I am starting a film production club\class in my school. The only problem is lack of funds for equipment. The only fundraising activity we can think of is a bake sale and no one is in favor of that. What should we do?!

Yard sale? Gather a bunch of stuff you don't want and sell it. Take the profits and put it into your club.

Goto a local video production studio and ask if they have any equipment they don't need and say you'll take it off their hands for free or for a small price.

What are you looking to buy for your club?

Kingkool asked the right question - what is it that you need? (Other than a full-blown production studio.) What do you have already, including personal property?

My first suggestion is that instead of trying to raise money (and a bake sale isn't going to hack it) is that you see what is available at the community level. When cable tv came courting to towns/villages/cities, most everyone got them to provide not just community-access channels, but also the equipment to produce local programming. This equipment, in most cases, has gone almost unused and certainly not to it's maximum usage. You might just have a great resource available to you now for free.

Hey Brett, here's another idea: Find someone who is familiar with Ebay--someone who has had experience with both buying and selling stuff there. I have been ablet to buy used equipment at ebay, use it for a few months and then resell it with very little loss (and sometimes I have even made gain!). It is a little daring, but with some careful thought and investigation (the web is a wonderful thing), you can get a lot done and get almost all your cash back! Consider it.

Sorry Jim, but I think your idea is really stupid; it could backfire. Might as well rent equipment because you will know upfront what it will cost. Obviously you have the time to spend on buying and selling equipment, more power to you, but most people should spend their time a bit more productively - namely by concentrating on doing video rather than how to scam equipment. Your post is actually a good reason NOT to buy on ebay!

And what exactly is wrong with Jim's method?
No one is being "scammed", he wins an auction, uses the equipment, then sells it.

    Big whoop Phil!

Phil! Relax! We're trying to help this guy do school video on a tight budget. I've been there (we probably all have). No one is trying scam anyone here! I'm not an Ebay promoter and I have nothing currently for sale on Ebay or any other auction site. But I have successfully done what I have said I have done. I get the impression that you have not. Don't knock it 'till you've tried it. Renting IS another option. No argument. However, you will use equipment that has been used by dozens of people and you will pay a middle man. That's fine. Let's help this guy with a variety of ideas and let him decide! This isn't a competition--do what works for you. No skin off my nose! (Thanks Jenny)

So far, we have a computer with adobe premiere and vegas 4.0 trial\demo versions. We have a dcr-trv240 camcorder, firewire and access to a cable modem. However this is all peer owned equipment. We want to raise funds for anything that will help us in the production of our movies. ie better picture and sound quality. Mic's, lights.. we have no clue what we would do with the money. But we have a long term goal of getting a minidv camcorder... maybe a trip to a film festival. What are the essentials our film club should have to look like a pro's studio?

Thanks to everyone for there helpful posts and to Phill for suggesting the ebay scam.
