It's a challenging time in the print industry, and
because of the nimbleness, dedication, and expertise of our staff,
there's still a print magazine to read, and will be for the foreseeable
future. Our website continues to grow quickly, our Tips and Tricks
videos are very popular, and our forums (that have been online since
1994) have some new life breathed into them. People are still very
passionate about the process of making video, just the media in which
they learn about it, is changing.

It's actually a very exciting time to be a video producer. The
barriers to entry have never been lower. The sheer quality and choices
that videographers have in camcorders and accessories is mind boggling,
compared to when I started my career as an intern here in 1993. And the
most major change is in distribution, where anyone can upload a video
and have an audience of millions.

So it is with a great deal of pride that I etched my name on the
Videomaker mantle. It's a publication that has been going strong since
1985, I read Videomaker before I got into the business, and I'll
continue to read Videomaker after I leave. I hope you found the
articles and videos during my tenure here useful and informative, and
it's been an honor to work with a great editorial staff, and a lot of
fun creating all that content.

This does open up a pretty exciting position now at Videomaker. If
you think you have what it takes to run the editorial department,
create content for print, web, and video, and wouldn't mind living in
the lovely town of Chico, Ca. Why not drop us a resume at jobs@videomaker.com ?

the modes are hdv(1440x1080), then pf30, pf24. Which one would best suit me for the martial art stuff?? and which for regular stuff? ive been reading on all the jargon, pulldown removal shit and stuff like that. but i am a total simpleton. please help. i know 60 frames is ideal for rapid movement stuff

Hi There,

I've just purchased a Panasonic AG-DVX100B Camcorder for videotaping short films mainly to be placed on the Internet. It has 2 XLR inputs. I'm looking now into audio and lighting equipment, but I'm still a beginner, so I thought I would start small. Does anyone have recommendations for someone just starting off? Lighting kits? Audio kits?
Thanks in advance.
