Behind the scenes, we've been taking a hard look at our forums and have come to the conclusion that we could do better. Better communication, better organization, and better responses from the editorial staff.

We're in the process of designing a new Videomaker forum, and wanted to solicit ideas from our users about what works and what doesn't and incorporate any suggestions you may have about how to make the next generation of Videomaker's forums better.

So please feel free to comment on things like:

Forum Organization: Should the forums be more specifically product based, or more general? What categories do you think should go, and what are essential? Any suggestions for new categories?

Forum Software: What don't you like about our current forum software? What forum features would you suggest to improve the usefullness of this site?

Forum Design: Like the red? Hate it? Layout OK? please tell us a little about aesthetics of the forum.

Any and all comments on the state of Videomaker's forum are welcome. Feel fee to include links to other forums to illustrate your points.

Let's take this opportunity to design the next version of Videomaker's forums together...

      Thanks,

      John

It would be nice to be emailed when a topic I've posted on receives a response as a heads-up.  Same goes for the PM system.

      Thanks Ryan,

You'll be happy to know, the email notification for the Forum and PM system is definitely going to be in the new forum.

There should be an obviously link at the top that reads, "Forum Etiquette." New users should be forced to read the content at this link. Upon their registration, they should be lead to a fake web page that says, "Your registration is being processed. As you patiently wait, feel free to read our forum etiquette." Of course, there is probably no real processing, and you can't physically make the newcomer read the etiquette, but maybe a few will fall for the trick.

This link should take the web surfer to "rules" or suggests about how to use the forum. For example, users should first search the forum to see if their question has already been a topic. I don't know about you, but I am tired of the same old "What camcorder should I get?" question. It's been answered numerous times here. Also, occasionally you run into rude users. Not cool. Unfortunately, some people need to be told not to be rude. So, things like that could be addressed.

They lay out is kinda boring, but then again, it's a forum. I dunno what you could do to spice it up. It is what it is. I really like how they do it at http://www.creativecow.net. Copy off them.

A chat room would be cool too.

I think it would be nice to be able to embedd video or audio into a post so you can show what you are talking about. Plus a chat room with voice chat so users can talk to each other too. Maybe even a whiteboard to draw on.

Also each member has their own blog and maybe a gig to upload videos and photos. Better spam control and a whos online that shows their picture. Email with attachments too.

Also organize the forum better, this version isn't working well.  A latest Activity button so you can see the posts since your last visit. Take a look at NING.com they have a good system. :-)

I think I remember Aspyrider wanted "Magix Movie Edit Pro" added to the list of software forums. He didn't mention it above, but the last time I saw the post for adding Magix, it had a ton of responses.

I think the layout is just fine. Red is cool, it's my favorite color.

Like Robgrauert, I'm sick and tired of the "What kind of camera/software/mic setup/computer should I get?" question. Some of them are specific, but there are many that are way too generic. Is there a way we could filter these generic ones out? I'll think of something to suggest on that... Maybe a specific forum for these questions, and each post must pass the "Videomaker Forum Master's" inspection. Or an automatically generated email if you post something that includes 4 or more of the following words: new/newbie/noob, help, which, kind/sort, setup, etc.

This is actually the best forum I'm a member of, far and away. I'm on a whole bunch of others, but they are all rather pathetic most of the time. Keep up the good work. The fact that you realize this forum could be improved shows how much better this forum really is.

It would be cool for users to have more accesible mark up code options.

Also, can we get rid of these " ÂÂ" every time we make an edit?

      Best Regards,

Oh, btw...what are the best DVD transcode settings? Is Final Cut better than Premiere? <wink>

    9. How about a collective project where everyone who signs up contributes a couple of lines to a movie and then each participant gets to shoot a 60 sec. (or so) clip of one of the segments of the movie.  I know it sounds like a drunken party game at Sundance, but could turn out to be something pretty cool.

One thing to consider is that this is a video site so i think video should be a big part of it. There should be a way to upload video and integrate it into the forum. Perhaps even web cam replies.

