I have been reading everything I can find on lighting, in order to set up a small studio for recording internet video trainings. I even bought a lighting video, and now have a good idea of the concepts, but can't seem to get these specifics figured out.

    1. Assuming I'm using 3-point lighting in a small (225 sq ft) room to do instructional video for the web, what should I shoot for in wattage? I understand the fill and background should be less than the key, but can anybody offer wattage suggestions for the 3 lights? I don't want to come up short, or end up with way too much light (and heat) in a small room.

    2. I have a tiny budget, but a step up from halogen worklights would be nice. I've checked sites like B&H, and they have cheaper lights either as a reflector, with an umbrella, or with a softbox. I want soft light, but also want to be able to use greenscreen. Umbrellas seem a lot cheaper than softboxes, but do they work the same? And which or all of the lights should be diffused?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. 1. I think 300-watt lights will work fine. I doubt you will need more than 500-watt lights. I would get two 300-watt lights and two 150-watt lights. Make sure you buy barn doors, lighting gels, diffusion, and scrims too.

    2. softboxes and umbrellas pretty much do the same thing - the spread out soft light evenly. For some people, what it comes down to is the shape of the highlight in someone's eye glasses. Umbrellas will create circular highlights in the lenses of someone's glasses where as soft boxes will create rectangular ones.

    3. which lights you add diffusion to is up to you. For interviews, I put some on the key and fill lights, but not on the rim light.