As far as the forum in text it should conform to the basic rules of most forums so new users don't have to try to figure it out.

      Just some more ideas...

Which ones do you feel could go, are there any we should add?

I think every NLE should have its own forum, also perhaps a classified ads section so maybe the spam will go there. . Add a marketing forum for ideas. Perhaps a tutorial section for how-tos not only for NLE tricks but how to build a ___ type stuff. Or maybe a Tutorial & DIY section?

If you see someone online perhaps you could IM them and then go into a chat room to talk and video conference.

Plus maybe add a showcase so users can feature their work.

      Other ideas:

      • A photo upload section so members can upload images like DVD menu templates, graphics, mattes, etc.

      • A file transfer system so members can share a file, even huge files with each other. The system would hold it for a few days then delete it so the system doesn't get filled up.

      • A resources section with links to converters, graphics, sfx, freebies, etc.

      Other ideas:

      • Perhaps a weekly tele conference or chat show with the staff for questions

      • A larger social area, sometimes video people just want to hang out and talk or share.

      • A legal forum with an actual lawyer administrator

      • There are far too many cameras for a individual forum so maybe a brand section. Its here now but perhaps needs to be under a better camera section.

Some of the aforementioned items are already here but not organized or easy to find. Or are simply not used, classifieds may end up in marketing or the lounge, camera posts get posted in a NLE section.

I rarely actually go into a forum section but rather look at the latest activity for recent posts. But then again I'm here daily.  And because I come to the forum and only look at the activity, I do not see the rest of the site. Perhaps the forum should be integrated into the main site?

Also if someone leaves me a message It isn't prominent so I may miss it for days.  A more visual message and email area is needed.

as I think of more I'll add it here...

I thought of a way to clean through the new posters who need help. I think there should be a specific forum for brand new posters called Newbies Who Need Help. Then that's the only forum they can post on at first. The rest of us could have the option to allow those posts to show up for us to see or not, so we could focus more on more advanced videomakers if we chose to. Or you could click a button that also showed the posts by brand new guys if you wanted to.

Also I really like the Instant Messaging idea, so that if someone is logged on, you could IM them to tell them you're answering their question, so they don't have to wait around to see if anyone answers.

I like that idea, but would people answer their questions or just ignore them? But this did give me an idea, when you first join maybe you can only post in the spam or newbie area, after 24 hours or so you have access to the full forum. This way folks that spam can only post in the spam area. Most spammers wont come back 24 hours later, but serious videomakers will.

So when you join you get access to the newbie section and only the classifieds.  After 24 hours a bot opens up your accoun to to full access. Membership has its privileges?

Also perhaps if you join and become a "member" you get a link to some cool free downloads, that way it kinda makes it special to be here? :-)

Interesting Ideas. I think the newbie forum is a good idea, where we can separate discussions about products from topics like this product won't work for me, here's my setup etc.

You may notice one or two spam posts a day right now, we ask you not to reply to them, we'll be by shortly to clean up the mess. We decided to turn off our spam filter as it seemed to catch about 40% legitimate posts (including my own!), especially those with external links. We thought the lesser of two evils was to go through and manually mop up the spam every day, than risk a legitimate post getting caught in the filter.

      Great suggestions so far...

       ...and another thing.. LOL

Many people come on here and say, "How do I make this work" leaving very few details to go on. Perhaps in order to post they must answer some simple questions like, What kind of computer, how much ram, HD space, software version and video file type?

Then give a very detailed remark about what is going on and the problem or error they are encountering.

If folks had this information up front we can help newbies out much better.

Most members will ignore a question simply because the end user didn't supply enough information to diagnose the problem. It could be anything. Those that do respond usually ask the above questions and maybe the poster comes back and then supplies the proper information so we can help them.

So i suggest the newbie or help sections come with a questionnaire,  something they have to fill out to post. That way we can help them.

      I would like:

1-The ability to Subscribe to posts (with email notification) that I find interesting. The rss feed for posts seems cool but not the convenient since I will later have to manually clear the feeds from my aggregater.

2-Stickies at teh top of each form tht outline forum rules, ettiquite and FAQs so that we don't have to go over the same things over and over again. Members should be able to make suggestions for additions to the stickies so that we can keep them fresh and up to date.

3-While I would suggest against every different bit of editing, effects, graphics software having it's own forum I would suggest that certain  forums be added, specifically I would suggest a forum for graphics and effects both physical and digital. For example I don't think we have a forum dedicated to After Effects even though it is a pretty serious bit of software. Also a forum dealing with image editing software (photoshop, illustrator, paint shop pro) might be helpful to some as well.

Something I would suggest against is the creation of a noob forum. I think that it might create a kind of barrier between new user of the site and those who have been here for a while. It's a bit elitest, and may definitely create a sense of frustration to those who are trying to seek advice since other users may simply choose to avoid even viewing that forum.

I like the idea of the chat and the email notification. I will like to have a section of the forum that we could be able to discuss the articles that Videomaker.com have. There are a lot of articles and usually before I post in the forum I search for an article that could answer my question. Some articles are great and I will like to discuss this articles with the Videomaker community, asking them something like; Does the techniques of this articles help you?, Do you have a better way of doing it?, Do you recommend another software/hardware, etc.

Another thing is that when someone post they choose topics titles like; "Im new", "Help me", "What should I do", etc, and it should be more specific. Like many people here, I don't like this at all because it does not attract me to read it. Some topics titles I see are way good and I definitely read them, but I ignore those lame topic titles.

I visit Videomaker.com almost daily and, like Aspyrider said, the first thing I look for is the recent forum activity. I completely ignore everything else from the page. The recent forum activity should be the first thing to see when opening Videomaker.com

There is a fine line between overcontrol and heavy-handed administration/moderation, censorship, and allowing the free flow of thoughts, ideas, opinions, information and debate. Videomaker is among a very few forum sponsors that has successfully walked that line.

I would hesitate to suggest restrictive measures limiting access to newbies/noobs when the very foundation of Videomaker is based on instruction, information and helpful content important to those just enterting the fold.

I also would hesitate to implement so many subject/topic categories that are so specific as to prevent at least the perusal of more general topics. It is not likely that so-called experts or long-time video people will pop in on a newbie forum. Occasionally, sure, but for the most part if too many specific forum topics thin the focus, really important topics might die of inactivity.

Personally, a more general approach, though it often results in OT posts/responses, even those hated spam marketers, is to be preferred IMHO.

How a site looks, colors/graphics used, isn't as important to me personally, as is the ease of navigation and content. While the addition of clips, images, etc. etc. might, to a degree, make some aspects of this forum more interesting to a few activists, it will likely end up cluttering the forum so much that ease of navigation and accessibilty to specific topics will take a hit. Plus I am not sure if even Videomaker has the resources to maintain/sustain both a broad, and specific, forum that could lead to participant anarchy.

I like the idea of chat. I like the idea of notification when something new has been posted to a topic or post I am following, or have responded to. I like the idea of a newbie category, but not the limiting of newbies to ONLY that for ANY period of time. I like open access, freedom of expression, and moderation only to the extent that those unable to control their attitudes, anger and abusive language are monitored and admonished.

Perhaps a healthy debate section would be in order, along the lines of a WWW cagefight approach, but the rest of the boards are doing a good job as they are. Simplification of access should be top priority. Overloading Videomaker Forums with a boatload of special stuff, that often is available or can be found elsewhere on a specific site would be redundant IMHO.

We all like to upgrade/update our looks, content, etc. on web sites, but sometimes change simply for the sake of it results in a law of diminishing returns. I might sound adverse to change, but actually I am not. I only wish that changes made were more constructive and purpose focused than they often are.

People get tired of what THEY perceive as the same old, The Chicken Dance at weddings for example, but for the people who enjoy getting out there and flapping their arms it's still fun. No forum, in my experience, regardless of the ease with which it offers archival search, can successfully eliminate the redundancy of questions, comments or posts. Often there are sufficient changes in the industry to warrant a renewal of certain questions like, what brand/model of camera should I purchase.

Like most anything available to us here, or elsewhere, we all have the option to NOT read it, post to it, or bother following.

Just wanted to add that I to just normally check the "recent forums posts" section and wanted to suggest that perhaps we could make that list longer, like maybe 2 pages long and also list the section where it can be found.

      Example:

2-17-09  LCD TV v.s Computer Monitor - General Questions - "created by" - "last poster" - 620 views - 20 responses - Mark as favorite

This would help keep track of the posts that we're interested and save time.  Sometimes I loose track of a threads and miss replies or questions.  I think having a longer recent post section will keep topics more visible allowing for more action, especially when traffic starts flowing.

I've been seeing more spam and sometimes it crowds out the recent posts....I think that sux.

As far as restrictive measures....I agree with Big Earl.  This site should be as newbie friendly as possible.  I think it would help a great deal to have a sticky stating to list as much information as possible so people can accurately address the problem.  There is just so much information especially during this digital/HD crossover and it's just hard to help when you're constantly guessing what the problem is because it could be a million different things depending on their equipment and certain symptoms.

The biggest problem with that is the newbie never gets an answer and than thinks we're all a bunch of dicks and never comes back... : (

btw....I try to only argue with the videomaker veterans, so I'm not that much of a dick. ; )

I think Rob hates me...but he's right, XD kicks HDV's ass....I can respect that.

well a data base of FAQ's would be nice so that we don't get tons of questions on the same topic.  there seems to be a few questions that every noobs ask and top of the list has to be what rig do I buy to start out with.  then they follow up with lights mics software exc.  Follow this FAQ page with a ask a question page with a form that requires them to fill in the basic information we need to answer thier question.  As far as noobs being restricted, not a good idea, I was once a noob, so were you.  Also they won't be ignored because of the latest post menu you have at the bottom of the fourms, please leave that in.

and Rob as always had a great idea, a Forum Etiquette page for new users, and why not make it a video clip, Videomaker has that ability and most people will watch it.

I would like to see a equipment review fourm, some one buys a new piece of equipment give them a place to post a short 2 min video about what they think about the product.  I agree with the others, Video should be a key point in the fourms.

Chat room, great idea why not make it a video chat room.

and don't forget the buffet bar :0

Yeah...that's what I'm talking about. I always make errors typing the first pass.  I usually have to go back, but it's just a pain to re-read it in the text box instead of a preview window....and it's even more of pain to go back and delete all those  characters, especially in long posts...

We've been looking into new spam filters. The one we're currently using was flagging to many legitimate posts, in the mean time we're de-spamming manually. Believe me we're looking hard at spam filters (I hate cleaning 'em up).

The weird characters issue is a hassle, thanks for bringing this all to our attention.

"I would like to see a equipment review fourm, some one buys a new piece of equipment give them a place to post a short 2 min video about what they think about the product.  I agree with the others, Video should be a key point in the fourms."

This is something we've been strongly in favor of, and we're going through different software solutions, either using embed codes from video sharing sites like youtube, or hosting the video on our own servers.

I think Coreece hit the nail on the head about it being very easy to loose track of specific threads. I find myself relying far too much on the "recent threads" page, and would like it to be more intuitive navigation wise.

Thanks for all of these responses, we are looking at them each week in our forum committee so keep 'em coming.

Regarding those frustrating symbols that show up (primarily paragraph breaks) in edited posts.

I have eliminated them by eliminating the first paragraph space indentation. For example, I will go out now, then come back in and repeat this without the spaces before "Regarding."

A resource thread with locked topics "other words the lock subject threads would always be on top" ancored topics like roytaly free audio clips; RF video clips; RF graptic arts, just a few ideas.

And a job board, for instance I conciter myself to be a master at audio editing after doing it for 25 years, however I totaly lack that creative ability to take a bunch of video clips and align it in a story.  A job board that would allow me to post my resume and abilities and the services i am willing to hire out, and allow me to view everyone elses resume and services so that I may sub out the work that I am only ok at.

What do yall think about this idea?
